do three of the walls and the ceiling white [it's a very small space] and do the wall that you see when you walk in a color like "lipgloss" from Dulux. you should do an 'eggshell' or 'matte' finish. also, please sand and paint your trim a bright white. granted, it's a lot of work, but it'll refresh your space a ton!
@Brown Girl Yep, I am planning to put a desk top area in there, as built into the shelving! That's where I will record my podcast. Sound quality in a closet is phenomenal! :) So I want something pretty!
Wow. Thanks for this video, Ms. Appiah. I am taking the wallpaper off our bathroom walls and I was really worried about the brown paper bag areas. Now I know what to do about them. Chris
I learned from a friend and wallpaper devotee to size walls before papering. Sizing prevents drywall from absorbing the adhesive and extends drying time so the paper can be adjusted a bit once it’s on the wall. And when my tastes changed, the paper peeled off with relative ease requiring only a scraper and warm water to remove the sizing and glue. I used Valspar’s Dogwood Petal, a white paint tinged with peachy pink tones in my bathroom, which is roughly the same size as your closet, sans window. It works with pink or gray accents and supports a little bling nicely. But really, the gray your son chose is nice. You could tone it down with white or neutral accents or rev it up with pink, yellow or coral.
Oh my the most simplest video ever. I really really really appreciate you doing this video.. what a blessing. You really took the time to demonstrate, teach, explain and took in consideration the what if this or that happen in the process. Very well put together. I really had to leave an appreciation comment. I don’t know if any one can beat this but allot of jealousy. Please keep it going. God bless you
Serena-Thrift Diving... Thanks for your tutorial on wall paper removal. Your patience and clear explanation made your video exciting for me. I've removed some wall papers in the past and I have a few more to remove. Reviewing your video made me aware that I should not rush. Take time and gradually get it done right. Thanks and Kudos for a nice job.
Was it a good tutorial? Well, the best of all those I have watched! Very clear, complete, and relatable. I am partway through removal of my 25 year old bedroom wall paper and needed better advice than the multiple UA-cam examples I have watched, and this clip is superb.
You are Awesome! Just FYI, you have a beautiful voice. Thanks most of all for the video to remove wallpaper. Your video is the first I have seen that demonstrates exactly how it should be done & the correct tools to use for the job. I love all the hints you gave to keep things neat & protected. I am actually looking forward to doing the job after trying 2 other methods. I also appreciate the protective gear you suggested to be safe.
Wow Sabrina the timing could not be any better, Thank God. Oh if only we lived near to one another😉 I am retired (68 yrs old) and I just purchased a TLC 1984 motor home. The closet has the original wallpaper, but I am going to paint over it. I am also having to get creative cause storage is small. House is 960 sq ft. But it is time to declutter too. I like colors on the bright side. Creamy yellow quiet down vs shout out loud yellow. I also like mustard mixed with cream again the the yellow but med. Mixing cream to mustard and it is so mello but still on a bright side. I like Autumn colors but adding cream to get 1/2 way. Closets can seem dark and that is why I go lighter. Thanks oh boy you are a great teacher n give me confidence to try it. Yeah👍😘☝🙌💝 Caroline Oh PS i reside near Prescott AZ.
I friend bought a huge old Victorian Painted Lady and snookered me into helping her "reno"... Which quite literally meant removing over a hundred years of wallpaper, and a few layers of paint in between a few of them. It took 3 weeks to do one lady's sitting/sewing room. It also took a steamer, 6 gallons of vinegar, wallpaper roller/pricker things, destruction of both my shoulders, and all my love and patience...lol She's so lucky I loved her so much.
Most apartment buildings in Copenhagen are 100 years old and you would cry if you had to reno walls here.when I removed some of my walls I found barbed wires, bamboo, newspapers, cigarette butts, coal and stuf I couldn’t identify as insulation. I did have fun reading some of the headlines on the very old newspapers so I saved some of the most whole pieces of paper.
Great tutorial. We just moved into our new home and the kitchen and baths have dated wallpaper. Thanks for being so detailed, specific and real about how long and tidious this is.
You are such a hard worker! It will take me much longer for my small bath, but I am determined! Thanks for this demo! I appreciate your videos so much!
LOL, the pie was good, too!! :) It's one of the only things I can make that turns out right. HAHA. You're funny: "got to work on time." :) That's definitely a win, too! :)
This video gave me hope! I am getting the wallpaper off (slowly….lots of layers with paint in between) but I had no idea what to do about the drywall I was “destroying” in the meantime…thank you!!
