In the type of weather he’s been lately he doesn’t need his block heater he needs to learn how to start a 7.3 in the cold cycle the key keep it on for a minute or so after the wait to start light goes off give it 1/4 throttle and it will start right up.
@@packingbone1953 Are you referring to the glow plug light in the dash? From what he said i believe he has done that. One quarter throttle is going to make the engine rev way too much unless he releases the throttle after three to five seconds.
You are sooooo cute Jonathan! Lol,,I love how beautiful your camper is inside, you are so enthusiastic and sincere and you've come a long way on You Tube in such a short time...123K subscriibers in such a short time...who does that!!!! Good for you....keep the videos coming...We learn a lot from them and you are so fun to watch!!! Have a great winter! Thanks for making our days a little brighter
Old 7.3s are just like that haha. Compression ignition does that in the cold. If you have one cylinder firing off (that surge of power) you'll eventually make it started. Just gotta get all of em firing off and put it into high idle. I wouldn't worry about gelling until it gets below zero either. Diesels are just funny about that haha, they're pretty simple machines.
That’s is crazy as a mechanic I was about to say idk how cold it is but if it gets close to 0 or below he is hurt unless he has his glow plugs plugged in .. as in if his camper has a power bank hopefully he has realized he can plug it in for the warmers
I have the same exact truck, on cold mornings that’s how it goes with the 7.3. Cycle the glow plugs a few times, give it some throttle, and it should be fine.
Being a Washingtonian I must say I really love Oregon! Been to many cities in Oregon and love all ive been. Bandon is one of my favs though. Thanks for the video it was fun watching you board. 🙂
Don’t press the fuel when you’re starting it. lol. It’s normal. The piston chamber has to be hot enough to combust. That’s all it is. Glow plug cycles. Is the key. Also, replace the glow plug relay and the glow plugs if they aren’t getting hot enough. Nothing wrong with the truck at all. Just diesel is foreign to you so it’s a lil unsure feeling.
That 7.3 cold start is normal, we did plug them in for 20-30 min prior to starting when it was freezing or below. It does help it start better, but we did it more for motor longevity as it was better for the oiling. Plug it in to your generator while having your morning coffee, when you are done it will be warmed up. 👍
Before you get in the truck to leave just aim the buddy heater at the oil filter and oil pan 👍 That should help with cold starts since you don't have a engine block heater.
This retired couple from Nebraska watch ALL your videos! You remind us of our grandson! Thank you for "filming" your adventures! I must ask you. As I watch you preparing your meals, you use your utensils as an experienced young chef would. Question is, do you have culinary training? You certainly appear as if you do! Thank you again, Jonathan! On to your next adventure!
I am impressed with your cooking design. Where did you learn your skills ? Do you have a restaurant within your family history ? We have a Thai Restaurant on Exmoor in the UK named TONGDAM. My partner and I are passionate about what we do and although your episodes are packed with mishaps and mini failures, your cooking is enjoyable ...... and I dream of one day having our own camper, when we one day reduce our restaurant hours ! Keep your adventures coming 😊
That 7.3 is a great engine! It will start in the cold. It it may take a few tries. All diesels have a “lope” in the cold weather. I have the same truck cold is not an issue. Let it run a bit with the lope and then step on the gas to about 900 rpms for a bit and you’ll be fine. You can actually put a high idle switch in for those cold days. Keep up the sweet vids! 👍🏼
❤❤DANG❤❤ that was quite the ride😂❤ the photography was much like the amazing Mountaineer forestry Forest only on skis😮❤ and yes I agree that was a blast😂❤ PS I really enjoyed your to Thailand and Nam vlog🎉
👏 WOWSZA! Jonathan you were Rocking It out there! I'm seriously impressed watching you do it while hand filming it. 👏 You are definitely a young man of many talents 🙌.
Now that you've been in the truck camper for a while, what would you change or wish to have? More lithium batteries/solar? improved venting? Different layout? I've been looking at used truck campers.
Have you thought about getting a key start for your truck? It may help when the temp drops and you need to keep your truck running while in the camper 🙂 safe travels
Good morning Jonathan & hi to Tessa ! That was an awesome time & you make that look so simple ! Meal looked so delicious ! Stay safe, warm & keep smiling !
That’s normal when it’s that cold with old 7.3 I had one for many years. I would cycle my glow plugs 3-4 times then fire it up it would run normal idle for a couple minutes then go into high idle. No big deal.
You should start covering your windshield to keep the sleet and snow off it.. Also being in those cold temperatures look up Hot Shots Secret for cold weather fuel additive. I run diesel extreme and edt but they have another for the climate your in.
There is a method to starting a deep cold diesel …. Pedal on the floor and let it crank, even when you think it has caught. Don’t stop the starter until it smooths out as you slowly release the pedal from the floor.
I couldn't say it better Jonathan..... Your truck is the perfect mobile ski chalet... On a side note when you woke up sore.... just think how good soaking in a jacuzzi and a good massage would of felt.
Jonathan did you check your truck to see if you could add another battery to power your camper that way you don't have to worry about the battery that starts your truck
That's a pretty normal startup in cold weather for an older diesel. You might want to consider a diesel coolant heater, you run it for around 20 minutes before you start the engine and it runs off you battery and diesel from the tank. Makes starting much easier and works even when you don't have shore power.
@@whatitisnt. Not an electric block heater, this is a diesel coolant heater, basically like a diesel air heater but the engine coolant runs through it instead of air and it gets the coolant up to 80C or so before you even start the engine
that era of powerstroke surges in the really cold like that because it uses HEUI injectors (Hydraulic Electric Unit Injector). the low pressure oil pump that lubes the engine feeds oil to a high pressure oil pump. the high pressure oil is what actuates the fuel injectors. that surge is because the oil is cold. once it catches a bit, just give it a little throttle and it will be fine. the surge is harmless. modern "ultra low sulpher diesel fuel" thats at all the stations now does not gel up like diesel used to when that truck was new. i live where its -40 for a good chunk of winter in alberta and ive never had it gel up.
Always enjoy look forward to your content each week! I know you've been asked this several times already but I can't seem to find anyone asking this, but where did you get your bowls and plates from?
Watching this vid confirms that I’ve never had fun in my entire life
😂😂😂
Same! We gotta change

