How much do those brackets on the ends of the shelf actually come out from the wall? I have a 73" closet and I'm wondering if I can just make the 72" shelf work. I'd hate to buy the 8ft or larger version just to trim it down to 73"
When I measured they came out 1 3/4” from the wall, the more of the rack is in the retainer the better. You could add an extra bracket support arm underneath on that end if worried
Thank you for this! I really want to do this for another layer of shelves for my closet. I'm just worried because no shelves actually match the length of my 68" wall. It's longer than 5 feet but shorter than 6. Not sure what to do. No kits match and I'm not findding adjustable.
Hi, glad this video helped! What you can do is go to a home improvement store and buy shelf longer than needed and they will cut it to the length you need in store :). You get to keep both pieces of shelf of course
I’ve been repairing some of these in a an apt building. Seems to be bad design with small nails (more of a mix of nail and screw). Had to use longer screws that I bought separately. The bar you show at 3:57, the end part that is curved, that curve should be in the other direction to really support the bar. Otherwise if you put to much weight on the shelf this little curve won’t hold enough. What could work better is having these bars over the shelf, instead of under. Yes, i know, it’s not very aesthetic.
Great question, can’t remember. If I did I would always start out with a smaller drill bit than needed if I felt resistance I would just use a screw to bite into the wood for securement.

Downside to this mounting system is how much dead space you end up with underneath due to the support arms.
That’s true, kind of have to maneuver things below it to fit in between the support arms
@@BStride can this project be done without the support arms?
@@nads02 not really, I wouldn’t trust the shelves weight wise if they are not used
Mine collapsed. Builder put them in drywall instead of the studs. Lasted a few years but my closet is a mess 😢
Yeah had that happen to me and had to rebuild stronger adding back wall clips and more bracket supports
@@BStride that's the plan today!
Same here. Currently installing new wall clips and additional support brackets. Old ones were worn out and painted over. Gotta love apartments.
Same thing happened to me which is why I’m here lol

You should have the extra 1 in the gap between the brackets

You'll need to buy/borrow a bolt cutter, hack saw or hand held grinder to cut the shelf to size.

Would screws hold it better than nails on all the hardware?
If you are placing into studs then screws for sure. Not on the ones with anchors, the brackets come with anchors and they hold up very well.
@@BStride yeah I just checked I think I’ll do nails worried about the weight load but should be fine. will do thanks!
How did you get the support brackets installed without bending them? Closet Maid said to ‘force’ them to bend.
You just have to bend the top a little bit - the part that fits into the groove where the shelf meets the bracket

Thanks for the input
Did you drill all the way through the wall or no?
All the way through the drywall for the anchors
Did you drill holes where the studs were in the wall?
@@big_buc2835nope drilled into drywall for the nailed in support brackets.
what size drill bit do you use for the clips.
@@pault477 start with 1/4 inch I believe
@@BStride yes - I finally picked that up in your video
Thank you, very helpful
No problem
what size drill bit did you use?
Pretty sure 1/4 inch should say on the hardware pamphlet also
Thanks for the comprehensive information.
Glad it could help
did you drill into any studs to put this up ?

Drill size?
Pretty sure 1/4 inch
What’s the weight capacity??
Think 35 lbs per linear ft
@@BStride great, thanks

Would have made more sense to attach the shelf clips to studs
Good point would make it even sturdier
did you drill into any studs to put this up ? @bstride
There are wall support anchors on the market that will hold up to 225lbs
Didn't realize the support brackets came with a little slot in the middle. I was like how the heck does this work 😂
Yeah that’s essential lol
These are absolute garbage
What happened?
