Roly Salley/Chris Isaak - "Killing the Blues" and "Only the Lonely"

- Chris Isaak gave his acoustic guitar to Roly (bassist) and asked him to play "Killing the Blues." This is the song Alison Krauss and Robert Plant recently recorded. Apparently Roly wrote the song a while back but he won a Grammy for this recording. After that Chris pays respect to Roy Orbison with "Only the Lonely"
Getting a Grammy or winning an Oscar proves nothing about how good you are.
Great song I love it in fact I perform it all the time... I appreciate seeing Roly Salley perform it too....
What a beautiful song en what a voice - I love it so!
Shawn Colvin does a cover of this song that is absolutely stunning. My fave version. Wonderful song.
I believe she could sing anything and it would take my breath away! Her album, "Cover Girl" still sounds as good today as it did when I first heard it decades ago. She's very underrated!
Nanci Griffith is another singer who does mostly covers, but does them brilliantly. I love her duets with John Prine. I'll never get over losing dear John Prine, my favorite songwriter.
There is nothing sadder than losing yourself in the love! Best Line In a Song Ever!
Sadly, very true! I destroyed myself for "love". I met the love of my life in 1980 when I was 19. We had 8 happy years together, he was my soulmate and best friend. We were engaged to be married, but like young idiots, we thought we had plenty of time. We didn't. He died suddenly in 1989, and he took a piece of my heart with him.
I've been married since then, but never felt that kind of love again. I won't get married again unless I have that kind of love and mutual respect I had with Bert. It wouldn't be fair to a partner to have anything less than that.
@@LazyIRanch I understand I met my wife in 81 while playing in a rock band we married in 88 I lost her 2years ago I won’t ever marry again either
@@LazyIRanch I love the Robert Plant and Allison Kraus Album I was a LED ZEPPELIN fan and modeled my music after Zeppelin I was to work in the rock genre and when my drummer died in 2012 I was consoled in Nashville by Jimmy Page it’s such a small world ! Nice to meet you
I have a friend named Howard living in rural Thailand who does this song so much better than anyone else I've ever heard it's not even close. I mean, he is fantastic. Buried out here in the sticks, sadly almost no one has heard him
Maybe Howard might sing for us?? Would love that!!
Lyrics
Leaves were falling, just like embers
In colors red and gold they set us on fire
Burning just like a moonbeam in our eyes
Somebody said they saw me
Swinging the world by the tail
Bouncing over a white cloud
Killing the blues
Now I'm guilty of something
I hope you never do because there is nothing
Sadder than losing, yourself in love
Somebody said they saw me
Swinging the world by the tail
Bouncing over a white cloud
Killing the blues
Now you ask me, just to leave you
To go out on my own
And get what I need to
You want me to find what I've already had
Somebody said they saw me
Swinging the world by the tail
Bouncing over a white cloud
Killing the blues
Somebody said they saw me
Swinging the world by the tail
Bouncing over a white cloud
Killing the blues

love this
Great song...
The song is one of my favorites on Raising sand!
there's a guy Chris Smither sings this on his album " LIVE AS I'LL EVER BE" brilliant!!!!
FINALLY!!! Someone else recognizes Chris Smither’s contribution to this song’s lasting genius… and joy!
~Thanx~ rda
If you love this song (I do), best thing to do is get the album More Music From Mud Acres. It is featured there, done beautifully.
Malcolm Holcombe's version of this is absolutely stunning.
LOL Fun to hear the writer sing this song! Love those lyrics but what a lucky break for all of us he wasn't the one recording it! ;)
I love Roly's version
@@watkinsharp8756 Tastes differ and some people enjoy poor vocals because they care about other things more. Me..I prefer folks who can sing in tune and sing instead of shout.
what are some more songs written by Roy Salley? This is one of the finest songs written -- there must be some more gems to come out this mind.
Just look him up online and he has an album of awesome songs streaming on his website so you can sample. Buy it!
