I got away from self feeds 20+ years ago, hole saws make life easier and a cleaner end product. One quick tip I discovered is score a few holes to be drilled then go back with a 1/2" paddle bit and drill on the bottom of the score line. Sawdust can escape, can stays cooler and sharper longer. Good idea about the 2x6. You really need to have good plans to locate correctly.
Thankfully the only plumbing vent I missed being in a wall was poking an inch and was under a stairwell so no one will ever see it.
