    Spoiler warning!
    I think the ending of him commenting that he was hungry was possibly hinting at the cannibalism. Maybe he was possessed by the spirits of the Oshin-sama? I also feel like it was HEAVILY implied that the food being served at the Ryokan contained human meat...

  • @PouresMaggie

    I think, through the interpretation of the bad Engrish, that the ending implies that the character feels like committing cannibalism now, according to the ritual since the seals were taken down and all. Idk honestly, just trying to make sense of that ending XD Loved the atmosphere of the game tho, the creaking of you going up and down the stairs had me on edge, thanks for this!

    • @ValosiTiamata
      @ValosiTiamata 3 роки тому +12

      Since the shrine site no longer had a resident priest, the protagonist became the new priest once he finished the ritual. This means he's connected with the site and its spirits. His comments at the end were because he could feel the pangs of starvation that emanated from the shrine site. He may or may not resort to cannibalism, but it's likely he won't escape that feeling of hunger until there's a new sacrifice or he accepts his role as the new priest. The itching and inability to move may also have to do with the method of sacrifice, as well as the feeling of maggots devouring the upper parts of the body once the volunteer's remains were buried.
      As I point out in my own comment, the game makes a lot more sense if you have an understanding of Japanese religious practices (Shinto was heavily implied as being the specific religion involved at the shrine).

  • @railmacher1303
    @railmacher1303 3 роки тому +26

    Thanks for another great video Chris! So I'm guessing this is a bad ending since the MC has been cursed/possessed by the spirits who were sacrificed to be eaten. The ritual was supposed to entail building a new shrine for the spirits since the old one was torn down to make way for the ryokan, hence room 203 (the original location of the shrine) was haunted by the restless spirits and eventually killed Oshida. The temporary shrine was built in room 203 and seals were placed to enact a barrier to prevent the spirits from harming any more people. But something bad happened, the inhabitants of the ryokan were all massacred before the new shrine could be built. And since the MC tore down the seals to make his escape, the spirits are free to wreck havoc and now has possessed him, since his last words are feeling hungry and to eat something.

    I think the atmosphere makes up a lot for what the game lacked in puzzles and danger. There are so many terrible games out there with no atmosphere at all, so I really appreciate what they did here. I think more puzzles would definitely be an improvement (danger would be a bit hard for me if I were to play it). Really liked the setting -- it was something kind of different. I have only played 1 game that also took place in a ryokan.
    I think the ending definitely implied he was hungry for human meat. Perhaps the spirits possessed him or something, rather than being at rest since they were essentially ignored for a very long time.

    I have done this type of exploring myself. It's very, very interesting to see all the things that get left behind when people move on.
    I thought the artwork of the game, and the sound design was amazing. I think the randomness of the mountain spirit was part of the danger. If you had started with him that much sooner, what with all the repetitively going up and down the stairs, as well as different rooms, he could be a very dangerous creature. Yeah, it lost some of the direct violence you can see in more western games, but there's a certain build-up of "what have I done now?" that I felt for Main Character.
    The doll was explained in a "Folklorist's note" about midgame. (ua-cam.com/video/9JxbGAiG1hI/v-deo.html)
    We, especially those of us who follow your channel and know just enough about Asian-inspired horror to be absolutely terrified of the possible repercussions, have no idea if reversing the ritual was good or bad for the mountain spirit, and therefore good or bad for Main Character. For all we know, you have a friend in the form of Oshin-sama, who will now travel with you.

      It needed to end on that note due to the story. Half the fun of true Japanese horror is the way it leaves you hanging at the end to come up with your own endings.

    Truly, this game needs a proofreader if not a better translation. And though it had its small scare moments here & there, having just that 1 same floating spirit over and over without any variance of threat, becomes a routine exercise of holding your breath than a test of courage..... while hunting down keys. Honestly, the setting and the picking up of all these notes, especially from the folklorist, reminds me of the Fatal Frame series. Even the sound f/x you hear when you save your game IS the very same one as Fatal Frame's. You'd have much enjoyment playing that game, if you haven't already.

  • @nimlasmurr
    @nimlasmurr 3 роки тому +1

    Well, the story had a lot of potential. The actual gameplay is pretty lacking though. Though the translations do need some correcting, they did seem to get the hint through that the ryokan was serving food with human meat in it (if that is actually the case)- as I thought that was the case, and a few others in the comments seem to have picked up on that also; how often they talk about the food in the notes, and I think there was one note in the kitchen from a cook? that spoke of "putting something where the wind reaches but the sun isnt direct".

    This game was super "meh". Chris summed up my own feelings around the 20-min mark when he said it all felt a bit "samey", and I couldn't agree more : with a few exceptions, all the rooms and corridors look similar and the story goes on in circles after a while (room 203 is haunted, abandoned shrine, villagers practiced cannibalism). Also, the spirit is not a threat, it's just a gimmick. Add to that the broken English, the ending, and the fact that this was waaaay too long... Not a terrible game maybe, but not a good one either.

    Lol you know he's played so many horror games when he's wanting it to be more scarier, and here I am closing my eyes every time he turns. This game kind of reminds me of Fatal Frame.

    "I am hungry, even though I don't feel good" is a whole mood. Yeah, this game wasn't that great.. honestly it was exciting when it started to pick up about halfway(?) through with the slamming doors, but then it was kind of a let down.

      There should have been a readme or something available for people who don't understand Japanese culture and religion or only know what they've seen in anime (which is a VERY poor teacher) The game's ending is a lot more intense if you have a better grasp of what's actually going on. That oversight is probably what hurts this game the most.

    I remember watching Suzuha Yumi's stream of her playing this game. It's fully in Japanese and I understand pretty much nothing. The only thing I can clearly understand is: I'm hugely scared.
    Gotta watch this one. At least I can understand the game way better in English / with English commentary.

    It was a decent indie game. At it didn't have the feel of a demo like the one you played a few days ago did.
