    Been sorting out my parents place last redecorated, god knows ( every room had patchy walls when the paper was removed) sanded all the walls down, soudaled and filled, pva and a couple of coats of matt and its ready for final coats of colour............. I believe this is the best channel for P&D without a doubt.

    this video fills me with horror and makes me realise how thankful I an I don’t do this any more. The patchy walls, the realisation that you really do have to line it, the grimness of the amount of work involved with that, the sanding, the nasty six coats deep skirting full of divots and high points, encumbered by that carpet gripper eventually dripping with blood.

    I agree with Ray Carter in the comments section below. The amount of work, & hard, laborious, unrewarding work is surely at it's greatest in P&D. I undertook a kitchen that had been sub-let & shared by various groups of South Americans in the Brixton area & went to the same high standards as this guy does & it practically broke me. I lost money, felt totally alone, almost suicidal & so angry that I'd said yes to the job! On the way home I took to drinking strong Polish beer from cans as I walked! The guy in this video is like an old British machine with an almost transcendental approach to it all, I'd love to see him struggling with a job or hear about horrible jobs he's had?

    Thank you so much for this video. I've just stripped several rooms of paper and filled holes/cracks, and am ready to sand down the filler. But this video shows how much more I have to do before lining the walls! Unfortunately the previous owners used silicon sealant on everything from the tops of skirting boards, under coving, on top and under dado and picture rails etc etc. It's a nightmare as it hangs onto the old paper (a lot of it being woodchip, a nightmare in itself) at the edges, necessitating using a knife - not an easy job. What grades of sandpaper did you use for the walls and skirtings?

    Mate for crying out loud buy a random orbit dustless sanding system, save yourself the grief of sanding walls manually. It makes no sense to sand areas that rough and that big by hand. Appreciate that your work is decent and that you're old school but there's been some pretty amazing innovations in P&D equipment that just makes the job so much more efficient and enjoyable. Also, said it many times before, try Toupret TX110 filler, you can fill holes of any depth with it. Ditch the Polyfilla, it's an inferior product and there are so many better options on the market now.

    • @PaintingandDecorating

      You can paint them but most people like paper first. To paint you need to wash off the paste then mist coat, fill what you can see then a coat of paint.. Repeat process and it should look good.

      Sure, that is what most people use. But it will shrink and sometimes crack over time if there is movement. Not a problem it can be re-done every time you redecorate. It's just a sticking plaster really though.

      @@paulwilson1555 filler cracks open when it dries out over time, also if you paper the walls and use a blade to cut the top edge of the skirting, the blade can dig in and crak it open. If you get the right caulk, if won't crack. best to get the interior/exterior flexi caulks you can buy now days. If you need to back fill, with caulk (depending on how big it is, silly foam can be used if its very big), do that, then finish the top edge with caulk, nice and smooth.

    I've just removed the old wallpaper from a living room and the walls are a mishmash of old and new plaster, various cracks, rough bits, some old water damage spots. I was thinking of renting one of those large vacuum sanders and going over the walls to try and get some uniformity for painting. Would a sander take off everything or should I sugar soap to get rid of any traces of old paste? I want to get a nice paint finish at the end so I'm wondering whether I should try and get the walls smooth, pay a plasterer to do a skim coat or pay someone to install lining paper? I'd really appreciate any help with this as I'm a bit new to interior DIY and don't want to mess it up. Thanks for all of your superb videos.

    Another master class in decorating. This is one of the best channels for me on UA-cam. Please forgive my question, can I use watered down SBR to seal walls and paint to leave a key and bind to the old surface, as you do with watered down PVA? I have other uses for the SBR and it is water resistant. Many thanks for your efforts.

    • @ProfessionalPainterDecorator
      @ProfessionalPainterDecorator Рік тому +2

      You shouldn't use PVA, I don't know where this has come from, it's not something taught at college. PVA is what plasterers use, SBR also .. as they go into plaster and render mixes. PVA is a decorators nightmare when you come across it when it's been used. When you roll a ceiling and a plaster had patched up and excess PVA has been used and it's on the surface, the paint softens it up.. and when you re roll over it, the paint comes away.

    • @michaelmercury1256

      @@michaelmercury1256 I've no idea what SBR is as it's again.. not a Decorators product. It's what builders, renderer and plasters would use.

    Another quick question, the door frames where they join, there is a thin line, where the two pieces of wood meet, could I use Chaulk just to fill the line? Or would I use wood filler? The surface is currently painted and will be painted over.

    • @TomTomTomTom538
      @TomTomTomTom538 Рік тому +2

      I've had some of my architrave mitres crack through the paint. I found the only way to stop it coming back is to run a fine saw down the mitre to open it up to get foam behind and fill with 2 pack filler. A couple of veneer pins from the top or side help too.
      You can't smear filler or caulk over the top or it will just crack again. I wouldn't recommend caulk for that job it will just shrink back too much
