Keyword Difficulty is a numerical representation of how hard it’ll be to rank in Google for a search query.
But as a standalone metric, it can be misleading. How can a 1 to 3 digit number truly quantify how hard it’ll be to rank in Google?
Google uses hundreds of ranking signals, some that they’ve confirmed, some that have been “verified” through third party studies, and then there are ones that SEOs have concluded based on experience, observation or gut feelings.
To expect a third party with zero association with Google to somehow decrypt 200 some-odd signals and compute an “accurate” metric is unrealistic, or maybe impossible.
Afterall, most of these so-called “ranking factors,” are speculation and there are others that can’t even be looked at independently. And for that reason, you’ll notice that keyword difficulty will differ depending on the keyword research tool you’re using.
But despite its shortcomings, it’s actually a super insightful metric if you understand how it works and how Google chooses which pages to rank.
So, how does Ahrefs calculate Keyword Difficulty?
Simply put, we take a weighted average of the number of referring domains pointing at the top 10 pages.
So this means that if a keyword has a high KD, then the ranking pages likely have lots of links pointing at them. In contrast, low KD scores tell us that the top ranking pages don’t have many links.
Since ranking for keywords usually rely on backlinks, KD acts as a good proxy to ranking difficulty. But there are other factors we have to consider.
You’ll learn what these factors are and how to manually assess the search engine result pages (SERPs) for them.
While KD as a standalone metric is far from perfect, there’s actually a ton of utility you can get from it when you use it based on your understanding of the metric.

Well Last year I started my journey with Ahrefs and your Videos . I just want to thank you for teaching everything. I was a fresher in the world of Seo and I have learned alot from your techniques and implemented them, just want to tell you that I was able to rank in top 10 results in less than 3 months on a fresh domain, and after 6 months I was getting around 50k Users Per day, earning around 1200 USD per month from the website. Sam, thanks for having the time to create this amazing video. I know its old and many other factors may be added and changed, but the question that i had for months if not years has been answered. Honestly i was really confused when seeing an article in top 10 with a low PA (below 20) but with an high DA (+60/70) that normally made me to quit. And that may not be the case, specially when i create mainly informational articles.

I was just having this question today. Which tool has the most accurate Keyword Difficulty score? I guess no one, haha. As you said, you need to pick one tool, learn how its Keyword Difficulty score is calculated, and then do your research keeping those points in mind. But because no other tool apparently has shared how they calculate their Keyword Difficulty scores, I'll stick with you guys.

I am not sure I understand your question. If you find some big players ranking on top for a specific keyword with a page that has pretty strong backlink profile, your chances to ourtrank that page might be not that good. Not much I can tell having the info you shared.

I'm using ahrefs from 9month's and results are insane. If you have 0DR site you definately outrank 90DR. Yes! With 0KD keywords,you will definately succeed.

Re: I have two websites on same shared host. Both 1 year old with 100+articles. I have never seen more than 300 visitor/day on any of my website.
All the articles are long with supported multimedia.
All the articles written with help of ahref tool itself.
ON SAME RANDOM DAY THERE ARE HIGHER TRAFFIC ON BOTH WEBSITE BUT NEXT DAY IT WILL DROP FOR BOTH WEBSITES.

This question is too difficult to answer without proper context, data or analytics. For example, you could have gotten a spike in traffic because of social shares. Or you might not be getting traffic because you aren't promoting it or building links.
I'll encourage you to watch a few of our videos and start testing them out on your site.

@@AhrefsCom I wanted to know just because whenever I do the keyword research using Ahrefs and then I do research same keyword on the Google keyword planner but I get always different volume, competition of keyword..
My ubersuggest is getting similar results as Tool #3 lol

Why doesn't AHREFS create a new filter that filters keywords based on intent? It's so time consuming checking the serps on each and every keyword.

Ahref KD doesn't account for DR or "search intent"...so Ahref's KD tool is hot garbage. Only relying on RD to determine KD is ignorant.
Sadly, nope. At the very least, not consistently reliable.Any reason you don't take DR and UR into account when determining KD? This is often the biggest misleading factor. Oh, an easy KW to rank... nope. :D It's hard to determine the relation of high DR vs low UR.
As mentioned in the video, KD/DR are relative to the website you're working on. Manual review is a prerequisite and something I strongly recommend for any keyword you wish to target.

I understand, my question was more toward how you determine the "actual" KD when you see for instance a lot of high DR domains ranking without many links, but the pages they rank for have relatively low UR. If the SERP is full of 60+ DRs, but the ranking pages have 10-25 UR and not many links, or none at all, do you consider that something you can compete against?
