The original of this song got me through a lot of dark places especially when I was a teenager. The NIN version is raw and sharp pain. Self loathing and despair. Johnny Cash's cover is the ache of a hard life and old wounds. Resignation for the life lived and faithful hope in the afterlife. Both are stunning. 💙
THIS! This right here! Remember the original and how it much it moved me then when this version came out, blown. away. Makes me nearly tear up every time hearing it knowing the hell (mostly of his own doing) he'd been through and he managed to make out the other side. In that song he was now at peace and had accepted his fate. RIP 😭 (Not really a country fan, just #respect)
"The NIN version is raw and sharp pain. Self loathing and despair. Johnny Cash's cover is the ache of a hard life and old wounds." Shaena Mason that was so perfectly stated, I've nothing to add, except I totally agree.
I agree. But it is also a testament to the pain in his voice of the Johnny Cash version that takes it home. Even Trent Reznor has stated that he wrote the song, but hearing Cash sing it, he no longer feels he owns it. That is a powerful statement in itself.
His wife died shortly after they filmed it, he died shortly after it was released. Everything surrounding the selection of this song by Rick Ruben, and Cash embracing the song was perfect.
Cash is a legend. There's a few songs you could do but "God will cut you down" is a video you should watch. Produced after his death. It's pretty epic.
Dude I thought that song was old but he released it in 2006?Not even fair, how does he released some of his best songs at the end of a 50 year career? Most people fade away after 20,lol.
What always makes me cry watching this is the look of absolute sorrow in June's eyes as she stands watching him during this in their home/museum that is crumbling around them. Adding in the fact that she died a month and he died 3 months after filming it just makes this song so much more poetic, and completely changes the meaning from the original 9 Inch Nails version. It's no longer just about hurting your self and those around you with your drug use. But a man who battled that through out his life sitting at the end of it all, as everything he built in his life is literal crumbling into dust and disrepair and wishing he could change all he regrets. His wishes after death also adds to it since he wanted his home and museum bulldozed, so all that was left was a literal "empire of dirt".
Bob Dylan wrote and composed All along but there are more than one cover and one was made by U2 and it sounds fine for me. Hallelujah was covered to many times since Jeff Buckey sung the 1st cover.
Dope reaction you deserve a million subs most channels on youtube just be trying to get views but I can tell you really love music and feel what they saying.
Just subscribed, I really appreciate your genuine reaction to the songs. I like this guy, he's real, and you can see it on his face, with the conviction of emotion during and after the songs that hit home for him. Bravo !
It's interesting that you describe this as "the realist form of music," because that was exactly what producer Rick Rubin was going for. Johnny had been fired by RCA records (I know, right? Why?) and Rick Rubin, who produced metal records, wanted to produce this album for him. He took Johnny out of his comfort zone and forced him to make songs with just his voice and his guitar. This is the result.
RCA let Cash go because of his age and health. They didn't think that they could get another album out of him and have any real 'quality' to it. So, Rubin came up with the idea of Cash singing one of Nine Inch Nails songs that could take advantage of the slower pace and 'shaky voice' of Cash at the time because of just the lyrics. Result.... Instant Classic and RCA left with a huge shit-sandwich to eat because of it as the song took off on the charts.
Just a correction: Rubin was primarily a rap & hip hop producer. He came up in the New York hip hop scene, with LL Cool J and Run DMC and the Beastie Boys, and founded Def Jam records. Slayer was his only really big name metal act.
It's sad but beautiful. One of the best songs ever made. Need to listen to the original to give it some respect i think. It's really Cash's song now tho
The part that hits me the most, is the very end. When he closes the lid on his piano, and wipes it down. It's as if he knew his time was short, and he was saying his goodbyes to a cherished friend.
Lead singer for NIN who wrote this song to this day, says Johnnys cover blew his original song out of the water. Doesn’t matter what genre you sing as an artist from Hip Hop to Folk, Rock to New Wave...everyone knew and respected Cash. You gotta really do something special for that to happen. “ Hero’s get remembered, but legends never die”
I love watching reactions to this song. You can see people's humanity exposed in their eyes as they watch. So raw, so real and so hauntingly beautiful. Timeless.
This song deals with addiction. Anyone that's been addicted to anything, or knows someone that's an addict, knows first hand what this song is about. Then you hear Johnny Cash's voice and know what he went through as an addict himself, it just puts it in your face... Brings me to tears every time I hear this song by him.
Trent Reznor (lead vocalist of NIN) talked about how this cover was really well done. Johnny had his demons and he spent the vast majority of his life battling them, most of the time losing. His addiction to heroin was tearing his life apart and yet his wife stood by him and when she passed I think Johnny was terrified to be alone with his demons and his heart couldn’t take it. It’s one of those sad stories man. Thanks for sharing this.
