Now you have done it without realizing how your channel will GROW with views, Comments and Subs. The Pentaholics will find you and guide you through this large rabbit hole you have discovered. Alan-Freeman comment will give you details about the group if interested.
Suggestions for a band that does world tours with hundreds of covers and original songs.
RAP -- "Can't Hold Us" but lines are changed to reflect each of them. The base then was Avi Kaplan 2011-2017 and Matt replaced him as the new Base. This was the first Official video with Matt, hence he wears the white jacket to "stand out" but PTX has always allowed each member to shine with their individual talents. Plus they each have their own side projects.
Beatboxing suprise with Kevin's arraignment of "O Come All Ye Faithfull" will change your mind about the original song. They are not any one genre, but started with Christmas because people know the songs and most are public domain and free to record. Kevin has his own channel and a 17 minute performance called Kevin's 5th during their concerts.

I’ll leave it to others to give you a detailed history of Pentatonix, but they have been a band for 13 years, have 3 Grammys (and 2 additional nominations), a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and a catalogue of well over 200 songs, both covers and originals. They have done almost all music genres. Only 1 member has changed in the 13 years. Their original bass left in 2017 and was replaced by the singer on the far left in this video. Members L to R in this video are Matt Sallee (bass), Kirstin Maldonado (alto-soprano), Scott Hoying (baritone), Mitch Grassi (tenor), and Kevin Olushola (beat boxer and tenor). All of them have close to 6 octave ranges.

