After seeing the video many times, I read a comment listing the songs in the medley, and said, "Around the World? When did they sing that?" So I had to go back and watch it again (how awful - LOL!) and finally caught Kirstie doing it both during Avi's solo and in the final big mashup section. I really liked the panning they did for the first time, matching it to the lyrics of "around the world" and having her voice going from left to right but behind your head, so you didn't miss out on Avi in the foreground.
that stereo part has been mentioned on numerous reviews years ago when this got attention. What isn't mentioned is avi's polyphonics. Like two reviewers ever mention it.
The famous "recorded-in-a-closet" Grammy winner. Their studio rental fell through, and this was recorded in the apartment that Kevin and Avi shared. The final mix, and editing were rumored to cost around $400. (Don't know if that included the blue contacts 😊) Then----a Grammy!
Great reaction! The video is even more impressive because they did it for about $400. They recorded in a closet and filmed it in Avi and Kevin’s kitchen. Yes! Always love seeing reactions to daft punk medley! So fun. Speaking of Avi's low notes...he just released a new song, Feel Alright . It is a bassy, rockin, groovy banger! Very different and so good! Cheers!
This was thoroughly enjoyable! They’re all fantastic but Avi is my favorite so it was a special treat to hear him replayed so often. I’ve never noticed Kirsten going around the world!
😊 Pentatonix never ceases to amaze me, at just how incredibly talented they are, and take their voices to newer levels, we have never heard before.....there is something so special about their ability, to tell the songs story, allowing us to listen with a new perspective, and hear & feel emotions, we may not have heard from the original artist 💖💖💖 Not only their voices, but their delivery is also their gift!
I can’t even tell you how may reactions to this video I’ve watched! But this one is my favorite cause FINALLY someone is as excited as I am at Avi’s bass drop!!!! I get goosebumps every time I hear it. Thank you for sharing your experience with us all.
Your reactions were so much fun to watch :)! Jeremy, the anticipation you must have felt having already heard the song and knowing what Jillian was about to experience just had to be so rewarding. We Pentaholics understand because that is why we all flock to new reactors, we just have to see the joy and amazement they display appreciating the topnotch talents and skills of these wonderful performers. Thanks for a great ride, I Liked and Subscribed and look forward to more Pentatonix magic in the future!
In almost every PTX song I’ve ever heard, I never hear everything the first time through. It usually takes twenty or so times before I’m satisfied. Most people don’t comment on the dissonance just before the Avi part, you didn’t either. If you’ve ever performed a cappella, you’d know how hard it is to get that perfect note. The dissonance is only achieved when all the notes are exactly on pitch, otherwise it sounds like geese honking. Another great song, in terms of production value, is My Favorite Things. I think they should have won a Grammy for that one as well.
This one comes avery close 2nd, but as a vocalist.. their Aha!Singapore, live Star Vista HAS to be one of the craziest & best things I've EVER heard from anyone! Insanity! ❤
Omfg, I have this medley in my music playlist and have heard it dozens of times at least, and had never heard that she was singing “Around the World” until you pointed it out. Mind blown.
Excellent reaction! Crazy to think this was filmed in Avi and Kevin's apartment. They remain great friends to this day. I look forward to you both reacting to Avi's latest entitled Feel Alright. It was released last Friday. He also released another track entitled Healing which is beautiful. ♥
Thank you so much for making us aware of Kristen doing 'around the world'. I have listened to this track hundreds of times and honestly never noticed 🤦♀. I would love you both to watch their version of Bohemien Rhapsody by Queen. Truly amazing and fingers crossed i haven't missed anything in this one
theres a couple more "around the world" at the end by kirstie as well - you have to just keep your eye on her to hear it - its weird ive gone years before i noticed myself
I have heard this so many times, seen SO many reactions on it. Your pointing out All Around the World part is the first time I noticed it as well. She also did it again near the end when all the squares were bouncing around!
The jukebox at work has One More Time on it so I play it twice a day but I always hear Mitchs' reprisal from the second half of this performance. it's so good
One of my top three PTX! I'm not very familiar with Daft Punk, so although I heard what Kirstin sang (after many many relistens probably) it didn't mean anything to me, it was just a cool countermelody. I hope you will also react to their _History_ _of_ _Music_ sometime...
