Some of the best How To videos are the "don't do what I did" videos. It's best to learn from other people's mistakes when possible. A year after I first watched this video, I'm finally ready to paint my 27 year old Hijet Japanese mini truck. Based on your recommendations, I got three gallons so I'd have plenty to paint the exterior, interior and two large ammo cans (inside and out) that I'm using as tool boxes. I also ordered extra rollers that I'll swap before they break down, and I'll definitely use brushes for corners and other cut in and then use light pressure on the rollers to spread the bed liner and texture it. I saw a tip in another video to use scissors to trim the corners from the outside of the rollers to prevent those high wear areas from breaking off into the paint job.
Very good points! I Monstalined two Tacoma’s. First one I rolled, second I sprayed. After fighting with those damn rollers falling apart I said I’d never roll again. The second definitely took much more time to prep but spraying a whole coat is much less time consuming. I think 30-40 mins the first coat was done. We got a much cleaner look after spraying. The gun is nice. Easy to clean just throw it in a bucket with xylene and shake around. I plan on doing some more projects this spring. I sprayed outside to keep from covering my shop. I have gravel in the driveway and we just started very early when the dew was still on the ground. Thanks for the vid!

I built a small camper, starting with a scratch built aluminum trailer, then 5/8 inch hardwood plywood for the exterior, an inch of polyiso insulation and 1/4 plywood for the interior. I covered the frame with black Monstaliner and the cabin with desert sand Monstaliner. We (my wife and I) started with sealing all of the wood with spar urethane before we assembled anything. Then the frame was painted with automotive primer (as specified by Monstaliner) all of the metal parts of the camper that were covered with the Monstaliner were primed first). For both wood and metal, we covered everything with the 'required' coat of Monstaliner's 'chassis saver'. One thing I noticed in this video is that he didn't do the base coat prep work that Monstaliner says is critical; since he was covering paint, he may not have needed the automotive primer, but the Monstaliner representative was adamant that the 'chassis saver' (a thick metallic silver) layer was critical to longevity. (This is his third vehicle, but he doesn't say how long the other two have been covered or whether it has been long enough to comment on durability without using the specified undercoating.) Then we rolled on the actual Monstaliner top coats. I'm not sure that leaving out the base coats will result in a long lasting finish. We DID order extra rollers, and you WILL need them. And we did attract bugs (we were working in an open shed), which were a bit aggravating, but we removed them without too much trouble. His tips on applying the Monstaliner itself are very good and our experiences were much the same.
@@nowhere4U I'm sorry, I don't remember. We covered the aluminum frame and fenders in black and the body in desert sand - several gallons. We had to make a second order, because we underestimated how much we would need (and we used sealer coats on both frame and body).

I have to paint an RV exterior. The reason I wanted Monstaliner over Raptor and Durabak is the longer working time. However, Monsta wants us to use those thick heavy rollers. Durabak you can apply with mohair rollers. I don't need texture. Is it possible to use a mohair roller instead? What about lining the tray with aluminum foil for each new coat?

Dang, that's a tough one. I overbought and over mixed just because I was afraid it would spread too thin or I would run out. But my guess would be the interior surface area of the tub would be about the same as the exterior surface of the TJ. Maybe measure the surface area of the inside, and the surface area of the outside like I painted, and compare the two. Sorry I'm not more help. Good luck with your project 🙂

Thanks for sharing your simple but very valuable tips. I was looking at spraying Raptor liner on a 26 year old Daihatsu Hijet 4WD pickup, inside and out, that I just bought from Japan. I thought rolling on bed liner would be a sloppy low quality method that was durable but not attractive, but I love the finish you showed in the video, and easier cleanup and less masking prep work are huge advantages. I'll probably get 2 gallons of gray Monstaliner for the little white Hijet and three gallons of black Monstaliner for my black 2005 4Runner. Is there any extra prep work required before applying Monstaliner to the plastic body panels on the 4Runner?
IDK for sure, but just make sure you clean it well with something like MEK, and I would scratch it as well, you know scuff it with a heavier grit like 200 and get as much shine off it as possible.
@@anesthesiadreamin - Raptor recommends scuffing painted metal surfaces before applying their polyurethane bed liner, with their Adhesion Promoter applied over plastic and in areas where paint scuffing is difficult to achieve. It's weird to take a nylon abrasive cup brush to the paint on my SUV that I've been trying to protect, but once I commit to the bed liner paint job, proper surface prep will help ensure maximum success.

