people win Oscars every year for movies we all forget or never see - yet here we are, 20 something years later watching a clip of a truly memorable performance from one of the greatest actors alive. The Oscars will get things wrong often, but the people, remember the best movies for a long time. If I was an actor, I'd rather be remembered for my work, then get an Oscar and be one of the easily forgotten honored.
Yes, that may be true but can you list every Oscar winning actor in Oscar winning movies? I remember this performance for his greatness. I can't remember every Oscar winning performance because I believe some winners shouldn't have won.
Jack Nicholson repeated his famous courtroom monologue as Colonel Jessep off-camera several times so Rob Reiner could film the reactions of other actors and actresses from various angles. Nicholson's memorable on-camera performance was filmed last, but according to Reiner and the other cast members, Nicholson gave it his all every take as if he was on camera. Nicholson said he was "quite spent" by the time he finished.
For a great scene it usually requires 3 or 4 extra people who "buy on" The judge and Kevin Bacon were absolutely necessary and Bacon really added to "the moment" and perfectly - PERFECTLY
I always wondered if in this movie Kevin Bacon was "in on it" or genuinely believed Jessup's innocence. I got the impression he was a good guy on the wrong team. And he only figured it out here. But I couldn't be sure based on some of the other things he said throughout the film which paints him as somewhat in the know, but also a friend to cruise and good human being. For a guy who wasn't even in a starring role, bacon played a very nuanced character.

When they sat down for the table read, the first time the cast was together, Kevin Pollack said Nicholson put everything he had into his lines. He didn’t just slide through them. That’s usually the case at the introductory table read. And when this sequence was being filmed, on days when the camera shots centered on Tom Cruise and/or others Nicholson was there anyway. Usually if an actor, especially one of his caliber, isn’t going to be in the film shot that day there is an assistant reading the lines so the actors being filmed have their prompts. Jack Nicholson was there every day they were shooting his court scene. Totally off camera he delivered his lines the same way we see him do it. He taught those young actors what a professional is.

And to this day, that scene was so riveting that it's used as a meme to attack woke yellow pink liberals in the Philippines, of which they can't handle the truth that they screwed up the Philippines, and showing their hypocrisy and failure, of which the Marcoses including BBM now take advantage against the woke yellow/pink liberals.
@@junaldinho100 hardly corrupt. While in a court, you shouldn't need to win your case with drama and emotions, but with cold hard facts. If you cannot provide those facts, you cannot win your case. In a real court what Jack said would be struck from the record in most cases because he or his lawyer could say he was now pressured to answer yes to the question.
It's astoundingly staggering that people miss the point of this scene. Jessup forged a signature, covered up a murder, pinned the blame on two Marines, and ultimately--committed perjury to keep his hands clean. He's trying to make Kaffee look like a bleeding heart while praising the hardships Marines go through to protect this country as an excuse for what he did. Seriously though, damn fine acting!

I do not like Tom Cruise very much, but I have to agree that this movie along with The Firm are his best movies, and show that he can act. The only over acting was in the way he drank the glass of water, he tried to over shake just so that the camera could capture the character's nervousness. Nicholson is way better, but this is a role he was just perfect for. I do not get tired of watching this over and over again, this is just one of the best movie scenes ever.
@@manuelvpr Cruise was excellent in "Rain Man" and "Born on the Fourth of July" as well. Those and the two you mention are by far his best 4 films in terms of serious acting.

Reading it alone, I'm honestly shaken by how well Nicholson made this performance his. No way in hell could I have acted this scene out half as well as if my life depended on it.
They shot it a dozen times because Bacon couldn't stop laughing...
Really? Not according to the DVD commentary track. He did perform this speech multiple times before his close up performance so the other actors had something to react to. Again, according to the DVD commentary.
+Aleatha Vogel
Aahhh, so THAT'S how they explained it away. Gotta send out some love to those post production folks who do the DVD commentaries. They're irreplaceable!! All the same, the actors did a knockout job on this scene and credit the director for patiently waiting until they did.
That's why he's paid the BIG BUCKS.
All hats off to Nicholson for sure, one of the greatest, but watching this scene again... is this ADR?
He is 85 years now... what a performance he gave here... truly a master of his trade.
Jack Nicholson should have won an oscar for this performance
people win Oscars every year for movies we all forget or never see - yet here we are, 20 something years later watching a clip of a truly memorable performance from one of the greatest actors alive. The Oscars will get things wrong often, but the people, remember the best movies for a long time. If I was an actor, I'd rather be remembered for my work, then get an Oscar and be one of the easily forgotten honored.
Kunaak Very well put sir.
Kunaak excellent
Um, I can name every oscar winning movie for the last 67 years and so can most.
Yes, that may be true but can you list every Oscar winning actor in Oscar winning movies? I remember this performance for his greatness. I can't remember every Oscar winning performance because I believe some winners shouldn't have won.
One of the greatest performances in cinematic history. All-time favourite from an all-time favourite actor.

1:01 I love how Kevin Bacon slowly sits down, knowing that he is about to lose the case.
That scene nowhere implies its there where he understood he's about to lose.
@@baheejmk7563 The Defendant outright yelled that he's guilty..and Bacon slowly sits down like it's over..idk how else to interpret that but as a sign of him knowing he's about to lose

Watching a proper example of it.
Jack was paid $5 million for three scenes only in 91/92. $10 million today inflation adjusted. It was definitely worth it. 💯💛

He did an Andy Griffith once as a normal guy…find it, I expected him to do more…

He's trying to make Kaffee look like a bleeding heart while praising the hardships Marines go through to protect this country as an excuse for what he did.

No actor could do a better job than Cruise, when it comes to acting as a young, cheeky but exceptionally talented lawyer. (also as in "The Firm" (1993) ) And this scene was 1000 times more energized thanks to the explosively professional acting by Nicholson, as usual.
He wasn't cheeky in The Firm though. He was calmer and collected and sorta innocent in that one.
