Hillsdale College is an independent institution of higher learning founded in 1844 by men and women “grateful to God for the inestimable blessings” resulting from civil and religious liberty and “believing that the diffusion of learning is essential to the perpetuity of these blessings.” It pursues the stated object of the founders: “to furnish all persons who wish, irrespective of nation, color, or sex, a literary, scientific, [and] theological education” outstanding among American colleges “and to combine with this such moral and social instruction as will best develop the minds and improve the hearts of its pupils.” As a nonsectarian Christian institution, Hillsdale College maintains “by precept and example” the immemorial teachings and practices of the Christian faith.
The College also considers itself a trustee of our Western philosophical and theological inheritance tracing to Athens and Jerusalem, a heritage finding its clearest expression in the American experiment of self-government under law.
By training the young in the liberal arts, Hillsdale College prepares students to become leaders worthy of that legacy. By encouraging the scholarship of its faculty, it contributes to the preservation of that legacy for future generations. By publicly defending that legacy, it enlists the aid of other friends of free civilization and thus secures the conditions of its own survival and independence.

One of our clients that our team of early intervention therapists used to work with gave us some very useful information. One of the therapists asked, "How do you manage such a large family without a dishwasher and a dryer for your clothes?" The husband replied, "If my wife has to go to work to pay for the dishwasher, the dryer, the extra electricity they use, and also for a caregiver to watch the children, what has she gained? I desperately wanted to be at home with my children and he helped me realize there was a way. I just wish I had learned that lesson sooner. I was always taught that the economy was so bad that a woman had to work. Now I know that there are more important things than a big house and all the material things that go with it. God has blessed us with a peace, joy, and a beautiful life that can't be bought.

The human body was reorganized from scratch over the past few years to prevent slavery. As a result of the changes people can work for mostly 5 to 6 hours each day. Even if no reorganizing or reconstruction took place it is odd that so many individuals lost the ability to withstand over 10 hours of hard work in such a short time that other explanations are far fetched. People are not meant to be slaves. That is why you no see so few people working for 10 to 15 hours. Attempts have been made to make people work for such a long time but they began to break down and die following the change. The companies can choose between embracing the new reality or watch themselves crumble to dust, unable to hire new workers as interest in working for longer than recommended dies out. There can be no slavery anymore - anywhere.

I live in a neighborhood that was built in the 1920s. Each house has its own unique design, with ample yards and plenty of trees. The neighborhood has sidewalks, and all of the garages are detached. The neighborhood's design hearkens back to a time when cars were just becoming affordable and people thought of garages more like barns for animals rather than for machines of convenience. People still walked, and working in the yard was done with un-powered push-mowers and manual trimmers, and was seen as an opportunity to shine rather than a chore to be done. I would guess that a lot of folks, like me, moved here because of the neighborhood's design, perhaps also with an appreciation for the values that were around when it was built. Nonetheless, today, almost NO ONE takes care of their yards in my neighborhood, and very few actually do the yard work themselves. Even the younger folks, the most physically able, refuse to do any work in their yards. Apparently, their parents hired people to do their yards, and so the kids never had that responsibility, and thus they also hire people to do their yards. At least those who DO hire it out, make a halfhearted attempt to keep their yard moderately presentable, but then, they only have it mowed maybe only once a month, even in the height of the growing season. As a result, their yards are overgrown most of the time. But yard mowing is all they have done. They don't rake their leaves or trim their bushes or trees, and they don't pay people to do it, either. None of that seems important to them, only having the yard mowed, every once in a while.
It's surprising how insulated so many younger people are from doing their own domestic chores, nowadays, at least as far as yard work is concerned. FORGET knowing how to take care of, maintenance, or rebuild their mowers or other gas-powered equipment.

@@totallysmooth1203In the south, particularly in smaller towns and suburbs, it is not uncommon to have neighborhoods as old as mine. In fact, in one of our more historic neighborhoods, the houses date back to the 1860s.
The problem of illegal aliens has been a problem in the south for many decades. Now that the governors of Texas, Florida, and Arizona are bussing them up to the sanctuary cites further north, whose citizenry have consistently voted for politicians who themselves vote for lax and open-border polices, the problem is now being felt there as well. Perhaps a change in your politicians is in order.