Yes I almost did this in Orange, I also considered the neon green, but I settled on bloodbath red. It took me weeks to decide, it is a hard decision, maybe you need to buy a Jeep for every color LOL Good luck on your project
Glad I found this. My wife and I have been wanting to try this stuff for years ! Our 98 forester is in desperate need for paint now and we agree this is the best solution. How flexible is this stuff ? Cuz I'm debating on whether or not I'm painting the black plastic or not.
I have never painted flexible parts with it. However, I found a bucket a few weeks ago (after painting from 3 years ago) with a layer still inside, i peeled it out and it was still quite flexible. You could bend it pretty dang far before it cracked. But again, i just have no experience with that. Thanks for watching and commenting!
1) Cut in with brush. Do NOT use roller to cut in. Cut in and roll only one panel at a time. 2) Immediately follow cut in areas gently with the roller. This will make each coat more uniform and rollers will last longer. 3) Order extra rollers. Worn out rollers will leave chunks of roller in the finish. 4) Do NOT try to save rollers by putting used roller in bag and in the fridge. That won’t work. Just order more rollers! 5) Have extra roller handles ready to use because rollers get stuck on roller handles after only an hour. 6) Do large panels first like hood, etc. 7) Change to new roller for each coat. 8) Chunks can break off of already used but not fully dry paint paddles too. Buy extra paint paddles. One for each coat or thoroughly clean each paddle before mixing next coat. Maybe put paddle in can with acetone?? 9) Pull chins out with scissor type tweezers while paint is still wet and the paint will flow around where you pulled out the chunks. 10) Paint was ready to redcoat in two hours in 70 degree low humidity weather. 11) Do not try to touch up or roll over dry spots on panels after a few minutes because it will screw up the texture. Instead, even out those areas when you do the next coat. 12) 14:28 Recap.
I am prepping for spraying Monstaliner and I am concerned about the Torx screws, will the Monstaliner fill the Torx head making it difficult to remove? Did you fill the Torx screw hole with anything? Will Monstaliner seal the Torx screw in the hole itself? What about any empty screw holes?
I've sprayed 4 Crown Vic Police Interceptors and one Subaru.... I would rather prep with tape and paper than "roll" an entire vehicle... The spray method is quick and comes out beautifully. 30 mins to spray the first coat, let dry 2 hours and spray it again (takes less time, about 20 mins) and DONE! It's all about the prep, which usually takes an entire day or two. Just be sure to remove the tape/paper while the Monstaliner is still tacky.
Dan's Garage yes, the liner bulked up on the hinge edges on the hood and doors and had to be trimmed to get the doors on. surprisingly the back gate hinges didn't stick or flake away
You're asking the million-dollar question!!! So far after 3 years everything is holding up, it is sticking well, but I have never put it in the bed of a truck which would obviously get a whole lot more wear and abuse than putting it on a body.
Would you recommend it for the frame or axles or transmission and transfer case? Is it the best product, in your opinion, for these items especially for protecting the truck's underside against the winter salted roads?
Let me first say this, I have never used it for any of those applications. Monstaliner can chip from rocks hitting the front of the vehicle, but in my experience is much harder to chip than paint. But if you are comparing it to undercoating, I believe monstaliners Bond to itself is much stronger than undercoating. But keep in mind monstaliner was designed as a bed liner, where you scrape the existing paint for good adhesion. Applying monstaliner directly to metal should be fine, i just have never done it. Now you have piqued my interest, I am building 2 axles for a four-wheel drive, and now I might have to use monstaliner!!!
snapcrack55 we did the tundra about 1.5 yrs ago, the xterra about 9 months ago, and the jeep just a couple months ago. all 3 have lost that initial bright shiny-ness, but the color has not faded on any of them. we were snowbusting last weekend and i slid into some heavy branches and drug them all the way down the drivers side, which would have scratched/gouged regular paint, but didnt mar the monstaliner at all
I have had the tub of my TJ done since 2010. I used the black it is still black. There is no noticeable wear despite 80 k miles of wear. the finish has definitely dulled to a matte. Still well pleased with results.
I have never tried one, but my understanding is it would just smear the product around... The rollers that come in the monstaliner kit have fairly rigid fibers with variable sized "holes", sort of like a Loofa sponge, and as you roll the product on, the back side of the roller lifts the product into little points that quickly settle down into bumps that give u that textured bedliner look. You might be able to get a smooth finish with the regular roller, but IDK

Sorry bro, I don't know, I've been wondering that myself in case I ever change my mind, but I think if it ever fades or gets damaged somehow, I would just Scotch-Brite it down to dull and reapply it. Have you contacted monstaliner about removal?

