Edge work? More likely edge worked by the same thing that broke it, the creek after it washed out. Notice the patina difference on the "edge work" on the tip.
If you get a good knobby piece that splits, pour colored epoxy in small amounts building up to the surface. You can sand this smooth and finish for a different style stick.
Hadn't made any yet but collecting hickory this summer to dry. I will cut winter hickory to use in a few months. I found putting a little piece of pink tape on the tree before the leaves fall helps in locating the trees in the winter. We have a lot of oaks and not many hickory. Some of my wood cuts are oak.
Finished out real nice! Enjoyed the whole series
Thanks for the kind words
Looking good. Now on to part 5
Thanks for stopping by!
I like it. It is unique for sure!
Just finished part 3 of your serices and enjoyed it. Nice job!
Enjoyed your video. I make lots of Walking Sticks and was searching again when I found yours. I will be watching each of your following parts. I am from Missouri also. I use dto arrow hunt in Indiana but never got started again in Missouri. I am now subscribed.
your patience is extraordinary.
Thank you for the kind words. Happy holidays
Very informative !! Ty
Thanks for stopping by!
So you cut down live trees for a stupid walking stick … how selfish 😢
.Hello my friend, since we are there, I hope you are well my friend. I hope you continue making spectacular finds like this. Blessings to you.
Thank you my brother. I don't find much time to get out anymore. I could count on one hand how many times I have been looking in the past 2 years. Hope all is well my friend
.Magnificent day friend, that white tip beautiful and thin like a leaf and the Agate basin with beautiful peeling. Congratulations my friend. Nice to meet you.
That's the part I like most going out into the woods, looking for Hickory or Osage Orange for harvesting staves.
I agree! It's therapeutic for sure. Best of luck to you
Fake find you need a five gallon bucket.%100
Nice video. A few good tips and just pleasant to watch.
Thank you sir
So far, you make the best stick I have seen for what I want. I've seen all the nice carving faces on others, but yours looks practical to use. You make them custom to your hand. Thank you for showing us this. I watched all the parts.
Thanks for the kind words! I'm no artist. Craftsman maybe. I make my sticks to be used not to leaned in a corner and be looked at! Good Ole Ozark hickory makes a great stick! Best of luck to you
.Wow my friend, sensational find.
.Wow, definitely these pieces are parents to a lot of smokers, wow.
Thanks friend. Hope all is well
Should be a realtree commercial!
.Wow my great friend, this is a sensational piece. I had never seen such a beautiful scraper. I did not even imagine that one like this existed, it is a unique piece. My friend, I wish you are well, that you are in good health and in the company of your family. May you have a MERRY CHRISTMAS WITH YOURS AND MAY THE YEAR 2023 BE A GREAT YEAR.
My brother coyote! All is well. That hoe is probably my rarest find and one of my favorites. Hunting has not been good in my area due to lack of rain. This has been my slowest year in a long time. Lacking both rain and motivation. 2023 has to be better! I hope all is well with you my friend. Happy holidays to you and your friends and family
F'king sick bro!! What dreams are made if. Congrats!!
Thanks for stopping by brother
What is a Disqoidle? The spelling?? Very nice finds. I've found game balls, paint pots, and Nutting Stones, A scrapper and some items I'm not so sure about. I suspect they are tools but not sure. Haven't been lucky enough to find arrowheads. My friend found an arrowhead in a parking lot at a park in Pennsylvania. I think someone dropped it out of their pocket. But what a nice surprise.
A discoidal is a game stone that was used in a game called chunky. I believe they rolled it down an alley of some sort while throwing darts at it. Don't quote me on that. Lol. If you are finding artifacts the arrowheads will come. Best of luck to you
The giant blade is very nice.
Thanks!
Nice one
Thanks
Hey Man you do a awesome job. I am a Veteran and I make walking sticks because it is my PTSD therapy . It is nice to do something like this it is good for the nerves. My respect my friend. 👍
Thanks for your service! Every part of the process is therapeutic though my arthritic hands would say otherwise! Thanks for stopping by my friend
Mora, makes some good quality carving knives, at a very fair price. Incase you weren't aware. The walking stick with the bent handle and finger grove's is nice!
