People may not like labels or genre names but I feel they are necessary when it comes to describing music.

    • @treff9226
      @treff9226 6 місяців тому

True that, Andrew! Labels can be problematic, but overall, we need them as a guide to point music fans in certain directions. That said, THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS HAIR METAL, IT IS GLAM METAL, THE TERM "HAIR METAL" IS USED TO DEMEAN AND MINIMIZE AN ENTIRE GENRE OF MUSIC, WHICH WAS INDEED KING OF MUSIC FOR A LENGTHY PERIOD OF TIME! Lastly, very unfortunate we couldn't have come up with a better word than " grunge", ridiculously pathetic term for a wide swath of killer music.

My main genres of music I focus on is Pop, Rock and Metal, but I don't like trap-pop or awful hip-hop music, I don't like black metal or death metal, and I mainly focused on Rock Music, for my main taste, however, I get people who think that they should only listen to one genre of music and not branch out on other genres, and that annoys me, because I think it's nice to mix different genres of music, I mean I like certain artists that others don't, and I don't like other artists that most people do, but I have one saying: 'If my taste in music doesn't work for you and your taste in music doesn't work for me, then I have nothing against you, nor you against me' and I always think that when I listen to music.

black sabbath is not metal in the 70's. Metal did not exist yet, and those bands amongst others like Judas Priest are looked at as the pioneers of the jangra. they were just starting to develop new shit, but the SOUND that semented it as metal appeared in aprox 1980 with british steel by priest. Now there are of course discussions about this since NWOBH was already a thing at that time, but priest got the term and sound roloing. Before that it was mere hard rock. Black Sabbath helped create many jangras like stoner and doom, groove as that is the makeup of Sabbath. Metal was not quite there, but it was the beginnings.
This can be argued, but it is the way it goes for most new inventions. Like Dream Theater kinda putt Prog Metal on the map, but we had bands like Queensryche, Watchtower, Fates Warning and more before that.
To make discussions like this less of an opinion there are peolpe like from the youtube channel Banger TV that has made the tree of metal and established where most of the bands go, and documented it, making it more solide. This was done with the help of viewers.
Now for the labeling part, I get what the owner of the store is saying, but for music this just has to be. I grew up reading metal magazines and had to buy a lot based on reviews. without the labels, I would not be able to get the kind of music I wanted, and his store has labeled many sections of music to showcase that it is in fact necessary. I have met many who have the same opinions about labels, but it does not make sense at all. If you are a person that don't care about labels, then that is ok, but that does not change the fact that the masses have already decided and agreed that we need a system to navigate the metal landscape, and therefore it exists!
Just to note that this is not only my opinions, but in general what has come to be, and is now documented. When we were younger everything was not established, so more opinions were common, but today it should be more or lees clear, and back to metal, I said the sound was the main ingredient, which it is, but also the way things were played helped coordinate the jangra. That is why things are confusing in the 70's cause it is already being done to some level, and priest and sabbath are the ones organizing it into a box, but it takes them all through the 70's to make a final product.
Glam metal I wont get into much as it is more of a term generated by people that dont really listen to metal that much and is more image describing than music relevant. we have other terms like poodle rock too that was also popular, but it mashes anything with big hair into on box, it does not seperate the actual music like GNR for instance. they are sleezy rock and roll, but the majority of glam metal bands were not sleezy. they were just radio friendly rock/metal music like Bon Jovi and could be more sleezy like faster pussycat or Poinson. Bands like the Quireboys also is in the box of glam, but they are not metal at all. rock in deed, but not hard. just very bluesy music.

    Aloha
    Brandon and Anthony ,
Such a great Conversation, great to see & hear both of you disagree on certain subjects in music. I myself was in high school in the early 1970's, we didn't use the words heavily metal, but I recall saying HARD ROCK when describing Grand Funk Railroad, Jimi Hendrix, Black Sabbath Cream, IRON BUTTERFLY, VANILLA FUDGE.
Even when Emerson Lake and Palmer came out we didn't call it Prog, we called it ROCK.
We didn't have Classic Rock, because we were living it. We did call Oldies but goodies ROCK AND ROLL: ELVIS, LITTLE RICHARD, CHUCK BERRY, JOHNNY RIVERS...
ROLLING STONES was called ROCK, so was the KINKS, even YES was called ROCK back in the early 1970's.
Don't get me wrong we had words like SOFT ROCK: James Taylor, Joni Mitchell, Carol King.
Then In 1974, I started hearing words like Fusion Jazz,
And of course LONG HAIR MUSIC as we called it back then (CLASSICAL).
As the years went buy we had more Labels, Disco, Punk, New Wave, .... on & on....
Yes, I must admit I'm still stuck in my era of music, but thats OK, as long as I don't force feed it to anyone. Why do I love this era of music you might ask...because I live it, & no one can ever take all those memories away when I listen to that music....
Thanks again Brandon for an amazing video.
Always looking forward to watching your videos, especially these with Anthony.