How did you paint the door jambs and the soft top channels? I'm planning to monstaline my jeep, but I'm still thinking about how to paint those sections. Also could I use my soft top if I paint the channels? Im worried if the thickness would keep me from using my soft top. Thanks!
I just removed all hardware possible, including the softop mounts, then sanded / "scotch brited" the best I could up inside the channels, washed the whole vehicle, used a brush to dab and brush monstaliner into the channels (obviously you can't roll there), but honestly, I don't have the factory soft top, I have the "softtopper" brand soft top, so I unfortunately can't comment on how monstaliner would affect it's installation.
I saw another video about painting a car with bedliner and the guy was saying that he didn’t like Monstaliner because the finish was dull and porous so attracted dirt and grime that he wasn’t able to clean off. Has that been your experience with Monstaliner?
I haven't had the problem with dirt, or collecting dirt or looking dirty. After about 4-5 years it did start fading pretty badly however. My Xterra sits outside at 7500 ft, so the UV exposure is pretty terrible for it. It never got to go in a garage. I think it would look a lot better if it hadn't sat out the sun for so long. I think this is typical of bed liners to fade and chalk, but maybe there's a brand out there that doesn't. I would like to know what it is. Any ideas?
@@anesthesiadreamin Nah, no recommendations from me. So even after fading 4 or 5 years later the Monstaliner doesn’t tend to embed dirt and road grime thus making it hard to clean?
Micah Watts I have only used the recommended roller b/c i wanted the rough texture. I bet u could get a smoother finish with a soft roller, there are no chunks in the monstaliner, but u would have to experiment with it, mayb buy the smallest can, mix it and try several types of rollers. Although I bet monstaliner people have already tried all that. BUT that would make a great youtube vid hint hint!!!
If you are talking about lines, you just have to be vigilant in your inspection of your progress as you roll a panel. You need good lighting for sure! Look across the panels at different angles. This "re-inspection" takes a lot of work. Sags can happen easily on the vertical panels, so I tend to make my final roll on the sides vertically, whereas rolling horizontally on side panels the material seems to settle in the "down" side of the roller and cause a sag line at the lower edge of the roller. I have a couple lines on the TJ, a few on the Tundra, but only one on the Xterra. Also if you push down on the roller, it tends to compress the roller and material will flow out the sides and make lines. Don't squish the roller trying to get more material out of it! It damages the roller, causing it to disintegrate and break apart and leave chunks in your paintjob (as well as lines). You will also get lines if you paint the vehicle (first or second coat, it doesn't matter), and then go around hitting it in intermittent places with the roller (because a drying panel hit with wet paint is OK as long as you cover the whole panel again, don't hit a drying panel in random areas to cover bare or light spots), it screws up the texture and makes lines. This is a fantastic product, I just wish I knew all this stuff before I painted the first one!
wally buckingham pull the tape immediately. If it hardens you will peel paint off the body with the tape. Monstaliner, when dry, will stick to itself bettee than the body. So yes pull the tape while wet
2gal for sure if u r doing a color change. U could get away with 1.5 gal if just doing exterior. Of course if u do the tub it might add an extra gallon