Since you both appreciated Avi's lows in this, check out his latest original solo release from just this last Friday, "Feel Alright". It's a real departure style-wise for him, but as a solo artist, he does cross genres to make whatever he feels like, not tied down to one style. And that's him on the electric guitar, and doing all the background vocals (as usual). ua-cam.com/video/StNt-2pIsXs/v-deo.html
You bet, but it won't come out until March. Our Feb calendar is booked. We need to do better finding out about certain song releases in advance so we get them out more timely. I'm (Jillian) on it, but any suggestions always welcomed!
Pentatonix are still creating even more memorable videos today. You should check out Kissed From A Rose and Holy night among others that came out 2023.
Thanks so much for watching and the suggestion!! We did "Kiss from a Rose", and def need to check out O'Holy Night - tons of comments about this one. Appreciate you! ua-cam.com/video/VcaagcsZLbE/v-deo.htmlsi=0JskFJ_nznzQ0PSy
A classic for sure. I've never realized Kirstin song around the world in the background either, but once you pointed it out I heard her do it several more times towards the end. Pentatonix are incredible. I'd love to hear their take on one of the Waring's songs, probably one of the softer ones like Black Holes or Revenant. Looking forward to Warning Wednesday. Are you going to check out their new song S!CK that was released this past Friday?
Yep!! But it will be a little bit before we publish the reaction, since we have 3-4 more Warning donation requests to cover on Wednesday's first. But promise, we'll get there!!
You seem to really enjoy Avi's lows, you should check out Black is the Color of my True Loves Hair with Peter Hollens he goes through the basement right up front not a baseline in the background and it is beautiful. Also his solo music covers his entire 5 octave range.
I know I'm a bit late to the party but if you haven't yet - check out their original song Love Again. Its got the same kind of EDM beat and you think Avi hits a low note here? You ain't heard nothing yet! It has become my all time fav of theirs and the rest of their original stuff is amazing too. Sing is so upbeat and makes you smile and Happy Now is great too.
Oh. My. Gosh, @JayZFrank!!! What an incredibly generous and kind offer- especially on your birthday!! THANK YOU for thinking of us!!!! Allentown, PA, is that right??
You commented on Kirsten's crooked smile. There are conflicting stories about this including that it is leftover from a minor accident that partly paralyzed a cheek muscle, and a different story that it is an affectation she thought would make certain sounds come out better. She does it less often now, so I tend to think that the second story is more accurate. But when PTX first hit the scene, that crooked smile was sexy AF. As to Kirsten singing a different song than the others, that happens more than once. In the end sequence, song mixes occurred in the melange of sound that is another trademark of theirs.
you want a challenge? Go get Simon and Garfunkle, Disturbed, and Pentatonix versions of Sound Of Silence. Compare the three. One was a warning, the second an admonishment for not heading the warning, and the last is a message of hope that there is still time to head that warning. And you will get to see/hear the impact of different stylings of sound and sight on a song.
Kevin is an original member of Pentatonix; he's the beatboxer. Matt replaced Avi, and that's the ONLY change in the membership of Pentatonix. Kirstin and Mitch are like chameleons; their looks have changed numerous times over the years. So a lot of people think they see someone new in Pentatonix when it's really Mitch or Kirstin. Ed Boyer is Pentatonix's audio mixer and he's a genius. When people suddenly realize how fantastic Mitch's voice is we refer to it as a "Mitch slap." When it's Avi we call it an "Avilanche." With Kevin it's a "KO." And I don't know what we call it when it's Scott, Kirstin, or Matt, but all of them do it, frequently.
I, too, never before noticed her singing Around the World, or all that panning. As I am sure others have mentioned, Kevin is the one doing the amazing beat boxing. Avi's replacement is Matt, who somehow manages the seemingly-impossible feat of being just as awesome as Avi.
If I remember correctly, This was their first Grammy and it was for arranging. And I believe All five of them plus Ben Brahm were named in the grammy which means all six of them are credited for the arranging.
