Chris you have made a really helpful, clear and informative video. I'm glad you are helping so many of us. What a very nice way to use your retirement time!
DPFs are a real PITA, I have a diesel Granada estate project car that will hardly run because of a clogged DPF. When the engine is started, the exhaust manifold colour soon changes from red rust to black iron oxide - that is some heat! The previous owner just used the car to commute short distances in London hence the exhaust got all clogged-up to the extent that the car is undrivable. Good job I had a 4x4 available to rescue the constipated car. Its now just a case of getting around to it but round-tuits are in short supply in the far south west!
Just took my DPF off my focus 1.6 tdci as it had gone into limp mode with a p242f error code. Took about 45 mins to hose and shake it. At first it was some black water(soot) but mainly orange water(ash) i got most of it out in the first 10 mins but wanted to do a thorough job hence the 45 mins and i recommend really shaking it as that is the way i got most of it out. I have now done about 250 miles, mainly motorway miles and the car is much more responsive, was struggling to get 50 mpg but now getting around 65 mpg. So i was quoted around £800 to get a new DPF to be fitted at a garage but it has just cost me £6 for a hose pipe from asda. Will see how it goes but likely i will get rid now. For anyone who has the p242f error code and cant get rid of it with a code reader, there is a little trick which is to take the MAF sensor off then start the engine and when you stop the car you will get another error code which you can then erase along with the p242f error code. Then put the MAF sensor back on. Obviously the p242f will come back until the DPF is sorted. Also with the DPF off, its a very good idea to take the turbo oil feed pipe banjo bolt(lower) off and either replace it or just do what i did and take the gauze filter out of it because these get blocked up and cause oil starvation to the turbo which can cause a turbo failure. I highly recommend regular oil and oil filter changes as these are dirty pain in the ass engines and keep the oil level about three quarters level on the dip stick.
Hey mate I`m startin' to have some issues with my 08 plate Focus 1.6 tdci. Engine drives nice, no smoke or oil consumption yet, however, I have often a split second hesitation between 2500-3000 RPM. Checked the turbo there's some play, and some oil present in the air pipes. Is it straightforward to remove the gauze filter? I mean would I simply see it if I remove the pipe? Is this related to the DPF or why do you say with the DPF off? is it not accessible otherwise? Cheers mate.
I have the 2005 model of this car which doesn't have the dpf. It has been the most reliable and economical car I have ever owned. 150,000 k and no probs 65 mpg. As well as blocking up , the dpf makes the oil dirty which can bugger the turbo. Hi mileage models are best avoided as you will get problems. Either find a 2005 model or buy a 1.8. It's unbelievable how one silly filter, can screw up what is quite a decent car. D.P.F. The work of the devil !😠
If you noticed, most GOOD videographers on youtube actually video themselves doing the job, not the reassembled part afterwards!!! I have one of these to do and as i've just replaced the turbo core, all those pipes and heat shield are already off, so it should be too hard!
great work, I have same car and problem, I'm fairly handy with cars but I don't think I'll be bothering with all that work, I'm surprised you could wash it out, I thought it would be all solid inside the filter. I do find that setting the cruise control to just under 4000rpm for 15mins on the motorway with a hot engine sorts it out but I shouldn't have to do that.
" I do find that setting the cruise control to just under 4000rpm for 15mins on the motorway with a hot engine sorts it out" - I did this last week, I used some Wynns DPF cleaner in a full tank of diesel, and stayed at around 3500-4000 in 3rd gear for about 25 mins, eventually it started coughing and people were overtaking like mad haha. Halfords also do a deep clean for £85, i might give this a go just to finish off the crap thats built up
What issues did you have with the turbo and did you replace it? I had dpf problems and like an idiot I just kept wiping off the codes to knock it out of limp mode. Now my turbo has died due to oil starvation problems. Are the two problems linked do you think? Also I wish I had changed the oil earlier than is recommended as I've read this is a must for the dirty Peugeot lump.
Can the dpf and heat shield come out as one unit? I reckon that would save a bit of mider if it could, i have seen a video for later (2011) focus where the dpf was removed with heat shield still on.
i took mine of my focus tdci what a pain that was trying to get out with the heat shield being in the way and not able to remove separately. I flushed it out with a hose pipe but it came out clear and no dirty water at all do you think. it's possibly had the middle removed although my diagnostics says when it's regenerated last and a countdown until full and shows quite low pressure when engine running but does move do it's clearly not been bypassed on the ecu. There is no physical signs of being cut anywhere. do you think it came out clear because my regeneration works perfectly although I would imagine dirty water atleast either way
Greg Knight hi I did loads of cleaning and it turned out to be my glow plugs 1 was not working so put car in low mode but when I took it out it snapped inside engine and safe mode went of ironically so was that one doing it but another snapped when removing so put it in garage but my engine didn't want to be fixed they couldn't get all of them out so cut my losses gave it away Then found out also turbo was gone even though it seemed fine on inspection so I would guess it's your glow plugs or turbo gone But don't take my word though I'm not a mechanic just fix what I can if it not hard Try find someone who had diagnostics it might show up in there I'm in medway if your close could probably put it on mine in the week if that may help
I suppose its the 109 hp version ? I have the 90 hp version and I have white smoke at cold start up, I don't know what to do. The Purifier filter (Top Cap where you pour oil into engine, I don't know its name in engish) doesn't let too much oil pass, but I still find oil on turbine intake. Do you know how to solve the problem ?
It took me a good 3 hours as I had not done this before and I had to cut the exhaust joint bolts off. I did not replace the filter but washed it out as explained in the video.
Job competed. DPF removed, holes plugged and main body filled to brimming with sodium hydroxide (caustic soda) and left over night. In the morning it was flushed until the water became clear. The DPF was then refitted. Went for a drive, car entered limp mode after 10 mins. Forced a regeneration, then went for a 40 min thrash (motorway in 4th gear). After getting home I re-read the fault codes and seemingly can't shake "P2458 - Diesel Particulate Filter Regeneration Duration". Not quite sure what to do next.
I would take it off again and keep washing it through with water as It must still be clogged. Worth a second go other wise you are in for a new filter, good luck, Chris
+Chris Retired Hi Chris hope your still around, great helpful video. Which way did you flush the dpf out? the way the exhaust fumes go or against it. Cheers.
good vid I got here from a search on DTC 2584...... can you remember if that was your code at the time..... laughed when you said you were getting shot, I just paid a £100 for mine so will stick with it for now. I got the non dpf as well, just as much hassle .... the 1.6 is problem after problem lol
i am gong to sell mine in 6 weeks as mine has blocked , and to the peopl ewho say "just take it on a long journey. that may not always work as these DPFs are aditive regen'd not heat regen'd you can drive the car 300 motorway miles non stop and it still wont clear
Stupidess thing i ever seen you can put a dpf cleaner in your fuel tank and drive over 2500 rpm for 15 mins and problem gone. Regeneration will happen if you make your car heat up enough or if you cook your car down after driving long distances.
+Chris Retired then why does my diesel work fine if you took the right measures before your lights all go off on the dash you would not need to go this far. The reason your car does not have a regeneration is because of short trips and not heating the exhaust and engine up enough. If you see your dpf light do as I explained problem gone leave it till your engine management lights come on and be chris retired the donut.

