  • The way I shoot has changed over the last few years, and my body and eyes have too. This has left me feeling a bit alien with my custom guns, so I called Matt from The Gun Fit Company for a second opinion!
We measured my guns, measured me and had a lot of fun!

I would like to know the difference of the try stock measurements compared to your other guns measurements.

A cogent and detailed conversation on gun fit that goes beyond just numbers. It’s good to see the recognition of weight and balance as key aspects of the experience along with the understanding that the measurements are not absolute. Comments on gun speed and how it is effected by weight and balance were dead on. This was a great nuts and bolts video. BTW, as an American, I can attest that we do love to adjust everything. If it has a screw we’ll turn it.

Beeing a professional gunfitter in Germany I would like to add a few informations that i feel could have been discussed:
    - your gunmount is very deep in your shoulder the result is that you pull your right shoulder up excessively to meet the cheek while your face is bend so far down that you look along or far above your barrels like a snooker or Pool billard player.
Your vision is far worse with your eyeballs stretched to the max with line of sight passing your eyebrows.
Your uneven shoulder tension is at least a disadvantage in swinging right to left or left to right as the effort is not similar.
Also the amount of shoulder lifting influences your accuracy in sight picture an its just an unnessessary extra variable in a game that has so many variables allready
I found it remarkable that you seem to lock your elbow down each time just before the shot breaks almost as if one could mount a trigger mechanism on your right elbow. What is the advantage your are seeing in this extra movement? Is there any i can’t see?
In your very professional videos i have also seen you headlifting between shots. This could have been discussed
I would like to suggest that you stand straight in front of a mirror or find someone that helps you take some body measurements.
You are exceptionally tall and you have a long neck plus you have a long shaped face
These three variables all ad up to your Eye pupil beeing far higher above the center of xour shoulder joint(ball)
Average for an European male is arround 210mm. Looking at your statue i guess ist closer to 250mm in your case.
A Montecarlo stock helps you to shorten the distance you need to bend down on the cheek of the stock which impairs your vision.
Also grip angle and length was discussed but touched only the surface. Sling your hand too high locks your wrist and results in a too low gunmount that requires shoulder lifting and exessive head bending that results in 2nd best vision at best

I've been watching you mount guns for some time now and always wondered whether you had ever been fitted properly. But, obviously, you are an excellent shot and have been able to force your body to accommodate a variety of stock dimensions. Making changes that would place the butt of the stock in your deltopectoral groove, where I think it belongs to lessen your clutching of the gun and pounding of your cheek, might alter your whole stance too much.
The Monte Carlo was a sort of compromise but it certainly seemed to help. All fun but far too brief a discussion of stock fitting.

I watched this video because I am curious what your LOP is. I am not as tall or as thin as you but was fitted in the spring and was told my LOP should be 16 1/4 inches. I was surprised at that number as I have never seen anything for sale over 15 1/2.
This put the brakes on my dream shotgun as maybe I need to go custom, at least for one gun.

The dark art of gun fit ....
At 50+ years old, over the the past couple of years I have acquired both a 725 Prosport and a ruptured thoracic disc.
A combination of adjustable comb and adjustable butt pad has been both essential and an epiphany - Monte Carlo all the way for me these days.
Scores are getting back up there too 👍

Hi Johnny. On an unrelated topic I would welcome your view on a VERY Interesting gun. A Cogswell and Harrison millennium No 2. A side by side English made side lock ejector with fixed open chokes and 2 3/4 chambers and all for a reasonable price. Please check them out as it is a unique proposition in 2023.... I think anyway. 😮

As a poor, short, fat, american I had no idea about gun fit till recently 2 years ago, I have been making do with guns that were too long for me for years. But after finding a gun that I was not afraid to alter and make to fit me, the birds seem to be hard to miss now. Dont shoot many clays, but the pheasant in the pies, and woodcock in the pan lately have been delicious.

Gun fit is such a marginal thing, for instance your cheek pressure is never going to be 100% exact shot to shot, you are moving and pressing as you shoot so even a "perfect" fit chnages, if you can mount it to a good sight picture set and forget, ps love the hull vest jonny don't fancy sending me one in oz do you??? Haha
