I was drawn to music from a young age. There was something magical about it…I could use my imagination and disappear into the albums. I remember looking through my parents’ record collection and exploring the different sounds and cover art. I couldn’t stop listening…and I still can’t. It’s who I am. There is NO day without music. It was a gradual shift. From an early age up to 8 I think I just listened to the radio and stuff my parents listened to - mainly 70s up to 90s Rock, Pop, Disco, Folk, Hard Rock, Prog. There were three important steps: 1. Discovering Metallica at age 9 2. Discovering the Rolling Stones and Beatles at age 10/11 3. Discovering Jethro Tull and finally Iron Maiden. From there on I got into Sabbath, Priest and a myriad of Metal subgenres, got King Crimson for my birthday and went on to Pink Floyd, discovering Folk, Blues, Bob Dylan and so forth. Age 12-15 was just a joyful time, with 16 I got hugely into Springsteen and also underground metal, at 17/18 I branched out to Pop, Soul, Fusion, Shoegaze, Oldschool HipHop, Ambient, Synthwave, Berlin School, Noise and so on.
My Dad always played his records for us. I loved the way he cleaned all his 45's before playing them. This was in the late 60's. When I turned 12 in the 70's I started my own collection with the Beatles Red and Blue which I still have.. Thank you Dad for the Love of Music.
Definitely my older brothers. Zeppelin, Stones, Doors, Beatles were the big four. My first cassettes were Stones - Hot Rocks 64-71, Billy Squier - Don’t Say No, The WHO - Who are you, and Zeppelin 2. Eddie and the Cruisers movie and soundtrack were also huge as well as the Blues Brothers 🤘🎸😎
My parents were huge music fans so music was always on in the background and in the car. It varied from The Beatles, Abba, Status Quo, The Kinks, Roy Orbison, as a kid I just lapped it up. And eventually found my music. Originally it was Duran Duran, Adam and the Ants, Nik Kershaw, all the 80's kind of stuff. Then I bought Now 3 or 5, can't remember which, but on this collection it had Whitesnake - Here I Go Again, Kiss - Crazy Nights and a Billy Idol song. These 3 songs were played more than any other. A friend then introduced me to Van Halen, Whitensake, Dio and Judas Priest, the rest is history! The first rock album I ever bought, 1987 by Whitesnake! Great topic!
I was 5 years old when Appetite for Destruction came out. Obviously being that young I had never really listened to music much but I remember hearing Welcome To The Jungle and something inside of me was hooked. I asked my mom to buy it for me and she did, Its been all downhill ever since haha. Appetite is still my favorite record of all time 36 years later
Music was always there for me. Music prob saved my life. Instead of turning to drugs and alcohol I had music. Music eased my pain and anger. Music is still there for me every day.
I think the first thing I heard after coming out of the womb (other than my parents' voices) was probably "The Lonely Bull" by Herb Alpert & The Tijuana Brass. That was in 1966. It snowballed from there. There was never anything more important than music from that moment on. My parents made me love Herb Alpert, Nat King Cole, The Platters, Floyd Cramer and Van Cliburn. My oldest brother turned me on to CCR, Iron Butterfly and The Beatles. My youngest brother (four years older than me) got me into ELP, Yes, Jethro Tull, Black Sabbath and Judas Priest.
Great video topic, Brendan -- it's always fun to reminisce about how one first got into music! I remember when I was a young child, I had a portable record player for kids -- the kind that came in a little case. It didn't play LPs, but it played smaller sizes. I listened to that and a cassette player that I played storybook tapes on of fairy tales. My grandparents had a huge console televison with a built-in record player where I would listen to LPs of Disney and movie soundtracks. Then as I got older and started buying my own records and tapes, I would search for songs I liked on the radio and for other artists that didn't get played on the radio. One of the genres I listen to a lot is country and I've been disappointed with a lot of the music nowadays compared to what I used to hear. So, thanks to all of the awesome deals I've found on used CDs, I've managed to build up a collection of about 100 country albums with recordings from the 1930s to the early 2000s with a heavy emphasis on music from about 1987 to 1998. Thanks for another fun video and trip down memory lane!
My Neighbor was washing his car and playing the radio so i went over and asked him what radio station he was listening to he told me 102.5 FM WDVE in Pittsburgh , Pennsylvania Been a music fan since 1983.
I remember coming home from kindergarten and I listen to Blood, Sweat & Tears “Spinning Wheel” then also listening to Casey Kasem’s “American Top 40” every Sunday Morning. Casey’s voice still brings back many many Great Memories.
Listened to American Top 40, with Casey Kasem, religiously, for about 3 years(1974-76). Had to make sure you were up before 9 AM, and didn't sleep in. Loved it!
i grew up in a musical family. somebody was always spinning something. be it country from my brother or rock/metal from my parents. but also appetite by GNR, metallica's the black album, american idiot by green day, and ace of spades by motorhead were all important albums that got me into music originally. what's kept me into it is always having a new (at least to me) band to check out and go down the rabbit hole on.
I've always loved music. I'm almost ashamed to say it was the Patridge Family when I was a kid .. my aunt took me to see David Cassidy. My music tastes did improve😂. My dad always played the Stones ,Bob Seger, Steppenwolf, Ccr, Elvis etc. He brought home the 45 of Peter Frampton "Baby I Love Your Way" which I own to this day .My teenage years and early 20's were Bon Jovi,Def Leppard,Cinderella, Skid Row....lots of great concerts then. I have about 9,000 cds. Like a little bit of everything. Just love music . Enjoy the discussions you and Anthony have....cool guys.
Music was always being played in my house from my birth in 1960 to when I got my first regular job in 1979 and started buying my own music and discovering new and old bands and artists . With out question, the biggest influence was a $5 transistor radio I purchased in circa 1968 . Now I was able to listen to the radio station I wanted to, when and where I wanted . And now ( 56 years later) my iPhone has become my transistor radio and through streaming I am the radio stations 😺
I got into music from my mom initially, steppen wolf, alice cooper, hair the sound track. then as i grew older i listened to the radio all the time (there were only 3 tv stations back then). but then music started to find me in ways of college radio, friends, and MTV (when it was MTV). I've gone from rock to punk to techno to industrial and back again. I became a DJ because of my love for music and have a nice collection which i wouldn't trade for the world. now I'm back to collecting vinyl and going to concerts. Been lucky to see many bands and meet the bands. i hope to changed peoples worlds by playing music they normally wouldn't have heard at all. and they can like it or hate it, but at least they heard it once.
I got a Beatles cassette for my 5th birthday. As soon as I heard those opening chords to Hard Day's Night I was hooked and wanted to hear more. Also, listening to the radio in my parents car also influenced me greatly hearing all these different types of music. My mom had a killer late 80s hard rock cassette collection. I discovered a ton of bands from that as well.
My sister's friend babysat me once and played Aerosmith "Get A Grip". I was hooked. That led to me getting every single Aerosmith cassette I could find. I was only like 6 or 7, so my parents bought them. ha. But it just went on from there until I was into grunge thanks to my sister (sorry, Anthony), nu-metal thanks to my best friend, and then on my own I got into metalcore, hardcore, emo, pop-punk, synthpop, rap, big beat, folk, jazz vocal, country, etc. Just a weird, fun, long process that continues to this day.
MY dad got me into music back in the '50's he brought me to a pawn shop and bought me what they called back in the day a box guitar for what I think cost $5. I could vividly remember my neighbor who was on his porch saying to me who are you going to be the next Elvis. Soon after that we went to a guitar shop which was located in Belleville NJ Mascara Music and my Dad bought me a Fender Music Master and case which cost $110 and a Fender Princeton tube Amp. which cost $60. My cousin who taught me how to play whose band was voted the best band in N.J. at that time afterwards was produced by Eddie Kramer who co-produced everyone of Jimi Hendrix recordings. Another band member whose name was Denis Ferranti who worked with John Lennon amongst many famous musicians and bands also in my cousins band was the bass player named Tim Bogart who played with Jeff Beck in a band called Cactus i could go on and on. One more thing my cousin who taught me now owns for many years TOAC the old appliance company which refurbishes old antique stoves and at another time had a collection of 27 Hammond Organs which had to be repaired for churches and rock bands that's all for now. .
The first 45 I bought was Elvis’ Don’t Be Cruel/Hound Dog from Woolworth in Toledo in 1961, the first album I purchased was the Beach Boys “Surfer Girl” in 63, I’m 70 years old now and I still buy new music monthly. Seeing Elvis on TV is probably what got me into music
Well I’m almost 60. So my first memories would be when I was 7-8 years old (1972-73) my mom would listen to the radio in the car. I would hear a few songs that I liked and she would sing to. Also she had an old console stereo with records. I know she would let me listen to them. She had the Beatles, Stones, Elton John, and Sonny and Cher. Funny now I like the Stones, and Elton John but really not into the Beatles. I remember in 74 hearing on the radio Bennie and The Jets, and Crocodile Rock and in 75 IslandGirl, Philadelphia Freedom, and Pinball Wizard all from Elton John. So my mom bought me Elton John Don’t Shoot I’m only The Piano Player, and Rock of The Westies. Then in early 76 a guy brought to school a tour book of a concert he went to from some band in makeup called KI⚡️⚡️! Well needless to say that was my beginning of being a KISS fan I got Alive!, Dressed To Kill , and Destroyer from my mom, and Rock N Roll Over from my dad for Christmas in 76. Which lead to where I am today 😛😁🤘🏻
Both of my parents loved music and they were super young parents. So I grew up listening to classic rock. My dad loved 70s AOR (Steely Dan, Doobies, Fleetwood Mac, The Eagles) and my mom loved funk and rock n roll (Stones, Earth Wind and Fire, Jimi Hendrix). So, music was part of my life from a very early age. Also, my dad was a bit of a jock and I was not, so music is the one area we could connect. At some point my best friend and I wanted to play guitar. I was into the Stones and AC/DC (he was too, but he was more motivated by The Duke's of Hazzard them song). My dad had a huge record collection that I would dive into. Then, as a teen, I started my own collection.
MTV was an entry point into music back in the 80's. The Police greatest hits cassette that came out in 1986 really had an effect on my 15 year old self, I thougth that album was mind blowing, and it kind of still is. That was my first purchase of music, now I'm at the 2000 album mark.
This was a good episode with you and Anthony. I like how he emphasizes his view that what he likes is what he likes, because it means something to him, and it doesn't matter what others may like or try to sway him towards. That was much my own attitude and still is. I think a lot of young kids just listen to music because it's what their friends like, or because they feel they have to listen to to fit in. When I was in high school, if you were a guy, you had to like Alice Cooper, Black Sabbath, and Led Zeppelin, and to some extent Deep Purple, if you wanted to be accepted by the "cool crowd." Luckily, I liked all of those bands, with Purple being my favourite. Now Brendon, I sent you a music compilation I made up called "The 38 Abums That Changed My Life." That's only about half of them, but a lot of the most important ones. In 1966 I was 10 years old, so my experience was much different than yours or Anthony's, maybe, but if you look through that, you'll have a very good idea of what got me into music. When I was a teen, learning the guitar and writing my own songs became a big focus for me, so that really was a big change for me. By the time I was in my early 20's I was playing bars on a regular basis, something I still do to this day, going on 68 this summer. You know, music is magic, and it can change your world and your life. Those of us who can see that and understand that, I think we are special. We see and hear and experience something a lot of other people can't do. Music is a gift in this world, and we should make the best of it, as much as we can.