I just have to say this. Those lawnmowers and washing machines don't fix themselves when they break down. The blades don't sharpen themselves nor does the oil and spark plug change itself and in the old days we worked on our own equipment just like they do on the farm. We tuned up our own cars and serviced them as well. That mower in your illustration looks like a 1959 Jacobsen Parks 30 self propelled reelmower. (it's what we called a walking greensmower) It's a collector's item now. My brother-in-law was still cutting his lawn with one well into the early 2000's. We both worked on Jacobsen equipment for a local distributor together for years.

When I was younger we had a push mower with no engine and you had to keep the blades sharp, sometimes having to mow the same spot two or three times over! After a couple of years we had gotten the same style of motor with a 1.5 Briggs & Stratton engine. You still had to keep the blades sharp, watch your fingers and toes and try to get the things started reliably.

So, I was the dishwasher for our family of 6, more when we had friends & Family. I do not compute with some folks thinking they need a washer, when they have almost nothing to wash. Maybe if it were to take 30 to 45 minutes to wash it all, maybe... But, how often does Christmas come?

The is a technological sweet spot where it makes life easier but not too easy. It’s finding out not only GENERALLY what that sweet spot is but also SPECIFICALLY what that sweet spot is as some people’s sweet spot might be slightly different than other people’s sweet spot.
I think a good thing to do is evaluate all technology and determine is it helpful or not. First we must make a list of all technology then go through it one technology at a time and see does this make things too easy, does it serve a true purpose. Then take all the technologies that pass that test and see which one are truly necessary and which ones are going to make life too easy.
Life has to have some challenge to it to be worthwhile but if it is too challenging it seems overwhelming and burdensome. But if it is too easy life loses meaning and becomes hedonistic and people search for meaning in meaningless things or causes. Balance between ease and difficulty is need to ensure the best chance at a good outcome.

  • @ld2906

Hard work is nothing but a symptom of the pursuit of a worthy aim. It is no more an end in itself than the "practise of virtue". When function is elevated above purpose, meaning is forfeited. The contemporary hankering after neo-stoical ideals is simply a symptom of an attempt to avoid the call to worship. The hound of heaven cannot be out run. Until man apprehends the gravity of reality and the essential value of the gift of life, labour can only ever aspire to become a trade. It will never become a craft, the fruit of reverence, the art of worshipful living will continue to elude humanity and we will remain slaves to the world.

The key to demystifying the apparent dichotomy, which is nothing more than a paradox/conundrum, is an approach that pays attention to the perennial principles whilst wisely accomodating and attending to exogenous factors. An approach that pivots off the maxim "conservative in principle and liberal in their application", is the way to ensure virtuous and meaningful progress. In other words, true progress or rather a refinement of the application of principles, without progress descending into the quagmire of subjectivism and ultimately, moral relativism due to the violation of said principles.
Thank you for touching on this excellent and critical issue that requires deep thought and consideration if we're not to fall foul of the sirens of seductive romanticism and a knuckle headed approach to thugging things out.

I don't think you guys are using your UA-cam channel for its best potential value. I'm not knocking your speaker series, but it's a little weird that I had to scroll back over two years into your videos to find anything about student life on campus. Most colleges and universities use their social media pages to connect with potential students, yours seem to be mainly targeted to your donors via your politics. I understand Hillsdale's biggest selling point is it's not like "most colleges" but maybe consider a couple times a year posting videos about student life or a campus/dorm tours. Honestly if your page wasn't labeled by the college name there's almost nothing recent in your video catalog that would lead one to guess this is a college's UA-cam page.

Appreciate the discussion and the topic is certainly relevant and timely however I cannot help recall the following from Dr. Kreeft:
“I do not think that any man, even Dietrich, could be as existentially and practically wise as a woman like Mother Teresa was. Of all her oft-quoted nuggets of wisdom, my favorite is the following. Persuaded to listen to a day of theological lectures about Christian charity, service, and holiness, she was asked afterwards her opinion of what she heard. She replied, tartly, “They talk too much.” “But Mother, they are theologians. That’s what they do. What else could you expect?” Her reply: “Well, this place was pretty dirty and dusty. If one of them had picked up a broom, I think that would have said more.” Dietrich would have smiled happily at that, but Alice would have picked up the broom.”

I have been married for 26 years. 10 years ago when we bought our house I got the first dishwasher I ever had in my life. I am NEVER going back to life without one. I understand the values proposition that this man is making, but his logic and reasoning are just bad.
