Harmonica for Beginners - 3 (kinda) easy riffs (to make you sound better than you actually are)!

  • My first and perhaps last venture into the tutorial game - three riffs that are easy to play slowly, but if you can get 'em up to speed, will make you sound like a harmonica shredding fool. Which is, of course, what we all aspire to, right? Harp on, y'all!
Tabs for the riffs: (D) = Draw; (DB) = Draw Bend; (B) = Blow
Harp is in the key of C
    Riff 1
4(D) 5(D) 4(D) 5(D) repeat until they start throwing things at you. Or perhaps until just before they start doing that.
    Riff 2
    6(B) 5(B) - 5(D) 4(D)
    5(B) 4(B) - 4(D) 3(D)
    4(B) 3(B)
    3(D) 2(D) 2(B) 1(D) 2(D) [or three blow on the last note]
    Riff 3
    4(D) 4(DB) 3(D) 4(DB) 3(D) 4(DB)
    4(D) 4(DB) 3(D) 4(DB) 3(D) 4(DB)
    4(D) 5(D) 4(D) 5(D) 4(D) 5(D)
    4(D) 4(DB) 3(D) 4(DB) 3(D) 4(DB)
4(D) 4(DB) 3(D) (2D) [or again, three blow on the last note]

As with cowbell… one can never have too much warble. Great upload Tim!

lol - I have examples of both which would lead one to believe otherwise. But thanks!

Those are good tips Tim. I always say for kids though give them a kazoo or a jaw harp because those are the gateway drugs to the Harmonica !

If I could sing, I'd never have left the kazoo in the first place.

Very nice riffs. Accessible to a rank beginner like me - at least the first two. I like how you stressed that the second and third can be transposed to different locations. Thank you for sharing.

Hi John - the third riff is easier than it sounds! But you do need to get that bend in there, so work on the bends and then give it a go. And thanks for the coffee! Cheers, mate.

    Hey there Tim.
I just saw this weird looking, trapezoidal 10-hole harmonica that JDR just launched, it's supposed to be a diatonic but with a slider to increase the octave range or something like that, it's called Trochilus I believe.
    Is that under your radar?

They do look interesting, but I haven't played one. Kinda expensive....

Great tutorial. I blew out my brand new Golden Melody Hohner, key of G within 6 months performing live the songs DOWN AND OUT BLUES (1946) and FLOUR LARD COFFEE SUGAR (1953). You can see and hear my technique on my page. I perform these songs twice a week. One of the screws won't back out the other one did with no problems. I was unable to take a look inside. I purchased a new one last week. Sounds so much better than the 6 month old. I sure hope I don' have to purchase a new one every six months with the Hohner Golden Melodies. Do you have a line on how to or who to contact at Hohner to have them look at the faulty harp? I think I put too many hours on it and it just couldn't handle what I'm throwin down. 🤣

Lucky III's Dude Ranch Outlaws! Noice! As to Hohner contacts - I have zero idea - maybe scout around their website(s) for contact us pages or something (I'm not an endorsee, so I don't have 'em on the batphone). That said, the new model GMs are kinda iffy - seems like the whole gee whiz factor of the cover plate design is wearing off, and I guess I'm not surprised that they might also have some durability issues? I gave up on mine soon after purchasing, prefer the old school, now obsolete versions, sigh. Anyway - harp on, brother!

@@Tim48103 Rad, thanks for info. I wish I could find a new OG version of the Golden Melodie.
