Hey Bear and whatnot! I am a palliative care chaplain at a hospital in Denver. Each day we start interdisciplinary rounds with a short reflection, usually an inspirational quote or something. Today I instructed our entire team to come up with the five liquids they would dispense from their fingers. Each member of the team (doctors, social workers, chaplains) spent the whole day discussing, looking up various liquids (some NSFW), and crafting their perfect starting five. You have brought joy and levity to a sometimes difficult place to work. Thanks for being a source of fun and a reminder that we don't always have to take ourselves so seriously!

After roasting Brian for his question, Nate "let me make it better" - "if it's a 20hr flight, give me 10 and then give me 8, that's how I'd do it." And no one mentioned that Nate would still be 2hrs from the destination...

    • @nathanielwiens

I feel like he deserves to be wherever he ended up lol I thought the question was quite reasonable and it was interesting that they had to hem and haw around it for so long and roast Blueberry when the answer, as we found out later was simply 10hrs. I thought we were about to have another Cow-gate on our hands.

It's hilarious how The Atlantic wrote an article calling Nate "the nicest man in standup" because they never met someone with a southern accent before 😂😂😂 Nate is basically a NYC comedian, anyone at this table is "nicer" than him. Love the pod 👍

Yes he is nice. He just likes to tease and thinks it’s funny and entertaining. His cohosts know they are getting a lot out of being on this podcast due to Nate’s popularity, so they are going to take it with a grain of salt and are also grateful to Nate for bringing them on. Also, I think by “nice” The Atlantic also meant “clean” (no cursing) and non-political in his comedy.

From the layover question to altruism to the chicago fire (and in line with last week's Dunning-Kruger discussion), Nate can fall into this routine when he's in a mood: I don't understand this thing, so you're the dumb one and I'm going to rant about how you're the dumb one because I don't understand the thing.

I've been kind of worried that the younger crowd might be bored but after listening to this episode, I've decided to go back through the podcasts and write down all of the best questions/comments like the 5 finger liquid one, and throw them out every day and see what mayhem ensues. Except for Lindsay's altruism which might start a fight.

Nate, Dusty, Aaron and Black Bean Breakfast Burrito -
My husband and I have been huge fans since we stumbled across Nate’s special, Tennessee Kid, in 2019 one night while browsing Netflix. We didn’t know what we were in for, but we laughed so hard we cried, and we have been hooked ever since. Now we have a fun hobby following stand-up comedy in general. It’s a nice escape from our daily lives as full-time working parents of four.
The reason I felt the need to comment this week is because I am the corporate dietitian at Panera Bread. I manage the nutrition, ingredient, allergen and food policy information that you see on our menus. Aaron - thank you for being a Panera fan! I have heard you mention Panera a few times. Nate - I hope you give us another try. Though Aaron prefers our drive-thru locations, there is still the option to walk into a bakery-cafe and order, plus there are calorie counts on all the menu items which I know is something you pay attention to. So many options to choose from - from bakery treats to specialty coffees & drinks to salads to sandwiches to soups to warm bowls to flatbread pizzas! You can’t go wrong.
Thanks for the continued laughs, gentleman! See you in St. Louis in October, Nate!

When Nate says something crazy like, "if you got $10 million you couldn't retire." I just have to shake my head. Even if I got taxed at 40% and had $6 million left, I could retire. I will only have a high tax liability the first year. If I place that money in various high interest accounts I can live off of the interest alone going forward, for the most part. (for example, 4% on that amount is $240,000. I make 1/5th of that right now. I think I'd be just fine.)

When I returned the next day, I asked someone where the parking garage was and they pointed me to a tram. Ten minutes into my tram ride I thought “I did not take a tram to get here”. I became an instant fan of Nate’s comedy in 2019 after seeing The Tennessee Kid, and have been a weekly listener of the podcast from the get-go. It wasn’t until the last handful of episodes that I noticed a particular ism that comes up occasionally, and thought I’d check in for some answers. I hear Nate consistently say “we’re” instead of “we’ll”. Example: “we’re talk about that next time,” or “we’re be in Nashville next weekend,” etc. Are we supposed to add in the word “going” on our own as a part of the “we’re” contraction? As someone from the Northwest, I wasn’t sure if it might a Southern thing, although I’ve only heard Nate say it. In the altruism discussion,Dusty hit the nail on the head when he said it's about why you help someone, not whether you feel good about it afterwards. As Nate said, of course you're going to feel good about it. Dusty made that point at least 3 times before anyone picked up on it. Also, FYI Aaron, the first syllable of altruism is pronounced like the name Al. Nate got that right the first time. Quite often, by the way, Nate pronounces names right with his first guess.