You know about the origin of Pentatonix, right? About how they won season 3 of _The Sing-Off_ with a first prize of $200,000 and a recording contract? Well, that recording contract was with Epic Records, a minor subsidiary of Sony, who sponsored _The Sing-Off._ So immediately after winning the contract all the members of Pentatonix moved to California in preparation for recording their music, and a week later Epic reneged on the contract, saying that they didn't know how to market a cappella music. But at this point Pentatonix was totally invested in staying together and making a career for themselves doing what they loved best, with the people they loved best. They weren't about to give up just because some short-sighted recording executives said there was no future in their music. So they came up with Plan B. They pooled their winnings, using the $200,000 as seed money. They lived frugally. The men shared two apartments, to cut down on rent. They arranged music and rehearsed every day. And whenever they had a song ready they'd record it on their iPhones and post it to UA-cam. It didn't take long for their fans from _"The Sing-Off"_ to find their channel and subscribe, and even then pentaholics were enthusiastic, so they spread the word around. And some of them became patrons. And Pentatonix started going viral. And someone at Sony sat up and took notice. "Hey, Pentatonix! Here at Sony we've concluded that Epic made a big mistake when they cancelled your contract. But we have another subsidiary, named Madison Gate. Would you be interested in a contract with them?" Hmm 🤔, we might have to think about that, for two seconds or so. Darn right we're interested! It wasn't a terribly good contract; Madison Gate specialized in movie soundtracks, so they couldn't provide Pentatonix with a recording studio, for instance. But they could and did get a company named FifGen Films to record videos for Pentatonix, and they published albums, and albums bring in money. It was a start. Because Pentatonix didn't have a recording studio, they recorded the audio for this in one of their closets that had good acoustics. (Even back then they were recording the audio and video separately. Yes, in most of their official videos they're lip-synching, which just means singing the song in perfect time to the audio they've already recorded.) They had a venue lined up for the video shoot, but it fell through at the last minute. So someone with FifGen got creative and suggested that they buy some black bedsheets and use them to make a sort of photo booth in one of their kitchens. Their budget for this song was around $400, most of which went for makeup (presumably including the contact lenses and the blue tinsel wig), a ring light, and editing. Kevin's eyes were unable to tolerate the contacts, hence the visor. Judging by how red his eyes were Avi must have been having trouble with the contacts as well. "Daft Punk Medley" was released on "PTX Volume II," their second album, in 2013. And in 2015 it won them their first Grammy, in the category Best Arrangement Instrumental or A Cappellla, a category which did not previously exist. It was so obvious that this was Grammy-worthy that the Academy expanded the category Best Instrumental Arrangement to include a cappella just so they could nominate Pentatonix. And then someone at Sony said, "Wait a minute! We got a Grammy from MADISON GATE?! Madison Gate publishes film soundtracks, not Grammy winners! What's going on here?" Eventually they figured it out, and they got in touch with Pentatonix again. "Hey, Pentatonix. Congratulations on the Grammy! We've been thinking some more, and we've concluded that you might find a better fit with our flagship company, RCA. What do you think?" Pentatonix has been with RCA ever since.
@@musikbyjh You're quite welcome. I should add that this Grammy was shared with Ben Bram, as was their second Grammy. Scott met Ben through SoCal VoCals, an award winning amateur a cappella group that Scott joined during his year at the University of Southern California - Ben was a former member of SoCal VoCals who was at that time working as a coach on _The Sing-Off._ This is how Scott first learned about _The Sing-Off_ and got the idea that The Trio (the singing trio Mitch, Kirstin, and Scott had started in high school) could make a career singing a cappella music. When Ben told them that _The Sing-Off_ had a size requirement of at least five members they added Avi at Ben's suggestion and went looking for a beatboxer. And after they won _The Sing-Off_ one of the first things they did was to hire Ben to help with arranging and to edit videos. So Ben is listed as an arranger on most of their music, and since the first two Grammys were for arrangement Ben won as well. Pentatonix has a real knack for attracting quality personnel. Ben is sometimes referred to as "the sixth member of Pentatonix." Their second Grammy was for "Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy" from Tchaikovsky's "Nutcracker Suite," and the third was for their collaboration with Dolly Parton on "Jolene," in the category Best Country Duo/Group Performance. Astonishingly, it was the first time Dolly won a Grammy for "Jolene."
