  • UNDERGROUND Comics Featuring CHERRY Poptart, Richard Corben's ROWLF and H.P. LOVECRAFT adaptations. Plus 1950's Funnies with art by Rick Veitch, Crumb and Moscoso in ZAP, and Spicy Brinke Stevens comix.
Underground comics or comix surfaced in the late 60's and saw their heyday in the 1970's and 80's. These comic books were often satirical, political, and typically X rated for adults only.

Believe it or not, if bought a copy of Rowff from a Berkeley CA famous comic book store named Best of two worlds ' way back in about 1978. At the time, I was a avid Corben fan awed by his fantastic airbrush work and amazing stories. Grabbing anything I could find, from heavy metal, to last gasp stuff😂❤

Strangely enough, Ricky, I believe it was 1978 at a convention when I bought an early issue of Metal Hurlant (French Heavy Metal) that had the first Corben (Den) I'd ever seen. I was hooked immediately! The dealer was none other than Bud Plant who was the distrbutor for Metal Hurlant in the U.S. at that time! Needless to say, Bud Plant also sold all the underground comics including the early Richard Corben undergrounds, some of which I bought from him later.

@horrormike so glad you mentioned skull 4! But you're wrong! Sold out on their site. I didn't even see that issue. And that ' rats in the walls ' is one of the single greatest comic stories I ever read. Inspired me to read the entire collection of Lovecraft way back then. Funny This is before yuzna came out with reanimator and from beyond. You're father's fantastic 👍

@@rickytoddbotelho9555 argh! I'm sad to hear they'e sold out on last gasp. Fortunately, there are reasonably priced copies on ebay. Rats in the Walls! Corben comic art genius!

@horrormike read the entire collection of Lovecraft years ago. When reanimator and from beyond came out from yuzna. The rats story is one of the best horror stories of all time. And if one story sums up the Lovecraft mythos this is the one. If your familiar with dungeons and dragons, there is a companion rulebook called the monster manual that has the entire pantheon of Lovecraft's cathulu monsters in it. Alone, that is a great read in itself 👍💯♥️

You and i talked about the pre-code horror stuff before. but now you whip out the undergrounds. much respect to you, brother. you're hitting all the good stuff. i love the Brink stevens stuff too. she was favorite back then. And she is still rocking today.
did you ever get into the adult scifi-fantasy comics like Heavy Metal ? titles like Andromeda and Lit Up ? there were more i was looking for - but my ComicsCollectors DB is acting up. Cant find any of the covers. anyway, another rabbithole for you to explore if you so choose.

Man, there are so many great underground comics that never get the spotlight they deserve and the funny thing is, a lot of those artists were directly inspired by their pre-code horror comic artists predecessors. I have quite a few videos on my channel about Heavy Metal/Metal Hurlant and then some international mags like Totem and Vertigo which were great.

Absolutely love Rand Holmes, his Harold Hedd books are gorgeous, as is his stuff in Fog City Comics out of Vancouver. 70's Corben is my favourite Corben as exemplified by those issues of Skull. I really dig Charles Dallas's Psychotic Adventures, no actual Lovecraft adaptations but very much in the spirit of ol' Howie. Pretty sure there's some direct adaptations in one of the 70's Marvel horror books, Crypt in the Dark Tomb of Shadows. Alcala doesn't get enough love. Gotta get a copy of 50's Funnies, interiors look great (any Rick Veitch is ok by me) but that cover is awesome.

I forgot to mention in the video, that 50's Funnies cover is by Bill Stout. Rand Holmes does not get the props he deserves, fantastic underground comics artist.

I used to have a 1st edition 1st printing of a retrospective on Alfredo Alcala’s art. Great artist. Of course, Corbin was the best!

Yes! Alcala's stuff is amazing, not sure how many underground comics he drew but he did a ton of Eerie/Creepy stuff. Corben's Lovecraft adaptations for early undergrounds are fantastic!