I could see how moved you were by it and I feel ya bro it is the realest form of music. It's life, we all see Loved ones pass on and if I'm not mistaken he died not too long after this was made and only about a year after the Love of his life passed away June Carter Cash. It was a remake from a NIN song but imo Johnny's just tore at your soul so much more than the original and that was Amazing in its own right but I just liked this version better. An older man, who didn't always make the right choices in life and hurt the ones he loved really taking a look back at his life.
Rip to one of the greatest. I love the diversity of music on this channel. Johnny cash, Joyner, em, tool. It’s amazing. this channel will explode if this guys set up doesn’t change.
Johnny Cash was the definition of rock'roll and one of the most honorable icons there's ever been to find. At the end of this video, when he close the piano lid and gently strokes his hands over it, is for me one of the sadest and heartbreaking scenes in the history of music. That moment was the end of his career and his life - and he knew it. I cry every time I see it. God I miss him!
This is the truth from a mega legend. There was only 1 Cash. Never will be another like him. I've watched interviews and he didn't try and hide shit. It was sad when he said " I expect my life to end real soon". Thanks for doing Cash.
Originally wrote by Nine inch Nails when Trent was in rehab for drug addiction. He didn't really want Cash to cover it even when he heard the song but when he saw the video he said it was Johnnie's song now, who also had addiction problems.
Holy shit could you be more wrong? Reznor was not in rehab, he was alone in the Tate Murder house diving deeper into alcoholism. Hurt is a epilogue to a story he wrote called The Downward Spiral.
Johnny Cash is hands down one of the most influential, real, raw, gritty, artists of all time. His life, his demons, his love, his joys, and his losses shape and mold every emotion we experience by hearing his art. It’s as if everything he does is deeply etched with the coalescence of all that is him. I encourage you to read about him and to listen to more of his work. His later covers were brilliant (see Soundgarden’s Rusty Cage) and the melange of american folk, country, raw poetry, and rock and roll that is his original music - extraordinary. No other word. ❤️❤️ Peace.
This song came on at the end of a movie about two weeks after my mom died. It absolutely wrecked me. I can't remember music ever breaking me as much as this song did. And still does. It's amazing in every way.
I really appreciate you. Out of all the reaction channels, you dive in and accept and analyze the music for what it is, regardless of genre. You are the ONE reaction person I would love to hang out with, have a few beers, and discuss music.
The saddest part about that song is to think about all the pain he put into that song. The dude died shortly after releasing the last songs of his career, knowing that this song was going to be one of his most known in recent years. Even if it was a cover to another bands song, he did this with full emotion and the cuts of video really set the mood. I like this song knowing the backstory more than just the song stand alone because I prefer the original. Still an awesome song from a prolific and memorable singer.
I absolutely love this Cash version. As I'm sure others have said, please watch the original Nine Inch Nails version. They're totally different, but they share the same heart. Thanks for this.
I’m 100% hiphop but this song always gets me in my feelings. True talent, pure emotion, genius. I swear if the buildup was 15 sec longer I would be in tears😅
I have been an admirer of The Man in Black since I was a little girl. He had a tumultuous life. A hard life filled with pain and addiction. His wife June Carter Cash meant everything to him. His daughter once told him that this song sounded like he was saying goodbye. His reply..."I am"
You ever listen to a song that makes you stop what you're doing? You sit and close your eyes and just feel it. I have listened to both versions of this song countless times and everytime...... Its like I feel leaden and exhausted in a way that can't be fixed by sleep, but also something close to peaceful all at once. Maybe I'm odd, but that is my measure of good music. And both versions of this song always deliver.
Lyrics are so poignant.I think after J.C. lost June Carter Cash,a part of him died, and this song reflect on his mortality... Strong stuff. Rest in peace,Johnny & June. May your souls always be intertwined...❤
Trent actually gifted/credited the song to Johnny when he saw this video. he saw how it just fit Johnnys reflection on his regrets at the twighlight of his life and Trent said the song became about Johnny and no longer about him.
Johnny Cash has sung virtually every style of music known to mankind. I was blasted for suggesting he wanted a few more rock style music songs.. He can do it all, let him
Johnny Cash recorded this song Several months before he Passed. June Cash, Johnnys Wife of 35+ years passed before him....and Johnny, Like So many of us MEN, Basically died of a broken Heart! Johnny knocked this Song/Video Outta the Park!Trent Rezner said as Much! This just goes to show how Great Musicians/ Artists can cross to other music styles and do it with ease! The Fact that this Song & Video Moved you in the way it did just goes to show that you, SIR...Actually have a Heart AND a Soul!