The first time I heard this I was too distracted by the "Meat & Potatoes" (A.K.A. Kevin and Avi) to notice Kirsten but I caught her part in the background the second time I listened. 😅👍
If you really want to experience Avis low note there are a few other songs that really showcase it. For one with pretty good (though not great) audio you should react to "ah ha at Star Vista" (the lead up to the song has Avi doing some classical song to give time to Kevin to go backstage and put his cello away before he returns for the song). It is also a good example of Mitch going off (we normally save the suggestion of this video until reactors have gotten a pretty good amount of reactions under their belts because otherwise it can be a bit overwhelming) but it is one of the better audio examples of Avi going low. Another one is the sing "sing" he has a verse in that where he gets a bit lower then normal. Also the song "Natural Disaster" (he blows out speakers with this one. And I mean that literally) but I have never found any videos of the song with good audio at least not when he really goes low. There are a few with ok audio but he doesn't go as low as normal in them (probably been warned about poor quality speakers at the venue before hand so is trying to avoid blowing out yet another speaker).
Kevin K.O. has been with PTX since the sing off vocal competition show on tv back when Pentatonix was first noticed all over the world thanks to the magic of tv. But Matt is probably the guy you were thinking of,and he replaced Avi and became the new Bass...whereas Kevin beat boxes & sings.😊you REALLY NEED to check.out Kevin's solo cover of Marian Hill's Down....its freaking AWE inspiring and truly unbelievable!! PLEASE react to Down by Kevin....thanks.😊🎶🔥✌
"Around the World" actually gets included twice - both times at the back of the mix: the first is the one you caught, then again in the mass-mash at the end, the phrase gets repeated just once, even lower in the mix. I think it is by Kirsten again, but it is so buried that I'm not 100% sure! The hard panning during the first use of "Around the World" is, I think, a nod to the video in which the dancers are going around a circle, then reversing directions at a few points - giving the appearance of a back-and-forth movement - might not have been intentional, though - it might well just have been because it sounds right 🙂 Like others have said, I appreciate a reaction that brings nuances to light: just listening to the song the saying "that was cool" is unsatisfying to me as a musician - and the engineer's perspective is particularly appreciated as it is a part of overall music production that I am less familiar with! Pause & rewind all you want!
Hi @gradypatterson1948 !!! Pleasure to e-meet you here! Thanks so much for taking time to comment and include your super interesting (and helpful) perspectives on the structure - LOVE talking tech with fellow musicians!!! Didn't catch that second "Around the World" - thank you!!! Appreciate you catching this, thank you again Grady!!!
I've watched this enough times that sometimes I point out to reactors that Kirstie slips in the entire lyrics of "Around the World". As far as looking scary, I don't think this is anyway near as scary as the Daft Punk video of "Technologic".
Welcome!! Panning means movement from one side to another (left to right, front to back , etc). So in this case, you’d hear a sound start on one side / ear and make an audible “movement” to the other ear. Hope this makes sense!
No Kevin has been part of the group from before Sing Off. It's avi that left and matt replaced him. There's been no other group changes, regardless of how different Kirsty and Mitch look in nearly every video. Only matt is "new" but hes now been with the group I think as long or longer than avi was so new isn't true anymore.
Dear Audio and Wifey (or should I say Mr Engineer and Mrs React), never heard Kirstie's trip round the world before, but it took me about 6 years to hear of PTX, so ... .
One thing is to hear it in a headset, but try it on a big HiFi set with speakers covering 20-20.000 Hz and a good dynamic, it will blow your mind. ❤ We tested a new setup with this number in the local Disco, and the DJ pied his pants. 😅 You should have the connections to try it, and don't forget to bring your wife and a camera. 😂❤😂
@@erikdarman591would love to! I had some amazing far field studio monitors for a while (Genelecs)…but once we decided to travel full time, I got rid of most of my studio stuff. Once we settle back down starting this year, I’ll slowly be rebuilding my studio again. I def have some connections to make this happen on a great system. Kirstie: I'm going with blue for everything - eyes, hair, makeup, dress - everything!

We will NEVER complain about Avi's clothing decisions (or lack there of) that day

Find the live performance they do of this. It’s equally awesome. Thanks for the reaction. Great work!