  • @margretrosenberg420
    @margretrosenberg420 6 місяців тому +24

    Where #Pentatonix came from:
Scott (tall blond lyric baritone, first soloist in this song), Mitch (contratenor with a range of just over 6 octaves, second soloist in this song), and Kirstin (the only woman in Pentatonix, sings anywhere from low alto through high soprano, has gorgeous whistle notes on top of that) are all from Arlington, Texas. They were all involved in community musical theater when they were in grade school, and Mitch met and became friends with both of the others when he was a preteen, but somehow Kirstin and Scott didn't meet until they were 14 and found themselves in the same class in high school.
They were all choir geeks (duh), and quickly became best friends in high school. At some point they formed a trio that performed at school events and occasionally appeared on local television. Not so imaginatively they named it "The Trio." (Whenever you hear a pentaholic refer to "the trio" they mean Scott, Mitch, and Kirstin.)
Scott and Kirstin were a year ahead of Mitch in high school; they graduated in 2010 when Mitch still had a year left to go, and each went off for their freshman year at college. Kirstin had a full ride scholarship at the University of Oklahoma and Scott went to the University of Southern California.
Scott is an extreme extrovert, so one of the first things he did at college was look for extracurricular activities where he could make new friends, and he quickly found and joined SoCal VoCals, an award winning amateur a cappella group. Through SoCal VoCals he met a man named Ben Bram who had a job as a coach on an a cappella competition show named "The Sing-Off" which was running on NBC.
The way _The Sing-Off_ worked was that bands would audition for the show, and those that passed the audition would perform throughout the season. Some bands would be eliminated along the way, tightening the competition. After the 12th performance voting was opened for viewers. First prize was $200,000 and a recording contract with Epic, a minor subsidiary of Sony, the show's sponsor.
Scott was intrigued when he heard about _The Sing-Off._ He thought The Trio could be competitive, and if they won it could give them a career doing what they loved best, with the people they loved best. The Trio need never split up. What a marvelous possibility! Scott talked to Kirstin about it, and she liked the idea, so at the end of their first year of college Scott and Kirstin went home to Arlington, to be there for Mitch's graduation and to talk with Mitch about Scott's plan.
Meanwhile, Mitch had been having a hard time. He was being seriously bullied for his high voice. Since Mitch and Scott are both gay and were already out of the closet this was really poorly disguised gay-bashing, but Mitch internalized it as actually being about his voice - he was rapidly concluding that he had a horrible voice and no one liked it. So when Scott presented his plan Mitch had doubts, but both Scott and Kirstin told him his voice wouldn't be a problem, and it was a way to get away from the bullies, so Mitch was in.
So Scott called Ben Bram to find out how to set up an audition, and they ran into their first major problem - _The Sing-Off_ had a size requirement - the smallest band allowed was five members. The Trio needed two new singers and a new name. Ben suggested that they'd do well to add a rhythm section: a bass and a beatboxer. He had someone in mind for the bass, an operatically trained basso profundo whose range extended up into the tenor range - the guy's name was Avi Kaplan. They talked to Avi, and he was, indeed, interested, but they still needed a beatboxer and Ben had no idea how they should go about finding one.
In desperation they went to UA-cam and typed in "beatboxer," and the first hit they got was a viral video of a black guy beatboxing while playing the cello beautifully. "Wow! He's the one! Let's get him!" Good idea, but how do you actually do that? Well, they looked for contact information and they found out that it was possible to send a direct message on UA-cam (this is no longer available), so they messaged him. "Hey, we really like what you do, and we have a strange question for you: How do you feel about flying across the country to join 4 strangers and audition for an a cappella competition show on television?"
And Kevin messaged them back: "Normally I'd love to do that, but right now I'm studying for my final exams to get my pre-med degree from Yale." Oh. That sounded pretty definite; better look for someone else - the audition was coming up fast. But no one else was as good as Kevin.
And two weeks later Kevin messaged them again: "Good news - I just graduated. If the gig's still open I can fly to California and audition with you." They met Kevin and Avi in person the day before the audition. Mitch had to miss his graduation ceremony to attend the audition. But they passed the audition; they were in.
Oh yes, the name. Pentatonix is named for the pentatonic scale, which has five (penta) tones just as Pentatonix has five (Penta) singers. In other words, it's a fancy way of saying they're The Quintet. 😂
Pentatonix appeared throughout season 3 of _The Sing-Off,_ eventually winning it. So they all moved to southern California to begin their new career recording music, and a week later Epic reneged on the contract, saying they didn't know how to market a cappella. But by this time all five of them were so totally dedicated to the dream of staying together that they decided to make it happen regardless of what record labels might say. So they pooled their money, used the $200,000 as seed money. The four men shared two apartments to save money. They lived frugally. They arranged music. They rehearsed daily. And whenever they had a song ready to go they recorded it on their iPhones and posted it to UA-cam, where their fans from _The Sing-Off_ quickly found and followed them. Then other people found and followed them, and they started going viral. And Sony noticed. "Um, hey Pentatonix. We have another subsidiary named Madison Gate. Would you like a recording contract with them? They mostly do movie soundtracks, but..." Darn right they'd like a recording contract!
And then they published "Daft Punk Medley," and it didn't just go viral, it won a Grammy. Grammys weren't something Sony expected to come out of Madison Gate. "Um, hey Pentatonix. We think we made a mistake placing you with Madison Gate. We think our flagship company, RCA, might be a better fit for you. Are you interested?" Pentatonix has been with RCA ever since.
Avi left the band in 2017, for personal reasons. He has since gone on to have a very successful solo career, and I highly recommend subscribing to his UA-cam channel: youtube.com/@AviKaplanMusic
Matt is Avi's replacement; he joined in late 2017 or early 2018 (depending on how you figure it). In addition to being the newest member of Pentatonix Matt is also the youngest member, and bass voices improve with age. "Sound of Silence" was recorded four years ago and doesn't give an accurate idea of Matt's current range. For that I recommend listening to a recent live feed of "Hallelujah," where Matt's arrangement on the second verse appears to have been designed to show off his full range: ua-cam.com/video/ASYzLoi810k/v-deo.html

“Sounds of Silence” is not a church song. I am a 60s child, I was 17 when this song came out on the radio and I immediately learned to play and sing it. It is a song about how shallow most of our communications are (people talking without speaking, people hearing without listening) and tries to address the deeper parts of ourselves that we try and hide from one another. Paul Simon, the author, is a fantastic songwriter and has twice been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and has 16 (yes, sixteen!) Grammy Awards to his credit including 3 for Album of the Year. Other songs Pentatonix performs spectacularly and DO have a religious bent to them are “Amazing Grace” and “The Prayer”, both performances that will knock your socks off. “Hallelujah” is NOT a religious song, it is a song about failed relationships and Leonard Cohen (who wrote the piece) uses a couple of biblical references to help make his point. For something upbeat that displays Pentatonix’s crazy abilities take a look at “Daft Punk” (Grammy winner), “90s Dance Medley”, “Bohemian Rhapsody” and “Can’t Hold Us” (they Rap in this one). Pentatonix is famous for adding their unique twists to their covers and you can’t go wrong no matter what you choose. Enjoyed your reaction, I’m a confirmed Pentaholic, have Liked and Subscribed to your channel and look forward to more of your reactions to them.