I realize this video is 3 y/o, but I ran across it today, for my wife and I are on our 3rd room with wallpaper. It's the kitchen. We had the wallpaper professionally installed and I am running into areas where we removed the wallpaper that it looks as though the glue ate the wallboard paper as well. I believe what I am going to have to do here is a lot of skim coating and sanding. What I have found is that whatever time you think it takes to remove wallpaper, triple the estimate, because it takes a heck of lot longer than you initially thought. Especially, if you have to work overhead and your shoulders start to tire out. Thank you for the video. I especially appreciated how you removed the sections of wood support with the saw. Set the depth and cut. Awesome tip.
Good luck with your wallpaper removal and repair, Steve! And I was just saying this to a friend the other day: whatever amount of time you think a DIY project will take, multiple that by 3x - 10x! It's always longer. ALWAYS! lol. Good luck!!
I appreciated this step by step guide of how to remove wallpaper because there are a lot more steps involved in the process than most videos like to admit. I have a better understanding as to why my father didn’t remove the wallpaper we had and just painted over it cause boy does that seem like a lot of work for one closet space. Although I would like to get rid of it in the office space that I’m working on. Thank you so much for your determination and guidance!
Thank you very much! What will help A LOT is Zinsser® Gardz® Problem Surface Sealer. Use it after wallpaper removing!!! BTW, new color of your walls are so beautiful, stylish and really modern! I am planning to use really similar one. Great job!
Thank you so much! Just what I needed to learn. I have a small room, 2m x 2m, covered with wallpaper. The wallpaper is old and needs to go, and replacing it with emulsion paint... thanks for all the tips... you are so practical, making DIY looks so simple and affordable! You are incredible!
Thanks for taking the time out to make this video. I found it very helpful and you covered all the points with details. Now it doesn't seem that scary anymore to remove wallpaper. I have two rooms to do.
I ve been decorating for over 20 years and I can honestly say I have used a steam stripper twice and that was when I was an apprentice.use .warm water and add half cup of vinegar soak the paper with sponge or brush and leave for 10 minutes or so .if need to go over it again and leave again.the vinegar reacts with the paste which makes it really easy to strip the paper and you wont get the peeling of your dry wall
I agree. Last week I stripped 2 rooms that I know the wallpaper was well over 20 years old & coated with 19 yrs worth of 2 smokers residue. Spray bottle of 1/3 vinegar to 2/3 hot water beats steaming, or using Downy, Windex, etc. A bottle spray bottle removes the manual labor of wiping, sponging. Plus it’s a heck of a lot faster, practically instant, and no mess if you do it right. I will never use anything but vinegar again. It takes the struggle out of stripping paper.
@@adjustedfate wonder if you could put the vinegar and water mixture in the steamer?? I am having a heck of a time with removing some wallpaper in our new home.
@@lindseyemberton5286 you would need to make sure the mixture wouldn’t harm the steamer...idk the answer for certain but lean toward it being ok. Might even clean out your steamer in the process. Personally I would flip the mixture using mostly vinegar to water, spray the walls and then use the steamer, too. On my walls I would spray, strip using a putty knife but I have a habit of ripping it once I have it started which that tends to leave the layer of glue paper. I would then spray those areas really well and it came off very easy. Mr Clean makes a Magic Eraser mop that I used after all the wallpaper was stripped to remove any glue residue and clean the walls to be ready for Kilz Latex 2 primer. An amazing, cheap cleaner is TSP, it’s more labor intensive but will literally clean anything. I scoured the Internet prior to tackling this job & TSP was the most recommended cleaning agent to prepare walls for paint. Make sure to wear gloves! Hope this helps. :)
AWESOME tutorial and right on time (for me). I have to remove some grass wallpaper in my master bedroom and redo a seriously long wall. I started this video and you had me at the "The wallpaper is coming down tomorrow" dance at 1:20 mark. I laughed so loud my cats woke up. I think the color of paint that your son chose is good, BUT... watch the beginning of this video again and check out how much stuff you had packed into this closet... not much of the color you choose will show if you don't trim back your items inside. With the install of cubby's and places that will now be seen, I would go traditional with a matt white or for a color pop a pale yellow or pale blue... (anything pale). With that said I have a suggestion for you that helped me on one of my guest rooms -- When planning your walk-in makeover take into consideration ALL the space. The rough-draft of your new wall did not include shelving over the window. Consider making an entire wall shelved in. The results will WOW you because it looks more custom AND provides you more storage space. Floor to ceiling is an easy thing to do on an entire wall and provides that custom finish that will actually increase the value of the home on resale. I can't wait to see Part 2. Thank you so much for this tutorial and the laughs. My husband and I adore you. BIGGEST HUGS and Happy Holidays to you and your family.
