Monoprice 5 Watt Amp at Low Volumes for Harp.... what to do?

- Yeah, this little $115 amp sounds great at moderate to high volumes for harp - good crunch and breakup, especially with a speaker swap. BUT, what about low volumes? Yeah, sounds kinda clean, dunnit? Try adding the Joyo American Sound pedal for a cheap fix, y'all!
I love amp simulators they are great.I fancy the Vox mini go .10wts and lots of effects and drum patterns
oh tim i don't give a damn about amps right now but it is a delight to see you playing
Aw, thank you Rafael. If only my family felt that way (of course, they're subjected to it about 12 hours a day, lol). Cheers!
Nice sounds. Thanks. I came at the 'break up at low volume' problem differently: Fitted an L pad attenuator before the speaker. I can crank the amp but keep the volume low. Slightly cheaper but more fettling.
I dig that little rig set-up Tim... Those Joyo American Sound pedals do come in handy and are well worth every penny!
It sounds incredible with the pedals!👍😎🎸🎶
Awsome vid...you inspired me to purchase the joyo american pedal from Amazon. Lookin forward to makin some loud noise!!! Cheers dude!
Yeah, I keep going back to that Joyo even when I don't "need" to - played a gig the other day as a guest musician, didn't want to hang out until the bitter end to break down my rig, so just plugged the Joyo straight into the PA. Sounded great, and I could pack everything I needed into a little shoulder bag - after my five tunes, I unplugged and bailed - took 30 seconds.
Cheers Tim.. that confirms i made a great purchase.
Nice vid Tim, I also watched Tim Hunters video, bought that Joyo pedal a couple years ago. Played with the joyo right into the PA with the dirty silverfish mic. Sounded great, I had to lower the drive knob to 11 o'clock. Great low budget alternative.
Yeah - I used my Joyo once at a gig straight thru the PA when my amp blew up - it sounded really good, actually. I sort of started forgetting to bring it lately, but now that I'm fooling around with this Monoprice, I bring it all the time, really starting to like the combo...
@@Tim48103 cool, I would definitely choose a good amp over the PA also. I’m impressed with monoprice 5w, sounds great
@@chriscaskenette Yeah, my first choice, if I have the room to play it in, is my Kalamazoo. But that's not always an option.... so, always good to have other tools (many, many other tools, lol).
@@Tim48103 I know this harmonica habit is pricey, lol !!
good tips tim. i'm back to finding equipment that gets me the sound without taking out a mortgage on my house
yup - sounds familiar....
Looking into finding this amplifier. I am not finding it for $125.00 to $150.00. I will continue to search.
Very good video. You have me interested.
Hm... you're right, they seem a bit more expensive atm - like $160 - but there are usually promotions and such if you watch for them: www.monoprice.com/product?p_id=611705
Thank you very much sir for posting this video.. I'm on a budget and these are right in my $$ scale,, you sound great 👍 question do you use the Joyo echo or delay peddles 😊 thanks
Hi Jeff - I use the Behringer Analog Delay pedal (also very inexpensive). Joyo's versions are probably good too tho.
@@Tim48103 your video is very helpful. and your harmonica jamming was great 👍 I will subscribe
I got to 3 minutes before realising that this is not about a Celtic harp but a harmonica. However interesting video
lol - I can play some reels if it helps?
@@Tim48103🤣
I find it annoying that people refer to a harmonica as a 'harp', which is stealing the name of another instrument. It just doesn't make sense.
👍😎👍
What kind of harp would you recommend for a learning beginner? Id love to get a little skill on harmonica!
Whelp, it depends on your budget I guess. A great, low-cost harp with little or no "technical issues" straight off the shelf is the Kongsheng TinG harp. A little less money gets you the Easttop T008k, which are also generally totally playable from the get-go, meaning you don't have to open them up to gap reeds and such, which might be daunting to a beginner. The TinG has a slightly mellower tone, the Easttop has a brassier, reedier tone. If you're not on a tight budget, the Hohner Special 20 is a great beginner's harp - they feel a little flimsy in the hand, but are universally well set up and in tune and if you can't do it on a Special 20, it's you, it's not the harp. If you go to the playlists on my channel - there's a playlist specifically dedicated to harmonica reviews - ua-cam.com/play/PLgTb0_-qY5PURj_P3iGzwgmggTt57pGmt.html&si=k1KI7_qEVz-IQc4x - probably way more info than you want or need, but you can check out sound samples and what have you at your leisure. Have fun!