"The Sound of Silence" was cowritten by Simon and Garfunkel in 1963 shortly after the assassination of JFK and was released in 1964. According to Garfunkel, the song is about people's inability to communicate with each other, especially emotionally. My suggestion for where to go next with Pentatonix is to react to their cover of Hallelujah then move on from there watching and listening to their progression throughout their years together. Enjoy.

This statement is truer than most Pentaholics realize. Their music is incredibly complex using suspensions, hemiolas, 7th chords, supertonics (where tonics are expected) and dissonant harmonies, something I don’t hear much of in other A Capella groups. They do VERY risky arrangements and make them work through their professionalism and ability to listen to each other while singing.

I've been a subscriber for awhile, but this just popped up today! I'm also a devoted follower of Pentatonix. I love how you just stared at the beginning of the video...they are amazing. I can see others have commented on Paul Simon and his great talent. Being and "older person", this was on the soundtrack on my life! In the 60s, a lot of songs had a "protest" kind of feel to them. It could be the way Pentatonix sang it that made you feel "in church!" They will take you to "church" on a lot of songs! They built their following on putting out a Christmas album every year! They also have original music and have done rap, of a sort. The did Macklemore and Lewis' "Can't Hold Us" which is a lot of fun (they changed up a few lyrics) I see you were wanting 3K subscribers and you're now almost at 7K. That's what happens when you react to Pentatonix!! LOL You are a different reactor because you actually review the lyrics, and I like that. It makes you really think about things. You have a lot of videos to choose from for Pentatonix, for sure. Have fun!!

Sound Of Silence is a classic by Simon and Garfunkel. It has been endlessly interpreted and covered but leave it to Pentatonix to upgrade it. Since you're into analyzing lyrics take a shot at PTX's Can't Hold Us, Come Along, White Winter Hymnal, Be My Eyes, and Prayers For This World. If you want to take a break and just sit back to listen to some music there's Dance Of The Sugar Plum Fairy - a song without words sung by a group without instruments. Pentatonix a "brief" background.
They won The Sing Off in 2011. They made a guest starring appearance on America′s Got Talent as non−competitors a couple of years after that.
    The founding members are:-
    Scott Hoying (tall blond guy, natural baritone but has an impressive five−to−six octave range, can go all the way up to high tenor and down to bass, sings the bass lines when the usual bass singer takes the lead);

