    Saw him last night in the Blue Mountains. What a treat! Have been a huge fan from the outset. When he played at Sydney Uni I knew he was coming out for signings and meet and greet but had to rush off to catch the last train home.
    This time, being local, I got an album signed and a quick chat. Rapt.

      How was the Blue Mountain gig? I'm glad you enjoyed it. Were there many people there? I like it how he's play a few 'out of the way' places, like the early punk bands did when they visited Australia in the late70s/early 80s. Glad you got your autograph and chat. I got mine last time at the Syd Uni show. This time I hurried off for my train home. Thanks for commenting.

      @@Peter_LiveMusic yes, it was great. A good-sized crowd but, because of the venue, most of us were seated for the entirety. I like the way he telegraphed it by saying he was going to play three solo songs then a Stranglers nugget, minimising any disquiet (having already played Rattus in its entirety at the Sydney uni gig). A good mix of the well known and less so - including a track off Nosferatu! My partner recognised Strange Little Girl and Always The Sun but wondered why no Golden Brown. Perhaps not for a three-piece or needs keyboard?
      He shushed someone calling out for (oddly, given it's a long album track) Toiler On The Sea
      Yes, loved the fact he played at the Hub. Couldn't have foreseen that.

    Hugh was the soul of The Stranglers.
    Seen them with him (No More Heroes onwards until he left) and without, they weren't the same. Walked out half way through when I saw them without.
    To me there is more honesty in the music when he plays. Even when he plays Stranglers tracks. He plays his interpretation and doesn't try to recreate
    something that doesn't exist anymore.

    I'm shouted at by Stranglers fans but I've always enjoyed JJ' s post Hugh Stranglers far less than Hugh's solo output. So underrated. Guess the Tribute fans who seem to be in denial will enjoy sets made up of mostly HC songs. Monster is my fave HC LP . Norfolk coast is quite good as was DM but I far prefer Hughs records. Stranglers were never the same without him to me .

    • @Peter_LiveMusic

      I enjoy it all - early Stranglers, The Stranglers post Hugh and Hugh's solo work. It's all music and I've no idea why people have to be so divided about it. I think it's great that both Hugh and The Stranglers are still recording new songs (unlike many bands from that period who are just living off their past hits).

      @@pozsonyiadam6512 the Men in Black Burnel band 😂. Honestly via Jonny Sox in the history of music I can barely believe a protagonist in a band had been so vilified for only doing what Bowie Weller doing did in leaving or disbanding a band ..as for this tour with the main chief songwriter absent and fans who deny his creativity of those songs such as skin deep which the band used to gag was a solo Hugh song..how disrespectful can you get . I went to the Marrickville gig and would have also gone to the Blue Mountains one but had something else on.
    There were a couple of drunk boomers at Marrickville calling out for old Stranglers stuff. Seriously, it's what over 25 years on since he left? They were on the verge of being kicked out I reckon. I was about to tell them to shut their pie holes myself.
    Looks like he didn't do Big Bug at Mary's Underground, which he did at Marrickville. That was my absolute highlight, WOW! It's quite different from the Nosferatu version, just so good would like to see it re-recorded.
    Also got a signed album, chat and photo, super nice guy. We are so lucky to have him still coming out here.

    • @Peter_LiveMusic
      @Peter_LiveMusic  13 днів тому

      Yeah, a couple of abusive drunks at this gig too, demanding Stranglers' songs. You can hear one jerk making his displeasure known by whistling throughout "When I Was a Young Man".
      Yes, he did play "Big Bug". Sorry I didn't record it. The full setlist is here:
      www.setlist.fm/setlist/hugh-cornwell/2024/marys-underground-sydney-australia-53576fa1.html
      He is a nice guy. I had a chat with him during his previous tour. I didn't bother lining up this time. Had a train to catch.
      So now it's The Stranglers turn to tour again next year. Ironically, they cop just as much abuse from so-called fans, accusing them of being a cover band. Impossible to please some people. I'm happy just to listen to the music. Thanks for commenting.

    Nice one Peter, when I went to see The Stranglers in 1977 in Carlisle at the Market Hall, October, they played 2 songs then had a fight on stage and all walked off.... nearly a riot broke out... lol

    • @Peter_LiveMusic
      @Peter_LiveMusic  Місяць тому

      Hi Tank. Old Hugh (and I say that with love and respect) put on another wonderful show. Of course, there were those in the audience who didn't want to hear anything but Strangler songs. They should probably stick to tribute bands in future. His solo material is very different to his early punk days. I believe it was largely music differences which caused him to leave The Stranglers. Anyway, we got way more than just two songs, which in itself was enough to be very pleased with. No riot, just people lining up for autographs and a chat. Thanks for the comment, mate.

    I was at this concert. I was disappointed. Hugh really needed keyboards in his band. Skin Deep sounded awful without the keyboard riff, no Golden Brown (could have simulated the harpsichord part on keyboards) no Walk On By. I see I'm at odds with the other comments but that's my opinion.

    • @Peter_LiveMusic
      @Peter_LiveMusic  28 днів тому +2

      Respect your opinion. I too missed the keyboard but I also enjoyed Hugh's guitar playing which went in its place. 'Golden Brown' was played at some of the other shows. Personally, I was very pleased to get 'Hanging Around' which 'Golden Brown' replaced at those later shows (just the luck of the draw). Having seen him on his last visit I knew what to expect. I certainly don't grudge him concentrating on his post-Stranglers' material. After all, it's by far the greater part of his musical career. Thanks for commenting.

      This ain't The Stranglers, it's Hugh Cornwell and he puts his own interpretations into old classic Stranglers tunes, might be a bit boring if he played them the same way he did back in the seventies and eighties. His solo material is my preference. All the best