I was brought up listening to the Beatles, stones, the who ect then my sister did me a copy of bat out of hell on cassette with deadringer on the other side which made me feel moved then seeing GN’R at the ritz on tv in 88 made me get out and buy AFD. Wow what a fun topic. I never really thought about how I got into music before, it's always been a big part of my life. I had fun trying to remember my first musical influences. I don't remember a time in my life where there wasn't some type of music. Both my grandparents play the organ and the piano ,we sang Christmas carols when I was small. One aunt introduced me to Johnny Cash. Another aunt introduced me to the Beatles. But it was my mom that really influenced my musical tastes. As an eight year old I paged though her record collection looking at these wonderful album covers and being intrigued. She had such a variety of music. Martin Denny lounge music, The Boston Pops orchestra, Bach, Beethoven, Sounds of Italy. Tom Jones, The big bands, Herb Albert and the Tijuana Brass, Dizzy Gillespie and so much more. We would dance and sing together around the house. My very first record I owned myself was The sounds of Hawaii. I traded a makeup kit to a girlfriend for it when I was Ten. When I was a teenager my mom drove me to k-mart to purchase my first record with my own money. The Yellow Submarine. I always thought of music as your best friend, It's always there for you to help you get through life's ups and downs. Thanks for taking me down memory lane.

