- In this week's episode, Patrick and Stuart install the new fencing for the dogs that finally arrived. They get a visit from friends and fellow chatelains Terry and Ash from the UA-cam channel @chateaudelalacelle and then do some treasure hunting with them in a tour of the second floor/attic of the chateau. Patrick and Stuart also make an early morning trip to Sainte-Sévère-sur-Indre to go to a grande brocante and show their purchases.
Join Patrick and Stuart on their journey to find a neglected, forgotten, or crumbling château in France, and then continue to follow them as they work on its restoration, rénovation, decoration, and furnishing. Along the way, they will also create and share videos on their preparation for having gîtes for guests, and an event venue in their chateau (wedding, birthday, anniversary, organization or club meetings, retreats, etc.).

The padded door was traditionally used to separate the servants area from the main part of the house and was padded to dampen any sounds from travelling through. In English you would hear reference to “the baize door” as they were more often covered in green baize.

The small wooden stands you found in the attic should mount on the large fabric board with the shelf attached and it’s used to display porcelain.

Im thinking you do, in the sense of sussing out antiques, treasures in curbside sales, or on the antique alleyway through the central south. I still grive that I will probably never get to do it, given so so many reasons not to go there.. I grew up in a n old mining community on its last legs… I have excavated, in BC , Canada old gold mining areas, old trash dumps from mining claims and sawmill camps, and sadly, an old flooded Japanese Interment camp. I found bottles and china fragments from the. 30’s to the 50’s which thrilled me to death! This is Canada , after all. Western Ca, outsode of Victoria and Vancouver, does not have a deep history, amongst European elements…... First nations I have no business even trying to explore… my most precious items are a knickel value beer glass from a saloon, and a Japanese brass mesh long handled device for scooping things out of deep fryers or water baths. I know thos was brought to the area by a displaced Japanese family, forced into an internment camp until the end of WW 2. … the things we have done…

That was nice to see you both working on the fence. Mostly we see Patrick because Stuart is filming. The dogs liked it outside, they were enthousiastic.
On the attic you found shelfs. Those shelfs were made for small statues. Ash and Terry and Rob liked the small treasures. At least they found it interesting. At the brocantes I see lot of stuff I like. I need to go to France, to go to those broccantes but in Belgium there are also brocantes.
It is so true. Stuart usually films and it was great to do this with both of us visible. The dogs really love being out back. Terry, Ash and Rob really enjoyed seeing the attic. Now we need to find statues! I remember being at a Brocante in Belgium in 1986. Was wonderful. Great comment. Thank you so much. 💖💗💖

Love watching your vlogs Stuart and Patrick. I am envious of your visits to Brocantes. I live in a rural area and there is nothing like that except in major cities and towns, but the goods sold are not like what is found in France. It was lovely to see your gorgeous dogs again, and I think there were seven! I could watch a whole vlog of them. Are they not permitted inside the Chateau like they were in the U.S?. It is wonderful to see Terry and Ash visit you - They, and their family are such hard workers - never complaining, just getting on with the job! Ember is asleep on my lap and I type with one finger. 😳🥰. They are allowed in some parts (always in the kitchen, linen room and dining room). The boys will mark on the 200 year old silk covered furniture……

I bought a little iron bed like that. My daughter used it as a toddler. It's called a "campaign bed" and they fold up because they were needed to be portable. Ours is red. I loved it because one side can actually be folded down under the mattress and used as a day bed. Someday, if my now 20 year old daughter has kids, that will go to her house.

The fan shaped piece in the attic is Japanese (or the fan shaped paper on it is Japanese). Of course it’s possibly Chinese, etc., but from what little I could see, Japanese is my best guess. It’s the paper for a fan, but was most likely never placed on a fan, but mounted for display instead. It would be difficult to date, as Japanese decor has been popular for a long time and traditional designs are… traditional. 😉 But of course fans are fashion accessories, so it might be possible to date after it’s cleaned, depending on the design.
If you like it and can clean the paper without damaging it, go ahead and use it. But if it’s beyond salvage, don’t fret; it’s extremely unlikely to be valuable.

Sorry I missed the premier, life. Looks like you had some fun and continued forward progress! It would be interesting if you put together a book with some of the wallpapers and colors you are finding around the house for the future and historians down the road and it can belong to the house.
I have to be frank, I was looking at the attic thinking let me at that to clean and give you a healthier space to sort! 🤣 With what looked to be bird droppings, you may want to wear masks up there until it gets a good cleaning....but the finds were intriguing!

I probably would have dug in too like you all did then after did the old 🤦 and kept masks hanging on the door handle after that. Either can be toxic and not that many folks actually know so just because I care! I still want to get after the attic with a shop vac.....alas I will be weeding the cracks of our driveway and sidewalk. 😁 My best to you both, I have full faith in you two yo do right by the Château.

The wall sconces are 19th century. They might be late Louis Philippe, though I think Napoleon III for Royalist people, as at his abdiction, the Comte de Chambord was offered the crown, but he declined. He refused the Tricolore as national flag and demanded the white Bourbon flag with 3 French lilies. The style of the sconces is neo Louis XIV, whose portrait is on them. But they're definitely form his reign. Truly, I think the end of Napoleon III (1870 or one or two years later).
