The song was recorded in 2002 and the video was released in Feb or Mar 2003. Johnny Cash died in September 2003 and his wife, June Cash died in May 2003. Interesting that Trent Reznor, after seeing the video stated it wasn't his song anymore.

Showing the old clips establishes the emotion to anyone that doesn't know his history. But knowing his personal history, the words are just gut wrenching. His struggles with substances, his feelings of not being good enough, the way the record company treated him late in life makes the words more poignant. I am so glad he did this though. He was always stretching his music muscles and seeing what he could do. He didn't care what the genre, music was music and had no boundaries. That's why he's a legend.

"hurt" by johnny cash is the reflection of his own life. he struggled throughout his life with addiction to drugs and alcohol. the picture of the older lady is his mother. the lady standing behind him was his wife june. the song is about looking for forgiveness from those he hurt and realizing that life is not about collecting possessions but relationships and not taking them for granted.... complex visions of his crumbling museum, his childhood home, cracked dusty awards mixed family images and the crucifixion of Christ show a simple man searching for salvation as he is nearing death. the piano does appear to represent a coffin and he supposedly never opened it again after the last take. its one of the most powerful videos ever done and can bring the most ruthless of men to tears. his wife died shortly after the video and he died 8 months later... even the museum burnt down to the ground a few years later during a renovation project

It also sort of prophetic when he sings the line, "everyone I love, goes away in the end" because this was filmed not to long before his wife June Carter Cash who appears with him in the video then passed on, again leaving Johnny alone in the end, and he passed just 4 months later in 2003. The lake house which they appear in which had been their home before they turned it into a recording studio also subsequently burned during later renovations. Him closing the piano at the end of video really does feel like Johnny closing the casket on his life and career.

In his singing career Cash was authentic all the time. And here he's very authentic I believe. Johnny Cash has become an icon.
Not so much in his life. He made some big mistakes and is showing his deep regret. Not judging but anyone who knows his story knows he was a complex and tragic man at times. What he gave us in his music probably tips the scale to the good. So many who hit it really big have really BIG struggles.

It was the closing of the piano key cover, like a casket, that did me in. Fantastic rendition.
There are a few covers that take an original to another plane
    Hendrix "Watchtower" from Dylan
Sinead "Nothing Compares to U" from Prince
But Johnny's voice and story telling, signalling to us this is goodbye, is something truly unique, touching, and perhaps comforting. So good.

Johnny Cash used this song about regret for past mistakes in life and material things & fame mean nothing in the end. When the video was filmed in February 2003, Cash was 71 years old & had serious health problems. His frailty is clearly evident in the video. He died seven months later, on September 12 & his wife, June Carter Cash, who is shown gazing at her husband in two sequences of the video, had died on May 15 of the same year.

I love it when channels mention other channels, especially ones I watch, and I just watched one of those an hour before watching yours -- and one of the men from Pakistan was indeed brought to tears. It's quite the message, isn't it? Johnny Cash had pretty much seen it all and done it all. He either already had or could have anything material in this world he wanted. But as he felt the end approaching, he counted it all as dirt. At the end, he had the same pain and regrets as the rest of us.
I have no idea if this was intentional or not, but it occurred me that the pounding piano, and the way it gets louder at the end, are like the seconds of your life. When you're young, you're not really aware of the seconds ticking by. They soft and in the background. But as you get older, the ticking gets a bit louder and you're more aware of it. When you near the end, those seconds ticking by become very loud to the point at the vey end it's all you're aware of. But regardless of how loud they are or you're awareness, the seconds tick by....and then stop...and there's not a thing you can do to stop it.

Trent's version of Hurt is dealing with the ramifications of drug use from a young man's eyes.
Johnny's version of Hurt is that same man, at the end of his life, reflecting on everything. He realizes that everything that happened is what made him who he ended up being, and that he wouldn't change a thing in his life, even if he could. He realizes that is his real legacy that he is leaving to pass on for those who come after him. A story of pain, suffering, loss, trials, tribulations, and a strength to overcome it all with love from his loved ones.

@@p.j.morrisyeah, there are lots of “humans” that seem to think that it’s ok to say the things they say. It’s unfortunate that people feel the need to be so terrible. But, that’s the world we live in. Luckily, there are many good people we get to interact with, most of which aren’t like this.
