So true. I bought this CD back in the early 2000s…after owning the cassette in the 90s! The music is still great, blows away most of the mainstream stuff out there today.
this song is easily one of the best love songs EVER written. the themes of movement, forgiveness, hope, and trust coupled with the absolutely ASTOUNDING music are completely timeless. KOD was (and is) one of the best bands to tap into the complexities of the heart with the emotive music to match. I still thank (deity of choice) that I actually got to see them back in '92 supporting Suzanne Vega (weird!)
Remember buying this for 99p on 12" from a record store in Kennington, south London when it was released. Been listening to it ever since. One of the all-time great tunes.
A little transcribing from a podcast called The Hustle interviewing Patrick..."Julian wrote all the music. Patrick wrote the lyrics and originally called it Sedition. An agressive political song. Dan and Julian said no, we don't like that. Patrick gets furious. "How dare you tell me what to write". Patrick then goes and writes the lyrics we now hear. Patrick telling how it feels from his point of view. He says it's a vague lyric about not belonging. "Well, if people don't want to come along with me, well there you go." It's also when Julian started to layer and layer and layer guitars over and over again. Julian knew it was the hit and Patrick thought Quick as Rainbows. It's a great interview.
Scottydont66 I used to stay up to watch and record that show on VHS cassette tapes! Heh. An old friend sent me the link to this video in 2020. Time has flown.
This album is easily top5 all time. This group was so fucking incredible. I try to explain their sound as listening to dolphins swimming in space. They are just so beautiful
Patrick wrote this also... "Music was everything to us - it had to achieve an emotional or cosmic uplift and depth, or it got dropped. It was an extraordinary time in our lives. I hope you have as intense an experience listening to it as we had making it. Patrick."
Late to the party on this comment. I used to hit the beltway home from parties in '91 on WHFS, window down, cig in hand, avoiding the cop traps do 80. Amazing days.
a poor "starving student" at university, hearing "i would never want to leave this country where roads are fast and knowledge easy"...well, I was sold for life.
One of the most unappreciated bands. This is one of their best offerings. The last minute or so has some intricate and etherial chordage. It's really something special and one of my favorite alt.rock pieces.
I love the way the speeding of a car is used as a metaphor for increasing the intensity of a relationship, works very well particularly with the excited but ominous-sounding guitar work.
I was in college at the time this came out definitely consuming a lot of new order and echo and the bunnyman at that time so this really filled the gap Love this tune! Also a shout out to 4AD and all their catalog
ethereal, evocative, magic times, reminds me of lying on the roof on hot summer college nights, watching the moon, listening to this musical revelation!

When working 3rd shift back around 1990 or 1991 this always came on the radio (WHFS) as I was racing at light speed around the Wash DC beltway to get to work on time. A perfect song for that drive.
The chorus effect on the bass, the ethereal and dreamy guitar strumming plus the fall-winter feel (video helps) has that nostalgic thing going which is hard t explain, maybe thats why
So much of the 90s music encapsulated that sense of joy and melancholy.. a distinguishing characteristic of the times ..for sure. It was my youth and teacher ..

First heard this on the now long-gone Houston radio station, KLOL 101. They had a Sunday night program called Exposure, which served as a showcase for exciting new bands lining up to make their mark. I would either listen live or tape it and listen the next day. I can't tell you how many bands that exposed me to where my friends were reacting with, "who the heck is this"?
CBC stereo had a show called Nightlines with David Wisdom as host from 1984 to 1997. On all night long on Saturday night. When weather conditions were right I could pick it up pretty good across Lake Erie on 100.5 FM out of London Ontario. He played all kinds of great stuff like this. I would tape it too on cassettes and vhs. Just recently found a bunch of those old tapes. Will be fun going through them.

