The Series 2 Episode "Fear Her" is currently unavailable on iPlayer, due to the controversy surrounding Huw Edwards, who played a fictional version on himself in the episode. This apparently makes it "the first and thus far only episode of the revived series to have been removed from the platform and the first episode of Doctor Who to be edited due to the serious nature of Edwards' actions" A spokesperson for the BBC said that the removal is temporary, and the episode will be returned after the scene is redubbed by a different actor

I loved Henry Jago. he admitted to Doctor Litefoot that he wasn't as brave as he pretended to be. Then he jumped up and yelled "I say! I say! Censorship to a TV series because of things that happen in the real world is just stupid, the "respect for the victims" is really disgusting, if you want to care about that, put a "minute of silence" before the show starts, and be done with it, id someone gets offended, don't watch the episode, I'll never understand why the world has to accomodate the few people that always are looking to get offended, when 99% of people just don't care.
I couldn't agree more. The other thing is what about movies or TV show that shows terrorism or beheadings months later, do they not have any respect for the victims? It's just a weird argument, for something that was planed and filmed months before.
It's actually a wonder that younger audiences stay with this series, knowing its history. And I also appreciate (and have changed) to match that. It is, hopefully, what we all do. I would say, however, that the 'Deadly Assassin' incident is not much compared to the earlier stories. Modern audiences are used to way more savage.
I've got to agree about The Empty Child. It was one of Doctor Who's creepiest episodes. Still, I'd like to see what it was originally like just to see how bad it was.
they did the same for Revelation of the Daleks for the Jimi Hendrix song 'Fire',which was the main reason the original VHS release of the story took so long@brak424242

I was a kid when Mary Whitehouse went on her crusade. I can’t remember specific incidents but she did give us a good laugh on the playground. We thought she was stupid for thinking the things she was complaining about were ‘real life’.
She saw "Filth" everywhere. So committed to furkling it out and exposing it, that she would spend hours and hours watching all the filthiest TV shows she could, notepad and pen in hand to write down the lurid details so that she didn't forget even the tiniest glimpse of a bare buttock. And by making such a fuss, she ensured TV producers would include a bit of filth to boost the ratings and thus keep her happy -oops, I mean vigilant.
The Brain of Morbius never made sense to me. Solon wanted to take off the Doctor's head, shove Morbius' brain in it, and then sew it onto the monster he created. Why all the work? Just pop the top off the Doctor's head, slide in the new brain, and Morbius would have an intact Timelord body!

To be entirely fair to Ms. Whitehouse, not that she deserves it especially, her complaints as regards Doctor Who were typically grounded in the fact that it was a show meant for a family audience. She was concerned by the scene of the Doctor being waterboarded because children might imitate it. Ludicrous though her fear may have been, she was fearful because Doctor Who was a family show. Torchwood, no doubt, would have appalled her sensitive nature, but I doubt she would have complained. Torchwood was a show for adult audiences, this was made very clear in the marketing, the timeslot after the 9pm watershed, and the contents of the show. Without being able to claim that she wished to protect children, I doubt Ms. Whitehouse would have had grounds to complain.

I wondered why The Curse of Clyde Langer wasn't on iPlayer for ages! Fun fact about another Sarah Jane Adventures episode that was censored, in original broadcast of The Empty Planet, Clyde and Rani "borrow" a pair of bikes, Clyde ends up getting the pink bike and complains that it's "a girl's bike," which has since been removed from the version on BBC iPlayer. The interesting thing about this is that Rani retorts "does it matter?" And later on in the episode Clyde cheekily takes Rani's (non-pink) bike instead; Rani is understandably upset but Clyde cockily responds "does it matter?" Thing is because the previous scene was censored the joke doesn't hit quite the same. I absolutely understand why they changed it though.

"Really??? THAT'S why Talons of Weng-Chiang was censored???" It was almost a relief when she went on to say that people also thought it was racist because I assumed that was going to be the one and only reason.
Pity the entire Jodie Whitaker saga/fiasco was not banned before broadcast....and as for the follow up Alphabet persons unveiling-the least said the better.
This was not the case in the beginning of the Jodie Whittaker years. There were several words said onscreen not fit for children's ears. They had forgotten who they were writing for.
The Talons of Wang Chung is actually a pretty good serial and would be well-liked if it weren't for the "holy crap, how did they get away with this?" racism against Asians.
Even then, if only the Doctor hadn't *gone along* with the racism in certain scenes, it probably could have been chalked up to "just showing the culture of the times". The Doctor should at least have been above all that. Adding a scene where the Doctor and Leela compare the English attitude to Chinese folks to the tensions and indoctrinated bigotry between her own tribe and the Tesh *could* have made it (potentially) ground-breaking social commenary!. But for the 1970s (and the production team involved, whom I *mostly* deeply respect), that would be too much to hope for. =:o1

Actually we got a lot of the uncensored versions, as they were run on the ABC. I'm 46, at the time I saw Daleks as a small child I was scared. Then I learned make believe, peoples ideas may not be real. People that censor have no idea what they are censoring... just rubbish talk for rubbish minds.
What about the recent episode with the disgraced newsreader Huw Edwards that has been taken off iPlayer?