"Why do I love this era of music you might ask?" Noone who loves music would ever ask that. The mid 60s to mid 70s are the golden age of rock music. It just so happens that you were there. But even to those who weren't there's no arguing that that was the best time for music. The number of great pioneering bands and albums is just endless. The 80s and 90s are great decades too. But it was when the Beatles and Beach Boys released Rubber Soul/ Revolver and Pet Sounds in the mid 60s that all the rules went out the window and the flood of creativity began. That first major wave didn't begin to slow till the mid 70s.

Without music labels SiriusXm wouldn't be able to break down all the different varieties of music there is . For instance Hair Nation ch 39 identifies a specific brand of music from a specific time as you said and I agree . ALT Nation ch 36 the same. Although it's a "label" as he says and don't like it , it does help narrow down a specific type and time of music . The argument is indeed though who's in and who's out and that can be subjective . Good topic .

They tried to put GNR into the glam metal box on Welcome to the Jungle video, but by the time Sweet Child came out that make up and teased hair look was gone. They just had to compete with all the hair bands that were popular at the time. Axl in lip gloss and teased hair never felt right.

Surely liking the music is more important than the label...
If you like a band / artist/ music, then, how its labelled is irrelevant.
If you don't like it.. again the label is irrelevant.

Genres are purely rough guidlines... IMO.
What's more important is if you like the music or not...
If you like a particular music/band/artist who cares how it's classified... liking the music is enough.
If you don't like it, what its classified as becomes irrelevant...
So therefore a genre should only be used as a rough guide for marketing and targeting purposes 😁

As much as I enjoy these videos… there is zero chance record store guy will listen to CANNIBAL cause he knows what genre it is. His arguments are tainted with record store conversations.
If I came into the store and ask him where the metal section is and he says it’s all rock n roll , instantly I know he can not recommend me any album I like. If I believe for a second the guy is in it to take my money and not be a curator of his own business, it will tarnish my perception of the store. That’s a human thing.
So he can believe whatever he likes, but in reality genres come with fans and easy references.
I’d love to discuss this topic with him, it would be fascinating to me to hear how he can’t not label anything but rock.

  • @Jamie.Laszlo

There's a thin line between sleaze metal and glam metal. And Guns N Roses has aspects of both. And genres are good to at least get a bit of an idea of what a band is like. If you don't like genres, I hate to tell you...but "rock" is a genre in itself. It's just a more broad genre. If you want to get rid of genres, then just call EVERYTHING music...opera to death metal.
I also feel bad for people who don't have at least one record store near them. Thank goodness we have six downtown Columbus...so I have "record store conversations" all the time.

Genre, no genres take it or leave it. Honestly sometimes I don’t like putting artists/bands by genre but other times yes. I am not a fan of the screaming vocals like a drill sergeant. So I do want to know what genre it is in. I do love Death Metal and Black Metal vocals. I guess I need to say the genre because that is the only way to describe it. The one term I hate is har metal. Almost every artist in the 80’s had hair.

I do think that labels are important because although it's rock music, prog rock is different from alternative rock, and hard rock is different from thrash metal, etc. Labels are to help music listeners decide whether or not the album will suit their interests. @BrendonSnyder  6 місяців тому

Hey Scott, I care! And so do a lot of other people. Here’s why, genres or “labels” as you call it describe what bands sound like so that when you’re not able to hear the music you get an idea of what to expect. They’re necessary. All sounds can’t simply be called music. It’s too vague and not everyone likes every thing. Genres narrow it down so you know where to focus your interest. I prefer not to waste my time flailing in an ocean of music where 99% of it I’m not interested in. Genres and labels make it easier. That’s why I care, and that’s why you should too.