They won a Grammy for this mix, and it was recorded in a Closet and Avi's kitchen with a $400 budget.
I love that one. They did such a fun take on the original.
Mind blown.
Such a great compliment, thank you very much!!
Avi is amazing. You should react to his solo work !
Their Bohemian Rhapsody has to be experienced!
I didn’t even notice all this time
You goo girl🎉
Excellent reaction! Crazy to think this was filmed in Avi and Kevin's apartment. They remain great friends to this day. I look forward to you both reacting to Avi's latest entitled Feel Alright. It was released last Friday. He also released another track entitled Healing which is beautiful. ♥
This won them their first Grammy. Well deserved, too!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
There is a video of them doing this live in what looks like a green room, and its just as impressive
theres a couple more "around the world" at the end by kirstie as well - you have to just keep your eye on her to hear it - its weird ive gone years before i noticed myself
Matt is the new Bass. Kevin's been around the whole time.
I have heard this so many times, seen SO many reactions on it. Your pointing out All Around the World part is the first time I noticed it as well. She also did it again near the end when all the squares were bouncing around!
Great catch!!!!
The jukebox at work has One More Time on it so I play it twice a day
but I always hear Mitchs' reprisal from the second half of this performance. it's so good
Matt is the newest member and Kevin is the beat boxer cellist and wonderful singer.
ok, MAJOR props for the pan during your reaction!
Hey, thank you!! Think you are the first that caught this! ✌🏽
Yes, please!
You bet, but it won't come out until March. Our Feb calendar is booked. We need to do better finding out about certain song releases in advance so we get them out more timely. I'm (Jillian) on it, but any suggestions always welcomed!
Whoa! I never noticed Kirstin saying that until you mentioned it and now I hear it every time she says it lol. So cool!
I didn't hear Kirstin's "Around the World" either and I've heard this hundreds of times. Thank you for pointing it out.
I suggest y'all check out Aha live in Singapore!!
Hallelujah the live Christmas version is wow ❤
A lot of my playlist changes with the wind, but this is permanently on it. I just wanted it to be more like a half hour long!
If you want a good few Mitch slap songs here is a couple. "Sing", "Can't Hold Us", "Come Along", "Sound of Silence".
One of my favorite Avi and Kevin combo was on their original song " love again "
If you love Avi’s lower register check out his latest song called “Feel Alright” that was released on Friday.❤
great video
You need to watch the Sing Off season 3 episodes that featured Pentatonix.
Have you seen the cover of THIS (Pentatonix's) arrangement by Pomplamoose? Only one voice, but they use a room full of instruments...
No, but sounds amazing. Thank you for the suggestion!
I noticed around the world early on, but I missed it in final mashup at the end when Mitch was doing it until it was pointed out by another reactor.
I have some extra tickets to their show on August 31, (my birthday)....would love to take yall.
Oh.
We didn't know that about the accident, thank you for sharing. We LOVE the smile ;-)
A couple of my favorite covers by PTX are Shallow, and Perfect, and their amazing mashup of Butter X Dynamite by BTS
you want a challenge?
It's fun to listen to the song 5 times focusing on each. Kevin is the one I'm most impressed with on this song.
Congrats on finding Mamma K in the mix!
Ben Bram 🙂 (no "h")
What's going on here?"
Eventually they figured it out, and they got in touch with Pentatonix again.
"Hey, Pentatonix. Congratulations on the Grammy! We've been thinking some more, and we've concluded that you might find a better fit with our flagship company, RCA. What do you think?" Pentatonix has been with RCA ever since.
Thank you for all this great info !!
Ben is sometimes referred to as "the sixth member of Pentatonix."
Their second Grammy was for "Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy" from Tchaikovsky's "Nutcracker Suite," and the third was for their collaboration with Dolly Parton on "Jolene," in the category Best Country Duo/Group Performance. Astonishingly, it was the first time Dolly won a Grammy for "Jolene."
The first time I heard this I was too distracted by the "Meat & Potatoes" (A.K.A. Kevin and Avi) to notice Kirsten but I caught her part in the background the second time I listened. 😅👍
Good reac❤❤tion
PLEASE react to Down by Kevin....thanks.😊🎶🔥✌
the song love again's got avi's low bass. i recommend reacting to that. it's an original song too :D
Thanks so much! We'll add to our Avi list!