Hmmm? Our older cousin gave us a bunch of old 45’s. We played them out in our garage. But my mom always had the radio on in the kitchen as well. My first record ( which I got C.O.D- look it up kids) was Silly Songs! Lol My first 8-track was Beach Boys Spirit of America. Than Kiss happened in my early adolescence. For some reason, I was listening to The Clash in 6th grade. And Really just locked into the energy. And then in Jr. High, my friend invited me to go with him and his dad to Ted Nugent at the Boston Garden. I was into it. And when Elvis died, i jumped into rockabilly and blues... of which the Clash was doing. I've been a music addict from early on.
For as long as I can remember I always remember music being in my life. My dad is a big music fan and was a huge Rolling Stones and classic rock fan, so as a kid there was always the stones or some kind of music playing in the car. We also had Much Music here in Canada that played a lot of different music that I got exposed to. I also had older cousins who were into 90s rock alternative/ so-cal 90s punk so I got into those bands, Green Day being the first one. Then when nu-metal became popular I got really into that and had older cousins once again steer me in the direction of hard rock/metal and told me which bands to check out (I was and still am a big fan of all the older Roadrunner Records bands). Today I’m still a big metal/punk fan.

My music taste has developed on its own terms with many external influences (father, older brother, radio, MTV, reading, UA-cam). I am constanting buying and listening to music. I seem to have a very different experience with music than everyone else. I hated all music until I was almost 19. My parents aren't music people, so they didn't bother introducing me to any artists they liked because they didn't really like any. So I grew up listening to the shit they played on the radio, like Taylor Swift, Harry Styles, Coldplay, etc. and of course I hated it. I never understood why people blasted music in their cars or wore T shirts with their favorite bands or artists on them. I lived my entire childhood without ever hearing a single song I could connect with, relate to, or even like in general. I also got my phone very late compared to all the other kids, so I didn't have access to the internet for most of my life. But one day, my phone recommend a Marilyn Manson video, and I fucking loved it. It was the best thing I'd ever heard, and it opened my eyes to a world I didn't even know existed. I was hooked. This new love for 90s music led me to discover other artists and bands I have now come to love, such as Nine Inch Nails, Foo Fighters, Nirvana, Eminem, and even some 70s rock like David Bowie and KISS. I know Marilyn Manson is very controversial right now, but discovering him was the best thing that ever happened go me. I bought headphones for the first time, bought my first CD, and picked up a few autobiographys of artists I idolize. I'm discovering new artists and songs every day, and not a day goes by that I don't listen to music. That was my journey, and it's far from over.
I got into Kiss as the older Kid on my street was the first to bring Kiss into my world. When i heard it, i was hooked. Then another friends older brother used to crank Boston loud as hell from his basement bedroom. So it was Kiss and Boston that got me into my love of music.