Amazing.
Still got my Kitchens of DistinctionCds since I was a teen and still listen to them on those very Cds! Wonderful live and generally. Wonderful singer and musicians. x So nice and wierd! to see and hear them on youtube.
Kitchens albums were exceptionally produced and engineered. This album - Strange Free World and their next - The Death Of Cool were produced by Hugh Jones. Damn he's good. Every time I listened to these albums I would hear a new sound or nuance that I never noticed before. The sound they create has a way of going to the center of my mind.
Was introduced to this group and a lot of others that I would never have known by my fellow dormmates in the early 90's. Check out 'Smiling' by them if you liked this.
I remember when they played this song on MTV years ago. I was totally enchanted with the band then, it was something so different. I've always loved this song.
Still sounds great all these years later. I first saw this video on a program called "Noise Network" late one Saturday night when I was 23 years old living in my first apartment in 1991. My favourite all time band. Thought I had lost them forever, then discovered that their sound lives on in Man Without Country. The guitar sounds are eerily similar in a brilliant way AND , like Julian, they are Welsh.
This song demolishes 99% of the modern, soulless hot garbage spewed out of the music industrial complex, and still holds up all these years later.
I agree. At least it's ours

who's listening to this during lockdown? this is a gem!
Not driving.....
Where we are as a country combined with Covid measures, I really do just want to Drive Fast...far away. This is such a brutal mental health time.
Been listening for a very long time!
Deny lockdown.
Just discovered it on the last few days. Thanks Spotify. For all the hate you get, you have helped me discover some awesome music old and new.
23 years old and still sounds as fresh as a daisy.
+Steve Torrie Doesn't seem possible it's that old. I remember hearing it on college station KRNL when it came out and had to have it ASAP.
God yes.
still sounds incredible. I prefer this to some MBV tracks

I was 16 when this album came out. Definitely a part of the soundtrack of my youth .... always loved from first listen ... bright catchy britpop
I remember watching this on MTV 120 Minutes.....back when it was MUSIC television not shit TV.

Craig Scott listen to the album. This isn’t even the best song. The whole thing has an ethereal sound.

I am calling for The Kitchens of Distinctions and The Ocean Blue to do a Mid-Atlantic duo Tour.....hit the seashore venues.

About 1991, working 3rd shift, WHFS played this song often, late at night as I was hauling ass to get to work. Loved the 1990's...

Man! I reckon they called themselves Kitchens because they knew they could cook up a fine noise!!!
Well said mate….
The 90's was a great time for music. ❤

Possibly my favourite song of all time. Just gets better every time I listen to it. Shimmering guitars that just make you want to be young again.
Shimmering. That's the word!
Such a beautiful beautiful song
Summer of 91 or 92 i heard this on MTV 120 min.

The shoegazing era... Love it!
Saw them at the Duchess of York in Leeds, fantastic band, that were and are still underrated.
We travelled over to see them there, once.

You stand here in my place
Feel the warmth upon your face
Stand back and start to smile
You now have time
You now have will
I would never want to leave this country
Where rules are fast and knowledge easy
I would never want to take you with me
Unless you're open
And trust my hand
I would never wish this much on you
When what you have might be enough
I would never want to drive that fast
Unless you're ready, willing, happy
Take me
Away from these simple feelings
I know
There's places on the other sides of here
Take me
Away from these simple feelings
I know
I'll take that car and drive there faster
I would never want to take you with me
Until you're open and grab my hand
I would never wish this much on you
Until you like to live that fast
You stand here in my place
Feel the warmth upon your face
Stand back and start to smile
You now have time
You now have will
I would never want to do that to you
To take you far and leave you stranded
I have never gone quite far enough
But you can get off whenever you like
Take me
Away from these simple feelings
I know
There's places on the other sides of here
Take me
Away from these simple feelings
I know
I'll take that car and drive there faster
I would never want to do that to you
I would never want to drive that fast

Loved the HFS reference. That station was part of a special time.
Why has this song always made me feel like crying? I don't even know if it's meant to be a sad song, but it makes me feel profoundly sad.
The chorus effect on the bass, the ethereal and dreamy guitar strumming plus the fall-winter feel (video helps) has that nostalgic thing going which is hard t explain, maybe thats why

It makes me feel the same way- especially since it reminds me of my youth in 1991 - being 18 and remembering the times and good music.
Painfully underated.