This was excellent! Out of all the wallpaper removal videos that I watched prior, none addressed skim coating, or sanding down of "paper bag" areas. My wife and I just bid on a 130 year old home, and there are quite a few horrible wallpaper jobs in there.
Other videos showed priming the paper bag areas first, then skim coating. She did well getting the wallpaper off of what looks like raw drywall. Some areas don't have much paper bag areas. It might be easier for people who are lucky enough to have painted walls under wallpaper.
As usual another brilliant and exciting video from Thrift diving. I can see it certainly takes a lot of work to remove wallpaper. It's going to look beautiful when you're finished.
I removed wallpaper years ago but I first scoured the walls and then use a mixture of water and fabric softener then sprayed it over the wallpaper. Didn’t take long and was easy to peel off.
Oh my, yes!!!!! That would be lovely!!! Okay, I think you may have chosen the winner! I was seriously considering doing a slightly darker color than my bedroom, but blush pink makes me haaaaaapppy. It would match my jammies. :) Thank you!!!
Brilliant tutorial! Thank you for using the electric sander on the walls - somehow I thought we have to do this manually and it was killing me!!! Looking forward to lots more great ideas!
I tried Dif wallpaper remover on the walls of my house when we moved in and it made NO difference whatsoever. But the steamer has been my tried and trusted companion when it comes to wallpaper! I guess it comes down to this: different things work for different people, based on their own experience. :) Glad it worked well for you, though!
@@ThriftDiving My steamer wouldn't tough my wallpaper. I found it best to just peel off the top layer, leaving the softer lower layer, which Dif removed very easily. Mind you though, I don't profess to know all about wallpaper, but my paper was a vinyl type. The stuff sure hides faults though.
I used DIF years ago. Since I was basically out of it, I tried a wallpaper hack I saw on another YT page. Mixing some dishwashing liquid with warm water, pouring it into a home garden sprayer and spraying down wall papered walls. Found out I had THREE wp layers to remove.
@Thrift Diving: I searched for "how to remove wallpaper and prep for paint," found your video, and since it seemed to tell me exactly what I needed to know, I didn't need to look any further. Thanks for the instructions. I would love to try that apple pie! Yum!! Thanks for the helpful video.
I love the gray your son picked up. Easy to accent with the girly-girl colors (or not). Aside from that, I absolutely love a sage green. Again, easy to accent with other colors - either bold or girly-girl. Your closet gives me the twitches! I'm a minimalist and sort/toss clothing every season. For years, I start each season by hanging all my clothing with the hangars backwards. As I use something, if it goes back in the closet, it gets hung at the end of the line and the hangar hung frontwise. Within a couple months (or through the holidays) I can tell what I'm wearing regularly and what I haven't touched. If I haven't touched it, I don't need it. Out it goes. Life can be so simple :-)
Thank you so much. I have an ugly wallpaper guest bathroom that seems so daunting, but this video has inspired me to go for it. I really like the gray paint. It's very soothing. You could add pink, lavender and turquoise accessories.
We just bought house and the owners glued awful wallpaper strait to the drywall so there is massive brown bag sections where the glue has seeped in. Thanks for going over the repair, gives me a little hope haha.
My parents bought fixer uppers in the 70s and 80s so I got pretty good at removing wallpaper. I only ever used a bucket, sponge and a 4" scraper. You don't need a steamer.
1 part cheap fabric softener to 10 parts water in a squirt bottle. Spray wall patch til soaked and scrap off. Much easier and cheaper with less damage to the drywall beneath.
Seafoam is a beautiful color if you like a light greenish blue. Very informative video. Thank you. I was so surprised to hear your singing voice. Not bad at all.
Enjoyed your video. Glad you used respirator during sanding too. Most people don't. As far as color...Please don't go with grey which seems to be uber popular these days. How about a lavender accent wall at the back of the closet with complementary creamy color everywhere else. You've probably already chosen a color though. Thanks again.
