Yup. Hello. Worked to put someone in federal prison before. Quite a challenge. Shouldn't be our job, but here we are. Morgan has a very good case here, but unfortunately no arrests are going to be made until violence against a person occurs. Our system is broken in that regard, we can prove this by looking at most domestic violence situations, no arrests happen until someone ends up in the hospital with witnesses to the violence. Morgan and his family would benefit from changing the reporting system in Vermont into an information escrow. Jessica Ladd has one. She did a 6 minute ted talk about it, it's still up on youtube. It's not impossible to slow down the butch's of the world from doing irreparable harm to innocent people. Ask a leader, any leader, for an information escrow to report bad or criminal behavior. Reminder that making false reports is a crime. People like Butch won't have video evidence of violence, because we are not violent people. Morgan has a firestick tossed into a loft of tinder, recorded. What does Butch have? Let him make false reports and let us find out his footage of violence has to be faked. Get that reporting system, you deserve it.
Sadly it's the What's in it for Me, and if it's not for Me, then who is taking from Me mentality, or the Rules for thee, but not for Me! Hound hunters could do the right thing by training their dogs on command to immediately stop and return to them if the animals they are pursuing goes onto private land, but that's too much work, it's better (in their lazy heads) to intimidate than be respectful. It's a dangerous mentality that is hard to diffuse and worse, the politicians refuse to get involved when they should be taking action against those who think they can do whatever they want. Sad
I've said this before, but as a trainer who has specifically trained working dogs with insanely high prey drive, these hunters are full of the brown stuff when they say their dogs can't be taught to stop and return to them mid-chase. This is the number one excuse I hear from old school hunters: that once these dogs are on the chase, the only way to stop them is to physically pull them off of it. Using that logic, they claim that the only way to guarantee their dogs don't go on private property would be to outlaw hound hunting altogether, which to them is unacceptable. Again, this is bullcr*p. Even putting my own experience aside, there are videos on YT of other hound hunters - including those who hunt at great distances from their dogs, just like Butch does - who successfully train their dogs to recall mid-hunt, and they do so with just a few days' effort per dog. These hunters use loud whistles that are designed to be heard miles away, and train their dogs to immediately stop and come whenever they hear said whistle. They begin training the dogs while young, and it only takes a couple days for their dogs to learn. The more dogs in each pack who have been taught this, the easier it becomes to teach the others. Heck, I saw one video where a hunter not only showed how easy it is to train this recall, he even took the camera with him on a hunt and showed his dogs stopping literally mid-chase (hot on the heels of a deer) to run straight to him upon hearing the whistle. Every single dog obeyed, instantly. You can't argue with those results. The solution to this isn't to ban hound hunting. The solution is to require hound hunters to have *true* control over their dogs at all times, with heavy penalties for failing to control said dogs as needed. All these hunters need to do is spend a few days teaching each dog to recall to a whistle, then utilize their GPS trackers to monitor their dogs' location and immediately recall them if the pack begins to head toward property they're not allowed to hunt on. Easy peasy. But hunters like Butch like to pretend that's impossible, or that it's too much to ask of them to put forth such a minimal amount of effort to respect the property rights they claim to value so much (at least when it comes to their own property). Butch is wrong. And if he and others like him don't want hound hunting eventually made illegal (as it will be if hounds continue running out of control on people's private property, attacking domesticated animals and people alike), they need to change. They have all the tools necessary to enact that change. The public simply needs to pressure lawmakers to force them to do so. For everybody's sake. Side note: As for hunters believing they should have the right to violate other people's property rights - even temporarily - simply because they can't control their dogs (or "can't control the bear the dogs are chasing," as Butch puts it), I'd like to remind people that even individuals with life threatening disabilities who rely on highly trained service dogs to keep them alive have strict limitations on their right to be accompanied by said dogs. In particular, they must maintain full control of their canine partners at all times, and guess what? They're not allowed to bring their service dogs onto private property without the owner's permission. If even someone whose life depends on having their incredibly highly trained dog with them doesn't have the right to violate a property owner's wishes, why the heck should hunters have that right just to partake in a hobby that's completely voluntary? That's pure craziness.
if the dogs attack the Morgan's chickens you wouldn't know that and wouldn't know to call them back even if they were trained to come back when signaled. To be in control of your animal you need to be present not be miles away.
I agree, and for the rare cases that a dog legitimately can't be called of off something, then that dog just shouldn't be used for hunting like this. Although you are very wrong about service dog laws. You cannot prevent someone from having a service dog with them just because it is private property. You can only tell the person they're not welcome as a whole and even then the ADA still protects people from being disallowed entry for being disabled and having a service dog when it is a business or place of service. (as in the location provides a service) If you tell someone not to come to your house which is used solely as a place of living then that is fine since the ada doesn't just give disabled people the right to go into people's houses uninvited
Butch might single handedly be a catalyst that changes the hound hunting laws. His behavior is evidence that land owners need additional protection of their rights.
In almost any other state it is a felony to hunt on private property. In many states as soon as you step on private property with a firearm without the owner’s permission you will go to jail.

