As of today, our blog has 250 published posts. And according to Ahrefs’ Content Explorer, 61 pages have been republished at least once.
If you look at the traffic trends over the past 3 years, you’ll see that nearly all of our republished pages have consistently been gaining more and more search traffic over time.
So, republishing blog posts works really well as both an SEO and content marketing strategy.
But when you update content, you can’t just recreate any old page and expect to get a quick boost in organic traffic. There are some requirements in page selection and you actually need to update the content with some thought.
Plus, your website should follow at least the basic SEO best practices.
So you should have good content, a technically sound website, and have some kind of website authority; meaning, you’re not a new site or have no links pointing at any of your pages.
If your site matches this criterion, then you can get started with the first step, which is to diagnose pages where your content is responsible for underperformance.
Content is obviously a huge contributor to your ranking success. But it’s not always going to be the main reason why you’re not ranking in the top 3 positions.
So the first thing we need to do is actually identify that a content issue exists. And there are 4 main things to look out for.
You’ll learn what these 4 things are in the video.
Once you’ve identified a page to update, then it’s time to rewrite it. This requires a bit of research and decision making.
The first thing you’ll want to do is assess search intent and make sure your page matches it.
You’ll learn how to do this in the tutorial.
The next thing you need to do is analyze the top ranking relevant pages.
Since we’ve already pinpointed that we have a content issue rather than a backlinks or technical related one, we need to see what the top ranking pages are doing right.
So this would require you to manually visit the pages and analyze key points that are being made.
You’ll learn how to do this and which points you should be looking for in other blog posts.
The last step is to republish your post and make sure Google finds and indexes your new page. You’ll also learn how to do this in the video.
Finally, you should do a content audit of your site to see which pages could benefit from a full-blown update.

You're welcome!
Very informative tutorial, really made my day. Loved it.
Glad you liked it!
Loved It!
Thanks!
This was incredibly helpful. I've never been sure whether to just hit update or republish on the specific date. All of these tips have been very helpful thank you so much for providing such great content 🙏
Great to hear, and you're welcome!
is it okay to change publish date when we update the content?
@nabilnawaz9332 In some cases, your older articles will need a few small changes to stay fresh which means you'll just need to update them without republishing. But if you're making significant changes, it makes perfect sense to republish and then promote the article to get more eyeballs on it.
Thank you, sir, it's just awesome
You're welcome!
Wow, I'm impressed by the insight from the video. I'm wondering why some blogs are getting so much traffic from search engines while I'm trying so hard but am not getting rank at all.. this might be the answer.. Thanks for the great tips
There are lots of ranking factors. Take care of most important ones first, then look for secondary things that you can improve.

Basic and essential material for any marketing professional.

Should I change published date even though my theme has updated date option
I have a very important question.
Why isn't Sam spinning his finger for the intro anymore?
After spinning it for so many videos, his arm got tired 😂
- SQ
😂😂😂
I'm curious why you chose to update the 'published date' in wordpress? Wouldn't it be better to leave the 'published date' untouched and work with the 'dateModified' ?
I guess you refer to Date Modified within sitemap to help crawlers with prioritization. In our case we do not really need that. Firstly, we around a thousand indexed pages, so crawlers do not need help with prioritization in our case. Secondly, changes in WP are applied on the website right away.
- Max
Ran into issues following the video. Once you change the date on the wordpress, the "Update" button change to "Schedule". Notice you did not click on the "Schedule" button. So I followed similarly. Now my update page does not have any date! Even tried inurl and no date can be found! Tried to search page with the year and nothing found! Is it because I did not click the "Schedule" button? Google Search still find my page though but only if time is set to "anytime".
Hi Sam,
Thanks for the video.
Is Published Date change same as Updated On Date?
Or changing the Published On Date is more important than Updated On Date for Google?
Currently, Google shows my Updated on Date as I don't change the Published On Date.
Please clarify.
Best.
These are variables which could be coded/implemented differently in each WP theme.
- Max
This was super helpful. I do have a question: Should you update the URL of the updated post?
Generally, no. That would actually cause harm as the updated url would be a fresh page w/o rank. To regain ranking the old url would have to be redirecting (301) to the new one, and it would take time.
No. Avoid this as a general rule.
Skyler is right. You should keep the same URL
- Max
@@skylerreeves i have a post, it includes 'version number' in the URL, not the version is changed for the product, in post content I am using the updated version number but in URL its same the old version, should I change the URL (for completely removing numbers from the URL)? or leave it as it is even the versions are different in URL and in page content?
Hey Sam.
Hope you are safe and well.
Can you please tell how to index the redirect pages on Google.
My both pages are ranking.
Thanks
Once Google recrawl a link with redirect - it should be deindexed.
- Max
If the content missed the mark, and some of that relates to the URL, when you're updating the published date, would you change the URL also (and update 301's etc).
Should a permalink be changed when updating date, or better to leave alone?
You republish the same content with some fresh insights. I see no point to have a new URL here, as Google already index this page.
- Max
Great tutorial Sam. But I'm little confused about why not ahref give certificates for such premium education, as your competitors are already doing it..
Ahmad, so far we did not find too much value in certificate creation. So we focused on other activities which brings more ROI. For now, we got some extra time to work on a new course which will come along with certification. We expect it to be available by the end of this year;)