Absolutely
I agree about what you said that truck campers are way cool!!! (Better than sprinter vans-for sure!)
Dude, your videos keep me going! I hope one day I’ll be able to escape that 9-5 grind and be able to live life to the fullest. Thank you!
Stay safe. Stay warm. Enjoy. Tell Tessa hi from all of us.
What a great way to ski/snowboard…. From the sofa!! 😊 Thank you for taking us along!
Oh i miss Mt Batchelor brings back old memories. Yes cycling the key on the truck will help.
🙏🏻Thank you so much✨🌹✨What a very beautiful video ❤️How beautiful is winter🌌🌲🌨️🚚🌧️🌲What a very nice place to camp and relax 🌌🌚
If you have a generator that’s got enough wattage you could also try plugging in your block heater. It would help on those chilly mornings

i would highly recommend getting some 12v heat pads for the underside of the vehicle, the water and even fuel/oil pans can be warmed up before moving

Let your glow plugs cycle at least 4 times. 😊
Bachelor’s a great mountain! Please wear a helmet!
I was just watching Chad from living the van life yesterday and he was at mount bachelor too! It looks so nice up there.

Jonathan, I would highly recommend getting an engine block heater for the truck!
Watching from Florida......love your snowy adventures.
if you cant plug in to heat up the block. try a buddy heater underneath for a little while. get that block warmed up!
You’re keeping my spirit young !! Thanks !!

The snow looked pretty good at Mt. Bachelor.
Why did you make a hole in the bottom of the peppers?
You are a breath of fresh air!..and thanks for the snow boarding adventure! Will you be coming to Colorado?
You should get a good Lithium Jump Starter for a diesel, like the NOCO GB 150, or GBX155
Great stuff...if we could get diesel Tacomas in Canada...I'd win...but until now you hold the crown. Cheers from Vancouver Island.
Everytime i watch your videos. It makes me hungry lol.
Great majestic shots of the mountains. And thank you for not making us suffer through another person living in a van video!
Dude… those peppers look legit. Nicely done!
Just another great video. It would be nice to have such a great experience such as in the camper. The snow environment makes it beautiful.
Cold start on a diesel engine will always sound like its missing a couple of cylinders
Awesome video. Definitely inspired me to create videos like this in winter 🤙
a brittish trick drop a pint or to of petrel in tank when filling up in ice /diesel wont freeze then ..
Those old 7.3 trucks don’t like the cold. It’s best to plug them in if possible.
