Emphasis on the wrong thing. A VPN service is actually a proxy service with a VPN to connect to the proxy. From the proxy out to other websites, the service doesn't add any security.
IPsec and TLS are what really protect your data.
This is what WSJ has become, all this rubbish content....
VPN is useful while you roaming at China or use public wifi, They can not get your data directly.

Yeah, VPN is great but even with paid VPN subscription, like Surfshark let's say on the US servers I have done struggles with a speed of my connection sometimes. And even when I am trying to tune my settings inside the VPN extension for certain websites to avoid the data going through the VPN filter, it's still trying to do that, and I don't have any clue why this is actually happening. Is that the thing with all paid VPNs like Nord, etc.?Jyst wanted to hear the thoughts of regular users

Do people assume VPN’s don’t have access to your data?
Very much depends on the VPN.
The VPN provider can see the decapsulated traffic. If not properly configured, It can also allow others on the VPN access to remote network services the device is running. Most also split-tunnel for private addressing.

All the data that you send from the very first byte that gets executed on your CPU to another CPU/Host or Server somewhere else in the world.
In order for the CPUs to communicate they need to go through several routes, or systems.
Your ISP down to your wifi router has to add a type of tag to the groups of bytes that travels through their system. Those systems are a set of rules, or 'protocols' that determine how two devices of the same function can send and receive those pieces of data to the other node that uses the same corresponding rules.
TCP, IP, Ethernet, rj45, etc.
That's called encapsulation. Being stuffed inside a mail envelope headed to your destination for them to open to read, or to decapsulate.
Also, 'capsule' is in the word. Look up the word.

Its because only half of what he said was accurate. A lot of wrong info in there. That type of voice inflection means that the person just graduated college and it just parroting a professor or someone that just progrrammed them.
A VPN is not a security tool by itself, it can be when you are connecting to your company VPN, but comercial VPNs dont add any security, in fact, the opposite.
The only real case when someone shouls use one of this VPNs is when you want to watch/see somethong you cant from your country, the rest is just pure marketing

VPN, still being badly reported and explained. VPN should not be associated with increasing security or privacy, it's akin to connecting to a WiFi from a café in a lot of ways. You're basically exchanging who can sniff all your packets from your ISP to another ISP or provider (VPN Server). That's literally the main change. So the question is, who are you distrusting? Not having logs doesn't mean they aren't identifying the traffic going through their network.