Thanks! I have tried some high quality carving knives my father had and the utility and exacto knives work best for me. They are razor sharp and easily replaced. The hickory bark dulls everything quickly. Thanks for stopping by my friend
Since you're not using power tools like a Dremel, this takes way longer than it could take. But a big con for power tools is the saw dust they create
Sorry I missed your comment. The wood is too green to use power tools. The blade or bit would gum up instantly. Thanks for stopping by
Wow! Awsome find man! I bet that made your day!
It was a great find. Thanks for stopping by
.Wow friend blow to the heart but we still love them. Must have been a great piece.
Most definitely a heartbreaker coyote my friend! I still display it like it was never damaged
.My friend Morockin that's a beautiful piece mate. Here the blades are almost always straight, this one is a bit oval, it has very marked notches. very good my friend.
Thank you sir! We have a wide variety of points for sure. Two great rivers meet not too far from me so there was a lot of trading going on as well. Best of luck out there my friend
Try 0000 steel wool, it’s terrific !
Cool, I take my sticks for a walk also, to get a feel for it. I always cut my sticks over length so that if there is splitting on the ends , hopefully it will eventually stop before it ruins the stick or the looks. I cut to length when almost finished. I do “rootie” most often, I am left handed and so my grip often reflects that but, I sometimes shape the knob for a right hander or for either hand. I give away all the sticks I make to people that need a stick or just because ! I have been making canes or sticks since I was a Boy Scout, I am now 76, almost 77 and I only make a stick if I am in the mood. I really like the “grip” you have carved in this stick with the individual finger placement carved out, I may try that if I find the right shaped stick. I am fortunate to live where there is a lot of logging going on and where the state or county cuts back brush along the highway every few years. By cutting along a fence line, the knob forms by the bush growing back, when the diameter gets to where I like it, I will feel down around the roots and if I like the “shape” I will cut it free and bring it home to begin the process of making a stick or cane.
It sounds like we have very similar methods in carving sticks. I also have to be in the mood. I have a stick I carved last winter that is 95% done and I can't get myself to finish it. Thanks for stopping by brother
When I scrape a stick, I use a piece of broken glass, like from a bottle or jar. I wear a leather glove to lessen the chance of a cut. I use a piece of bottle because the glass is thicker and less likely to flake or splinter. Practice and u will be surprised at how nice it looks.
Thanks for the suggestion! Thanks for stopping by
What is the significance of the 3 rings?
No significance. Just habit lol
.Wow friend that big leaf is not normal it is out of reality, wow. Here the artifacts were not so big because there were no pieces of material large enough to make works like that. It is beautiful, translucent, elegant and killer wow. Blessings always my friend.
That is a big one for sure. My area had a lot of material for the natives to choose from. Hope all is well my friend. Best of luck to you
Incredible stick. Wish I had hickory on my property.
Thanks! I have to go to friends property as well.
Love the saw too. What is the brand?
I believe it is a fiskers
Boy , whoever made that one was probably a beginner. Not bad though
.My friend, I have found two almost equal to this one of yours. They are old, here we call them Palmillas.
It is very interesting that the types are so similar in age and appearance from North to South. There was definitely lines of communication between the regions. Best of luck my friend
Awesome!
Thanks!
beautiful shering dear friend stay connected
Thanks
Good to see you finally been able to pound some gravel and put a couple nice blades in the bag. Hopefully our drought days are about over. Hope all is well and always best wishes brother....
Thanks bro. It's definitely been a long dry spell. Not to mention my favorite spots don't put out like they used to. I'm bummed we aren't going to be able to make the show. We have to get together sometime soon. I miss my old buddy. Lol. Good luck out there my friend
Couple real nice pieces to get the year kicked off! That second point is a smoker! Material and craftsmanship! Hope you get into a bunch of great finds. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks my friend. Good luck to you as well
Beautiful finds well done
Thank you sir

Loved both those knives! Great finds!
Thanks brother!