Since movies come up in nearly every episode (and rightly so!), it still baffles me the movies that Nate will watch and rewatch, yet still has not see Shawshank Redemption. You guys should get together and watch it and review it on an upcoming episode. Let's make it happen!

I flew a red eye from Tel Aviv to San Francisco, just over 15 hours. With the exception of two bathroom breaks, I slept the whole time. I was in the last row by the bathroom. When I woke up after landing, the lady next to me said “you are a champion sleeper”. Needless to say, I prefer less layovers. 😅

Hello folks, love the podcast. I couldn’t help but laugh uncontrollably when Aaron said he wouldn’t want to spend too much time in the Denver airport. My reason for this was that about 5 years ago my friends and I were leaving our spring break trip and ended up at the Denver airport right before what we were told was a horrendous storm called a bomb cyclone was to hit, it ended up shutting down the whole airport and cancelling all flights. It was so bad outside that we physically couldn’t leave to go to a hotel. We had to spend the night in the airport which was interesting to say the least. Wanted to know if any of you have had to spend the night in an airport and/or what you would do if you were in my situation?

Aaron saying that getting a tumor is “worth it to save a few minutes” definitely shows he is the youngest on the show, with no concept of his own mortality. Maybe he’s just trusting in that family money to get a specialist somewhere down the road, so he can afford to worry about a few minutes here and there.

I would argue that some people don’t do things so they will feel good, but so they don’t feel BAD. I’ve always had some anxiety and one thing that triggers it is feeling like I did the wrong thing. If I passed someone looking for their child and didn’t stop to help them, my conscience would eat my soul alive while trying to fall asleep that evening lol

Hey Folks. Hello bear. Went back and was listening to the “Aliens” episode and heard the topic of the Cowboy Church that Beefcake worked in Montgomery. I live in Conroe, which is north of Houston, and there a lot of Cowboy churches. The basis behind it is it’s a judgment free place where you don’t have to dress up (or cowboy wear). Anyone is welcome, but most of them look and feel like you’re at a ranch. Love the show. Coming to the show in Ft Worth later this year.

Love the topic of altruism. I think the thing that gets most confused in this discussion is the difference between “I feel good because I did the nice deed” and “I did the nice deed and then I feel good”. Like Nate says “I reacted on instinct and afterwards whatever feelings I feel don’t matter”. Just because you feel good after does not mean I was hoping to feel good before. Altruism is not impossible; physiologists thinking they’re smarter me and arguing like babies are impossible.

At least one Biscuit is not making the connecting flight. Nate grab you a Hot n Spicy with mayo and cheese only and dip that bad boy in some hot mustard, the bees knees. Thirdly, that snail is going to live the remainder of his life in a small box, possibly in the form of an aquarium. Boom, case solved. Keep up the work!

Nate making fun of college is ironic after the altruism debate. Nate did exactly what college professors try to teach students to do in class: he challenged the professor’s argument by providing examples; he listened as the guys explained that the example good deeds he provided weren’t truly altruistic because they make you feel good; he realized that based on the professor’s definition of altruism, it probably is impossible; and then he concluded by providing his own argument that the definition of altruism is unfair/unhelpful because it is part of human nature to feel good when helping others. Nate would make a great liberal arts college student!

I should've known that after 150 episodes, I shouldn't get my hopes up when seeing a topic. I was super excited to learn more about my home state of Illinois, but felt like bing-bong because the guys kept going off on random tangents. The only thing I came away with is that Illinois was home to the tallest known man, which I already knew. Not to mention, they left out the part how he traveled with the Ringling Bothers circus, and died because of a blood transfusion. Needless to say, 10/10 episode fellas! 😂

We could not leave the airport and there was like no other people in the whole place. Then we hopped on our second flight that was 100 percent full, of people with some kind of viral caugh for 11 hours. Wouldn't recommend that. On the return we had to change plains but it was a run to make our connection. Still not sure if I would want to have a layover or not.