Kirstin "Kirstie" (Rhymes with "Thirsty") Maldonado (the only female member, natural mezzo soprano, but can go down to low alto and as high as upper soprano, also can sing in whistle notes that are off the scale); For a time in 2018 between the group’s tours, had the female lead on Broadway in the production of “Kinky Boots”.
    Mitch Grassi (a true contra−tenor, can hit high notes in his chest voice with ease and go WAY higher in his falsetto, also with ease);
Avriel "Avi" Kaplan (dark beard and long hair), true basso profundo, trained as an opera singer, also can go up into the tenor range; and
Kevin "KO" Olusola (beatboxer extraordinaire, also is a world−class cellist who plays cello on some of their songs, has a beautiful high tenor voice and gets occasional lead vocal solos as well, graduated pre−med from Yale and speaks several languages including Mandarin Chinese).
Kirstie, Scott & Mitch grew up together in Arlington, Texas, and began performing together as children in local youth musical theater. They ended up in high school together and performed in the choir. While there, they formed an a cappella group called The Trio which had several performance videos go viral on UA-cam, most notably a cover of Lady Gaga′s "Telephone". The three of them are best friends and consider themselves to be almost siblings.
Scott & Kirstie (who were a class year ahead of Mitch) both graduated high school in 2010 and went their separate ways to different colleges, Scott at USC and Kirstie at Oklahoma.
While at USC, Scott joined a USC−based a cappella group called the SoCal VoCals, where he met alumnus Ben Bram, who was now an arranger and vocal coach for the NBC TV show The Sing Off, an a cappella competition show. Ben convinced Scott to get The Trio to audition for the show. The three reunited (Mitch had to skip high school graduation ceremonies to go) in Los Angeles for the audition.
They found out that the rules had changed, so they needed at least five members to audition. Ben put them together with Avi (a native of Visalia, California), who he knew from Avi′s performing days at Mount San Antonio College in California. They found Kevin (from Kentucky) through one of his UA-cam videos that had gone viral featuring him playing the cello and beatboxing at the same time, a talent that Kevin coined as "Cello−Boxing".
Kevin arrived in Los Angeles literally the day before the audition! Scott came up with the name "Pentatonix" after the pentatonic scale. They performed a re−arrangement of "The Telephone" for the audition and passed, despite having been together as a five−piece group for less that 24 hours!
They won The Sing Off that season (all of the performances are available on UA-cam), in which they received a substantial cash prize AND a record contract with Epic Records. They pooled their prize winnings together and all moved to Los Angeles, and all got apartments right next door to each other in the same building.
But just a week later, Epic dropped them because the marketing people didn′t think an a cappella group could sell records.
Instead of giving up, they were determined and began recording their own songs on UA-cam, hiring Ben Bram as their producer and arranger. These usually consisted of the five of them sitting on a couch and performing cover songs live.
Several of the videos went viral, and Sony (the parent company of Epic) decided to give them another chance by placing them on one of their smaller labels, Madison Gate. They released two secular EPs and one Christmas EP on Madison Gate, all of which were strong sellers.
But when their cover of a medley of songs by Daft Punk not only went super−viral, but also won them their first Grammy, they were promoted all the way up to RCA Records, Sony′s top label.
They began writing and producing their own songs in addition to their covers, began putting out a Christmas album just about annually (which has become their best−selling genre), and have had multi−platinum album sales, sold−out world tours, and have won two additional Grammys.
Avi began getting burned out with all of the touring and heavy recording schedule, was suffering from anxiety and personal problems, and learned that his mother had been diagnosed with cancer in 2017. He announced he was departing from the group and taking some time away from the music industry.
Matt Sallee (from Baltimore) joined them in September 2017. He did only become official when they renewed their RCA contract in February 2018, but he recorded with them in September as a featured artist and went on their Christmas tour as a featured artist, as well. When he attended the audition for the group, he had already mastered the Bass part for most if not all their past catalogue. He was successful and has proved that he fits in well with the group.
If you think there have been other changes to the line up - look again. This is the ONLY change. Kirstie and Mitch are like chameleons and change looks frequently.
It is an often debated subject among the Pentaholics as to just how soon we introduce the "Beginners Guide" as we don't want to overdo the introduction. This is a compilation of snips of a whole load of songs which PTX have released. It highlights each member with some of their solos and then a brief history in video. It is quite long - 14+ minutes and is a little dated now (Feb 2020) but is a good watch ua-cam.com/video/lDxIfwfCmQE/v-deo.html&pp=ygUdYmVnaW5uZXJzIGd1aWRlIHRvIHBlbnRhdG9uaXg%3D.
After a year away from music, Avi has now returned as a phenomenal solo artist in the Folk/Americana/Roots genre.
Ben Bram has been in charge of their production, including arranging and directing from the beginning. He is often referred to as the sixth member. Scott and Kevin are major players in the arrangements, but every member contributes. A good watch is "The Recording of Evergreen" where a camera was invited into the studio for the second week of recording/
Also, all members are songwriters for both Pentatonix and their own solo work.
Ed Boyer who mixes everything of theirs (even the HWB Livestream) is the one who pulled Ben Bram into the sing off in the first place.
They have Grammy wins for Daft Punk Medley, Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy, and Jolene featuring Dolly Parton. They were nominated for a 4th Grammy for their album Evergreen, but didn't win. Another nomination for Holidays Around the World album in the 2024 list!
Kirstie became a new mum which caused a pause in touring after their Evergreen Christmas tour 2021. Mid March 2023 Kirstie has announced that she is engaged to Ben Hausdorff, their videographer. They married 22/04/24!
They have a star on the Hollywood walk of fame installed in February 2023. They are the only a capella group with a star!
They came 3rd in the 2023 Masked Singer performing as "California Rolls" being unmasked in May 23.
Things you need to know because if you get these wrong Pentaholics will come after you with pitch forks and torches! Ha Ha!!
1- There is NO Auto-Tune; what you hear is actually what they sing. They really are that good. One exception is the 90's Dance Medley where Cher used autotune as an effect - so they had to.
2- What produces everything that you hear in the video, you see in the official video. If there is an instrument used in the music, you see it on screen. In the 2022 Christmas album, there are some instruments not featured throughout the album.
3- They never release something on video they can’t reproduce with the exact same quality live on-stage.
    4. It is "Pentatonix" there is no "The".