Was this recorded at the Biltmore a few years ago? It seems familiar...such a great show that night. Love the camaraderie of these guys--can't be matched. True professionals--on-time shows, they don't "phone it in," and their love and respect for each other shows. Great group of guys.
"Well, I think that's all the songs that Roly knows."
Don't know or care who's the "best" version is, but Sean Keanes version sure comes close!
I am the "Somebody". 1974 Paul came to see jc, his old gf. I hung out with him while they cleared up old issues. I had a dream and told him. My strange dream was put to music by Paul and Roland Salley (base player for Chris Issak). 80% of the lyrics are words I put to Paul. jc subdued my love too eventually. She now has an art studio in St.Petersberg Fl on the same street where John Prine has (had) a house. Shawn Colvin's version is my favorite. More of my words are on MySpace: buddyclaude
Sorry, didn't mean to be so snarky. The song actually had a noble history before it was "discovered" by the stars. The album was a consort recording of what are now legendary figures from the Upstate NY folk scene: Happy & Artie Traum, Rory Block, Keith and Rooney, Pat Alger, John Sebastian, Paul Siebel, Paul Butterfield. But we all knew that "Killing" was the killer. It was picked up early by Shawn Colvin, John Prine, and Chris Smither, and now it's back again. But the original is still magical
Mirina X I had that album many years ago. That’s where I first heard this song. Back then, I used to call it “Killing the Cats”, LOL.
My favorite cover of this song is the Chris Smither version.
Listen to his original version on "Music From Mud Acres"
I hope Roly has heard it song by Andrew Frost its one of the best out of many on youtube.
+John Evans Malcolm Holcombe, check it out, it's the best by far
Alright then, I haven't heard that recording and don't know where I am supposed to "check it out" other than buying the thing which is hardly likely considering it being advised by one who thinks this was not godawful!
But I did check out the albums credits and this Rolley is only listed as playing bass. Not as doing any vocals!
Why don't you put up a video of his vocals on that album, let me know and I will check it out! I will gladly stand corrected on my opinion of this dude's singing! :)
That is the way to hear a song. The writer just about always does it better. My opinion! Hell ain't we all got 8 or 7 of em?
Roly might have written the perfect song.
...on John Prine's Pink Cadillac album.
I know a guy who plays (sings) this song better than anyone I have ever heard. There isn't even a close number two. I have to record him.
My favourite version is by John Prine. Oh Yeah! But I'll check out the others mentioned...!
one of my favourite versions is Martin Simpson's .....
Love Roly Salley. Too bad Chris Isaak et al couldn't let him have the spotlight to himself during this performance which could have been spectacular without them "piping in."
I think the "piping in" you are hearing are the people in the audience near to the person recording the video. Chris Isaak was providing backup harmonizing vocals that would have sounded great if the audience wasn't singing over the top of it all. In addition, Isaak and Sally probably have played this together in rehearsals so I'm sure Roly approved of Chris's vocal addition.
Wrong! He sang on the original version, recorded more than thirty years ago. Check out Woodstock Mountains: More Music from Mud Acres.
Isn't his name Rowland Jon Salley?
Should have been titled, "Killing Killing The Blues".
Lol lol! Yep, Chris Smither kills this song, as opposed to Roly murdering it!
It's a shame that the audience was trying to sing along, their off-key yowling made it sound as if Roly was out-of-tune. He wasn't. This was a bad recording of a fantastic song and performance.
Who on earth was NOT singing harmony ?!? The guy taking the video - or Chris Isaak ?!? Whoever it is/was - they should have just shut up - and DEFINITELY not give up their day job . . . Nothing like wrecking a brilliant song by such off-key wailing . . .
LOL
That's the videographer.
I don't see how this band never put a solid arrangement of the song together. At least for concerts.
It's a damn masterpiece.
I totally agree Wanda Mundy.
there's a guy Chris Smither sings this on his album " LIVE AS I'LL EVER BE" brilliant!!!!
Smither OWNS this song, albeit it was written by Roly.