what color is that coded at? I received some different red paint chips but it looks way different on your jeep through the video than the little chips I have.
Doing my TJ soon, if the weather in Vegas stays warm enough, and this really helped. Doing black on hardtop, fenders, and bumpers with dark grey on body. Will post pics and video (if I do one). Thanks again.
Good luck! I think in the future I will do as BassNyaface99 suggested below and just buy several rollers and setting a timer and getting a new one every 20 minutes. I bet that would solve my problem of roller fragmentation.
1.5 gallons, so I ordered one 1 gallon kit and two 1 quart kits. I used a one quart kit initially to do the color change, ie, the inside of all the doors and the inside of the hood. Oh and I used one 1 quart kit in black for the rocker panel guards and the grille
So the truck and jeep are gone now, the Xterra is holding up structurally (no flaking, chalking or chips) but is beginning to fade and get dull. I think its been about 3 years now since i ML the Xterra. The Xterra has never been garaged, it is always exposed to high altitude UV all day every day. So im not surprised it is fading. But would I do it again? Absolutely
I just paint my cj7 whit montaliner desert sand I used my air compressor and the texture is really ruff I don't not I cand used a roller to smooth a little bit
I sold this jeep six months ago, still looked quite good. The new owners like the uniqueness of the monstaliner. I have noticed that the initial brightness does fade after a few months into more of a flat color rather than the gloss that it starts with. Other than that, yes very tough, resistant to scratches, branches, and brush that we drove through. My next jeep will be an XJ, and it will get monstaliner for sure

Question. Some of the Monstaliner products seem a little too glossy for my taste. Any idea if it would be compatible with a flat clear over top of it?

What type and size compressor did you use to spray the liner??

How does the spray texture look compared to the texture in this video? Using a shutz gun?

Kinda off topic, but how durable is the monster liner, like how dose it wear over time and what is it going to look like 10-15 years down the road?
You're asking the million-dollar question!!! So far after 3 years everything is holding up, it is sticking well, but I have never put it in the bed of a truck which would obviously get a whole lot more wear and abuse than putting it on a body.
Would you recommend it for the frame or axles or transmission and transfer case? Is it the best product, in your opinion, for these items especially for protecting the truck's underside against the winter salted roads?
Let me first say this, I have never used it for any of those applications. Monstaliner can chip from rocks hitting the front of the vehicle, but in my experience is much harder to chip than paint. But if you are comparing it to undercoating, I believe monstaliners Bond to itself is much stronger than undercoating. But keep in mind monstaliner was designed as a bed liner, where you scrape the existing paint for good adhesion. Applying monstaliner directly to metal should be fine, i just have never done it. Now you have piqued my interest, I am building 2 axles for a four-wheel drive, and now I might have to use monstaliner!!!
that doesnt look too rough, like it wont trap durt. loks more like a hammered finish. is that right?
Correct, it does not really trap dirt like it looks like it might.

when did you do your 1st project? Monstaliner says 5-year warranty. ...what's the color & long term durability?
snapcrack55 we did the tundra about 1.5 yrs ago, the xterra about 9 months ago, and the jeep just a couple months ago. all 3 have lost that initial bright shiny-ness, but the color has not faded on any of them. we were snowbusting last weekend and i slid into some heavy branches and drug them all the way down the drivers side, which would have scratched/gouged regular paint, but didnt mar the monstaliner at all
I have had the tub of my TJ done since 2010. I used the black it is still black. There is no noticeable wear despite 80 k miles of wear. the finish has definitely dulled to a matte. Still well pleased with results.
What would happen if you used a regular paint roller from the store?
I have never tried one, but my understanding is it would just smear the product around... The rollers that come in the monstaliner kit have fairly rigid fibers with variable sized "holes", sort of like a Loofa sponge, and as you roll the product on, the back side of the roller lifts the product into little points that quickly settle down into bumps that give u that textured bedliner look. You might be able to get a smooth finish with the regular roller, but IDK

Sorry bro, I don't know, I've been wondering that myself in case I ever change my mind, but I think if it ever fades or gets damaged somehow, I would just Scotch-Brite it down to dull and reapply it. Have you contacted monstaliner about removal?

