My cold start is 30% of that due to glow plugs and relay . Think dpf out does lot more smoke on cold start. I also get rpm flicker for 5 secs then stable to 700 rpm. Once started and warm rpm flicker isn’t there only on cold start. Maybe this is glow plug issue??

When removing the DPF the car should get a remap or be coded to get rid of the check engine. The smoke on cold starts probably is from bad glow plugs ( or relay or both :D), because it doesnt idle good when it starts and the smoke is a lot.

If everything is working correctly and You change oil on time turbo will outlast the engine. DPF get clogged because some else is faulty like injectors, boost leak or faulty egr. DPF itself it's almost never a reason, only a result of something else working wrong. People don't maitain their cars and later they complain they work wrong. I've seen many 400kkm (250+kmiles) cars with great condition stock turbo everything, just maitained correctly and don't driving around with constantly clogged dpf for a year. A friend had the DPF removed from his Euro 5 Ford Transit (130 PS). It had been used as a delivery van, so often driving in just 1st and 2nd gear and stopping every 200 metre s. The engine was remapped at the same time. It now has nearly 150 PS and goes like a rocket. The work was done three years ago and, now with 220,000 miles on the clock, it still passes the emissions element of the annual MOT test.

I would absolutely recommend DPF removal for any diesel owner. The pros are huge! I did it on all my cars. I have a new 340D. DPF removed and EGR disabled. Zero smoke. Old M47/57 engine are smokey anyway. ( and btw, it looks like you removed catalytic converter as well as the dpf. General there are 2 sections, cat then dpf. Cat can be left in place. It helps with the smoke. New Common Rail engine’s dont smoke. MPG is increased massively, engine oil is as clean as petrol, my cars all passed MOT without fail. Zero engine issues. DPF are the common reason while new Diesel engines fail, turbos fail, carbon soot blockage, etc. My new M340D with downpipe is an absolute weapon. My old 535D ran for 200,000miles without a single fault. Never had chain issues or anything else. DPF removal ftw!

Hey, maybe you can help me out, hopefully lol.
I had an exhaust temperature sensor problem (error code P246E00) so I replaced it, then the car went into limp mode and the coil, engine management, and dpf light came on, tried to get somebody to clean the dpf with this dpf spray cleaner stuff and it didn't work.
One day (for a fill 24 hours) the car automatically came out of limp mode and then I accidentally drove through a puddle and I believe water splashed up onto some of the sensors on the underside of the car and it went back into limp mode within 3 minutes of that happening (puddle).
I just got the dpf removed, egr delete and a remap but now after like 3 days the coil and engine management lights are back on. I don't know if the dpf sensors still have to be working to prevent the car from trying to do a dpf regen even after removal (I don't know if the map codes these sensors out).
Any help would be massively appreciated, I'm taking the car back to the guy on Tuesday but I've been checking on loads of different forums online to no avail.
      Thanks in advance

Hey. I tune alot of diesel cars and deleting DPFs is nothing new to me. The smoke you are seeing on cold starts is not a side effect of removing the DPF; that is probably a glow plug (or multiple) that are not working. Secondly I would get a quality remap done where the DPF is also deleted in the software; you would also see quite a nice HP increase.

If they built DPF's the way you can manually clean them, like take it to workshop on the lift. Just get filter out in 5 minuts, clean it once a year with some chemical designed for this purpose during oil change then this suckers wouldn't be such a problem anymore but they build them so you can't do this. You need to take the whole thing out and clean it under high preassure. The result, cloggd DPF will break your car by damaging turbocharger, EGR, O2 sensors. If you have swirlf flaps or some other ridiculous elements of the exhaust system it will all break or get clogged. Sometimes before you realize you will you will burn so much oil due to a damaged turbocharger, you burn out half of what the filter was supposed to retain. Filters are designed to meet emission standards only for a certain period of time. In my opinion, manufacturers should be obliged to cover the DPF filter with a warranty for 500,000 km, including damage caused by its clogging. Then they would design them completely differently and people wouldn't cut them out, but this whole ecology thing is one big farce and a way to make even more money. Now, finally, imagine how many tortured by hat cars were scrapped and replaced by others that someone had to produce and use raw materials for production, which do not appear out of nowhere and are not transported through magical portals to factories. I am absolutely in favor of reducing emissions, but I am also absolutely against doing it the way we do it now. The consumer should have a warranty for all this that is much longer than for the car itself, because without this, manufacturers will design it the way they do just to meet emission standards and smart ass customers will get rid of it right after warranty expiration probably saving a lot of money.

The secret to making an M57 engine live longer - regular oil changes, swirl flap blanking, EGR disabled, and DPF "service". I have taken an e90 330d to 215k miles and it was tuned to as far as you can go with stock parts. Similar story for an e90 335d. I have also had an E65 730d but the engine blew up. Why? Swirl flap killed the engine. I also had an early M57 in an e39 530d... it didn't really have any of these systems, the engines were unstressed in their stock tune and just kept going.
As for the exhaust smoke... I know that with an emptied DPF, it basically acts as a huge condensation collector. Under certain weather conditions it belches out water vapor and for longer than you'd think. But, I think some people are right - glow plugs or the control module for them are malfunctioning. Especially important as you're in Norway... nice and cold this time of year. I'd imagine the MOT testing is done with a warmed up engine in Norway?

