I went to Hillsdale's site to hear Lord Black's speech in its entirety. It was a virtuoso performance from beginning to end. Even if one were disinterested in the topic, which I am not, this man's incomparable command of the English language would still be mesmerizing. It was a pure joy to listen to even though he annunciated themes which are deeply troubling to both Americans and Canadians. Well done, Lord Black. I eagerly look forward to your future lectures on important topics of our times.

This lecture by Mr. Black boosted my morale. I have taken all the online Constitution courses at Hillsdale College over the last few years. I would like to do one on Canada presented by Conrad Black. I am Canadian.
The latest studies of the Covid vaccines will had the opposite effects. The Canadian Constitution is a big piece garbage. Trudeau had proved it. I'm sure the people dying of cancers are happy to learn the action of governement was inconstitutionnal.

Franklin got the French to join the Revolutionaries in part by giving the army his invention of lightning rods. French armories had been exploding when struck by lightning at an alarming rate and the rods cut those losses. Then the army helped convince the King to help the Americans.
That is still diplomacy is it not?

Brilliant stuff - only quibble is that it was Durham report, surely, not any farcical Canadian rebellion that won self-government for you (and for us here in Australia too. We had some drunks carrying on at gold mines, but it was by Act of the parliament at Westminster, signed by Victoria, 1900, that gave us what Canada, the senior Dominion, already had: self-government in all things but foreign affairs). No revolution required. London seemingly learned its lesson from the folly of America circa 1776 - the only time we have ever learned from history, that I can think of. All of which should make it easier to undo the mistake of parting and restablish the empire! It was a suggestion made by Hong Kong street protesters and the idea really grows ...

I agree as a Canadian. In my opinion, if we do not receive recall and accountability in those that occupy public office, this country is destined to a pretty sticky situation. The only question is when. There are aspects of our American's cousin's system that we would be well to approximate here.

You forget that Canada was transformed with the 1982 constitution in ways most don't realize!
It was a terrible thing. We need our old system back.
It's insane how much of our constitutional text which is still in effect is just ignored by our judges, and how section one is used to limit rights and freedoms stated in older still in effect constitutional documents.
It also massively expanded the power judges have, it's been filled with activists since day 1 chosen by Pierre Trudeau. Plus Trudeau now has loaded the federal court system with left wing activist judges, same with the senate.
Plus the 1982 constitution is used as a censor to prevent mention of the older texts and to refuse to look at issues using text with tradition and history. The court system ruled that assisted suicide needs to be expanded, but the clearly stated right for Canadians to bear arms, which is specifically defended by many Canadians in parliament such as John A. Macdonald, and part of the (classical) liberal british culture of bearing arms is not a right since 2000.
The 1982 constitution was a Trojan horse, and it needs to be replaced asap.