What’s with the rims
How did you paint the door jambs and the soft top channels? I'm planning to monstaline my jeep, but I'm still thinking about how to paint those sections. Also could I use my soft top if I paint the channels? Im worried if the thickness would keep me from using my soft top. Thanks!
I just removed all hardware possible, including the softop mounts, then sanded / "scotch brited" the best I could up inside the channels, washed the whole vehicle, used a brush to dab and brush monstaliner into the channels (obviously you can't roll there), but honestly, I don't have the factory soft top, I have the "softtopper" brand soft top, so I unfortunately can't comment on how monstaliner would affect it's installation.
I saw another video about painting a car with bedliner and the guy was saying that he didn’t like Monstaliner because the finish was dull and porous so attracted dirt and grime that he wasn’t able to clean off. Has that been your experience with Monstaliner?
I haven't had the problem with dirt, or collecting dirt or looking dirty. After about 4-5 years it did start fading pretty badly however. My Xterra sits outside at 7500 ft, so the UV exposure is pretty terrible for it. It never got to go in a garage. I think it would look a lot better if it hadn't sat out the sun for so long. I think this is typical of bed liners to fade and chalk, but maybe there's a brand out there that doesn't. I would like to know what it is. Any ideas?
@@anesthesiadreamin Nah, no recommendations from me. So even after fading 4 or 5 years later the Monstaliner doesn’t tend to embed dirt and road grime thus making it hard to clean?

Have you tried back rolling with a smooth roller to eliminate the rough finish? Is that doable?
Micah Watts I have only used the recommended roller b/c i wanted the rough texture. I bet u could get a smoother finish with a soft roller, there are no chunks in the monstaliner, but u would have to experiment with it, mayb buy the smallest can, mix it and try several types of rollers. Although I bet monstaliner people have already tried all that. BUT that would make a great youtube vid hint hint!!!

If you are talking about lines, you just have to be vigilant in your inspection of your progress as you roll a panel. You need good lighting for sure! Look across the panels at different angles. This "re-inspection" takes a lot of work. Sags can happen easily on the vertical panels, so I tend to make my final roll on the sides vertically, whereas rolling horizontally on side panels the material seems to settle in the "down" side of the roller and cause a sag line at the lower edge of the roller.
I have a couple lines on the TJ, a few on the Tundra, but only one on the Xterra.
Also if you push down on the roller, it tends to compress the roller and material will flow out the sides and make lines. Don't squish the roller trying to get more material out of it! It damages the roller, causing it to disintegrate and break apart and leave chunks in your paintjob (as well as lines).
You will also get lines if you paint the vehicle (first or second coat, it doesn't matter), and then go around hitting it in intermittent places with the roller (because a drying panel hit with wet paint is OK as long as you cover the whole panel again, don't hit a drying panel in random areas to cover bare or light spots), it screws up the texture and makes lines.
This is a fantastic product, I just wish I knew all this stuff before I painted the first one!
What about tapering off. When do you pull the tape?
wally buckingham pull the tape immediately. If it hardens you will peel paint off the body with the tape. Monstaliner, when dry, will stick to itself bettee than the body. So yes pull the tape while wet

2gal for sure if u r doing a color change. U could get away with 1.5 gal if just doing exterior. Of course if u do the tub it might add an extra gallon

Doing my TJ soon, if the weather in Vegas stays warm enough, and this really helped. Doing black on hardtop, fenders, and bumpers with dark grey on body. Will post pics and video (if I do one). Thanks again.
Good luck! I think in the future I will do as BassNyaface99 suggested below and just buy several rollers and setting a timer and getting a new one every 20 minutes. I bet that would solve my problem of roller fragmentation.

1.5 gallons, so I ordered one 1 gallon kit and two 1 quart kits. I used a one quart kit initially to do the color change, ie, the inside of all the doors and the inside of the hood. Oh and I used one 1 quart kit in black for the rocker panel guards and the grille
How are they holding up?
So the truck and jeep are gone now, the Xterra is holding up structurally (no flaking, chalking or chips) but is beginning to fade and get dull. I think its been about 3 years now since i ML the Xterra. The Xterra has never been garaged, it is always exposed to high altitude UV all day every day. So im not surprised it is fading. But would I do it again? Absolutely
i'm just going to dump it on and smack it with my hands in rubber gloves....i'll let ya know how it goes

I just paint my cj7 whit montaliner desert sand I used my air compressor and the texture is really ruff I don't not I cand used a roller to smooth a little bit

Hi jeep brother. I am thinking to do it on my jeep wrangler. How is your experience after almost 3 years of paint job? Any issues so far?
I sold this jeep six months ago, still looked quite good. The new owners like the uniqueness of the monstaliner. I have noticed that the initial brightness does fade after a few months into more of a flat color rather than the gloss that it starts with. Other than that, yes very tough, resistant to scratches, branches, and brush that we drove through. My next jeep will be an XJ, and it will get monstaliner for sure