I'll try to share my experience in regards to emissions systems on diesels. 1st car: 2008 Alfa romeo 159 2.4 liter diesel engine with 210hp. With DPF+CAT+EGR+swirl flaps in the intake the cars fuel consumption city couldn't go below 12.5liters/100km. Car got mechanical removal of DPF+CAT+swirl flaps , egr delete and a software coding to "turn off" those systems. Result : same car, same driver, fuel consumption dropped to 9.5 liters/100km. Smoke problems on newer diesel cars are mainly related to fuel injectors and lugging your engine while driving at lower speeds.
2nd car is 2002 Seat Toledo with the famous 1.9 tdi 110hp. That is my daily car, and without removing anything it used 6.5liters/100km in city driving. Tires were Dunlop Sportbluresponse 2 195/65 r15. I have removed the rear muffler and went with 225/45 r17 wheel setup. Fuel consumption dropped by 0.8liters/100km. It still has egr(turned to minimum with VCDS). DPF contains palladium that is very expensive ore and has a high refund when scrapped. Does it filters particles-yes, but have you ever driven behind car that has one and you feel that "rotten eggs" smell in your cabin? Voila, you have just inhaled the same "nasty" emissions from that car just with reduced size that not even surgical mask can hold, they attach to your bronchioles unlike old diesels that definitely pollute but have larger size particles. You want an efficient diesel? Remove dpf, turn it of, leave the CAT, if EGR is controlled by vaccuum, leave it on, get a catchcan and clean your intake manifold. And most important thing-enjoy wrenching 😁.

On the 535d, I removed the dpf and closed the egr, while doing the obligatory remap of the software.
A little smoke will appear when the weather is cold and the engine is cold, then when you suddenly add gas, then the fuel cools the pistons suddenly and does not burn fuel well, but it is nowhere near as much as in the video.

Anything prior to Euro 4 may not be a problem. From Euro 5 onwards, it could likely cause engine damage & send your car into Limp mode if the DPF is removed . There are sensors linked into the cars ECU etc . Probably not a good idea . But in countries with pretty lax emissions standards, you'd probably easily get away with it. Anywhere on Euro 6 or 7, wouldn't be worth the risk

Fed up with blocked DPF so had it gutted and the DPF and EGR mapped out , not a performance remap. no issues whatsoever, no smoke or smells. Passed MOT fine. I only use premium fuel and Shell Ultra oil so hopefully my engine is pretty clean inside.
One thing if anybody knows - ive seen egr blanking videos and they also remove the butterfly inside the throttle body so its open with no restriction. Ive seen that mine is still in place but is mapped to stay open all the time. I guess this i s ok ?

Removing yields less back pressure, less strain on turbo, this also results in less soot getting pushed by the piston rings and you will not need to run low ash oil. and you will get better sound.
If you delete dpf heating and regen from ecu you will gain some economy. Engine will have to do marginally less work and produce less heat. Using less diesel. (Marginal).
You will let tiny diesel particulets and nox out into atmosphere, theese are very dangerous, especially if you also remove cat. On newer common rail diesel, unburnt diesel mist is so microscopical that the hairs in your nose and lungs will not be able to stop it, and you will get the toxins directly into the bloodstream when breathing in the smoke.

Basically don’t do a DPF delete without programming the ecu to map out the dpf function other wise you will have some kind of negative effect example more smoke or constantly trying to regenerate which will either fill the sump with diesel as it injects more fuel in regen mode and escapes past the piston rings and worst case destroy the engine because of this

in Arizona (USA) removing DPF is sort of like pot, illegal on the Federal level but legal on the state level 😁 this year our EPA (environmental protection agency) made it illegal for any shop to remove cats of dpfs, that means we have to do it ourselves or go to a un-registered shop that will do it for us. BTW a 200 cell high-flow cat on your mid pipe will get rid of the smoke and odor (for the most part)

I’ve had an E34 524td, an E39 525tds and 530d, and an E61 525d (2.5). None of them had a dpf and none of them smoked on cold start. You want to start checking resistance on your glow plugs (iirc around 1 Ohm and all within 0,2 Ohm of each other). Very common failure point on these engines are the plugs and the relay, but you want to check the wiring too. If all that checks out, I’d suspect a leaking injector.

as a Diesel Mechanic that works on semis/box trucks and pickup trucks i can say, with every fiber in my body, that EVERY single Diesel engine is better WITHOUT dpf and EGR than WITH. emissions are the only reason for both of these features and i assure you, they do not help with longevity. it is not even up for debate.
though, with that, requires a complete remap and if you have a VGT you will need someone that REALLY knows their shit. there should barely be any soot out of the exhaust at full load/boost. if there is, its too much fuel. if its coming out blue, thats straight unburnt fuel. raw diesel. common rail fuel injection with their unreal high pressure allows for A REAL efficient burn in the cylinder. hell.. my old 1998 12.7 S60 detroit engine with a 550hp remap at 1850tq doesnt blow a puff of black out of the exhaust. 1.3 million miles. 6.5-7.2.mpg 63mph cruising speed.