Unfortuately Conrad recomended Canadians vote for Trudeau over the best PM we have had in 100 years, Stephen Harper bringing 8 years of Canada at its peak to 8 years of misery.
Stephen Harper was not a great PM but neither was he a bad one. He did have a vision and strategy which is something many PM's don't do. However, he struggled with the implementation constantly since he was not great at politics in that he had trouble getting people to see his viewpoints and willingly work for him and often needed to resort to coercive forces. He also struggled with populism because he believed in it, yet it caused many of his policies to fail at implementation or enduring the times because of the resistance they faced from both changing times and people who just didn't like him. If a PM was to be chosen as the best in the last 100 years I would think Brian Mulroney would be it since he was ambitious, charismatic, and focused. He was not dissuaded by the hard issues facing Canada and did what was best for Canada in the long run instead of what was popular now. Even though he only succeeded in half of them, they were transformational to Canada. NAFTA transformed our economy and made us prosper. The hated GST made our tax system more efficient than the tax it replaced and provided a lot of windfall along with NAFTA in the mid 90's to get our budget on track and powered our economy far into the 2000's. The acid rain treaty was one of the most ambitious environmental policies of the day and exists until today. That is a true leader. Someone who rises above the normal expectations of government and provides clear direction, even if its unpopular, and has the ability to build a team that sells that vision and makes it a reality that can endure time. Stephen Harper, Jean Cretien, and all the others after couldn't hold a candle to that. Stephen Harper's biggest surviving legacy will likely be the National Shipbuilding Program which has endured both parties in office and will likely become embedded into the maritime culture forevermore.
Agreed, Harper was not a great PM. It follows that his legacy - as foreshadowed by you - will not be great either! The National Shipbuilding Strategy announced in 2008 has only 2 of the smallest ships in service. The announced ice breakers, frigates, and fleet support ships are still on the drawing boards. The available new ships, while useful, are not adequate to patrol the arctic properly. The projected delivery of the last vessel is (optimistically) in the 2070s. Projected name: HMCS Harper’s Fairy. Some legacy!
@@bunkerhill4854 Actually I think it's going to be a mixed bag. It will be hated by most Canadians and Governments over time because it will be impossible to kill and during peacetime we all know Canadians would rather offload security onto someone else to pay. However, it will be a lasting boon for the Atlantic provinces and likely help them become world-class shipbuilders as the expertise builds over generations due to the program. It will likely result in Canada being more prepared for conflict and a stronger deterrent in the future since these programs tend to become politically important due to regional dependence on the program and it forces them to order ships and invest in R&D indefinitely. Those ships will look useless in peacetime but maintain potency for wartime and give the Government options to project power if necessary.
I think you and many Canadians have unreasonable expectations for the program's first decade, especially considering the circumstances. As I said earlier there exists almost no instance where the first three ships of a new class are flawless. In other countries like the USA and Britain, they don't focus too much on those flaws and see it as part of the expected process. Yes, they do have bad press as issues pop up, but they normally endure because it is normal. Canada in particular is a newbie in this area and never maintained such an industry, so was always going to be harder to build this capability and that will mean more costs and delays. Finally, the fact that the procurement department is bottlenecking the process because they remain at half the size required as a deliberate government policy makes the situation much much worse since they are not timely in evaluating proposals or dealing with vendors. This makes the process take longer, and the LARGEST risk to the cost of any capital project is how long the project takes. Canada's poor emphasis on procurement is a willing choice to make these projects double or triple in price for the same outcome.
The native treaties and all the related land issues and people and territorial tensions is real Canada.

The issue with the governments of the former members of the UK is that they are still the same governments that were members of the UK and no amount of plastering over with constitutions or bills of rights can alter the fundamental governmental culture. The US constitution works (to the extent it does) because it is the document that founded and justifies the government as opposed to a bunch of pretty words drafted and resolved by a government post hoc. the difference may seem small but it makes the document superior to those who happen to occupy the positions of power at any one time , they have no older traditions to call on no previous presidencies to quote it is just we the people contract in hand holding those in power to account (at least in theory)

This shows a fundamental misunderstanding of constitutional law in the Commonwealth Realms as well as the United States. Canada, Australia and New Zealand evolved along British lines, becoming gradually more autonomous before, by the 1980s, cutting the final constitutional links with the United Kingdom. That there are, obviously, more cultural, legal and political similarities between the four biggest realms than with the United States is obvious. It is also, perhaps, we there is a greater sense of community and fellowship shared by people from those countries. Canada developed a distinct form of parliamentary democracy based on its distinct set of circumstances. Australia, in turn, borrowed heavily from the Canadian model and even took some inspiration from the American. New Zealand is the odd one out as it was originally supposed to integrate into the Australian federation, but by the time Australia got to becoming a federation, New Zealand had already become too well established and distinct. The United States, for its part, borrowed heavily from the British tradition. It even passed an act of reception absorbing all English law and legal precedent to that point. Its power structure is essentially that of 18th century Britain and has become fossilised as such. Until the 1850s, the United States still looked to case law in Canada, the UK, New Zealand and Australia. That the Commonwealth Realms retained their monarchy papers over the fact that, in reality, they have diverged at least as much as the Republic of Ireland.
US constitution needs to be revamped, to keep up with the changing times. Canada has done that.

Closet communist, Pierre Trudeau, deliberately made it vague...so it was always in need of interpretation , by Liberal friendly judges on Canada's Supreme Court. I saw the documentary of the attempt to get enough premiers to sign the Charter so that it could become the law of the land. The only bright spot was Alberta premier Lougheed who insisted on the "Notwithstanding clause" , or he wouldn't sign on and there would be no deal, which greatly angered Trudeau. To date, it seems that only Quebec uses this provision...I hope the prairie provinces start using it to protect themselves from federal overreach.

Well, it was a better protest than rioting and arson like the BLM protests in the United States. At least the trucker convoy inspired every country in the west to lift the Covid lockdowns.
