I live very close to a Walmart, Dollar General, Family Dollar and Dollar Tree. I do shop at all of them. Who shops and buys 1 item. For me it pays to shop at these stores but you are correct in factoring in the transportation cost.

The only thing is that, when you're factoring time, you also have to factor how long it takes to shop in a store that's maybe 12,000 square feet vs one that's 182,000 square feet. Then factor in temptations and 'can't find it or they moved it'. If you only need 3 things at Walmart, but 1 is in cleaning or baby supplies, one is in paint and hardware and one is in HBA and you are still headed over that entire 182,000 square feet before heading up to the front to check your own stuff out because they decided not to staff any lines.

It really depends on what you are buying. I seldom buy food at dollar stores, for instance. I do buy one thing at Dollar General that I can’t get anywhere else. I use incontinence pads, and I have found that Dollar General’s is not only cheaper than others, they are better.

I don’t think it’s meant to be that way. I always thought the people running those places used the slogan “Meh…it’ll work.”

Great advice! We have personally had that problem in all 3 of those stores.

I think that the bigger hidden cost at any store is the average temptation level. Whether it is Walmart or Dollar tree, I am going to walk through certain areas no matter what. So which store consistently succeeds in tempting me to buy more or spend more time than I was willing to spend? That is something to consider as well.

I always think of time and expense for all things. Maybe the reason it really doesn"t have any effect on my life. Wife doesn't even think of it. I can afford her though.

Not to mention you might be able to find some of your items on markdown therefore saving even more…
I never consider Dollar Tree unless it’s something my wife want’s specifically.

All the time. My wife is an expert at finding clothes for under 3$ at Walmart.