Years ago when he passed. A certain company went to Rosanna and asked to license Ring of Fire. She correctly told them to go to hell. I won't name them because you will then for the rest of your life picture that when you hear "But it burns burns burns the ring of fire" and I wouldn't wish that on anyone.
Johnny cash aka The Man in Black, legend and my all time fave country singer, he died shortly after this video of a broken heart he just missed his wife June Carter so much they have made some great music together ' Jackson' being one of them . Great reaction video Preston 👍👍👍 beautiful but such a sad song 😢
Every song from his six album release with legendary producer Rick Rubin on American Recordings is a masterpiece. Hurt is just one of many. This video is one of the best music videos I have ever seen.
The first time I ever heard this song I cried. 15 years ago and I still can't watch this video without crying. Trent Reznor found the perfect words and Johnny Cash found the perfect beat. Mark Romanek did a phenomenal job with directing. And Rick Rubin produced it. This song was destiny. Snoop Dogg even dedicated an album to him. Legit look it up.
Wow! I just suggested you check out a Nine Inch Nails song, Wish, on your Perfect Circle reaction and you react to a NIN cover same day. Great reaction.
Been watching reactions to this song tonight cause I'm down the youtube rabbit hole. And it's somewhat amusing to see all these reaction people with happy thoughts and intros before listneing to this song, then crying after. This song is one of the all time greatest and most bittersweet songs. It is one you will never forget once you listen to it.
I heard both versions of the song when they were released on the air years apart. I am a huge NIN fan and have always respected Johnny Cash. Him doing a cover of this song and putting so much of himself into it was just incredible. He sings it from a different place than Trent does and the fact that this song held so much in common between these two artists that are so different and yet so similar is a credit to both musicians. The JC version of it always gets me misty, and I love both versions.
life is pain but its how you deal with that pain and how care for your loved ones that count, each moment of love and happiness must be treasured always
Thank you for understanding music and being such a genuine person. I've been listening to Cash since the 90's and I love seeing people get introduced to his music. Your reactions are real and it makes me happy to see others appreciate it
It is ok to cry when you listen to Cash. he is that good.
i did lol
True that

Yup.
For sure.
The original of this song got me through a lot of dark places especially when I was a teenager. The NIN version is raw and sharp pain. Self loathing and despair. Sad to think how he died so soon after recording this...this was basically his last hurrah in life.
He recorded this because he new he was dying.
His wife died shortly after they filmed it, he died shortly after it was released. Everything surrounding the selection of this song by Rick Ruben, and Cash embracing the song was perfect.
It was his last time on camera.
I don't think it's sad. The video was sad. But his life was not. How many of us will get to take our final bow with the world for an audience?
@@rodneysmith9177 that’s a valid point

*Songs that don’t feel like covers*
• All Along The Watchtower - Jimi Hendrix
• Hallelujah - Jeff Buckley
• This...
The Ghost of Tom Joad, Rage against the machine
The Metro - System of a down, Alkaline Trio
House of rising sun by the animals is a cover.
Bob Dylan wrote and composed All along but there are more than one cover and one was made by U2 and it sounds fine for me. Hallelujah was covered to many times since Jeff Buckey sung the 1st cover.
The Man Who Sold The World - Nirvana
Deep song. Originally done by Nine Inch Nails, but this is a rare occasion where a cover crushes the original. He put so much heart into this.
Come back and comment again when you're sober. It's a fantastic cover, but crushes? pffft
Even Trent agrees with that
"Wow. [I felt like] I just lost my girlfriend, because that song isn't mine anymore" - Trent Reznor
Crushes??? Lol stop with that, both version are amazing and have a different meaning and different story so...shut up
Another cover that (in my opinion) crushes the original is led zepplins No quarter covered by tool

It's originally a Nine Inch Nails song - you should check that out too.
Preston next time do Johnny Cash Ring of Fire please
Stirs up so many emotions. I think alot of people can resonate with this song.
Everything Johnny Cash touched became gospel music. An amazing man.
You need to hear the original next from "Nine Inch Nails"
Bro PLEEAASSE do some Rage Against the Machine reactions! Gotta start with “Down Rodeo” or Bulls on Parade” you won’t regret it!
WWE used this song in a video package when Eddie Guerrero passed away
Steven Nguyen yes!!!
Was perfect for Eddie
Hey bud, you wanna hear Cash in his prime? Listen to Cocaine Blues. You’ll be surprised a song like that existed so long ago.
life is pain but its how you deal with that pain and how care for your loved ones that count, each moment of love and happiness must be treasured always
Thank you for understanding music and being such a genuine person. I've been listening to Cash since the 90's and I love seeing people get introduced to his music. Your reactions are real and it makes me happy to see others appreciate it