@Tim48103 Thank you for taking time to reply. I bought a Lee Oscar C Major Diatonic and I had some fun with it but I wonder if there is a better option. It sounds great but I have a little trouble bending notes on it. I'm still working on my embouchure though.
@@ornerycuss5804 Lee Oskars are solid harps, also great for beginners. A wee bit less responsive than most, but not so much that you wouldn't be able to bend notes compared to, say, a generic Hohner, so keep trying - you'll get it eventually, for sure!
How would you rate this setup vs buying a stage 5? I’m torn between buying a stage 5, or going with mono and use pedals to get me there... thanks in advance for your feedback!
well..... it's complicated. The Monoprice 5 watt amp costs about $150 these days, with free shipping. The Stage 5 costs about $400 these days, with $50 shipping. If you add a Ted Weber signature alnico speaker to your Monoprice, you increase its cost by about $100 (including shipping), so now you're at $250. I did all that while I still had my Stage 5 to compare the sound to, and yeah, there's still a bit more depth to the Stage 5, and the line out is handy, but the differences are only really there when you're doing a side by side comparison - NOBODY in the bar, or the band, will be able to tell if this week you bring a Stage 5 and next week you bring a modded Stage Right. These days, for smaller gigs where I don't want people spilling beer on my Kalamazoo, I pretty much only use the Stage Right BUT I do use a Memphis Mini Boost pedal, and that combo absolutely gets me where I want to go, tone-wise (the Memphis Mini Boost is around $100). Anyway, here's another vid where I show the difference that the Weber speaker makes - I wouldn't recommend the Stage Right with the stock Celestion anymore. ua-cam.com/video/fldE1zg20uA/v-deo.html If you like to tinker, and wanna save a couple bucks, go for it. IF not, just get the Stage 5, it's a great amp, too.
@@Tim48103 thanks for such a thorough response. It sounds like the stage right speaker swap is a viable option. There’s a video of Ronnie Shellist comparing the 2, and the primary fault he shows is the stage right having bad feedback when turned up above 2, whereas the stage 5 doesn’t even when cranked higher... not to bash Ronnie, but after this video it seems as if it was done to make the signature stage 5 look better vs the stage right to influence buyers.
@@norfolknwhey4787 Well, I think they do a tube swap for the pre-amp tube (at least, maybe they swap the other one too) - I did that too, with my Monoprice, going from an AX7 to an AY7 to, uh, some other tube, I forget now which, and that does help control feedback, so I think Ronnie's vid is legit in that respect, at least when compared to a stock Monoprice.
@@Tim48103 I think I’ll go with the mono price and toy around with modding it.
Last question... I promise... when looking at the Webber Alnico speakers, is there one you’d recommend? They list them as 15W, I just want to make sure before I pull the trigger on it.
Huge thank you for all the help!
@@norfolknwhey4787 the 8 ohm "signature" AlNiCo is the one I got, and yes, it's rated at 15 watts. Have fun!
Wondering what your settings are on the Joyo American?
They're shown in the video at about 1:35.
Yeah I thought about that after I wrote and sent “duh”. Thanks for the quick reply just the same. Great harp playing. I just picked up a Monoprice. It came a couple of days ago. I’ll have to pick up an American now. Cheers -
@@HardToBeSomeone No worries! Also helpful with that Monoprice is a speaker swap - I tend to put Weber Alnicos in mine. Do the Joyo first tho and see what you think - way cheaper than a new Weber - especially used, you can get a Joyo for like 20 bucks anymore. Cheers!
You can always give it to me 😃
Lol. Nuh uh.
Drown out the guitar players? That's why I play both.