Hi! I agree with you on gray. I am so "grayed' out now because everyone is using it. I'm actually going with a "blush pink" that I think (HOPE!) will look good!
Sing it Kid!!! Sing it!! This was a fantastic video on some of the scenarios that arise when removing wallpaper. It was very informative. You have the patience of a saint with that steamer!! I've always rushed like a dope thus creating more work for myself on the spackle & sanding end of things. Hoping all is well, Dirty Jersey out!!
This tutorial was perfect. I'm here in 2022 and am trying to learn how to do the wallpaper. I have paper wallpaper, not vinyl and it's tearing off fine without the steamer. No glue is left behind. It was adhered to the sheetrock. I will need to use the joint cover coating... it she's like a big project but I can't wait to do it?
This video was very helpful and made removing my bathroom wallpaper easier. I've used the traditional spray bottle with warm water and fabric softener which worked ok but was very messy. Your method of using a steamer, worked very well; was less messy and easier. I used a small garment steamer cos that's what I had and it did the job. Thanks for sharing. Any suggestions for getting the shower grout white and clean?
Oh I super appreciate how long it takes to get that wallpaper off now if you're familiar with the old old wallpaper I used to take wallpaper off with a sponge and hot water so it takes forever and ever and ever so I would love that little machine about 25-30 years ago
Ahhhh my favorite color for this closet would be maybe a pastel lime green, or a pastel yellow, or maybe all pearl white with an accent yellow champagne wall
Thrift Diving yes! It can really light up a room in a very special way! I don’t know the exact paint color or the brand because I’m from Brazil, but i am also thinking about an amethyst color, it is a very deep purple, but without being dark and heavy.
I’ve just started redecorating a guest bedroom and the walls are a mess, I love this video and I feel like I can do this repair on the drywall by myself. Great video
There is a dulux colour called frosted steel that is much lighter than the colour you chose but has a tiny hint of violet, and it's a stunning pretty but clean and fresh colour, great for a closet.
I am loving the blush pink suggestions from everyone! :) I am going to be making my closet my project for January! So hopefully by the end of January! I have done all the planning, now I just need to buy supplies and start BUILDING. Well....after I clean up my garage. LOL
I really, really love that colour, but maybe a little on the dark side for such a small area. Saying that, I am reupholstering my sofa, and that colour is perfect!!
Yeeeesss, that's right, a little dark for such a small space. One thing, though, is that much of the shelving may cover it up. I'm not sure yet. Ooh, what are you reupholstering?
Oops, missed that you said "sofa." Wow, you got skills like that? I'm impressed!! It is something I have always wanted to do but I am still not finished my wingback chair. 🤣🤣🤣
Hey Serena I think the color could be a little lighter but still in the gray family, seeing that you and hubby share the closet and really when you build the shelves etc. You really wont see most of the walls. You have a nice voice..Thanks for sharing..
What color do you think I should paint my walk-in closet? Leave your favorite paint color name and brand right here!

Brilliant tutorial! Thank you for using the electric sander on the walls - somehow I thought we have to do this manually and it was killing me!!! Looking forward to lots more great ideas!
Finally the video I’ve been looking for. I removed the old wood chip paper from my ceiling and have been wondering what to do next 😅
Thanks for the help with this you really helped me out i thought your singing was not bad in the end lol !
Take that steamer and throw it in the trash. Here in Australia, I used a product called Dif wallpaper remover. Magic stuff. Easy as pie.
You must feel so good getting the last of the wallpaper out! Great job!
I do! Bye-bye, wallpaper! ☺
Thanks for the tips and your a great singer 😁😍
This video is perfect. Saved me so much time
We just bought house and the owners glued awful wallpaper strait to the drywall so there is massive brown bag sections where the glue has seeped in. Thanks for going over the repair, gives me a little hope haha.
Thanks for going over the whole process, very helpful!
You have so much patience! 😊
I like how you’re calling it, “brown paper bag areas” lol ❤️
HAHA, that's what it reminds me of! LOL
A pale lavender is my favourite colour. Behr’s paint colour 640A-2 is very nice.
Very helpful - thank you. The singing was wonderful - a recording contract beckons I think !!!
