If that guitar could talk you`d have to cover your kids ears i think. but that restore work. wow, masterful job. only thing i can tell, by listening, is those new frets make it sound a tad bright but, you can dial in the proper tone simple enough.
This is nearly identical to a "T" to the guitar my buddy's dad purchased for his his other son returning from the Vietnam War...........as a surprise for him.............but his son never made it home and the dad in all his grief hung the classic instrument on his son's bedroom wall. This son obviously loved music and guitar and at the time (early 70s) this was his son's dream guitar that his coalminer father saved up pennies to buy (probably $200-300 back in the day). What a sad yet moving tribute. I often thought of writing a story about this experience but Matthew here and his obvious admiration for this very classic instrument brings back positive memories to this poor father's grief. I've reflected on it many times and have reached the conclusion that it was a total waste. Young men let down by their government.
That is very true. Generally, the better playing ones get played more Than the badly playing ones. And because of that they wear and tear and get that beautiful worn patina.
For anyone watching this with some cheap guitar, fear not! Keep playing, the worse the action the better you will be when you get a nice guitar. NEVER envy another musicians guitar or feel bad because your is worth less than $100. Some of the greatest songs were written on battered acoustics.
I absolutely love the sound of P-90’s. Great for hard rock and wonderful sustain. Can be warm or a sharp thunderous overdrive. The bridge pup just growls like it has a built in Tube Screamer. I love them. I have guitars with humbuckers and PAF’s. But I always end up grabbing a light P-90 guitar.
That beautiful instrument looks as if so many people have loved it, used it and yes sometimes abused it. To hear it sing in the hand of a musician such as yourself and to see the artful hands of a craftsman that obviously loved what he did. Thank you for allowing us on your journey.
Unpopular? Maybe... Factual? Hell yeah! Juniors & Specials with P-90's have a singing quality that even Les Paul can't match... go watch Leslie West's performance from Woodstock!
@@timnewman1172 I think the original LPs had P-90s, the Gold Tops, and their sound is amazing. The PAFs were developed to sound similar but eliminate the noise. Joe B says even though he plays mostly humbuckers live, he thinks the P-90s are better, and records a lot with them. Chris Buck has a vid where he plays an authentic LP Gold Top with P-90s. And, in the “My Love” vid, you’ll see Henry McCullough playing one for that amazing solo.
5:20 - what it sounds like to hear 60+ years of being cooped up suddenly given a wide open space to breathe, stretch, and growl. What an amazing sound.
I bought a les paul when I was 20... hated it, sold it 3 years later, eventually played one 20 years later and fell in love... I guess it an age thing...

It's the player that makes the guitar talk. But it's a special treat when we find an instrument that has its own voice. That one clearly has a lot to say.
That guitar sounded good when you initially strummed it acoustically, a good sign. However, when I heard electricity running through it, Holy Smokes! Yeah, Keef or Ronnie will be calling you soon, LOL! That's a keeper, period! (Your slide outro sounded so good!)

Hey Mathew, from my perspective as a non-player who just likes seeing old things taken care of and celebrated I absolutely agree with you. I said before my feelings are like yours which is respect the history of the guitar and don't necessary try to gussy it up so it looks like it did when it was brand new. Worse to me would be to modify it from the original set up with newer high performing parts instead of the parts it was built with. I also agree that saving all the original parts where practicable is the preferred process. For me there is something about the idea that your hands are touching the same guitar as the previous owner/owners that is very compelling to me. I think it honors those previous players who obviously got a lot of use out of this classic Gibson and hopefully that guitar brought a lot of pleasure to all who heard it in all its glory. That LP straight into the Bassman is one of the best blues tones I've ever heard - super warm bass with SO much top end clarity

Umm, one of the greatest guitars I ever made is a junior clone with a smoking hot P90, and it will be with me until the day I no longer breathe.