I think you're right in that they probably didn't INTEND to murder him, but if they had been successful and someone died because of that arson, I think they could go down for murder. They're purposefully endangering the lives of people at that point. Super not okay.
@@lightup6751 Dying in house fires that start overnight is one of the most common ways to die from a fire. The perpetrators had to know that was a possible outcome when they attempted to burn both their house and barn down. So yeah, if the house had caught on fire and they died in that fire, murder would have been one of the charges. Even setting a building on fire when you believe no one is inside can still get a person an attempted murder charge. I know of someone who set his ex-girlfriend's house on fire when he believed she was at work. He was caught and was charged and convicted with arson and attempted murder. The prosecution argued successfully that he didn't make sure there was no one in the house when he set it on fire.
We lost a barn to a fire bug years and years ago. Hay was stored in the loft..we lost draft horses, cows, pigs, and a slew of differnt kinds of birds. I'm happy they missed the window. Scary doesn't being to cover it 😢 You should think about hiding a camera in the trees by the road for exactly this reason. Imagine if the owner of the blue truck came back with his buddy's sedan 🤦🏼♀️
That's not attempted arson, it's attempted murder. They knew exactly what they were doing, and how easily any fire could of spread to your house and caused a tragedy. In some states Arson have different degrees and arson of structure where people live or work are usually the highest degree. In NYS Arson 1st degree holds the same penalty as attempted murder.
As a Texan, it is shocking that they can go onto anyone's property to hunt without the owner permission. Here in the Lone Star State that would get u and your dog shot and the property owner wouldn't face any issues for doing it. Especially if it's a ranch/farm. No dog, let alone a hunting one, should be so untrained that they can't b recalled. Absolutely mind blowing.
There is a huge cultural difference in the attitudes toward private property in New England. I grew up in Maine, it's very similar. If you wanted people to stay off your land, it was incumbent upon you to post it. I don't remember the exact specifications for the posting, but it was something similar to what is described here. If it wasn't posted, you were free to hunt on it. Honestly, I never really questioned it, because that's what I grew up with. It really wasn't until I became an adult and moved west (obviously, can't really move East from Maine) that I realized that things were different elsewhere.
Same thing in Iowa. Only there doesn't need to be any posting. You need to have the express permission from the owner, lessee, or person in lawful possession in order to hunt on their land. And if the owner, lessee, or person in lawful possession asks them to leave? You have to leave immediately. The only exception is if the animal you wounded dies on someone else's property, you are allowed to enter the property _unarmed_ to retrieve the animal. That's it. You are not allowed to carry bows or guns onto someone else's property to retrieve the animal. Edit: I should add that hunting with dogs in Iowa is only allowed if the dogs remain on a lead the entire time. Precisely because ppl (like Butch) don't have control of their dogs.
Write to your representatives! I am a Vermont resident and have been keeping an eye on this issue since a couple and their dog were attacked for half an hour by a pack of bear hunting hounds in my county in 2019, this is in no way ok and the hostility being shown by these hunters to other Vermonters, (I don't care that you moved here, you live here so you are a Vermonter and your voice matters when discussing Vermont issues) is unacceptable. I am Working on that letter now. If enough people complain they have to address the issue, and don't let their harassments stop you, they know they are in the wrong so their only response is violence.

I'd honestly consider filing a restraining order against this hound hunter. You have enough to show a history of harassment with him and even a temporary order would keep him away from your property while this gets battled out in court.

