Escapist is the bonus track from the 2007 Nightwish album Dark Passion Play. Its lyrics are about being mired in reality and wishing, wanting to escape - escapism. In 2005, Nightwish fired Tarja Turunen, their vocalist since 1996. This resulted in an incredible amount of attention focused on Tuomas and he calls this his "dark period", a very unhappy time. Given this, you can understand why he wrote the song "Escapist" - he was a nightingale in golden cage, locked in reality's maze.
Despite the dark tone, I love this song. I was always amazed that it was not included in the Dark Passion Play album as honestly it's possibly the best song from that period! And the best suited to Anette's voice. Tuomas wrote something incredible with this - Escapist is one of his best songs in my opinion. So it was good to make a piano version of it! Please enjoy Escapist, piano version!
