The ford 7.3 uses engine oil to open and close the fuel injectors. Also some of the diesel might have gelled a little bit. It might be a good idea to get a small generator to top off your batteries and if you get into really cold weather were your truck wont start, you can plug in your block heater to warm the engine. Probably wont need it most the time but it would be cheap insurance. Another great video and I really want a truck camper after watching your videos.
El cheapo generator from harbor freight is about $180, a 100 amp marine battery from Walmart about $100. I would carry the extra battery, fully charged. You can run your heater off of it if needed or just for cold starts. Those generators do work, but longevity is an issue. I know a buddy who had one for van camping and went through a whole bunch of them, he got the warranty extensions and just kept replacing them. A 100 watt thin solar panel can be directly connected to the battery, just monitor with a volt meter. You can easily calculate how "full" the battery is from it's voltage at rest state(several hours after charging). Keep those batteries in the 8-13.6 volt range for optimal usage. Charge controller are fairly cheap if you don't want to do math and manage them directly.
Yes the "surging" of the engine is normal on a cold start. It should clear up within a minute or so. Some cylinders may not be hot enough to ignite the diesel fuel. Add anti gel to the fuel in cold weather or buy "winter diesel" fuel. If you don't have louvers on your radiator, & it gets below 0°F I'd cover the outside of the grill with cardboard or a vinal cover to limit the cold air rushing over the motor & help the engine keep its heat up. Diesels run cold even on a hot summer day, so in the winter they need help to stay warm.
Get a snow shield for your windshield. It’s just a polyester tarp that tucks into each door when closed so you don’t have to deal with snow or ice. Mine was $4.
Freezing rain occurs when the layer of freezing air is so thin that the raindrops do not have enough time to freeze before reaching the ground. Instead, the water freezes on contact with the surface, creating a coating of ice on whatever the raindrops contact. Sleet is simply frozen raindrops and occurs when the layer of freezing air along the surface is thicker. This causes the raindrops to freeze before reaching the ground. Just an FYI :)
This vid reminded me of my husband's years in MN and SD loving his cross-country skiing. Many would wear an SEMI-EMPTY BACKPACK and attach their Snowshoes to it. A safety feature for those times when your skis might malfunction or grow legs and walk away. Even a short hike can be brutal on your feet without Snowshoes with as a Plan B. Something to maybe consider when you're out there alone since you already have Snowshoes.
It was really cool to see me running cross country alone in a cold snowstorm. It must have been scary and lonely alone, but from the viewer's perspective, the magnificent snowy scenery around it also shows the beauty of winter alone. The world covered in white snow is like a painting, and it seems to express both the solitude and beauty of winter trekking alone. This is a really touching video. We support you from Korea America. Have a good day. ❤❤❤
Yeah that's normal on a On a diesel when you cold start one. It'll loop for a while, till it gets warmed up.I'm a retired truck driver love the video's keep up the good work brother 🤜🤛
That's normal for diesel engines, let the glow plugs warm up a little before cold start, depending on how cold temperatures get, you would need a block heater
Jonathan, man you are getting REALLY, REALLY good with your videos!!! I’ve been watching/following you from the beginning and I think you’ve been doing some “studying” lately. Thanks!!!
Like Shaggy-66, I used to do a lot of winter sports like cross country skiing. I no longer can do it but enjoy watching others like you doing it. These days, I'm a fair weather camper with my wife. Can't wait for Spring to come now. In Utah, we call this type of snow Corn Snow. My 1997 Ford Diesel makes the same sound with cold starts. I wonder if it has something to do with too much fuel that needs to burn off. [flooding]
Good return video! Normal Ford 7.3 COLD start noise……get some Hot Shot diesel Extreme and throw it in the tank ever couple fill ups. Stops the fuel from gelling up in extreme cold weather or if sitting in the tank. Also since you were away for a few weeks fuel could have collected little bit of “gunk (algae believe it or not) ” in the tank. If you go away or are out of town again add some Stable-Store to the tank. This works great on auto, truck and marine diesels when storing for the winter or extended periods…… Welcome back to USA.
Good to have you back in action, Jonathan. Sounds like a great trip to SE Asia. Thanks for sharing with us. Love this video! Great to see the snow in the forest. I especially enjoyed the scenes near the stream. So beautiful. Happy camping!
Yes. It’s a cold 7.3L powerstroke. Mine did this when I had 200,000+ miles. Block heater is nice to have. Like others have said a small generator would do the trick. Not sure what the heater would pull in watts but you’d have to consider that in what generator to purchase. Anyway, great video and no video is complete without the “hot coffee whoooo sip” 😃
So that’s how it can be done, truckin on through the winter, skiing as you go. I might need to do this next winter instead of getting off the road. Need a really reliable rig!
You should consider installing a diesel heater. You'll be nice and toasty, will be able to set the temp on a digital monitor and can even tap in to your trucks fuel tank if you wanted to. Might also consider a small generator you can plug your block heater into on those cold winter mornings. Makes for a much easier diesel startup.
My wave 3 is in the same location towards the floor. Attach the Wave 3 to a tv swivel mount so you can aim it towards the back bed area. I did it with mine and keeps the truck camper nice and warm all night on the low setting... 👍
7.3’s are cold blooded the glow plug light on the dash is a dummy light the glow plugs actually stay on for 2 minutes after the light goes off. On cold mornings let the key sit in accessory for a minute after the light goes off and give the truck 1/4 throttle and as long as your glow plugs are working you’ll start right up.
Just an FYI, Jonathan heat rises naturally, so you don’t really need to redirect the heat 😂 you can circulate the heat, but heat naturally rises. That’s why they put heaters in the campers on the floor in the first place. Js bro
I loved the intro-so beautiful out there. Very much enjoy your videos in the snow and then you cook a great meal-nothing could be better esp when you take a first sip of coffee and go whooo! Lol
Hi Jonathan, what a beautiful location ! Cross country looked fun, eager to see an adventure with Tessa ! May the New Year be filled with Life’s Endless Blessings for you both ! Keep smiling !
Yeah those 7.3 will do that on a cold start. I grew up these trucks i live in south dakota I keep them plugged buring the winter, I own 5 of them not much for horse power but by far the most reliable.
A pair of rossignol BC80s or Fischer sbound98s will keep you on top of that snow and give you a far better experience. Speaking from someone who used track skis off track for years.
Crazy weather up there my Uncle lives in Oregon City and told me they were snowed in the other day. PS- lol I knew you were too tired to cook after laying down and watching that movie 🤣💕👍
Always look forward to your videos! I remember you country skiing last year. Glad you all are back and safe! See ya on the next one! Btw..for the truck, If the truck is surging when cold but runs normal when at normal op temp. You have an injector that is bad. Might need to do a Injector buzz test and cylinder contribution test are needed.
We call that rain snow mix here in the Great Lakes region. We get that a lot. We also call it heart attack snow because it's heavy. It'll collapse tents if you aren't careful.
the cold start is normal homie, your injectors are huie injectors meaning they are driven by oil pressure. when its cold the high pressure oil doesn't make it to the other side of the engine to power the injectors for a few cranks. i have a 2001 7.3
The idle surge is normal for that year diesel when it’s cold out mine and anyone I know usually surge like that I wouldn’t worry about it unless it’s surges 15 seconds or more.
Wow… breathtaking and captivating for the mind and soul…I see big things in your future… maybe nature filmmaking or something very successful.. you are naturally talented and sharing the gift of life.. nature..Thank you and God Bless you and yours🙏💕
Get yourself some hot shot’s secret stiction eliminator and add it to your oil on your next oil change . Also try their winter edt that’s for the diesel fuel. This will help with the cold weather .
Just normal just the fuel being dumped in. I have owned and work on these 7.3l psd every damn day for like 14yrs was a bus mechanic and my brother has 02 with just about 400k.
Freezing rain happens every year in Portland, and the snow rain mix is called sleet. You should also hit up the channel Truck House Life for truck questions because he has an F350 too.