I’d say “fuck the police; don’t trust em, don’t deal with em” and just jump straight to getting lawyers and more cameras. Document the damages done, both to the farm and to your (Morgan’s) person. Why “fuck the police?” Because number one, ACAB, and number two, there’s a VERY strong possibility that the officers will be hound hunters themselves, thus they will be less likely to bring charges against whomever tried to burn down your barn. Even if they do, it’s not unlikely that they’d only receive a fine of some kind, even with a successful arson charge. TL;DR: Don’t bother going to the police with this. Get a lawyer instead.
I used to work for a group that trains working dogs. One of the biggest things we trained for was recall. It is really important to recall your dog at a moment’s notice. Those people don’t want to control their animals. Clearly, they don’t want to respect private property.
I doubt that Butch and similar hound hunters see the need to train for recall, even if they know what it is. They've never had to worry about it, so why should they have to content with the training or dealing with some 'non-farmer' farmer who just wants to stop them from doing what they've always done. (Un)fortunately, the hound hunters might eventually find themselves dragged into the 21st century, whether they like it or not. Especially if they continue to operate as they always have done - or behave even worse...

If Butch and his cronies cause significant property damage to Morgan's or his neighbours' property, then and only then will they take action. There are several things Morgan will need to do; install a gate, install discrete cameras in front of his driveway to screen who comes onto his property, he will need to have positive identification of any and all trespassers on his property for a restraining order, he will also have to file a suit for damage to his property and make sure he asks for restitution in the millions of dollars.

Morgan, I don't think that talking will solve your issue in the face of entitled, arrogant, and blinkered people. When I had the shop, I had an intimidation issue with a group of teenagers. I diarised and reported every incident to the police and made myself an orderly but utter nuisance until such time as they put my premises under surveillance and saw what was happening for themselves. It's important to add cameras facing both the entrance and exit roads of your property. Doing so will capture the faces of cars and people when they are up to no good. Additionally, it may be time to consider adding a large front gate to keep people off of your farm. Remember, the most important things to protect are not your possessions, but yourself and those you love.
Butch and his group are extremely scary. They seem like people that resort to violence when their hunting methods are called out. The driving by your house and honking is enough to tell me that they're not afraid to escalate. I know I couldn't handle that level of harassment.. not to mention this mysterious arson attempt.. i’ve installed security cameras for 19 yrs. we can put 2 license plate reading cameras at the road. they are ment to capture at night and at high speed vehicles. if they cover up the plates you will have a great shot even at night of the vehicle.. we do direct bury cable to the road and mount the cameras on a 4x4 pole. i’ve got cameras on my mail box facing one way down the road and the other way down the road. use conduit to protect any exposed wires. use a back up camera off the house with a zoomed in lens to cover those road side cameras. that way if the road side cameras are tampered with you will have a great shot of them doing so. We can also install a light right over the cameras to light up the area real good. criminals don’t like bright lights. we can do a motion sensor light that will light up the entire neighbor hood. also a large spot light will make it easier to alert you someone is there. I keep a monitor in my living room thats always on with a wireless mouse that controls the cameras. not a cheap set up but your life is worth it. if you message me i’ll try to help you out as much as i can with security pointers and advice. I can’t stand bullies and people who try to burn your home down.
I cannot believe that it is legal to allow dogs and people free range across anyone’s property for hound hunting. Vermont should change those laws immediately. It makes no sense whatsoever.

A friend of my parents got death threats in the mail just for posting her property! Apparently it was some guys’ “special hunting spot”, her property is 18 acres of a stretch of mostly unbroken forest that goes on for thousands and thousands of acres I can’t imagine it was so special it was necessary to send death threats! The entitlement of a lot of old Vermonters absolutely baffles me.
I feel bad so many have lost their land because people buy it where it use to be public for them especially with the costs I can’t help but feel bad I don’t think threats are ok, but I feel terrible so many were born and raised somewhere that others now come in and completely change

