  • In this video pro blues harp player Ronnie Shellist unboxes a new Monoprice 5W amp and compares it to it's extensively modified cousin, the Stage 5 Amp. This video is 100% original and unedited. Do yourself a favor and put on your good headphones or ear buds for this one. The contrast in tone and performance is dramatic. This video was Ronnie's idea, and he produced it himself in one take. You can buy the Ronnie Shellist signature model of the Stage 5 Amp for $329.

This is interesting, but it would have been nice to see the Monoprice with the same tubes as the Stage 5. The Stage 5 changes the preamp to a 12AY7 which is 45% the gain of a 12AX7. That would affect the tone and certainly affect the feedback.

Easily enough done changing a 12AX7 to 12AY7. Altering a tone stack and voicing is a bit harder, but not undoable, or anything your local amp tech couldn't do for you for relatively cheap. I think they changed the C5 or C6 cap for better bass response. It's a common mod for a lot of these 5 watt amps, and makes them less boxy, adding more headroom. As you said, the 12AY7 cleans up a lot of the early breakup too. A 5751 works in the same way.
I haven't gotten around to modifying my Monoprice 15 yet, but I plan on putting a Warehouse Guitar Speaker ET65 and MOD 3 spring reverb tank in it. The tone stacking and voicing in the 15 is closer to a blues Jr and doesn't need lower gain V1 valve.
If anything, an EF86 pentode tube might work better in it to give it more of a jangly VOX AC 15 tone.

He opened it so you could see it was a honest description, no bull. Bruce Collins knows how to beef up a harp amp. Great review.

I wonder if you add the Memphis little fatty pedal to the monoprice if that would make the amp playable without feedback??

This is exactly the review that a harmonica player can understand!

Whatever Rick Davis and Bruce Collins did the the Monoprice Stage Right to make the Stage5 do what it does, it is a blessing for us harp dudes. Love that Stage5.

They swapped a couple caps, Weber speaker, and AX->AY preamp tube. That’s it.

This is a useful review for me. I am search for that one amp good for guitar and harmonica. I might have to get one amp for each. Never heard a review of a guitar through a harp amp. RE: I mean tube amp because a modelling could be ok for both.

The packaged correctly... once the top is opened the box should be flipped onto the open side down and the box pulled off

I was given a Peavey Vypyr 30 in excellent condition would it make a good amp for harmonica playing?

Any amp is good for harp depending on your setup. If the amp itself doesn’t provide the tone you’re after, then there are a plethora of pedals, namely lone wolf, that can make literally any sound system produce amazing quality harp tone.

Wouldn't the speaker need to be broken in?

This video, and it’s blatant bias and motive to sell stage 5 amps, has made me lose respect for Ronnie. You’ve taken the trust the community has in you, and abused it for profits. Of course it squeals on the same settings because the preamp tube isn’t the same, and the bass response is due to the speaker swap. “I’m not trying to judge the 2”… complete BS.
I held Ronnie in high esteem until now.