I love PTX for their talented world-class singing and beatboxing, their amazing harmonies and creativity, and for their diversity and what wonderful human beings they are. There has only been one member change since they started 13 years ago - the bass left on good terms. The beatboxer is a world class cellist and saxophone player, graduated from medical school, speaks several languages including Mandarin, and sings beautifully (he is the only member with perfect pitch). To get a taste of his talents, I recommend their cover of Seal’s Kiss From a Rose, or Kevin’s Fifth which is live from their Kentucky concert or his cover of Down on his solo channel, KO for Kevin Olusola.

Your reaction activated my Pentatonix algorithm. You’re the first reactor that I’ve seen break down the lyrics. Two suggestions. Definitely take breaks in the video but you still may need to blur or put a filter if you don’t want it blocked. They do a lot of covers but also have original content and their lyrics are 🔥🔥. Hoping you go down this rabbit hole and do some of their old and new stuff. They were always amazing, so you can only image how great they are after 13 years together. (You already have a lot of comments so I’m sure someone gave a history already.) Recommend- Daft Punk, Imagine, Mad World, New Rules x Are You That Somebody & Kiss from a Rose.

This song was written by one our greatest poets who writes songs. Many song writers cannot be called true poets. Paul Simon IS a GREAT POET. So when you miss read his words...pardon me...but I groan.
"People writing songs that voices never 'shared'. No one 'dared' disturb the sound of silence". Notice "shared" & "dared rhyme. "Sang" & "dared" do not.
This song is about the signs of our times. Example: "And the sign said the words of the prophets are written on the subway walls and tenement halls..." might mean graffiti artists? It also bemoans the fact that people can see all the ways things are going south but don't speak up or do anything about it.
Glad you appreciate this beautifully constructed song. PTX have so many amazing songs for you to discover. But I slso hope you will check out many more Paul Simon songs. SIMON & GARFUNKLE were a VERY popular duo in the 1970s. May I suggest listening to the official studio recordings of "Bridge Over Troubled Water", "The Boxer", & "America".

They aren’t an a cappella group, they are THE a cappella group. Fans of Pentatonix are called Pentaholics. Everything Pentatonix does is great.
This is an old sixties song by Simon and Garfunkel song. This was the era of amazing lyrics as influenced by Bob Dylan. Paul Simon said that though he didn’t plan it, some of his lyrics sound like hymns (example: Like a Bridge over Troubled Water). So if you want interesting lyrics listen to Bob Dylan, Paul Simon, or Kris Kristopherson. Very little can compare to them. Try Hard Rain.

Here’s the original interpretation of the lyrics.
Garfunkel, introducing the song at a live performance (with Simon) in Haarlem (Netherlands), in June 1966, summed up the song's meaning as "the inability of people to communicate with each other, and not particularly internationally but especially emotionally, so that what you see around you is people who are unable to love each other."[5]
Garfunkel's college roommate, Sandy Greenberg, wrote in his memoir that the song reflected the strong bond of friendship between Simon and Garfunkel, who had adopted the epithet "Darkness" to empathise with Greenberg's sudden-onset blindness.[12]

