I teach you how to adjust valves using my own diesel engines!

  • Hey guys
    So I have finally decided to commit to doing a proper How To video! I don't usually do these videos because they don't tend to perform well on UA-cam unless people are specifically searching for how to do something, which in the case of valves isn't very many people! However the first time I did a set of valves I felt so achieved and I think its a task simple enough for anyone to learn if your willing!
    Unfortunately How To videos also tend to bring out all the experts. I have tried to explain this video in the most basic and least complicated way so that someone not mechanically minded might still be able to understand. So I don't always use correct terminology and I have left ALOT out but hoping the video can help someone understand.
    I honestly believe in just getting hands on, building a passion through doing! I didn't realise how much I loved mechanical work untill I got hands on. I always encourage you to still have someone qualified or experienced to over look all your work if you are new to working on engines but please don't be scared off thinking you cant do it!
    In this video I take you through the basics of the Diesel Engine Cycle, what your valves do and why, I explain basic terminology like "on the rock" that people always mix up. Then I take you back to footage from 2019 of me adjusting the valves on my 1991 1hz which has a bucket and shim type valve arrangement. After that I run you through the FAR simplier method on my 12H-T which has a pushrod valve setup. The 12H-T footage is purely just to show you guys the process and some tips, as these style of valves must be adjusted hot (engine at operating temp)
    I hope even if you don't own an older diesel like these that everybody can take something away from this video. If you do please let me know! I am incredibly nervous uploading a video in this style because I know how critical the internet is!

    TERMS
    Camshaft: Opens and closes the Intake and Exhaust valves
    On The Rock: The valves of a cylinder that are overlapping ie. exhaust valve is closing as the intake valve is opening. Commonly mistaken to mean the rocker arms that are loose however it is the exact opposite. We cannot adjust valves of a cylinder that is "on the rock" because both valves are in motion and hence no gap is present to measure or adjust.
    OHV - Overhead Valve. Camshaft is located in the engine block and includes pushrods and rocker arms
    OHC - Overhead Camshaft. Where the camshaft is located in the cylinder head and can have bucket and shim style valves or rocker arms.

    My 80's 1hz has just gone over 700 k km's and is due for timing belt/tensioner + water pump and t-stat plus a shim adjustment. I did the last shim adjust 100 k km's ago about 7 yrs ago. Ye olde 1hz's keep on chugging with good attention to regular oil/filter and coolant changes. The Toyota FSM has all the details and we are super lucky that places like Precision Shims exist here on Australia!

    Love the Vid, good detailed info. But you need to get your self some De-Solv-it from bunnings, envoir safe, natural cirtus and Aussie made and owned "no I am not associatedwith them". Put some on a rag before you start and just use it on you and your tools, keeps everything super clean and oil and grease just wipes off. Not sure my wife would let me in the house after working on my cars if I didn't. Keep up the good work, can't wait to see more on the 60 series.

    At the risk of sounding nerdy here, I love the thought that in an internal combustion engine there is a split second every revolution where the entire piston/conrod actually stops completely before it goes into the next cycle, think about that next time your redlining your engine haha, nerdy I know, but frickin amazing when you really think about it 🤷‍♂️🍺👍

    Thing that always makes my head hurt when replacing shims is trying to figure out which (if any) of the shims can be swapped around to other valves.
    Back in the day, I used to grind valve shims on a lathe but, honestly, I was always a bit worried about whether it'd change the hardness of the shim and reduce it's life.
    In the old days, when an engine could only go 25,000 between major services, that probably wasn't a big deal but now we've got engines that can last 100,000 miles between major services it's probably best to use factory shims to ensure they're good for that mileage.
    Also, speaking as a 50 year old, the thing about "35 - too old" stung a bit. :-/

    Good job. Feeler gauge should be oiled or at least I was told, so I don't mind to be wrong. When doing 1hz, engine should be very cold because almost any heat changes specs.

    • @DanieSimpson
      @DanieSimpson  2 роки тому

      Yes correct 1hz cold, 12ht hot. Feeler gauges should be wiped with oil to prevent rust if your storing them.

  • @alasdairhamilton1574
    @alasdairhamilton1574 2 роки тому

    Danni why didn’t you make an adjustment to compensate for the engine being cold, when the Spec was .intake 008 exhaust.014 then engine is HOT. As you pointed out metal expand when hot therefore when your engine is hot your clearances will be tight? 👍🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

    • @DanieSimpson
      @DanieSimpson  2 роки тому +2

      As mentioned on the screen and in the description the 12ht is adjusted HOT not cold. What I was doing was simply for ease of explanation and demonstration. That engine has much more work to do on it before it goes back in the vehicle.

    Is there any dyno info on just what we loose with loose valves?

    • @DanieSimpson
      @DanieSimpson  2 роки тому +1

      on what power loss you have? possibly but normally its something you would rectify straight away not dyno. The loss would all depend on how far out of spec they are. If they are all loose, the engine will be incredibly noisy even at operating temp. This is something you would notice most likely before a drop in performance

    • @frankcherry3810
      @frankcherry3810 2 роки тому

      @@DanieSimpson I would just like to see a 4cyl hooked up to a dyno with correct valve settings, run it to see what it can put out, then run it a couple more times with it out of spec different amounts to see how being too loose or too tight affects output and performance. Ive never seen anyone do this. I know tight might burn the valves and loose is a bit noisy… but other than that is there any real harm or worry?

    • @DanieSimpson
      @DanieSimpson  2 роки тому +1

      @@frankcherry3810 yes the valves have a spec for optimal combustion and exhaust. Anything out side of this spec will cause a loss in performance and incomplete combustion.