Uriah Heep.. n Bread.. then got my first cassette frm my older cousin.. it was Blues Brothers’ briefcase full of blues album & a compilation of Lynyrd Skynyrd… bought my first cassette tape when i was 12.. it was Michael Schenker Group’s built to destroy.. n the rest is history… btw my first bought cd was Metallica’s master of puppets… \m/
For me, it was John Lennon's murder in Dec. 1980. I watched the reaction of the news anchors the day after. And I thought to myself, "This guy must have been really special". So, I asked my parents about John and The Beatles. And sure enough, they had two Beatles albums, "Beatlemania! With The Beatles" and "Beatles' '65". I played them a lot that Dec. And then in Jan. 1981, I bought my first rock album, "The Beatles 1967 - 1970". And it blew me away. And that led to "The Beatles 1962 - 1966" and several more Beatles albums that year. I also got into and bought albums by artists like The Rolling Stones, Elton John, The Beach Boys and Buddy Holly. By 1982, I had all The Beatles albums and was moving on to the solo Beatle works. In early 1983, I started listening to the radio, buying magazines, watching music videos and awards shows, and really getting immersed in the current music scene. But, it all started with John's murder. Before that, I only had or heard children's albums and liked a few film scores, like "Star Wars".
I think it must have been because music made me feel, and it still can do. Looking back, melancholy in music has always created some strong longing in me. One of the most powerful "rituals" that I know is listening to the right music as the sun sets or night falls.
What was cool for me at the age of Five I fell in love with music because my parents didn't care what I listen to. But the radio was on a lot and that's how I fell in love with songs and music. Meat Loaf was the musician I heard on the radio in 1994 right there it started. Bat out of Hell 2 Album I still love that album today. It's been crazy fun journey that I will always love. I love discovering music that was always there and didn't know that it was there the whole time. And there's music and songs that I like and I can't explain why I just do. That's fun for me. Sometimes when people find out some music I like I get odd looks that's so funny to me. I even ask myself why this song and I can't explain it. That's okay and it makes it fun.
I had seen iron maiden gnr and helloween shirts all around my hometown so bought a iron maiden killers tape then gnr appetite lp that's where I was hooked lol
I was drawn into music by getting a Walkman. I realized that wandering through the streets of my hometown is much cooler with listening to music. First cassette: Michael Jackson "Thriller", first CD: Redd Kross "Phaseshifter". Collecting music since then with a short break in the beginning of streaming - like so many. :(
Sorry Brandon, but I grew up in LA and was fortunate enough to attend a few of G&R's shows back in late 85/early 86 and there was nothing glam about them. And this is coming from somebody who loved the glam scene back then.
@@BrendonSnyder In my opinion (and that is all it is), GNR are an Aerosmith/Rolling Stones influenced band with a much harder/punkier edge. I’ve never thought of them as either glam or metal.

I was into music from when I was younger, but I was a beggar for listening to Buddy Holly and Elvis Presley as a kid, as it was music I was brought up on with ABBA, Chris Rea, The Beatles, Lionel Richie, Meat Loaf, Roy Orbison, The Clash and all that, but when I was growing up, I was listening to different things and I was loving different music from different artists from pop, rock and metal music and still do to this day from different artists and I love to have an eclectic taste in music and not an elitists taste.

My uncle was in a band in the 70’s and 80’s. So I was exposed to his music. Kiss was the pilot light. But the first 45 I bought with my own money was Sweet ‘Fox On The Run’ Rush Exit Stage Left / Def Leppard Pyromania / and Van Halen Fair Warning made me a maniac for music. The IV was set, and the drug was injested. I was hooked for life.

My friends inflenced me very much. My dad was into easy listening like Perry Como The Andrew Sisters. im into Prog mainly, some metal, rock and jazz. Not Black metal or anything with a Honey Monster vocal except Opeth.
Now that makes me wonder why did my dad buy ME a 'music centre' (one of of those all in one things witht he wood vinyl wrap.) He didn't buy any audio equipment for my younger brother. That was such a huge thing to buy me at around 10 years old. Really got me into music. He brought himself a nice Akai tower around the same time. I must have shown some interest in music I guess.

Greatest Hits people are easy to qualify, they are what I call "Fair Weather Fans." Those are the people who move units vs hardcore fans, the people in the know. I used to be a "completest" where I had to have all the albums (I never heard about people who collected every variation of albums or singles until the Internet was around) and it was financially difficult to do. Now, not so much. I basically buy what makes me happy. Just because I like an artist/group doesn't mean everything is a gem, there's filler in there too. Music is cool because it does appeal to both introverts and extroverts. You can listen to it in your bedroom (kid/teen) or living room (adult) either way as well as in a car. Music got into me when I was about 7. That said I always liked watching MTV, Nickelodeon (they had a music show) and anything music back in the early 80s. I ALWAYS thought guitars were cool and musicians were the coolest. It got into me then I got into it.
What got me into music? Mostly what was on the stereo when I was younger. My dad played Billy Joel, Elton John, Gerry Rafferty, Beach Boys, Genesis, Phil Collins. And then myself obviously: I got into a-ha,Pet Shop Boys and a whole bunch of other music. I’m very open with my music selections. Any questions?

uufff I absorbed so much music since I was a kid.. the music my brothers used to listen to, what my parents liked, I took something from everybody. When I grew up and when I was 13/14 rock and blues and some of the pop stuff was my thing.. the beatles, creedence, clapton, bb king, bee gees... later on in school my friends at that time introduced me to metal.. the big names.. iron maiden, metallica, and back then nu metal was a big deal.. but I didn't like that much..yet!. I was very into pop-punk like green day... Then yeeeears later... I got deeper into metal.. one friend introduced me to power metal, another one to death and black, and the internet helped me to find many many bands. I can't stick to just one music style or genre.. lIfe is so big, we have so many emotions and feelings, we can't stick to one sound.. I go from lady gaga to cannibal corpse in a second, maybe one week I'm full on metalhead and next one I want to listen to blues all the time or reggae or edm/techno. Music is my place to feel pure freedom and the best way to connect with myself, and that was a hard lesson to learn.. it took me a while to accept the diversity of music I like, and stop trying to fit in. Music is very reflective, introspective, it's a huge help to know oneself, to accept yourself, it's not an escape like many artists said... it's very therapeutic.