If you decide to continue down this rabbit hole you can expect a LOT of new subscriptions; #Pentatonix fans are enthusiastic about reaction videos to anything our favorite band puts out.
    Some useful terminology:
    • pentaholic = Pentatonix fan
    • PTX = abbreviation for Pentatonix - extremely useful in searches
    • the trio = Kirstin, Mitch, and Scott
    • Mitch slap = what you get the first time you realize how incredible Mitch's voice is.
    • Avi-lanche = like a Mitch slap, except with Avi instead of Mitch.
    • KO = like a Mitch slap or Avi-lanche, except with Kevin Olusola.
(Note: You never become immune to Mitch slaps, Avi-lanches, KOs, or the similar things that Kirstin, Scott, and Matt do. They always have the ability to surprise us.)
You can't go wrong listening to anything Pentatonix has released; it's all gorgeous. But all pentaholics have our own personal favorites that we like to recommend. These are some of my favorites:
    • "Hallelujah" (the official video, with Avi)
    • "Hallelujah" ( a recent live performance, with Matt: ua-cam.com/video/FqphhPapkoc/v-deo.htmlsi=tC6Ew07JGeQKQvDL )
    • "Imagine" (the official video)
    • "The Prayer"
    • "Bohemian Rhapsody" (the official video)
    • "Run To You" (an original, written by Avi and Kevin; the official video is the best rendition available)
    • "Happy Now" (another original, look for the official video)
    • "Daft Punk Medley" (their first Grammy winner)
    • "O Come All Ye Faithful"
    • "O Holy Night" (they did a totally new recording for their 2023 Christmas album; you can find the official video here: ua-cam.com/video/ReJAU2mXm8w/v-deo.htmlsi=upj2Q3vLqigVEtgm )
    • "Pure Imagination / Christmas Time is Here" (preferably the live Vevo recording)
    • "Kiss From a Rose" (preferably the live Vevo recording - both of the Vevo recordings are available on UA-cam)
    • "You're A Mean One, Mr. Grinch"
    • "The Lucky Ones" (an original, written by Scott)
    • "Thank You" (an original, written by Scott and his then fiancé, now husband, Mark Manio Hoying, shortly after the end of COVID lockdown, about how much easier it was to get through that time because they were together)
    • "The Kevin Show/Kevin's Fifth." This is a live feed from a concert they gave in Owensboro, Kentucky, Kevin's home town: ua-cam.com/video/DbCasvcNx78/v-deo.html and this is the very special performance of "Kevin's Fifth" (without "The Kevin Show") from Kevin's birthday in 2022: ua-cam.com/video/7m0g7xThIWs/v-deo.htmlsi=99F7iG5qkdgPCm43
Additionally, IF you're familiar with _"The Wizard Of Oz"_ (the 1939 movie starring Judy Garland), I recommend "Todrick Hall - The Wizard of Ahhhs (ft. Pentatonix)": ua-cam.com/video/QkVeKb2igrg/v-deo.html If you've never seen the movie it won't make sense, so take care of that first. One advantage to reacting to "The Wizard of Ahhhs" is that you won't need to obscure the video to avoid copyright claims. Most of Pentatonix's copyrights are owned by their publisher, RCA, and RCA is notorious for getting reaction videos taken down over copyright issues, but the copyrights for "The Wizard of Ahhhs" are owned by Todrick Hall, and Todrick seems to be more interested in good publicity than in stomping on innocent reactors. (I regret to say that Todrick has gotten a lot of bad publicity in recent years, for very good reasons; he appears to be something of a jerk. But making copyright claims against other UA-camrs isn't one of his vices.)

  • @lovesmusic0845
    @lovesmusic0845 6 місяців тому +3

The Sound of Silence was originally released in 1965 by Simon and Garfunkel. The original is a very stripped down version but it is beautiful too. S&G broke up in 1970 but managed to produce the best selling album, Bridge Over Troubled Waters, before that happened. Paul Simon is a phenomenal song writer who went on to have a huge solo career. Sixteen Grammy awards including three for album of the year. If you love lyrics, he’s your guy. He’s 82 now but still performs a bit.
I’m a certified Pentaholic. 😂 Been a big fan since 2011, when they won a short lived series called The Sing Off. I see others have given you the information on the group’s history, likelihood your videos will get blocked and just how phenomenal they are as artists.
Pentatonix (PTX) will blow your mind with their sound. From the early days, when they made their videos on a couch to becoming world wide, multi platinum Grammy winning artists with over 20 million UA-cam subscribers and over 5 billion views on their videos, they are the real deal.
There are over 200 videos of them out there. If you want to get a better sense of their process, check out their mini documentary of the recording of the album Evergreen.
They range from really fun material like Can’t Hold Us by Macklemore and Lewis, Sing (one of their originals), Daft Punk Medley to incredibly beautiful serious ones like Hallelujah, The Prayer, Mary Did You Know, Run to You. They’ve focused a lot on Christmas music and done incredibly creative and beautiful upgrades of most Christmas songs.
They tour frequently, do a lot of TV (they were part of the opening act on the 2024 Grammy’s) and collaborate/record with other best selling artists.
There are some excellent live recordings of their tours. Pop Spring 2016 is a great early show case. Hollywood Bowl 2022 and the Christmas 2023 Livestream are amazing. If you doubt their skills, there are videos where they are just standing in rooms with no mics killing it. The Daft Punk medley in a back room somewhere is particularly impressive.
I hope you do more PTX reactions. I’m subbing for them and enjoy the ride.