It's a pity that Talons Of Weng Chiang made that terrible mistake which we know what is, because it's such a fun story! I really enjoy it.
Why did they censor anything for Australia? How do you offend an Australian? Besides insulting Paul Hogan or offering them a Fosters?
Saying spiders can't hurt you will get you censored! There's an entire episode of Peppa Pig that's been pulled in Australia for that.
@alisoncassidy3255 That's what happens in a country where every creature is trying to kill you.
Wait, there was no censoring of "Don't cremate me! Don't cremate me!". 😂
Ellie, we know you are exaggerating, but Millions of miles? Thousands of miles from the UK possibly.
The average distance between the Earth and the Moon is 384,400 km (238,855 miles). So millions of miles would put it out approximately 4 times as far away in open space. The distance between Earth and Venus and Earth and Mars is approximately 140 million miles. And those are our closest Planetary neighbors.
BTW I think Mrs Whitehouse later relocated to Pennsylvania Avenue in Washington where here neighbor was named Nixon
If only! A large part of the British population would have gladly contributed to her air fare.
I didnt know that Dr Who was broadcast in The Shire
I believe The Macra Terror is another story where the only surviving clip is the one that the ABC censored.
Nope. There are quite a few other surviving clips from that story other than the censored ones.
Good to know.
Perhaps you should explain the TV ratings in the U.K. to those of us on the other side of the pond!
I was expecting the most recent fear her. And a fix with a sontaran 😅
The Series 2 Episode "Fear Her" is currently unavailable on iPlayer, due to the controversy surrounding Huw Edwards, who played a fictional version on himself in the episode. This apparently makes it "the first and thus far only episode of the revived series to have been removed from the platform and the first episode of Doctor Who to be edited due to the serious nature of Edwards' actions"
A spokesperson for the BBC said that the removal is temporary, and the episode will be returned after the scene is redubbed by a different actor
It's a terrible episode regardless

Censorship to a TV series because of things that happen in the real world is just stupid, the "respect for the victims" is really disgusting, if you want to care about that, put a "minute of silence" before the show starts, and be done with it, id someone gets offended, don't watch the episode, I'll never understand why the world has to accomodate the few people that always are looking to get offended, when 99% of people just don't care.
I couldn't agree more. The other thing is what about movies or TV show that shows terrorism or beheadings months later, do they not have any respect for the victims? It's just a weird argument, for something that was planed and filmed months before.

Great video, a must watch for people who think that cancle culture is some kind of new phenominon, when in fact it is not.

Mary Whitehouse constantly harped on about Dr Who, along with sitcoms and Top of the Pops also drew her ire.
The Empty Child was a fantastic two parter, I remember the first time I saw that scene with the face transformation, it reminded me of T-1000.
The Deadly Assassin and the Brain of Morbius were banned for a number of years by the ABC in Australia plus the Caves of Androzani was heavily edited

Wot No An Unearthly Child? (banned from iPlayer by a dispute between the rights holder and the BBC). I'd have thought these war far more interesting/noteworthy/significant than half this list...
It wasn't only "Mission to the Unknown" that was banned in Australia, but the WHOLE of "Daleks' Master Plan" as well. Their was simply TOO much horrific content in the 12 parter, that they just gave up on trying to salvage ANY of it for broadcast.

Why?
Because a few whiny crybaby nobodies kicked up a fuss?
Nice catch mate, and yep the scene where they "borrow" some bikes is indeed cut short on iplayer currently, but i watched the original broadcast on the 1st of November 2010 so ive seen it included too :3
While it didn't involve a TV network, the VHS release of The Brain of Morbius in the US was edited down to about 1 hour.
It was everywhere else too. That’s because they simply took the omnibus edit they’d already made at the time rather than create a new one.

The bigotry is strong with this one. The Doctor will always oppose imbeciles like you.
You do now how to change channels, right? I never understood the whole *"I don't approve, so it should be removed"* attitude.
The Talons of Wang Chiang would have been 1978. Tom Baker had left the role in 1980.
This was not the case in the beginning of the Jodie Whittaker years. There were several words said onscreen not fit for children's ears. They had forgotten who they were writing for.
Said no-one with a brain ever.
