What Is the Democratic Party's Big Weakness?

Identity liberalism, points to self, personal identities. But by definition that creates division since people divide over differences. What Mark Lilla says the liberals need is a common vision for the common good. For Lilla, that means focusing on what we share. Since we no longer share one faith, he thinks we need to focus on citizenship as our shared political identity. But that is a huge problem, since the universities where liberals have retreated to, do not educate in politics. It’s all about individual identities and discovering what we are already. There is no outward turn to learning, no common body of knowledge to learn. And no politics since politics is not identity navel gazing but defining a common vision based on common goods.
