    As a white woman who grew up with very conservative racist parents in a deep red state, my take on this is the exact take I’m hearing from POC. My very first thought when I heard her apology was “why are you apologizing to, quote, anyone who was hurt?” Tell us specifically who you hurt. Apologize to black people, Mexican people, apologize to the specific communities you were hurting. Why was it bad to make that tweet about George Zimmerman? Who is he, who is Trayvon Martin, what actually happened? Please Brooke, take a moment to actually educate people about WHY what you said was bad, not just that it was bad. Take that moment to show us that education you’ve gotten in the past 10 years!
    I’m not in the business of talking over POC, nor is this apology even something that I should feel is for me or about me in any way. But I can’t help but to feel she was actually apologizing to ME more than she was to people like D’Angelo.

    • @kristinalobzhanidze124
      @kristinalobzhanidze124 4 місяці тому +954

      You feel that way because you’re right, she clearly addressed her apology to the people that she actually respects, her white peers! I could not imagine a world where people like her care about the minorities they’ve hurt or disrespected. I really think that in her eyes, they aren’t even akin to real people, if she had any friends that were minorities she considered as equals to her, she wouldn’t act the way that she does to begin with. Simple as.

      No like fr. An apology of any case should honestly be like an essay. Get your thesis, your 3 or more points, be detailed, look at both sides etc etc. Give it everything you’ve got to explain the shift/misconception of your actions, don’t leave so much room for thought. Do any less, and the image you’re hoping to portray won’t be 100%. Ofc, something like that (image) doesn’t even need to matter to someone like Brooke, truthfully.

Eventually she started a new channel and is fully honest but it left the worst taste in my mouth knowing her original audience was very much liberal, lgbtq, etc.

    23:40 YES.
    As a white woman who is often in spaces within my career where inequity, bigotry, etc., are discussed and considered, I too have noticed this weird social ladder where white, “progressive” people in those rooms want to continually keep talking about the hows and whys of how non-harmful they have been and continue to be with respect to marginalized populations, when… at least the last time I checked… the entire purpose in those rooms is to be orienting ourselves to existing systemic inequities and the populations harmed by them. So, why are all the non-minorities in the room just trying to win some weird game of proving that they are actually the “best ally” or something?
    Wouldn’t spending your time and energy on *actually* just being an ally (rather than on trying to prove to other white ppl that you’re the most ally of all allies that have ever allied) be a far more fruitful way to *actually* be the type of support for marginalized populations that you’re so desperately trying to prove that you are?!?!

      Worked in the deep South in social work and this was something I preached to so many. I am a white man, what other place do I have in this conversation than to listen and actively participate in the solutions brought to the table. My thoughts and ideas on POC lives is not what is important, because none of that could ever begin to be more important or impactful compared to their lived experience. This isnt to say white people should be complacent or "take a back seat" to reparations or social issues, but there is no situation where its okay for us to be the faces of these movements or claim that our issues caused by systemic racism would be anywhere near compared to POC. Like just sit, listen, and act in a way that the community has been actively stating isn't harmful.

      Huge part of my process of arriving at anarchism is growing up in exclusively white academic liberal/progressive spaces and getting so fucking sick of the constant dog whistles and gaslighting and manipulation, and how they’d seemingly rather become more and more openly racist in doublethink, than just admit they were caught having never stopped being racist in the first place.
      So I stopped listening to them and bothering to take their word for it about communities they harm and just sat and listened to people of color instead. I let myself get angry and confused with myself instead of making people more marginalized than me deal with my white guilt and confusion and rage- if I had questions I looked for answers to them in a way that didn’t demand emotional labor be done for me.
      Brooke is a sort of conservative that could exist flawlessly in white liberal spaces. It’s shocking to them because she’s now masking her hatred the same ways they do.

      People who want to see non-white perspectives, commentary from someone outside one's social sphere or the sphere of the catalyst (majority/rich/famous) figure... they have to actually go out of their way to find minority writers whose content happens to be *qualitatively superior* to the algorithmic schlock and idk what to say, it's absurd and awful.