Quick update, 6 months and 10k+ miles later and still no DPF problems.

where is the MAF sensor?
Along side the air filter
@@beachlife2968 dpf was cleaned/washed with water under pressure ?
Put in back the dpf was wet or dry?

Phil Kasafir, I didn't know Halford did that, does the dpf need removing to clean tho?
Hi could you tell me what the short pipe is just above the DPF
What issues did you have with the turbo and did you replace it? I had dpf problems and like an idiot I just kept wiping off the codes to knock it out of limp mode. great video, likewise the love of my Golf 1.6 tdi has come to an abrupt end ill fix it and sell it

Hi. Just wondering if you need to move the engine before you can take the Dpf out? Is there enough space to pull the DPF out from the top ?
We need to see u actually removing it not talking about it
just a quick question, the dpf sensor that's connected to the dpf, where does it plug into.?
Hello how long should i leave it off the car for it to dry before putting it back on and starting it up as don't want water going through car
You only need to stand it up for a short while to allow the water to drain out then refit and start.
Ok thankyou
i took mine of my focus tdci what a pain that was trying to get out with the heat shield being in the way and not able to remove separately.

paul mason did you ever get to the bottom of this? Flushed my dpf today and water was clear however car in limp mode and no power. Real head scratcher

Do you service it yourself?

That's what I did. Water starts black, then goes cloudy before turning clear. Takes about 10mins or so.

the 1.6 is problem after problem lol
what year make and model is this car, thanks
Next time video the process please
I only thought of doing this after the event but I am sure it will be of some help.
Hi, can u show me PCV valve location in this car?
Thanks
Not something I have experience in, try www.fixya.com/cars/t14984642-2008_focus_pcv_location
Bit late saying now but the pcv valve is the round disc on the rocker cover right of the oil filler cap :)
all dpf's should be took off
Also the heat sheild is a total pig to remove (newbie engine tinkler)
i am gong to sell mine in 6 weeks as mine has blocked , and to the peopl ewho say "just take it on a long journey. that may not always work as these DPFs are aditive regen'd not heat regen'd you can drive the car 300 motorway miles non stop and it still wont clear
Buy the 1.8 they don't have the dreaded dpf
Stupidess thing i ever seen you can put a dpf cleaner in your fuel tank and drive over 2500 rpm for 15 mins and problem gone. Regeneration will happen if you make your car heat up enough or if you cook your car down after driving long distances.
You are wrong, I tried that and it did not work prior to removal. You are obviously inexperienced in these matters.

That's only true to a point. It'll keep building up with soot which a regeneration will sort, but once it's full of ash, a regen won't do anything.