You have reached the monthly limit for the SEO toolbar.
How many times in a month can I use ahref toolbar?
It depends on your monthly subscription. Each subscription plan has its own limits.

Superb...
But when we can get the video on Affiliate Marketing from scratch as you promise on past affiliate video ? ...affiliate marketing website #affiliatemarketing
No promised date, but we're working on it 🙂
- SQ
@@AhrefsCom ok.. Brother... We all love you and your content too.
After making changes in the old blog, is it okay to submit it again in the console? Will it drop down the rank?
It's fine.
- SQ
In my search console of queries section only 2 blog post keywords shows but I have written many posts. Do you have any article or videos on how to improve queries on keywords on Google search console.

Thanks, You're the best.
Where is my favorite "stay tune" with pointing hand along with circling finger, introducing the opening ???
Some content refresh took place =P
- Max
@@AhrefsCom nice one... it took me 1 day to understand the joke lol
is it okay to change published date to the current date? when the theme has a setting to show modified date in the SERPs?
Good question!
Each theme may have different settings and ways on how certain values are used. So this will vary from case to case.
- Max
@@AhrefsCom do you mean if the modified date updates and shows in serps after the page is reindexed, then we dont need to change the Published date?
What republished means? Changing your publish date and edit them a bit?
Watch the video. We explain 🙂
- SQ
I just update the post, then ask Google to index. Works fine. Is reposting to present date better?
It tells Google the page has some fresh content, so updating a date is a good idea.
- Max
@@AhrefsCom sir, i also have a question regarding PublishedDate and ModifiedDate, my posts show modifiedDate in the SERP results, should I change the published date in this case as well? i frequently update my posts!!
So I have a blog post which has the keyword *php 7 if shorthand* ranked at 6th page.. now when I see top 10 results and their back links at moz then saw that it has 146 inbound links/backlinks. So to outrank that page we need more backlinks than that?
First of all, You use only ehref, Because this tool is no1 in the world
It's not just a matter of backlinks. It could be a variety of factors: search intent, etc. 🙂
- SQ
After rewriting a blog post, is it advisable to edit the url to reflect the reflect the news heading?
Rewriting the URL may affect your current rankings so it depends on your goals.
-Helen
@@AhrefsCom does editing the date of publication to reflect the date of re-writing the content also affect current rankings
Hey Sam
Can you Please tell me some ways to reduce the bounce rate on my website.
My content is best out there.
The best part.
My average view time is also good.
And I have done internal linking as well.
But still facing this problem.
Let me know if you can help to fix it up.
Thanks
You need to analyze user behavior on your website in order to find reasons why they leave your site. Not much I can suggest here, as this is not we specialize on.
- Max
Hello sir, My one keyword was ranking on top three but not a traffic potential keyword so I changed with another keyword with low KD and having good backlinks. But is not ranking now and observing for one month.
Create backlinks only your post URL, Your post will be ranked with every keywords
Depending on the keyword, one month is pretty short. Continue observing and running small experiments on that page 🙂
- SQ
If I go for older blog post to update so should I indexed my already index blog post after update ? Or it is already update after update old page please help ? Or some say?😢
It depends on whether you unpublished or deleted your previous post. You can ask Google to index your new post anyway :)
-Helen
@@AhrefsCom i am not unpublished it or deleted it, just update do after again go for the reindexed that is already index my post ??
