    Okay, very productive good looking machines.
    But in 1990 at 13 years old, I drove an F2 gleaner harvesting dryland wheat in eastern New Mexico. Heaven!
    What an exciting afternoon!
    Went on to operate many 9600 John Deere’s and even own one, but nothing was like that first short experience on that Gleaner. It was small- my dad used to have an L2- but I didn’t care. I was running a combine!

    We used to use 9500 JD's and I thought they were big back in the early 90's . I would have liked to operate that combine without a the computerized equipment they now have . I had to stop farming just before the all the computers were in the equipment . My former boss had a S 780 with a 40 draper header the last time I saw him but that was a couple of years ago so I'm not sure exactly what equipment he has now . Great video as always . Great interview with Matt. Thanks to you and to him.
    Having grown up with JD 55 combines, I'm totally amazed with the size of the combines that are being produced now. Not to mention the precision of the GPS systems that let them cut off lands and end up with a perfect last row.
    I find it interesting that draper headers have come back. They were used on the pull harvesters like the JD 36 and it's predecessors. But when JD introduced the 55 combine it used an auger too move the cut grain to the center of the header. With the headers so wide as they are now, does that thrash out too much grain in the header? Or maybe with such wide cuts you need to move more grain than an auger of reasonable size can do?

      60ft will soon be the new norm from all the Draper Head manufacturers as bigger combines make their way to the market. It will be nice to have 60ft heads to match the 60ft air drills running ahead of these combines in the fall. The 50ft leaves the odd 10ft gap each pass.

    • @jamesbarbour8400
      @jamesbarbour8400 5 місяців тому +1

      @@bigtractorpower I believe that at least some outfits down in Australia run with 60 foot headers, owing to their comparatively less cropping density, compared to the US.
      Their soil structure, in their broadacre farming systems can't support quite so many plants per unit of area.
      Where Rotary combines in particular are concerned, it is hugely important to keep them fully loaded with crop, in order to maximise performance and output.
      Whilst I am aware that combine categories are determined by horsepower, physically, combines can't really get much bigger than they are now, particularly in terms of overall width, as they need to be able to transport within the legal limit, on European roads, where the maximum is something like 3 metres.
      Furthermore, transporting a 60 foot header would surely present a bit of a headche, when it comes to the pivot points on the running gear of the transport trailer. By which I mean, the turning radius of such a long trailer. Should imagine that rear wheel steering on the transport trailer, in addition to the normal bogie steering at the front, would become necessary.

    • @bigtractorpower

      This farm double crops soybeans right behind the wheat as it’s harvested. Corn follows soybeans. The field in this video was harvested in June and no tilled to soybeans. Those soybeans will be harvested in October. Next March this field will be planted in corn and will be harvested in August. In October wheat will be planted after the corn stalks are disked and the rotation will repeat.

      It’s hard trying to show all the machines running across such a large property. They get so spread out. Rarely do they ever line up side by side which is what I would like to see but it is not efficient.
