You're right about this being a Guitar Center exclusive. They originally sold for $800.00 but closed out at $500.00. I picked up one in very good condition many years ago for less than $300.00. I think they are now worth about $800.00 once again. I added locking tuners, changed the magnet in the bridge PU to an ALNICO 2, and reconfigured the controls for a master volume. The finish is very thin and this guitar will "relic" quite naturally in a short time.
I think it was a Guitar Center Les Paul Special. Here are the specs they listed with it: Lightweight slab single-cutaway mahogany body Nitrocellulose lacquer finish 1-piece mahogany neck 22-fret rosewood fingerboard Dot inlays '60s slim taper neck profile 24-3/4" scale length 1-11/16" nut width 490R neck and 491T ceramic bridge pickups 2 volume and 1 tone controls with 3-way toggle selector White button tuners Wraparound bridge Chrome hardware Includes gig bag
Nice little review!! Told us what it was, which was what I was looking for!! I would have liked to hear a short clip of how it sounds. I saw one of these today. Had no idea what it was other than it being loosely based on a Les Paul special. Now I know quite a bit more!! It might be for sale rather soon. It's finish is pretty "aged" Ha ha....If the shop asks a reasonable price I may well buy it. Thanks!!!
Yep it's real. Trogly did video on this one. I kind like it since I don't really use tone knobs anyway. I'd probably put on a Leo Quan Badass style bridge if I were going to keep it as a player. Nice find!
True. It didn’t take much adjustment. About the best you can hope for with bridges like this is that three to four strings intonate well and the others are close.
I miss these affordable Gibson guitars, I really dig the barely there finishes personally. Now Epiphones are more expensive than these things were.
I agree. I remember a black Special Humbucker model with a bound fretboard around this time that I think I paid around 700 for… wish I still had it.
I have one of those guitars (but w 4 knobs and a tune o matic) and it’s one of my all time favorite guitars.
It’s a nice guitar. Wish they still made affordable options like this.

I’ve also seen one other retailer who offered them, probably during close out. I think it was Sweetwater, but I’d have to Google it again to be sure.

I agree, something with intonation options.
Nice video, but it would have been good to see the amount of adjustments you had to make and how it intonated afterwards!