A recent big change in genre labels is Alternative. It used to be mainly a type of rock music but today, Alt is a known as a genre of pop.

Brendon & Anthony, I always love your videos together, but I wanted to add, I don't think the older generation necessarily forced people into liking certain artists.
My point was my parents pointed out that certain modern artists had success and were influenced by some of the older artists.
For example I always remember Steve Harris from Iron Maiden in an interview explaining Maiden we're heavily influenced by Thin Lizzy, so I think when you were quoting certain music fans ram certain artists down their throat, it was with good intent, and most of the things we listen to today is born from an offspring of the things they grew up with.
For example Status Quo's version of Roadhouse Blues, which was The Doors classic, but it kick started Status Quo into that kind of musical style, they we're a pop band from the 60's before that.
This has been happening so much in music over the decades, its hard to pin point where did Glam rock, Punk, Grunge, come from, its all done with different attitudes, but at the end of the day its Rock n Roll.
Even Guns n Roses we're heavily influenced by Thin Lizzy, Axle used to wear Thin Lizzy tshirts on stage.
Its difficult to say people are being dicks when I think all they are trying to do is guide fans, not hinder them.

There’s one thing that Anthony the record store owner makes a great point about it, which is why I always remind myself that even if I don’t like what that person is listening to, I always have respect for a person’s love for a certain music genre,I mean if everyone listen to and loves the same thing then the world would be a boring place. As you say Anthony, don’t be such a dick about!!!❤😊

Hey guys, great video as always, love the conversation, just a suggestion, maybe Brendon can try telling Anthony that every band is either an Emotional Rock or Emotional Metal band, I think Anthony would gladly accept it😂😂😂😂

Have to agree with Brendon on the genre thing. Rock n roll is way to broad to give anyone a close idea of what something sounds like. Unless it's actual rock n roll of course

If a piece of music inspires you or you joy enjoy listening to it, then, you don't need a label for it. Just take your inspiration and take action on it or just enjoy the vibe and appreciate that, that it made your day better!

It is still weird that music a man doesnt like the Beatles. I dont know if people are being intolernant to your taste so much as being genuinely baffled and wanting a resolution as to how its possible.
As a huge progressive rock fan i can understand why its not for everyone, but not the beatles. I cant fathom how a person could hear their albums and decide they arent a fan.😂

Pick any band you aren’t a fan of and it’s the same thing for The Beatles. Just because The Beatles and Progressive Rock strikes you doesn’t mean it strikes everyone else the same way. Not all music is for everyone. Really shouldn’t be that hard to understand. 🤷‍♂️

@@BrendonSnyderThats exactly what I just said about progressive rock. Its clearly not for everyone. Lots of people even hate it and I can see why. Its a more extreme genre.
I cant really think of any bands/artists of high critical acclaim or that were seminal acts that I dont like. There are some I have never quite given a chance but I dont say I dont like them, just that I have yet to give them a proper chance.

I always thought that Guns N Roses were grunge. They even were on tour with Nirvana at one time. GNR dressed like grunge rockers, they didn't have that hair metal or glam rock music to me. I never thought they were like a Bon Jovi, or Motley Crue. If Mother Love Bone can be grunge rock, so can GNR be then.

    • @BrendonSnyder
      @BrendonSnyder  6 місяців тому

No you’re so far off with that one. GNR were never grunge. Genres are not about a look. Just because someone wears a flannel shirt doesn’t make them Grunge. Just like teasing the hair and wearing makeup doesn’t make someone Glam Metal. It’s a sound. GNR were most definitely Glam Metal but quickly dropped the look and moved more in the Hard Rock vein for the Use Your Illusion albums. But no, never Grunge. They also didn’t tour with Nirvana. You’re thinking of when GNR had SoundGarden open for them on the Use Your Illusion tour. But just because your opening band is Grunge doesn’t mean GNR was Grunge.

Glad was a wide net cast over lots of different rock and metal sounds. But it was all feel good escapism, sex, drugs, rock n roll lifestyle lyrics. The 80’s sound and content was a very different time about living it up and having good time. That’s part of what the whole Glam Metal sound/style was about. But it was definitely more than just the look. I’ve made a video about what defines Glam Metal, see link ua-cam.com/video/HzVg4h5no00/v-deo.htmlsi=DEB1G-uYkd0-k2m6