Yes... And add a good anti gel fuel additive.

Loving the opening drone shots
Thanks! Stoked to have a drone back in the air 🤙

Sorry to hear you can’t do it anymore but I’m glad you’re finding enjoyment from my vids! Cheers
@@JonathanYentch thanks! Should only be temporary hopefully.

My 42 year old diesel in my Mercedes does the same thing.
Jonathan, man you are getting REALLY, REALLY good with your videos!!! I’ve been watching/following you from the beginning and I think you’ve been doing some “studying” lately. Thanks!!!

Glad you enjoy!
Awesome scenery. Thanks for taking us along!
Spectacular scenery truly God's country.
What kind of coffee are you drinking? It looks so good!
Thank you for sharing your camping trips with us, be safe and God bless.

Good suggestions on the Ford .....However the most important are your 2 Diesel Fuel Filters ...and also your Air Filter ...................

Normal for an ole 7.3 in the cold. Mine did it in cold weather also. Love your set up . Cheers
Here in the North East we call that sleet. Beautiful footage!! Stay toasty 🙂
that's what we call it here in fly over
Really cool opening shots. Love all of this video. ❄️
When I read old truck camper. I thought the old BIGFOOT shell was being used.....
Good to see you out and enjoying the snow
My first thought was, yay you’re back.
Fuel is thick, jelled up cold.
Great video! I smile at your verbal sound effects, as everyone in my family of origin does that, too, lol!
Jonathan travel and have a wonderful time doing it while you can!! Thank you so much, I cannot travel like i use to but I do want to go to Vietnam! 🌺👍

good vid, what a contrast of weather
Absolutely stunning! Makes me want to go camping in the snow ⛄️.
I use those Ryobi 4 inch fans. And buy a bigger battery so it'll run for hours and hours and hours. And that will move a lot of air.

Drew Simms vibes in the intro! I see you ;)
Cycle the key on and off a few times to bring fuel pressure up then warm the glow plugs and start
Cold air is very dense which is harder for a turbo to move at first. A diesel needs air to combust it’s fuel. This is normal.

Great video! The seclusion and quiet of the snow looks very appealing. I would love to have been there. Well done!
Startup surge might be moisture buildup in the diesel from sitting overnight in the cold? Cheers friend