Definitely my older brothers. Zeppelin, Stones, Doors, Beatles were the big four. My first cassettes were Stones - Hot Rocks 64-71, Billy Squier - Don’t Say No, The WHO - Who are you, and Zeppelin 2. Eddie and the Cruisers movie and soundtrack were also huge as well as the Blues Brothers 🤘🎸😎

I’d have to say it was when I was two and my sister’s introduced me to CCR I could sing bad Moon rising at two word for word.
My parents were huge music fans so music was always on in the background and in the car. It varied from The Beatles, Abba, Status Quo, The Kinks, Roy Orbison, as a kid I just lapped it up. And eventually found my music. Originally it was Duran Duran, Adam and the Ants, Nik Kershaw, all the 80's kind of stuff. Then I bought Now 3 or 5, can't remember which, but on this collection it had Whitesnake - Here I Go Again, Kiss - Crazy Nights and a Billy Idol song. These 3 songs were played more than any other. A friend then introduced me to Van Halen, Whitensake, Dio and Judas Priest, the rest is history! The first rock album I ever bought, 1987 by Whitesnake! Great topic!
I was 5 years old when Appetite for Destruction came out. Obviously being that young I had never really listened to music much but I remember hearing Welcome To The Jungle and something inside of me was hooked. I asked my mom to buy it for me and she did, Its been all downhill ever since haha. Appetite is still my favorite record of all time 36 years later
Music was always there for me. Music prob saved my life. Instead of turning to drugs and alcohol I had music. Music eased my pain and anger. Music is still there for me every day.
I think the first thing I heard after coming out of the womb (other than my parents' voices) was probably "The Lonely Bull" by Herb Alpert & The Tijuana Brass. That was in 1966. It snowballed from there. There was never anything more important than music from that moment on. My parents made me love Herb Alpert, Nat King Cole, The Platters, Floyd Cramer and Van Cliburn. My oldest brother turned me on to CCR, Iron Butterfly and The Beatles. My youngest brother (four years older than me) got me into ELP, Yes, Jethro Tull, Black Sabbath and Judas Priest.
Great video topic, Brendan -- it's always fun to reminisce about how one first got into music! I remember when I was a young child, I had a portable record player for kids -- the kind that came in a little case. It didn't play LPs, but it played smaller sizes. I listened to that and a cassette player that I played storybook tapes on of fairy tales. My grandparents had a huge console televison with a built-in record player where I would listen to LPs of Disney and movie soundtracks. Then as I got older and started buying my own records and tapes, I would search for songs I liked on the radio and for other artists that didn't get played on the radio. One of the genres I listen to a lot is country and I've been disappointed with a lot of the music nowadays compared to what I used to hear. So, thanks to all of the awesome deals I've found on used CDs, I've managed to build up a collection of about 100 country albums with recordings from the 1930s to the early 2000s with a heavy emphasis on music from about 1987 to 1998. Thanks for another fun video and trip down memory lane!
My Neighbor was washing his car and playing the radio so i went over and asked him what radio station he was listening to he told me 102.5 FM WDVE in Pittsburgh , Pennsylvania Been a music fan since 1983.
I remember coming home from kindergarten and I listen to Blood, Sweat & Tears “Spinning Wheel” then also listening to Casey Kasem’s “American Top 40” every Sunday Morning. Casey’s voice still brings back many many Great Memories.
Listened to American Top 40, with Casey Kasem, religiously, for about 3 years(1974-76). Had to make sure you were up before 9 AM, and didn't sleep in. Loved it!
i grew up in a musical family. somebody was always spinning something. be it country from my brother or rock/metal from my parents.
but also appetite by GNR, metallica's the black album, american idiot by green day, and ace of spades by motorhead were all important albums that got me into music originally.
what's kept me into it is always having a new (at least to me) band to check out and go down the rabbit hole on.
I've always loved music. I'm almost ashamed to say it was the Patridge Family when I was a kid .. my aunt took me to see David Cassidy. My music tastes did improve😂. My dad always played the Stones ,Bob Seger, Steppenwolf, Ccr, Elvis etc. He brought home the 45 of Peter Frampton "Baby I Love Your Way" which I own to this day .My teenage years and early 20's were Bon Jovi,Def Leppard,Cinderella, Skid Row....lots of great concerts then. I have about 9,000 cds. Like a little bit of everything. Just love music . Enjoy the discussions you and Anthony have....cool guys.
Music was always being played in my house from my birth in 1960 to when I got my first regular job in 1979 and started buying my own music and discovering new and old bands and artists . With out question, the biggest influence was a $5 transistor radio I purchased in circa 1968 . Now I was able to listen to the radio station I wanted to, when and where I wanted . And now ( 56 years later) my iPhone has become my transistor radio and through streaming I am the radio stations 😺
I got into music from my mom initially, steppen wolf, alice cooper, hair the sound track. then as i grew older i listened to the radio all the time (there were only 3 tv stations back then). but then music started to find me in ways of college radio, friends, and MTV (when it was MTV). I've gone from rock to punk to techno to industrial and back again. I became a DJ because of my love for music and have a nice collection which i wouldn't trade for the world. now I'm back to collecting vinyl and going to concerts. Been lucky to see many bands and meet the bands. i hope to changed peoples worlds by playing music they normally wouldn't have heard at all. and they can like it or hate it, but at least they heard it once.
I got a Beatles cassette for my 5th birthday. As soon as I heard those opening chords to Hard Day's Night I was hooked and wanted to hear more. Also, listening to the radio in my parents car also influenced me greatly hearing all these different types of music. My mom had a killer late 80s hard rock cassette collection. I discovered a ton of bands from that as well.
My sister's friend babysat me once and played Aerosmith "Get A Grip". I was hooked. That led to me getting every single Aerosmith cassette I could find. I was only like 6 or 7, so my parents bought them. ha. But it just went on from there until I was into grunge thanks to my sister (sorry, Anthony), nu-metal thanks to my best friend, and then on my own I got into metalcore, hardcore, emo, pop-punk, synthpop, rap, big beat, folk, jazz vocal, country, etc. Just a weird, fun, long process that continues to this day.
MY dad got me into music back in the '50's he brought me to a pawn shop and bought me what they called back in the day a box guitar for what I think cost $5. I could vividly remember my neighbor who was on his porch saying to me who are you going to be the next Elvis. Soon after that we went to a guitar shop which was located in Belleville NJ Mascara Music and my Dad bought me a Fender Music Master and case which cost $110 and a Fender Princeton tube Amp. which cost $60. My cousin who taught me how to play whose band was voted the best band in N.J. at that time afterwards was produced by Eddie Kramer who co-produced everyone of Jimi Hendrix recordings. Another band member whose name was Denis Ferranti who worked with John Lennon amongst many famous musicians and bands also in my cousins band was the bass player named Tim Bogart who played with Jeff Beck in a band called Cactus i could go on and on. One more thing my cousin who taught me now owns for many years TOAC the old appliance company which refurbishes old antique stoves and at another time had a collection of 27 Hammond Organs which had to be repaired for churches and rock bands that's all for now.