The members of #Pentatonix. In this song:
    • First verse, tall blond guy: Scott Hoying, lyric baritone. In describing a man's vocal range, "lyric" means that the actual range exceeds the nominal range. In Scott's case, he sings everywhere from about the middle of a normal bass range through a normal tenor range, with an excellent falsetto on top. In live performances Scott typically takes over the bass harmony line when their bass has a solo.
    • Second verse, dark haired guy next to Scott: Mitch Grassi (pronounced Grah'-see, emphasis on the first syllable), contratenor. Mitch has a range of just over 6 octaves, but he's most comfortable in his higher registers. He switches between chest voice, mixed voice, and head voice seamlessly, and is known for his ethereal high solos. Everyone in Pentatonix says he has the best voice of any of them.
    • Third verse, black guy in a white jacket on the far left: Matt Sallee (pronounced Suh-lee', emphasis on the second syllable), lyric bass. It's hard to be sure just what Matt's range is, because it's still growing. To find his current range I recommend listening to a live stream of "Hallelujah" from their most recent world tour, though you may want to watch their official video of "Hallelujah" first so you can hear what it sounded like with their original bass, Avi Kaplan, who left Pentatonix in 2017 for personal reasons. You can find the recording with Matt here: ua-cam.com/video/FqphhPapkoc/v-deo.htmlsi=tC6Ew07JGeQKQvDL Matt's arrangement of the second verse seems to be designed to show off his full range, which is fantastic. His lowest notes don't blow out speakers the way Avi's have done (though they may within a year or two), but on the high end he's very close to the top of a normal tenor range.
    • Fourth verse, the only woman in Pentatonix: Kirstin (also called Kirstie, which rhymes with thirsty) Maldonado, alto and soprano. Kirstin sings anywhere from a low alto (though not contralto, which is the female equivalent of baritone) through coloratura soprano, the highest female range. And she has whistle notes on top of that which are off the charts. Lately Pentatonix has begun referring to her as an "alto soprano."
    • The fifth member of Pentatonix is the black guy on the right: Kevin Olusola (pronounced Oh-loosh"-oh-luh', primary emphasis on the second syllable, secondary emphasis on the fourth syllable), beatboxer extraordinaire. Somewhere there may be a better beatboxer than Kevin, but if so I've never encountered him or her. Kevin is generally too busy being the entire percussion section to sing, but when he does sing he has a lovely tenor voice that occasionally dips into the uppermost reaches of baritone, and he's known for the beauty of his falsetto. He's also a pretty good rapper. Kevin has perfect pitch. He began piano lessons at age 4, cello at age 6, and alto saxophone at age 10. He beatboxes while playing the cello, a technique he calls "celloboxing." He performed at Carnegie Hall twice when he was a teenager, once on the cello and once on the saxophone. He graduated from Yale in 2011 with a pre-med major and had been accepted to Yale Medical School before he decided to become a professional beatboxer instead of a brilliant surgeon. He speaks five languages fluently: English, French, Spanish, German, and Mandarin Chinese. He's one of the kindest people in the world, and when he laughs he makes the whole planet seem like a brighter place.
Matt joined Pentatonix in late 2017 or early 2018 (depending on how you figure it), after their original bass left the group for personal reasons in 2017; he has now been with Pentatonix longer than their original bass was. Which brings us to the one member of Pentatonix who doesn't appear in this video:
    • Bearded white guy who usually wore a beanie or stocking cap: Avi (pronounced Ah'-vee, emphasis on the first syllable) Kaplan, lyric bass. Avi is an operatically trained basso profundo - his lowest notes have blown out speakers in live performances - but his range extends upward to about the middle of the tenor range. Since leaving Pentatonix Avi has gone on to have an extremely successful solo career; I highly recommend subscribing to his UA-cam channel, which you can find here: youtube.com/@AviKaplanMusic
The appearance of Mitch and Kirstin tends to vary greatly from one video to another, so people will frequently think they see someone new in Pentatonix when it's really Kirstin or Mitch. With these two, go by their voices, not their appearance; their voices don't lie. To be clear: Avi is the ONLY member who's left Pentatonix and Matt is the ONLY member who joined later.

It’s also about social isolation in our modern society. It was prescient. It was written in 1965 before social media and cell phones.