Sing it Kid!!! Sing it!! This was a fantastic video on some of the scenarios that arise when removing wallpaper. It was very informative. You have the patience of a saint with that steamer!! I've always rushed like a dope thus creating more work for myself on the spackle & sanding end of things. Hoping all is well, Dirty Jersey out!!
seal the wall before skimming with joint compound. The paper under will swell and loosen and you will have a mess.
Thank you!!! I am going crazy on my wallpaper whitch is stuck so I have to buy that steam thing
After seeing this I vow never to put wallpaper on my walls! Eek!!
Haha, well. modern papers today claim they're easy to remove! "Removable" as they say.....I am curious to know if that is true! lol
Thrift Diving I’ll never find out hahaha.
If you size the wall with sizing, it comes right off! Really, I promise.
Contact paper is on the phone and would like to speak to you
Yah!!! Me too!!!
I am trying to remove that exact wallpaper from my bathroom! Thanks for the info!
! not ?
I'm so happy our houses in the Netherlands hardly have dry wall. It's so much easier to take wallpaper of of concrete.
Ooh, the Netherlands!!! I would love to visit there and see how you live!
A lady of many talents❤️
Thank you!!
Amazing video! Thank you for showing real time and for taking that extra step for your viewers it is very much appreciated!!
Oh I super appreciate how long it takes to get that wallpaper off now if you're familiar with the old old wallpaper I used to take wallpaper off with a sponge and hot water so it takes forever and ever and ever so I would love that little machine about 25-30 years ago
Wow!!! It looks so much better just like that
Great job 👍
Ahhhh my favorite color for this closet would be maybe a pastel lime green, or a pastel yellow, or maybe all pearl white with an accent yellow champagne wall
The like green would be really pretty! One of my blog readers did her laundry room in that color and it looked so fresh!
Thrift Diving yes! It can really light up a room in a very special way! I don’t know the exact paint color or the brand because I’m from Brazil, but i am also thinking about an amethyst color, it is a very deep purple, but without being dark and heavy.
Awesome video. Thanks for the great instructions.
This video is really informative
I will be doing this to my walls
Thanks
I’ve just started redecorating a guest bedroom and the walls are a mess, I love this video and I feel like I can do this repair on the drywall by myself. Great video
You have a lovely singing voice but I do really enjoy watching these types of projects in your day job too :-)
Haha, thank you!! If I sounded remotely good, it was the acoustics in the closet. haha
I’ve been really stressed trying to get my bathroom redone on my own, this video helped a lot! You explained everything so well! Thank you :)
I'm so glad I could help, Reese!
That color is gorgeous. I wouldn't change it.
Coral Clay from Sherman Williams!
I’m about to use this color in my living room and I can’t wait to get this wallpaper off...thank you for your video.
There is a dulux colour called frosted steel that is much lighter than the colour you chose but has a tiny hint of violet, and it's a stunning pretty but clean and fresh colour, great for a closet.
Ooh I'll look that up right now!!
Cool Video! I always use Roman Rx-35 to seal ripped drywall paper first. Anytime you see brown I'd recommend sealing it before the skim coat : )
Can't wait to see what color you do! I'm leaning towards blush with rose gold accents...brackets, knobs, door handles, etc...when will part two air?
I am loving the blush pink suggestions from everyone! :) I am going to be making my closet my project for January! So hopefully by the end of January! I have done all the planning, now I just need to buy supplies and start BUILDING. Well....after I clean up my garage. LOL
Oh, Serena, I love the color!! Don't change it! Bring color in with accents. 😄
AND...WHAT A VOICE!! America DOES have talent!!
Love your Fred Sanford t-shirt!
Color looks great
I really, really love that colour, but maybe a little on the dark side for such a small area.
I love this lady, thanks for sharing
Thank you for the video. You have inspired me to remove my wallpaper.
Hey Serena I think the color could be a little lighter but still in the gray family, seeing that you and hubby share the closet and really when you build the shelves etc. You really wont see most of the walls. You have a nice voice..Thanks for sharing..
I am glad I found your video clip and i will need to remove wall paper from my mobile home that i just bought
I love that color and you did a great job! I would do a grey blue or some neutral
This came our AWESOME!!! LOVE THE GREY!!!
Thank you! Where can i buy that mask?
I like the gray. Your son did good!
Very helpful...I only wish I'd known about the steamer before I suffered through 3 days of tedious sponging and picking small areas off at a time.
YIKES! I know how that feels. Same thing when we started removing the wallpaper when we moved in 10 years ago! LOL. The steamer works SO well.
