This is one terrific interview. Bravo that Denny McClain gave you so much time, and you pet him speak. Rare these days.

I remember that 1968 season like it was yesterday. 31 game winner was an unbelievable accomplishment. Only 2 30 game winners in the last 90 years.

I'm so glad Al Kaline is Denny's favorite player. I used to sit behind Kaline in RF instead of sitting behind my class mates at Cass Tech High School up until 1970, when I was sitting behind the 8-Ball in San Diego to the MCRD, becoming a Hollywood Marine. Great memories . Best hot dogs ever I tasted. I could get a hot dog, beer, and pretty good seats for less than 5 bucks! I'm glad I clicked on the thumbnail. Thanks.

What a wonderful interview of a historical achiever in baseball! I remember Denny's record of that 1968 season as if it were now. It's etched in my mind that by the All-Star break in 1968 his record was 16 and 2. He ended up at 31 and 6. What I mean by historical is that Lefty Grove went 31 and 4 in 1931. Since 1968 no one has won more than 27. Denny and starters before him pitched every 4 days; now I believe it's every 5 days. Unless something drastic happens, he could be the last to win 30. Happy to see that Mr. McClain is doing well, and thank you for helping me recall an enjoyable memory.

@@VictoryOverVices My guess is that it could be the UA-cam algorithm. I watch a lot of sports, and what do know, your thumbnail popped up. That meant an immediate watch by me! Appreciate very much your effort in giving him the exposure. I hope it helps you!

@@VictoryOverVices Like Pete Rose, Denny McLain is Aries and as such is susceptible to getting into trouble by being impulsive and childish.

WoW! First time to listen to this particular podcast. Usually, I pass right over stuff like this, but it was the topic of McLain that made me stop to investigate. Actually, quite impressive to hear this interview with Mr. McLain, as he's always a good listen/read. Listen to or watch very few podcasts because.....well, they just aren't well done. Tried again, due to lack of real sports on terrestrial radio anymore. Music is CRAP, won't listen to f*x, the four letter network is just american football---don't need or want ANY of that garbage
Giants fan, but always had a huge respect for the 60s-70s Detroit Tigers.....McAuliffe, Cash, Freehan, Horton and of course, Kaline. Favorite players were Freehan & Northrup. Never seemed to have enough pitching, though, even with Denny, Lolich and Wilson. How/why they got rid of Dobson was beyond me. Thought Cain woulda been a better, more effective pitcher.
The host seems to have a decent presentation. Humility, respect along with depth on subject can go far. Keep up the good work, Friend. THANKS!
    I may return.

He is irredeemable…. He was given more than one chance. His actions at Petes Packing were disgusting.

He has many of his baseball facts wrong. The Orioles did not have four 20 game winners until 1971, Denny spoke as if it was 1969 and said that's why the Tigers didn't win the division that year. Yes, Baltimore won a slew of games that year, probably 109 or so but the Tigers only won about 90.

he slips into confabulation from time to time. Common with older, substance abusers. The gaps in memory are filled in/glossed over in order to maintain a cohesive narrative. Also can make it easier to accommodate self-deception in addiction scenarios. Even where the subject of addiction is not on the table (like here) it is apparent...think of it as a habit of thought
