    I owned a 62 SG back in the late 60s early 70s that I loved. I was hired to fill in with a band and my cut was $50 and it was in Malibu. After our first set I put my guitar in the standard Stage stand to get a drink. Just when I turned away a gust of wind blew and over went my SG. Snapped the headstock off when it hit the deck of the pool. I was devastated! I had it repaired and it was a really good job but I ended up selling it for $100! If I only knew back then what I know now!😭😭

    I bought a 335 with a broken headstock for dirt cheap. Glued it myself. Could see the crack but more importantly it was solid and never had an issue with it. Headstock breaks are not the end of the world

    He ended the listing because it's not in the sold listings. I'll buy it for $300. I know a really good luthier that can do a seamless job. And they are in Indiana. They would know exactly what to do. I have asked them numerous time if certain guitars with cracked, broken or destroyed headstocks or necks are worth buying and would they di the repair.

    Wood and epoxy bonds are very strong when done correctly! So if it was done correctly than that headstock repair job is actually quite strong, at least at the joint itself

  • @Andrew-c9n

    The epoxy will likely bend if it gets hot. Maybe that’s why the repairer embedded nails in it.

  • @joermnyc
    @joermnyc 6 годин тому +3

    The nails seem to be an attempt to act like rebar… I’d have drilled it out for some hard wood dowels, since you do have to accommodate the tuners (and I would have gone for the smallest possible vintage style so there’s less material removed).

    There was one moment when I thought I had seen that Flying V XPL in the hands of the late Alan Merrill (who originated "I Love Rock and Roll") when he appeared on this HBO miniseries, Encyclopedia Brown the Boy Detective. However, though similar, I think the one Alan's character is seen holding in that segment is custom-built.

    Neck breaks seem to hold together better these days when repaired, so requiring radical solutions is not so common. My nephew's dad had '73 SG back in the mid 80s. I remember he was always breaking the neck and getting it repaired. They tried all sorts. He gave up in the end and got rid of it. I wonder if wood glue is stronger these days or something?
    P.S. Gibson necks breaking has become one of those meme things. GIbson had a solution, but folks did not want it. Maple necks.

    0:30 It almost looks like it's smiling.
    At least a couple of those repair snapshots are from twoodfrd I think. Great channel.
    Oh wow that one with the screws is like a silent hill guitar. All rusty and crusty.
    8:20 Wow that finish checking. It really has a neat style to it of its own. Like some kind of abstract labyrinth or like stacked stones or something. Not like the usual kinda stretch marks you usually see. And yeah like you said might've absorbed some cigarette smoke and really darkened the lines.

      Correct… I recognised them from one of Ted’s videos I watched a couple days ago… he’s a great luthier and so interesting to listen to with the history of all things guitar also!

    Khaler with the lock screw in place is really nice. It is too bad most old ones don't have them. they feel so much nicer on the hand than a TOM

  • @1777DK
    @1777DK 55 хвилин тому

    You don't need a miracle worker to replace that headstock. You will end up with a scarf joint, but if you know what you are doing, it is not that big of a deal. I would definitely think repair before I would consider part out value.

    Epoxy is not super strong by itself. Strength comes from what you mix it with. The mixed stuff can be very very strong

    I knocked my Standard off its stand turning to talk to someone. I was pretty sick. I live in Fort Wayne so I took it to Sweetwater. They did such a nice job that guys that have played it have never noticed the headstock was nearly snapped in half.

    I think you were refering to me Trogley? I am super picky about condition and the Ferrai Red Flying V XPL is missing it's Original Hard Case (Tear Drop Style) and they are asking way too much for it so I passed, but thanks for thinking of me! LOL!

    This is actually pretty sick, and I bet it plays ok. When you put them on blast like this I don't think it helps anyone. I don't think anyone's going to be fooled by this clear headstock To be passed off as vintage. Hope he sells it. Honestly it would be worth buying just to review it.

    Why are the pickup rings all bent out of shape?

    • @Trog
      @Trog  5 годин тому +2

      That's especially common on late 80s/early 90s pickup rings. Likely has something to do with the material used to make them

    88 is for late. Hey Trogly what's up he just played it to hard or he pulled a Paul Stanley or Jimmy Hendrix except he didn't light it on fire. What do you think? Oh the epoxy model is that some new model we haven't heard of yet. Does the cab come with it at that price? Another well played guitar. Rather take off a kale than a Floyd. Wow that's some heavy picking. Thanx Trogly.
