@@willb0204 Russia is the king of everything in War Thunder. The only thing challenging their power is the F-14 tomcat. Also, in lower ranks (and in ground battles) the tomcat wont be of use for the Americans, thus allowing the Russians to continue their win streak.

You're too low for the phoenix to track and gain enough speed. Thinner air at high alt means they can actually have some legs for those long range shots.
I usually shoot from either between 4000 to 8000 feet don’t wanna get too high with the amount of radar you will be going against

Phoenix Gaming™ Tip: after you have launched the missiles, maintain soft (TWS) lock for as long as you can cuz the missile only activated its radar at the last few miles and needs the aircraft to keep updating it with target info. If not it’ll just extrapolate from the last known position and heading of the target and potentially smack into the ground.
Use the missiles on very distant targets (25+ km) as the longer the range, the more likely the rocket motor will run out, the more likely they won’t actually see it coming. Bring only 2 in a normal map and 4 in EC maps
One of the counters to the Phoenix system is to fly at super low alt because of that

Alright so there are some things people don't get about the new missle. The missle it self can lock on to planes yes but it doesn't have the same range as your radar. If the target is too far and you dump your missles and radar then the missles will just go into the ground. You have to keep your radar on the enemy plane till the onboard missle radar can be in range.
Phoneix tip: go high lock them up and shoot. Then proceed to crank left or righr by about 15 to 25 degrees to maintain lock while also diving from high alt

Although the aim 54 has a radar on bord, it’s best to keep lock for a while on the target as the radar on the aim 54 isn’t as good as the f-14s and could loose track and also has a very small bore sight
You know that to fire the aim54 you only need to have the target in tws mode not an actual radar lock right?

The phoenix radar has a range of 16km until then it's guided by the aircraft radar, it does not use INS guidance nor datalink
@@Ropetor it uses tomcat data link and flys in a straight line in the direction of the target, within like 10 miles the missile turns on its radar and goes pit-ball, however it’s always good to keep the target locked or on tws for data link as the horizontal angle of the aim-54s radar is only 12 degrees so it could miss the target
@@drewtucker2764 After reading some more the Phoenix should have a dead reckoning mode where it will fly to the last know position of the target and actiuvate it's radar at 16km regardless of target size, unlike a normal tws launch.
The aim 54 guides trough radar returns of the AWG 9 not datalink, it's basically a SARH that can work in TWS mode but it's inaccurate

How the hell are your wings still attached? My tomcat seems averse to living and likes to wing break if I even thought of pulling as hard as you are in this video lol. Its half the reason that I never spaded the last few upgrades and just switched back to other planes for top tier (also because I don't like how easy it is to notch this radar. Does have phenomenal range though).

@Hey, do i look like i give a fuck? IRL max range is about 60NM for first gen phoenix
You don't have to be at high alt for it to "effectively" track, you just need alt for it to gain speed better and to gain a relative maneuverability advantage over the enemy planes (which kinda makes it "track" better I suppose).
Also max range (at high alt) is still 150km, it's just that the maximum lock range has been nerfed so you can't do that. Idk what the effective range is of the phoenix at sealevel however, I don't think it's particularly great, probably similar to the AIM-7F but slower.
You have to keep a manual radar lock on the target until the missiles get there own lock onto the hostile then you can break away
Ok, as I assume, to do the somewhat cobra you have to go max elevator, turn to whatever side, and use your rudder on the same side, or the opposite
