Billy did an interview where he was asked about the meaning of the song, because of the rumors of its possible drug reference, 'White Wedding' being cocaine. Billy said the song was written for his little sister when she was getting married. His inspiration was because of his feeling that he was losing the position of 'Protector' and she had someone new she wanted to watch over her and keep her safe. Thus the line, "Who's your Superman". Everyone for decades have looked for a hidden meaning to this song, but it's pretty straight forward.
Despite rumors to the contrary, this song is not about Idol's actual little sister. "Little sister" is slang for girlfriend. He is singing about a woman/girl he loves marrying someone else while he still loves her. Idol did have a sister who was getting married, but on an episode of VH1 Storytellers, he explained that his sister's wedding simply gave him the idea for the song. Like many of Idol's compositions, he started with the title and wrote the song from there. >>

The "shotgun" in the song is actually a reference to the term, "shotgun wedding," i.e. a wedding done in haste because the girl got pregnant. The shotgun is metaphorical (in most cases), and it isn't aimed at the girl, it's aimed at the guy.
Shotgun weddings were a real thing with actual shotguns. If a girl got pregnant, her family would literally hold the guy at gun point and force him to marry her. While it’s metaphorical these days, it was a literal thing back in the day.
@@brianoconnor7796 I think this song is definitely referring to the pregnancy meaning, though, with lines like "what have you done?" and "There's nothing pure in this world. '
On VH1 Storytellers, Billy said the song is about a girl he loves marrying someone else. His actual sister was getting married around this time and that only gave him the idea for writing this song. That's seriously old school. But, there's no school like Old School, amirite? You have a great Summer, and let us know how you do in the Fall when you reach Fourth Grade (I think he'll do fine).
I wouldn't overthink it for story. Sometimes one song can come together from many influences and the singer may be third person narrator. Videos don't always follow a logical or complte storyline, but sometimes present related images just for artistic effect. A shotgun wedding generally pertains to an unwed pregnancy and the family forcing the marriage. Supposedly Billy had the idea for the song when his sister was getting married though it was not a shotgun wedding.
You missed the mark on the interpretation of this one. The key word here is "Shotgun". It's literally about his little sister, not girlfriend, who got pregnant and now has to get married, aka Shotgun Wedding. Traditionally only virgins can wear white at a wedding so it's a mockery about her being pure and having a White Wedding. From reading comments in another music video reaction to this song my eyes were opened to the fact that the part in the video where she's on the operating table is supposed to represent an abortion (as well as the coffin) along with the lyrics "start again". The ring cutting her finger and other things in the video meant something deeper too, but I don't remember.

I always love it when your shoulders start to go! BTW Billy Idol does a one hour show on Sirus Radio Next Wave channel 33. It's really good because it reflects the actual punk rock scene of the late 70's and 80's which I participated in, in NYC. I've never asked you to react to a song but thinking of his show reminds me of the song RISE bt Public Image Limited or PIL which is Johnny Lydon's band after the Sex Pistols, and PIL is still a band 40 years later. Rise addressed Apartheid in South Africa.
Always thought Billy was frequently excluded from top artists of the 80s talk and minimum MTV exposure. Might have been the punk influence in the time of pop and glam metal.
Love love ❤️Billy Idol!!!! Check out Mony Mony - that’s a great song and video! Billy was the hottest guy on MTV. Me and millions of other women had mad crushes on him. Cool thing is that he’s still performing! Seeing him in Vegas this October. Thanks for doing this! Appreciate you Jamal!
Well, Jamel, song lyrics are rarely meant to be taken literarly.😏 When some are saying "brother" i know they don´t always actually mean their family sibling...😉 And on that note i´ve got to recommend "Little Sister" by Queens of the Stone Age!🤟🤪
No he actually is talking to his sister in the song. He's discussing the (implied in the lyrics) guy who got her pregnant. "Shotgun" wedding, hospital bed (probably an abortion, leaving her to start again)
Where does a bloke go to recommend songs for the brother Jamal? Because I need my man to react to Matt Corby singing 'Brother' (live for Like a Version) Been following you since the start of your channel big man, you're the best at what you do peace and love always 🙌
At least from what I’ve been told it was that white wedding was a pure wedding (virgininity) so was calling it fake since she wasn’t a virgin. I hope that made sense lol But I feel like I could be wrong 🤣
The white wedding dress was originally to symbolize a virgin bride. If you had a child or it wasn't your first wedding you were not supposed to wear white. Off white or cream for the "non virgins". I heard someone say they found a picture of their grandmother's wedding in Italy in the 40s. She had a black wedding dress. She was pregnant, brought shame to the family in a small village. What about the guy? She didn't do it alone.

