Enjoyed your video. I make lots of Walking Sticks and was searching again when I found yours. I will be watching each of your following parts. I am from Missouri also. I use dto arrow hunt in Indiana but never got started again in Missouri. I am now subscribed.
Hadn't made any yet but collecting hickory this summer to dry. I will cut winter hickory to use in a few months. I found putting a little piece of pink tape on the tree before the leaves fall helps in locating the trees in the winter. We have a lot of oaks and not many hickory. Some of my wood cuts are oak.
Great video. I'm a wood guy myself. I know what your talking about carving while it's still green. It gets so hard once it dries out. When turning bowls on a lathe green wood is the best. It just cuts so much easier. Good luck out there!
Just ran across your video. Excellent tutorial, I specially liked the explanation that you gave for cutting below the root and the finger holds and cutting long to allow for splitting
I've been carving. Wood and walking sticks for while now. I usually shape mine while there green. And then wait. A few months and finish it. Then wait some more before I seal it. With poly.
I'm not sure what kind of wood you are using, but put some 1000 grit+ sand paper to it and it shines like poly except natural. Thanks for stopping by my friend and happy carving!
That's the part I like most going out into the woods, looking for Hickory or Osage Orange for harvesting staves.
I agree! It's therapeutic for sure. Best of luck to you

I think wood bowls are cool as can be. You can really show off the beauty of the wood.

Use sumac saplings. They’ll peel like a cucumber in the spring.
The point of cutting them in the winter is to preserve the bark. Thanks for stopping by

I carve ugly sticks ,
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Unless you are talking fishing poles. Lol
So you cut down live trees for a stupid walking stick … how selfish 😢
