I worked in fashion in Montreal in the 90's and loved Yasmeen. But she's right, in Quebec she did not get huge support until she became big in Europe, and by then she was gone. For me, this decade was about Canadians making it big internationally, giving us some sadly lacking self-esteem. It tended to be Canadian women who broke big, both in music (Celine, Shania, Alanis, Sarah) and fashion (Linda, Yasmeen, Shalom, Eve) and I was crazy-proud of all of them.
I'm in awe of Yasmeen's beauty. I was a teenager in the 90s in Canada and I was completely unaware of Yasmeen until this year (2020). And no I have not been living under a rock. I believe Canadian values and standards of beauty were still rather conservative in the 90s, and she simply didn't get the same kind of media attention as Linda Evangelista. I'm glad that Yasmeen is being rediscovered today and continuing to challenge the predominant euro-centric beauty standard.
She is half Pakistani and half German by ancestry. Linda is full Italian by ancestry from both of her parents. Shalom is a Hebrew name but her parents were hippies and not Jewish and based on her last name, Shalom got English ancestry. Canada is a country of immigrants. Majority of the population comes from the Old World (Europe, Africa and Asia). Most of the Native Canadians have been exterminated and live in smaller populations outside of the big cities. Sad but true.
What does that mean if anything yasmeen appears to be partially of West Asia or Middle Eastern and doesn't appear indian. She also appears to have strong German roots.