    This is such a pure example of the difference between "not racist" and being "anti-racist."
    It is not enough to simply decide to stop being actively racist or saying racist things. Anti-racism means that you do the hard work of understanding your own biases, owning up to them, and interrupting racism when you see it. Brooke decided that being "not racist anymore" was enough... until her history bit her in the ass.
    That simply isn't enough, and I think that's a big reason why it is so disappointing whenever folks like Brooke apologize for past behavior.

      Some people are, genuinely, more simple souls. Not stupid, but simple. They struggle to form their own ideas. What they're truly after is feeling like they belong in their tribe and general social acceptance, because that's what makes them feel safe and happy. That's why there's been so much societal backsliding when it comes to saying the r word and fatphobia for example - the people who briefly stopped being openly hateful towards disabled and fat people, were only doing so to feel that social acceptance from their peers again. They struggle to actually conceptualise anyone a little different from them as complete human beings with rich inner lives, worthy of dignity and kindness. I have zero doubt someone like Brooke, who is upset because she's receiving backlash and not because she caused harm to poc, would go back to being hateful if she went back to living in an insular environment where she was praised and found funny for her edgy and hateful language. There's no underpinning of personal morals or values there, she will do whatever gets her the most love and acceptance from her peers. They're saying she said something bad, so it's bad. If they started saying it's okay again, she will think it's okay again.

    1. you take responsibility for what you did by identifying it specifically. you don't need to , and probably shouldn't, say why you did it.
    2. you acknowledge how that likely affected them (the specific people you hurt/wronged, and you need to identify who that is), you can even say how you would feel in that circumstance.
    3. you tell them specific actions you will be taking, and things you will be changing, to make sure that doesn't happen to them again. The bigger the hurt, the more drastic and serious the change needs to be.

    I am conflicted on this, I'm a white guy who in high school fell down the alt right pipeline. I never said straight racist stuff, but I fell down the "white people aren't privileged arr arr arr" bs because I got brainwashed by anti sjw content creators of the 2016 era. I learned once I came out as bisexual the friend group I created and how horrible my beliefs and just all around everything was towards others that didn't look or act like me.
    I got very radicalized during that moment and I'd now align myself as a leftist and regret my past idiocy, and live trying to do right by others that deserve it.
    So on one hand I want to be super grateful and gracious towards those who get called out for past tweets and give them a chance. But at the same time, I'm not the one they need to apologize to. Also how much have you changed if your actions don't trump your past idiocy?
    All in all the only thing I can come away believing is that there is a very real epidemic of teens being radicalized into alt right beliefs because it's easier to appeal to white kids saying they're opressed, then explaining how they're actually privileged. Or telling teen boys the women are actually bitches, and want to steal your manhood, then to learn about the patriarchys effect Something the education system really needs improving on, and something that parents of children need to start enforcing.
    Sorry to ramble, if this makes no sense then ignore my yap session

    • @new0news
      @new0news 4 місяці тому +7

      Ya... I think to me there's like the idealistic world people want to live in and then there is reality. Of course the people affected don't have to accept the apology. They can be hard on brooke if they want to and perhaps they are justified. She isn't owed a platform. But the reality is people are also pretty much allowed to be racist and say racist things as long as it doesn't cross some ever moving line that seems to barely exist. As you pointed out, there is a pipeline that is quick to scoop anyone up and tell them they are perfect and everyone else is at fault and to fight against that pipeline we have to be so much more open minded and kind and patient than any person should HAVE to be.
      You can be as upset about something as you want to be and you can be completely justified to not be patient or not give anyone grace and it doesn't matter because the alt right pipelines is there to dust people off and pick them up and take them in when no one else will. The parable of the prodigal son in the bible is very very contentious but also very reflective of what it is like to be a human on earth.