They may be closer to the lore of the “original” white settlers who started owning, parceling and controlling land but that was a step on a culture’s cancerous consumption of nature. They might not like how grandpappy’s farm from the 1870s is now a gas station or target parking lot but they lost the actual plot when they gave in to entitlement, racism, patriarchy and violence as bedtime stories. I’ve known her my whole life and she’s basically as “vermonty” as they come. I commend you for standing up for what's right. Butch seems to represent an antiquated way of living based on his hunting style and attitude. It was really interesting that he spoke with maturity mixed with self-righteous indignation about sitting down and talking, then moments later ranted about stripping others of outdoor activities if he didn't get his way. As other commenters have stated, I can't imagine what he'd do if you stepped foot on his property, but he's fine coming on yours with a team of men and hounds. As you say, you gave visibility to a traditional activity, and sometimes tradition must die as society moves forward.
After announcing to the internet how close they came to burning down your barn, and exactly where they should aim if they want to try again, maybe you should put some wire mesh over that window to prevent anything else from being able to be fired through it. Morgan, to be honest, I think this is going to escalate until these people manage to hurt you/your wife or cause dramatic damage to your property. People like this do not back off until they are forced to through sheer will, and you've managed to kick a wasps nest. I believe you to have a valid argument, but, frankly, you had no idea what you were walking into. Situations like this require you to think like them. NOT stoop to their level, just understand what's coming. To that degree, my husband had a brilliant idea that can at least frustrate them enough to leave your property alone. Along with the required postings, or with a larger spread, put up alarm systems (that they cannot get to/find, high up, etc.). When you get a notification that there is something on the property, set off the alarm. That will alert the animals and completely ruin their hunt. Ruin it enough times, they may not hunt your property anymore. It would also alert your neighbors to be aware there are people on their properties and help them out as well. Additionally, I agree with other posters, with all of the documentation you've done, there is a case for a protection order against Butch himself. And, I would make sure to tighten up the barn so another flare doesn't hit it's mark along with moving hay bales and such so they don't have any other large targets. While you don't think this is how society should function, it's how it is at the moment. Please, for the sake of everyone that cares about you, treat this as a tactical situation to protect your farm and family.

Very well said chattygreenwig. Butch has shown himself to be nothing but unreasonable, confrontational and argumentative. A restraining order is a good first step. Noise makers in the woods is indeed a brilliant idea. That Morgan has to arrange his life around these derelicts is truly unfortunate.

Truthfully, I saw this coming a mile away, I'm just surprised Morgan didn't mention it sooner. Obviously, there needs to be some kind of legal intervention at this point to put a stop to it. Men like Butch can never be reasoned with because bullies can't be reasoned with. That I think was Morgan's first mistake. I once heard someone say that the reason people bully others is because they feel poweless and insecure about themselves. I think that's true. I suspect that these hound hunters feel a sense of powerlessness in their lives which is why I think that deep down they secretly get off of the sense of power and control they feel from going on other people's property with dogs to hunt a defenseless creature that can't fight back against them. Of course, now that everybody knows what they are doing on the Internet, they are lashing out at Morgan instead of taking accountability for their actions. They think that Morgan took away the one thing they had that made them feel better about themselves, and they don't like it one bit. They don't see themselves as doing anything wrong because bullies don't have any empathy or sympathy for those who they prey upon. Which is why you can't have an honest conversation with people like this because they think they are entitled to keep harming others. It's immature, selfish, and stupid. Just to prove my point, i think that is the reason why Butch has been going by Morgan's property. He had no reason to be there at all. Unfortunately all this goes down to cost. Morgan could have been better prepared with more cameras, for example along the road to record the license plates, and then the culprit would have been caught. Or not, if they prepared themselves and cover the plates. Or he could took legal action and interdict to that moron to come closer than 50 miles of his property. But all this comes down to cost. You cannot afford to have a perfect defense. And bullies knows that. And if you act weak and defensive they will come at you until they die. They will never stop. They will stop only got hit hard enough to go through their thick skull, or when it cost them too much. I know this, because I had my shares of bullies, one being my own brother. No matter how much you bend the knee, or lower you head, the bully will want more. Power of example does not work. And we see this all over the place, from individual examples liker my brother, to super powers.
@ehombane If he, at the very least, has a restraining order put into place, it would help to nip a lot of this behavior in the bud because he doesn't live in the same county as Morgan so he would have no choice but to stay away or risk running afoul of the law. I think that Morgan has more than enough video evidence to show that Butch is harassing him. It may not stop the other people, but at least it will keep Butch away.
That wouldn't change the hounder's attitude b/c as Butch said, "dogs cant read posting signs" so of course the hounder's feel free to walk onto any property, posted or not, on the pretext of retrieving their dogs.