Recommend their 90s Dance Medley.
"Around the World" actually gets included twice - both times at the back of the mix: the first is the one you caught, then again in the mass-mash at the end, the phrase gets repeated just once, even lower in the mix. I think it is by Kirsten again, but it is so buried that I'm not 100% sure! The hard panning during the first use of "Around the World" is, I think, a nod to the video in which the dancers are going around a circle, then reversing directions at a few points - giving the appearance of a back-and-forth movement - might not have been intentional, though - it might well just have been because it sounds right 🙂
Like others have said, I appreciate a reaction that brings nuances to light: just listening to the song the saying "that was cool" is unsatisfying to me as a musician - and the engineer's perspective is particularly appreciated as it is a part of overall music production that I am less familiar with!
I can't promise EVERY reaction is infused with these nuggets (often based on the song / artist), but we definitely try and add value to every video. Appreciate you catching this, thank you again Grady!!!
Kevin is the best boxer ,, and he and Avi were added to the group so they could enter the Sing-off.
Try ptx privat live performance of darft punk no mic. Recordet by mobil phone. That is amacing
Kevin's an original member - he's the beatboxer. It was Matt who replaced Avi.
And another reactor noted that sung live is exactly like the studio version
I'm surprised not one reaction has not addressed the way Mitchell moves his tongue on (celebrate)
I've watched this enough times that sometimes I point out to reactors that Kirstie slips in the entire lyrics of "Around the World". As far as looking scary, I don't think this is anyway near as scary as the Daft Punk video of "Technologic".
Avi voice is so cool and amazing. I know this is an older video but I’m jw what does panning mean?
Welcome!! Panning means movement from one side to another (left to right, front to back , etc). So in this case, you’d hear a sound start on one side / ear and make an audible “movement” to the other ear. Hope this makes sense!
@@musikbyjh lol I should have known that from panning camera setting
No Kevin has been part of the group from before Sing Off. It's avi that left and matt replaced him. There's been no other group changes, regardless of how different Kirsty and Mitch look in nearly every video. Only matt is "new" but hes now been with the group I think as long or longer than avi was so new isn't true anymore.
Dear Audio and Wifey (or should I say Mr Engineer and Mrs React), never heard Kirstie's trip round the world before, but it took me about 6 years to hear of PTX, so ... .
Excellent!! And welcome!!!
One thing is to hear it in a headset, but try it on a big HiFi set with speakers covering 20-20.000 Hz and a good dynamic, it will blow your mind. ❤
We tested a new setup with this number in the local Disco, and the DJ pied his pants. 😅
You should have the connections to try it, and don't forget to bring your wife and a camera. 😂❤😂
Love it!! Must hear asap!!
@@musikbyjh And let us hear your reaction.
We’ll see if we can set up a reaction for it. My old band got to perform on Metallica’s touring PA system, in the audio engineering school I went to….they do this every so often. Next time they bring in a mega PA, I’ll see if we can get in there for a session.
Kevin was there from the beginning, Matt took over for Avi.
I second the recommendation of "Wizard of Ahhhs"; it's fantastic. But I would caution you that it won't make sense if you haven't seen _"The Wizard of Oz,"_ the 1939 movie starring Judy Garland, so take care of that first.
That was Matt
PSA...There were no musical instruments harmed in the making of this video.
lol!
Kevin is the beat boxer.
UMMMM, I was today years old when I heard Kirstie do "around the world". I swear I've seen this video thousands of times and seen people react to this video hundreds of times over the past 8 or 9 years. how tf did I not hear that? wowww. i guess I'm a fake fan. lol jk
Right?!? Where did THAT come from??? Jeremy felt the same, you aren't alone!! Hope to see you back!
Ps: she dkes the around the world thing again near the end too. 😉
The fact that this was their first song, and they made it with about 53$ in a closet in Avi’s mom’s trailer… with only time enough for one day of takes… dang
So impressive 🥰❤️🥷
@@musikbyjh right? And they have just continued to stay awesome and grow even further as the years have gone by.
Matt replaced Avi. Kevin was on the Singoff. Avi is the only original that is no longer with the group.