      Tbh i see where ure coming from but like logically, you actually changed and she's not like you esp since she liked a trump tweet in the midst of it all and idt poc shld give shitty people grace when they themselves cant take themselves cant properly hold themselves accountable. I think in the journey of deradicalisation and reform, i agree with ur latter statement, of how people can be very defensive leading to radicalisation cuz they dont really know much or want to esp when ure taught more conservative values cuz of the really extreme right wing overton window, so if ure someone of privilege ure more susceptible to believing bs since one's experience mirrors the narrative if the overton window more than someone who has experienced it. I understand cuz i had gone thru something similar but as a queer poc who was semu radicalised thru the same pipeline which was gross but even at the same time was quite relatively progressive, which is confusing but i am ashamed and disgusted of my past actions so when i started deradicalising and started actually developing braincells after i saw the harm conservative ideas have done and the reality that screwed up rw ideologues are bigoted idiots after i started actually getting into politics in 2020 after i saw the heartlessness of the world, and learnt abt black liberation, intersectionality MORE and deeper and actual theory like factual not bs and started being more logical and like objective i had to not put my ego in the centre of this i had to help people and change, even if it meant people not giving me a chance because i still hurt them. I still contributed to their oppression i was a victim of the pipeline too but I was also the person who harmed people more powerless than me by playing into a screwed up system. When it comes to reform and deradicalisation idt its fair to hold it up to the people one's hurt to give them immediate, rather repent and reformed for what uve done and reverse the damage caused by you, by decentering urself and centering those youve hurt. Whenever i see the brunt being put on the people who were hurt by a hateful person to forgive them and give them a chance when THE SUBJECT wont even decentre themselves at the end of it and wont reflect or change...idk, idt its fair. If you want to change, it has to start with you decentering urself and reflection, if people dont like u for ur past actions that hurt them, thats fair. In a measured sense. Ure not owed forgiveness when uve hurt people, but you shld always reverse the harm your actions did do no matter what and work for a better world because its just the right thing to do.

    • @espeon871
      @espeon871 4 місяці тому +4

      @@new0newstbh i see ur point but i think as much as we can be kinder to people so they can escape the pipleline, its also on them to want to reflect and decenter themselves enough to even want to leave. Some people will only leave when guarenteed kindness when in reality, if someone has contributed to your oppression, and they dont want to do self reflection and change and just want the forgiveness so they can be rid of their "sins" its really just not helpful ever because have they actually learnt and changed to any measurable and valuable degree when they dont know what they did wrong, nor want to change, esp since in this case brooke still liked a trump post and when hes rising because of his racism and bigotry again more than ever...i think kindness shld be earned and reforming isnt just abt u its abt making it up to those uve hurt too and you have to be objective and decenter urself in ur journey, and you have to actually make a material change before you can get acceptance from those uve hurt before and thats fair. You dont get to contribute to a person's pain and expect instant forgiveness from them when you dont change or acknowlege why ure wrong. I think people can change, ive changed for the better too but it starts with you and ur willingness to take a step back and take ur ego out of this and see the reality objectively, you have to change and help people first, and learn.

      @@espeon871 I agree, I'm not saying she deserves complete forgiveness from the people she's hurt from her words, like I said in my comment it's up to those people to forgive or not. It's moreso that I find myself more willing to forgive, and being a bit more graceful for past behaviour. But that could come from the fact that I'm not typically going to be the target of that vitriol, nor would it really affect me if it was, due to my systemic privilege.
      I also believe you in the fact she probably hasn't truly changed all that much. As I also said, it's gotta be bad or show a lack of change, if your actions don't trump your previous idiocy. And it seems that for her that is absolutely the case.
      I just hope this never leads to a purity culture, where if you have had a bad past of behavior you get excluded from spaces you now align with. Especially because conservatives/bigots are excited to gobble the genitals of any dejected person willing to grift for them.
      My favorite motto I live by is not to forgive someone for their past mistakes, but to forgive them for their future atonements. That doesn't mean we have to accept them into our lives though
      Edit: I also agree it takes time and you should never expect pure forgiveness for just saying sorry after hurting someone in any regard.

Yeah i agree with your points abt the RW machine but i think to an extent to stop it from gobbling you up you also have to see where a person critiquing u is coming from when theyre acting in good faith so u understand ur role in this and u wont get gobbled up cuz again, u know how and why you messed up and that they kind of got a point but to someone who hasnt done the work it might send them down a harmful pipeline I agree hundred percent abt the u may dislike someone's former actions and hate them for it but you can love them for the change and the reversing of the harm. If your actions dont trump ur past foolishness, you gotta do more. Like you said.