The first 45 I bought was Elvis’ Don’t Be Cruel/Hound Dog from Woolworth in Toledo in 1961, the first album I purchased was the Beach Boys “Surfer Girl” in 63, I’m 70 years old now and I still buy new music monthly. Seeing Elvis on TV is probably what got me into music
Well I’m almost 60. So my first memories would be when I was 7-8 years old (1972-73) my mom would listen to the radio in the car. I would hear a few songs that I liked and she would sing to. Also she had an old console stereo with records. I know she would let me listen to them. She had the Beatles, Stones, Elton John, and Sonny and Cher. Funny now I like the Stones, and Elton John but really not into the Beatles. I remember in 74 hearing on the radio Bennie and The Jets, and Crocodile Rock and in 75 IslandGirl, Philadelphia Freedom, and Pinball Wizard all from Elton John. So my mom bought me Elton John Don’t Shoot I’m only The Piano Player, and Rock of The Westies. Then in early 76 a guy brought to school a tour book of a concert he went to from some band in makeup called KI⚡️⚡️! Well needless to say that was my beginning of being a KISS fan I got Alive!, Dressed To Kill , and Destroyer from my mom, and Rock N Roll Over from my dad for Christmas in 76. Which lead to where I am today 😛😁🤘🏻

Both of my parents loved music and they were super young parents. So I grew up listening to classic rock. My dad loved 70s AOR (Steely Dan, Doobies, Fleetwood Mac, The Eagles) and my mom loved funk and rock n roll (Stones, Earth Wind and Fire, Jimi Hendrix). So, music was part of my life from a very early age. Also, my dad was a bit of a jock and I was not, so music is the one area we could connect. At some point my best friend and I wanted to play guitar. I was into the Stones and AC/DC (he was too, but he was more motivated by The Duke's of Hazzard them song). My dad had a huge record collection that I would dive into. Then, as a teen, I started my own collection.
MTV was an entry point into music back in the 80's. The Police greatest hits cassette that came out in 1986 really had an effect on my 15 year old self, I thougth that album was mind blowing, and it kind of still is. That was my first purchase of music, now I'm at the 2000 album mark.
This was a good episode with you and Anthony. I like how he emphasizes his view that what he likes is what he likes, because it means something to him, and it doesn't matter what others may like or try to sway him towards. That was much my own attitude and still is. I think a lot of young kids just listen to music because it's what their friends like, or because they feel they have to listen to to fit in. When I was in high school, if you were a guy, you had to like Alice Cooper, Black Sabbath, and Led Zeppelin, and to some extent Deep Purple, if you wanted to be accepted by the "cool crowd." Luckily, I liked all of those bands, with Purple being my favourite.
Now Brendon, I sent you a music compilation I made up called "The 38 Abums That Changed My Life." That's only about half of them, but a lot of the most important ones. In 1966 I was 10 years old, so my experience was much different than yours or Anthony's, maybe, but if you look through that, you'll have a very good idea of what got me into music. When I was a teen, learning the guitar and writing my own songs became a big focus for me, so that really was a big change for me. By the time I was in my early 20's I was playing bars on a regular basis, something I still do to this day, going on 68 this summer. You know, music is magic, and it can change your world and your life. Those of us who can see that and understand that, I think we are special. We see and hear and experience something a lot of other people can't do. Music is a gift in this world, and we should make the best of it, as much as we can.