What they NEED to adopt are consequences for trespassing. According to the list that Morgan shared at some point in the video, #4 seems to state that there are none.
@@mehtarelingolien can’t punish what isn’t illegal. The law as written is heavily presumptive in favor of the hound hunter and the burden is on the landowner to overcome that hurdle. That makes punishment functionally an apology without an enforceable promise to try and not do it again. Again being later that same day. Because of that it isn’t worth it to authorities to even try to protect landowners.
Butch needs to understand that if he doesn’t want his dogs taken or shot then he should keep them away from your farm and other people’s farms. My family’s herd of goats were massacred by a group a 3 pet dogs that just wouldn’t stop. The one that we couldn’t get kept returning over a few days to try to kill more. Their owner was furious when we told them where their bodies could be found, and told us they could have stopped them, but we tried. Couldn’t distract them. It was horribly sad but that’s what happens when you let your animals run around off leash in other people’s land. You don’t know what they’ll do, and what lives they’ll ruin. We had to bury 35 beloved pets in one night because of irresponsible dog owners.

I own a farm in Virginia where our laws are a little more strict then Vermont's. However, we have run ins with bear hunters every year. Every bear season, we have to go into lock down with our free range animals becuase we have had hunting dogs chase after our livestock. Another thing not mentioned in your videos are that these hunters run those poor bears miles and miles across mountains, valleys, forests and fields just to be bitten everytime it has to slow down due to exhaustion. This is not even close to be humane in anyway at all. In fact I would ho as far as call it a sever animal cruelty. I'm a hunter, I am also very supportive of our rights, trespassing on others land is not a right, it is a violation of other's right of personal property.
It sounds like you’re not from but moved to Virginia? Morgan should’ve locked his animals up too. He purchased land in a cheaper state. The laws did not change after he moved there. Maybe he should’ve ran some numbers on what a better fence would cost.

They dont rent it. I have posted no trespassing signs all over my property. The law states They are not allowed to come onto my land unless I give them permission to. The law also says that if a dog is on my land and gives chase or damages my livestock, I have every right to shoot that dog and demand restitution. That is Virginia Law. Just because some bear hunters who, btw quite a few are from out of state, run their dogs onto my property because they want to doesnt give them the right to do so. Period. I have the law on my side and I am not an a$$hole who wants to kill dogs just because their owners are inconsiderate self-centered jerks.

Dogs can’t read no trespassing signs but people can read the laws that an area has before they move there. I do think if the dog kills your animals you should be able to get payment. I also don’t think the hunters should be able to come into your property to release dogs and have hunters on your land without your permission. If they are on a neighboring property that they have rights to hunt and the dogs come onto your property though people can’t act surprised when they moved to an area that allows that and has been a way of life for a long time. I’m not saying hunters should be able to use your land as their own but I am saying that if you buy in an area where dog hunting is allowed then don’t be surprised when people want to come get their dogs. Morgan seems to have a colonizer mentality. He moved somewhere most likely due to lower prices. Now he wants to have the laws changed because he doesn’t agree with the culture that has been in the area for a long time. I’m sure he isn’t the only person that owns property in the area that doesn’t hunt with dogs and has dogs come into his property. For whatever reason the locals that own land and don’t dog hunt haven’t tried to get dog hunting banned. This is why people from small towns don’t like people from out of town moving in. It’s not that they don’t like them for coming from somewhere else. It’s because many times they will try to change the communities culture and way of life that has existed long before they decided to move to the community. It would have probably been in his interest to try to talk to the hunting club in his area and ask them to let him know before they hunt in that area so he could put his animals up. Hunting season is only a limited time and most of the time hunters are out on the weekend. Not always but most of the time people will work with you if you work with them. There is always a bad apple in every group though. If people absolutely do not want dogs coming in their property they could always pay for nicer fencing. That would cost a lot of money but then there would be no reason for dogs to be on your property.
I'm surprised that Butch hasn't been arrested yet! He seems to have a total disregard for your rights and the rights of any other farmers he comes across. The fact that he has multiple videos showing him coming into conflict with people is rather frightening as well considering how many people may not have recorded their encounters.
@@varukasalt I have a low opinion of the police in terms of their organizations due to the prevalence of misconduct and lack of accountability, just for starters, but assuming that individual officers are acting out of malice because assholes like Butch aren't getting arrested isn't a good place to do any thinking from. As Hanlon's Razor says, never assume malice or conspiracy when it can be explained by laziness or incompetence. But the real problem with your comment I will point out with this question, arrest him on what charges? Whatever the charge you choose, can you offer up enough evidence to obtain a conviction in front of a jury? Unless you can point to the existence of such evidence, making such an arrest would be an act of...police misconduct. Worse, that would let the Butches out there portray themselves as victims of official oppression due to false arrest. Calling for the police to act illegally to help Butch make hay about being targeted is the opposite of helpful.