Also, I don't think you used "karen" correctly. I would have gone with more of a know-it-all sort of thing, like "poindexter".
You need to take a listen to Billy when he was with Generation X, BTW keep up the reactions I look forward to them.
Check out Hot in the City, Mony Mony, Cradle of Love, Flesh For Fantasy, To Be A Lover, Sweet Sixteen.
Eyes without a face.
Oh, you'll be glad if you listen on stereo headphones. One of Steve's coolest solos.
"Elvis", little sisteristen to it.
Billy Idol,... I will always LOVE this Man!
Lol....I remember singing this in my car loud as can be and my son would sink down in the seat..lol ahh what memories.
lol
Mom in the 80s: Embarrassing son while singing along to “White Wedding.”
Son in 2021: Thinking how cool mom (really) was in the 80s 😉
Rebel Yell album from the 80s was about as good as it gets!! Please do
" Hot in the City" next✌✌✌
That running bassline is so Billy Idol...LOVE IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
You should watch a video of him doing this song live. That beginning part is iconic and will give you chills.
Oh yes..it was awesome
Will do.
Love the song but hate the video.
Dang, that video.
Reminds me why I use to hate videos,
Just teen fantasy.
Lyrics and theme,meh...
But let's bev real, it's that guitar at 3:02 that fries stuff. Yass!
early mtv was a time of experimentation. there were no rules.
I appreciate Billy so much more now than I did in the 80s. He is awesome! (and he was my first concert ever!)
Nice One Jamel. Love me some Billy Idol. I know you've checked out a few of the popular songs. Check out "Flesh For Fantasy", "Mony Mony","Cradle of Love ","L.A. Woman"(cover) if you haven't already?
I always love it when your shoulders start to go! BTW Billy Idol does a one hour show on Sirus Radio Next Wave channel 33. It's really good because it reflects the actual punk rock scene of the late 70's and 80's which I participated in, in NYC. I've never asked you to react to a song but thinking of his show reminds me of the song RISE bt Public Image Limited or PIL which is Johnny Lydon's band after the Sex Pistols, and PIL is still a band 40 years later. Rise addressed Apartheid in South Africa.
Have u listened to his unplugged songs?
Always thought Billy was frequently excluded from top artists of the 80s talk and minimum MTV exposure. Might have been the punk influence in the time of pop and glam metal.
Love love ❤️Billy Idol!!!! Check out Mony Mony - that’s a great song and video! Billy was the hottest guy on MTV. Me and millions of other women had mad crushes on him. Cool thing is that he’s still performing! Seeing him in Vegas this October.
Thanks for doing this! Appreciate you Jamal!
Another great reaction ! I could watch your reactions all day long ! PLZ don't ever STOP ! 💓💓💓
Well, Jamel, song lyrics are rarely meant to be taken literarly.😏
When some are saying "brother" i know they don´t always actually mean their family sibling...😉
And on that note i´ve got to recommend "Little Sister" by Queens of the Stone Age!🤟🤪
Actually this song is about Billy Idol's Sister. Billy didn't approve of a marriage she was getting into.
No he actually is talking to his sister in the song. He's discussing the (implied in the lyrics) guy who got her pregnant. "Shotgun" wedding, hospital bed (probably an abortion, leaving her to start again)
Where does a bloke go to recommend songs for the brother Jamal? Because I need my man to react to Matt Corby singing 'Brother' (live for Like a Version)
Been following you since the start of your channel big man, you're the best at what you do peace and love always 🙌
@@adc2327 yeah that’s what I was trying to say lol
@@adc2327 but do agree but back then I see that happening
Billy Idol is synonymous with the 80's. If you look up "The 80's" his picture would be next to it!! 🤘