I was brought up listening to the Beatles, stones, the who ect then my sister did me a copy of bat out of hell on cassette with deadringer on the other side which made me feel moved then seeing GN’R at the ritz on tv in 88 made me get out and buy AFD. Wow what a fun topic. I never really thought about how I got into music before, it's always been a big part of my life. I had fun trying to remember my first musical influences. I don't remember a time in my life where there wasn't some type of music. Both my grandparents play the organ and the piano ,we sang Christmas carols when I was small. One aunt introduced me to Johnny Cash. Another aunt introduced me to the Beatles. But it was my mom that really influenced my musical tastes. As an eight year old I paged though her record collection looking at these wonderful album covers and being intrigued.
She had such a variety of music. Martin Denny lounge music, The Boston Pops orchestra, Bach, Beethoven, Sounds of Italy. Tom Jones, The big bands, Herb Albert and the Tijuana Brass, Dizzy Gillespie and so much more. We would dance and sing together around the house.
My very first record I owned myself was The sounds of Hawaii. I traded a makeup kit to a girlfriend for it when I was Ten. When I was a teenager my mom drove me to k-mart to purchase my first record with my own money. The Yellow Submarine. I always thought of music as your best friend, It's always there for you to help you get through life's ups and downs. Thanks for taking me down memory lane.
My dad had a reel to reel tape player and house all ways had sounds throughout the house and my mom had the radio on none stop as well 🎉

My dad used to put John Mellencamp Pink House's on on his cassette player every night when I was going to bed. Favorite song with the most meaning to me to this day almost 40 years later.

My first record ( which I got C.O.D- look it up kids) was Silly Songs! Lol My first 8-track was Beach Boys Spirit of America. Than Kiss happened in my early adolescence. For some reason, I was listening to The Clash in 6th grade. And Really just locked into the energy. And then in Jr. High, my friend invited me to go with him and his dad to Ted Nugent at the Boston Garden. I was into it. And when Elvis died, i jumped into rockabilly and blues... of which the Clash was doing. I've been a music addict from early on.
For as long as I can remember I always remember music being in my life. My dad is a big music fan and was a huge Rolling Stones and classic rock fan, so as a kid there was always the stones or some kind of music playing in the car. We also had Much Music here in Canada that played a lot of different music that I got exposed to.
I also had older cousins who were into 90s rock alternative/ so-cal 90s punk so I got into those bands, Green Day being the first one. Then when nu-metal became popular I got really into that and had older cousins once again steer me in the direction of hard rock/metal and told me which bands to check out (I was and still am a big fan of all the older Roadrunner Records bands). Today I’m still a big metal/punk fan.

My music taste has developed on its own terms with many external influences (father, older brother, radio, MTV, reading, UA-cam). I am constanting buying and listening to music. I seem to have a very different experience with music than everyone else. I hated all music until I was almost 19. My parents aren't music people, so they didn't bother introducing me to any artists they liked because they didn't really like any. So I grew up listening to the shit they played on the radio, like Taylor Swift, Harry Styles, Coldplay, etc. and of course I hated it. I never understood why people blasted music in their cars or wore T shirts with their favorite bands or artists on them. I lived my entire childhood without ever hearing a single song I could connect with, relate to, or even like in general. I also got my phone very late compared to all the other kids, so I didn't have access to the internet for most of my life. But one day, my phone recommend a Marilyn Manson video, and I fucking loved it. It was the best thing I'd ever heard, and it opened my eyes to a world I didn't even know existed. I was hooked. This new love for 90s music led me to discover other artists and bands I have now come to love, such as Nine Inch Nails, Foo Fighters, Nirvana, Eminem, and even some 70s rock like David Bowie and KISS. I know Marilyn Manson is very controversial right now, but discovering him was the best thing that ever happened go me. I bought headphones for the first time, bought my first CD, and picked up a few autobiographys of artists I idolize. I'm discovering new artists and songs every day, and not a day goes by that I don't listen to music. That was my journey, and it's far from over.
I got into Kiss as the older Kid on my street was the first to bring Kiss into my world. When i heard it, i was hooked. Then another friends older brother used to crank Boston loud as hell from his basement bedroom. So it was Kiss and Boston that got me into my love of music.

Uriah Heep.. n Bread.. then got my first cassette frm my older cousin.. it was Blues Brothers’ briefcase full of blues album & a compilation of Lynyrd Skynyrd… bought my first cassette tape when i was 12.. it was Michael Schenker Group’s built to destroy.. n the rest is history… btw my first bought cd was Metallica’s master of puppets… \m/
For me, it was John Lennon's murder in Dec. 1980. I watched the reaction of the news anchors the day after. And I thought to myself, "This guy must have been really special". So, I asked my parents about John and The Beatles. And sure enough, they had two Beatles albums, "Beatlemania! With The Beatles" and "Beatles' '65". I played them a lot that Dec. And then in Jan. 1981, I bought my first rock album, "The Beatles 1967 - 1970". And it blew me away. And that led to "The Beatles 1962 - 1966" and several more Beatles albums that year. I also got into and bought albums by artists like The Rolling Stones, Elton John, The Beach Boys and Buddy Holly. By 1982, I had all The Beatles albums and was moving on to the solo Beatle works. In early 1983, I started listening to the radio, buying magazines, watching music videos and awards shows, and really getting immersed in the current music scene. But, it all started with John's murder. Before that, I only had or heard children's albums and liked a few film scores, like "Star Wars".
I think it must have been because music made me feel, and it still can do. Looking back, melancholy in music has always created some strong longing in me. One of the most powerful "rituals" that I know is listening to the right music as the sun sets or night falls.
What was cool for me at the age of Five I fell in love with music because my parents didn't care what I listen to. But the radio was on a lot and that's how I fell in love with songs and music. Meat Loaf was the musician I heard on the radio in 1994 right there it started. Bat out of Hell 2 Album I still love that album today. It's been crazy fun journey that I will always love. I love discovering music that was always there and didn't know that it was there the whole time. And there's music and songs that I like and I can't explain why I just do. That's fun for me. Sometimes when people find out some music I like I get odd looks that's so funny to me. I even ask myself why this song and I can't explain it. That's okay and it makes it fun.
For me, the hits are what draw me in to a band, but the obscure albums and deep cuts are why I stay.