First, I have to say that I believe that the attempt to burn down the barn could be labeled as ATTEMPTED MURDER. If it caught fire, it would have gone over to the house while you were asleep and killed you all. This reminds me a lot of the coyote hound hunters here in Oklahoma. We've had a lot of problems with those hunters letting loose their dogs on coyotes in properties with cows in them; then having to go after the dogs and cutting the fences, which then lets cows out and when they drive into fields. I am a hunter, however the use of dogs to tear apart a creature even such as a coyote, is horrible. I understand that controlling populations is a thing that we now have to do to try and keep the ecosystem intact after we messed it all up, but that doesn't negate the fact that you're letting loose dogs you have no control of to chase down a creature that isn't even on property you own.
@ellisfamilyfarms8961 South Western Oklahoma. It's not talked about much if at all, but I know some ranchers that have problems with them. When out driving around to see if I can find coyotes to take photos of, I've caught multiple hunters with dogs loose or in their crates and slowing along cow fields that are known for having coyote dens nearby.

If it is a public road, all states permit you to film things easily seen from the road way (ie in clear line of sight from a person). So, Morgan was well within his rights to film. And it wouldn't count as harassment as 1) Morgan lives there and 2) Morgan had a legitimate reason to approach him. Entitled people feel harassed when other people exercise their rights.
So, I'm in Georgia and I'm intrigued to know what the flip side of the laws are that protect Morgan. You can bear hunt with dogs in Georgia during the specific dog bear hunting season and you have to have the appropriate licensure and tags for the bears to do so. It needs to be on public or state property or you need the express consent from private property owners. On the flip side, there are places in Georgia where you're required to own a gun if you're a property owner, dogs are legally considered weapons, and if it's on your private property you are legally able to shoot to kill. Especially a posted farm with "no trespassing" signs, if you are caught hunting on that farm without permission the farmer could not only kill the dogs without penalty on site, but if the hunter is deep enough onto the farmer's land for the farmer to argue that the hunter is an armed individual harming/killing my livestock deep on the private property while trespassing, he'd have grounds to shoot the hunter to. These legal hunting protections with weaponry go both ways in my state, so the farmer can protect their land/livestock but the hunters are also protected if they're abiding by the laws. I know Morgan wouldn't WANT to shoot a dog, but if if this were in Georgia Morgan would have had 100% rights to kill the hunting dogs trespassing on his goose farm on site.

I have a little corgi puppy that at 4 months while walking on a leash was suddenly grabbed by a random German short haired pointer. I had not seen the dog coming, the owner had to beat his dog off my puppy. He needed stichs along his throat. The owner was the most uncaring person on the planet saying his dog must have mistaked mine for a fox. I swear these disgusting people are absolute hypocrits. Screaming about how their rights are above everyone elses. The right to hunt = the right to trespass? I saddly don't think people this caught up in their obesssions can be reasoned with. You don't deserve any of this and we are sending you all the love.
I sincerely hope that you got that owner to pay for medical bills, and reported him to the police. I have a 3-month old puppy myself, and while he's one of the bigger dogs, I did own tiny breeds most my life. I can't even imagine another dog attacking one of mine. I hope that you and the pup are both okay.
Seem to me the quickest solution to the Butch problem is to just file a restraining order against him. No police involvement is required, you just need a lawyer (which I assume you already have) to draft the filing and a court date. You already have enough video evidence to make your case. An alternative albeit much slower solution is to get your neighbors together and file a class action lawsuit against the Country, F&W Dept., and the Governor. Good Luck.
Class action seems like a good idea considering they're trespassing on the neighbors property as well. If the whole neighborhood wants you gone you either escalate and land your butt in jail or finally just bugger off.
The other issue is where the hunt starts from, it has to start from a legal location. I assume there is some state or federal land nearby? You can't start your hunt on someone else's private property without permission.
I definitely encourage you to take legal action in whatever way you can. This is getting pretty concerning. Talk to a lawyer and the police to see what you can do about this situation, especially since he is harassing you and someone attempted to catch your barn on fire.
I agree, and being a transplant to VT, enlisting the help of neighbors who may be Vermonters by birth, may go a long way in encouraging law enforcement to listen.
At the end of the day it's ultimately up to the hunter, hound or otherwise, to ensure they're not trespassing on property that forbids any sort of hunting. The fact that they keep showing up is clear indication that they're trying to antagonize and intimidate you, and just based on the video of him being so confrontational when you drove up should be enough to get some sort of legal ball rolling. He's been informed several times he cannot be on your land hunting, your property is posted, it's time to consider the legal angle.