I had seen iron maiden gnr and helloween shirts all around my hometown so bought a iron maiden killers tape then gnr appetite lp that's where I was hooked lol
I was drawn into music by getting a Walkman. I realized that wandering through the streets of my hometown is much cooler with listening to music. First cassette: Michael Jackson "Thriller", first CD: Redd Kross "Phaseshifter". Collecting music since then with a short break in the beginning of streaming - like so many. :(
Sorry Brandon, but I grew up in LA and was fortunate enough to attend a few of G&R's shows back in late 85/early 86 and there was nothing glam about them. And this is coming from somebody who loved the glam scene back then.

@@BrendonSnyder In my opinion (and that is all it is), GNR are an Aerosmith/Rolling Stones influenced band with a much harder/punkier edge. I’ve never thought of them as either glam or metal.

Actually, Journey's video of "Chain Reaction" did get MTV play. It was never a single though. It stands out on that album because it rocks so hard.
I was into music from when I was younger, but I was a beggar for listening to Buddy Holly and Elvis Presley as a kid, as it was music I was brought up on with ABBA, Chris Rea, The Beatles, Lionel Richie, Meat Loaf, Roy Orbison, The Clash and all that, but when I was growing up, I was listening to different things and I was loving different music from different artists from pop, rock and metal music and still do to this day from different artists and I love to have an eclectic taste in music and not an elitists taste.

My uncle was in a band in the 70’s and 80’s. So I was exposed to his music. Kiss was the pilot light. But the first 45 I bought with my own money was Sweet ‘Fox On The Run’ Rush Exit Stage Left / Def Leppard Pyromania / and Van Halen Fair Warning made me a maniac for music. The IV was set, and the drug was injested. I was hooked for life.
Cool Fox on The Run was one of my first 45’s as well. Always loved the intro to that song. 😁

Doctor Eddie Ganja here At a young age I got into Rock music The 2 Bands that blew me away were Deep Purple and Black Sabbath Sabbath became my All time Favorite band in 1974 After watching The 1974 California Jam on ABCs Entertainment World In Concert My favorite Guitar player is Ritchie Blackmore
My friends inflenced me very much. My dad was into easy listening like Perry Como The Andrew Sisters. im into Prog mainly, some metal, rock and jazz. Not Black metal or anything with a Honey Monster vocal except Opeth.
Now that makes me wonder why did my dad buy ME a 'music centre' (one of of those all in one things witht he wood vinyl wrap.) He didn't buy any audio equipment for my younger brother. That was such a huge thing to buy me at around 10 years old. Really got me into music. He brought himself a nice Akai tower around the same time. I must have shown some interest in music I guess.
What do you like in soul and funk Anthony? I didn't know you rolled that way. I might have to pay you a visit since my buddy in Warwick, NY moved and hasn't set up shop yet.
Greatest Hits people are easy to qualify, they are what I call "Fair Weather Fans." Those are the people who move units vs hardcore fans, the people in the know.
I used to be a "completest" where I had to have all the albums (I never heard about people who collected every variation of albums or singles until the Internet was around) and it was financially difficult to do. Now, not so much. I basically buy what makes me happy. Just because I like an artist/group doesn't mean everything is a gem, there's filler in there too.
Music is cool because it does appeal to both introverts and extroverts. You can listen to it in your bedroom (kid/teen) or living room (adult) either way as well as in a car.
Music got into me when I was about 7. That said I always liked watching MTV, Nickelodeon (they had a music show) and anything music back in the early 80s. I ALWAYS thought guitars were cool and musicians were the coolest. It got into me then I got into it.

What got me into music? Mostly what was on the stereo when I was younger. My dad played Billy Joel, Elton John, Gerry Rafferty, Beach Boys, Genesis, Phil Collins. And then myself obviously: I got into a-ha,Pet Shop Boys and a whole bunch of other music. I’m very open with my music selections. Any questions?

uufff I absorbed so much music since I was a kid.. the music my brothers used to listen to, what my parents liked, I took something from everybody. When I grew up and when I was 13/14 rock and blues and some of the pop stuff was my thing.. the beatles, creedence, clapton, bb king, bee gees... later on in school my friends at that time introduced me to metal.. the big names.. iron maiden, metallica, and back then nu metal was a big deal.. but I didn't like that much..yet!. I was very into pop-punk like green day... Then yeeeears later... I got deeper into metal.. one friend introduced me to power metal, another one to death and black, and the internet helped me to find many many bands. I can't stick to just one music style or genre.. lIfe is so big, we have so many emotions and feelings, we can't stick to one sound.. I go from lady gaga to cannibal corpse in a second, maybe one week I'm full on metalhead and next one I want to listen to blues all the time or reggae or edm/techno.
Music is my place to feel pure freedom and the best way to connect with myself, and that was a hard lesson to learn.. it took me a while to accept the diversity of music I like, and stop trying to fit in. Music is very reflective, introspective, it's a huge help to know oneself, to accept yourself, it's not an escape like many artists said... it's very therapeutic.