You’re a better person than me. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, someone lets a pack of dogs aggressively run loose on my land… they aren’t getting them back alive. If i had land/farm animals to protect no unwanted dog would run loose putting my stock in danger. If i post no trespassing, don’t trespass unless you wanna reap the repercussions. Do you not see the irony in your statement? They aren’t allowed to release dogs on your property just retrieve them. If that is too big of a deal for someone they should not buy property and start a farm where dog hunting is allowed. You can always spend extra money to put in better fences to keep dogs out. However morgan didn’t do that. He moved to an area most likely for cheaper land prices that has always allowed dog hunting. He did not spend the extra money for fences that would keep hunting dogs out and now he is trying to get something banned that has been part of the local community for a long time.
@@billylove7008 so you think it is ok for a handful of hobby hunters to trespass and harass land/property owners because farmers don't have every inch of their land fenced, trying to allow wild animals access to lands for them to live on... if you watch other videos on this subject, one he's adressed the problems with fencing the entire property boundries, plus the hunters are allowed to release their dogs where ever they like - ie they don't drop them off ON his property, but in the middle of the road in front of his / his neighbor's property, and can be 2+ miles away using gps tracking to follow their dogs thru other people's properties - claiming they follow the law of "being in controls of the dogs" via a gps signal instead of physically in controls of them. if the property owner tries to stop them from hunting on their land the land owner can be fined for it. Essentially the hunters HAVE been given a green light to legally trespass and hunt on land even if it is posted no trespassing/hunting. Neither Bruce/the people he brings with him or the raccoon hunters that were on his land (basically right at his house) are from the area, they go out of their way to go to properties that aren't their own or even in the city they live in, release their dogs and do whatever they want. In almost any other state all you have to do is post no trespassing and you can legally go after the hunters for trespassing (ie run them off, run off their dogs or take them to court if they keep coming back), where they are if he tried he'd be the one in trouble, as in if gets in the way and stops the hunters/dogs in any way - much as the lady who pepper sprayed the ones on her property. Bruce and his buddies intentially continue to go to Morgan's property and the neighboring properties - after being told to stay out many times. And you really think that even if it was cost effective, that Bruce and his asshat buddies wanted to hunt fenced lands they wuldn't just rip them down if their dogs tracked an animal to the fence, they would. Not to mention, there are a lot more people calling to end the free running dog hunting, than there are that are doing it/want it. But hunters will make the most noise and band together to keep their little hobby going. They aren't calling for the end of hunting, just being allowed to release free running dogs to go whereever the hell they want... would you defend it if they happen to run thru someoen's property and cause the injury to a child??? because their front yard wasn't fenced.... because they had an open driveway the dogs ran up.... property OWNER'S should have more rights than trespassers.
I would think if Butch dislikes you so much and wants nothing to do with you(or so he says), he would take more care to keep the dogs away from Peacham to reduce the chance of interaction with you. First I don't live anywhere near Vermont and good luck with your situation. My daughter is now 36 years old, but when she was small, all the way up until she was in her middle to late teens she could not go in our yard, front or back, or anywhere on our 18 acres by herself. It just wasn't safe! We always had to worry about other people's dogs. Not only did we have to worry about the hunting dogs that where never tought to read no trespassing signs, but we also had to worry about those unwanted dumped dogs and the dogs on neighboring properties on near by road who packed up after there owners left for work each morning then ran the woods. Those packed up dogs attacked the pigs in their pins and ran the goats in their pins till they dropped dead of heart attacks or the dogs just ripped out their throats. The dogs never eat what they killed, they just killed for the joy of the hunt. Make no mistake animals do kill for the joy of the hunt without eating what they kill. I was told by deer hunters that their dogs couldn't read and I said it was not my fault that they didn't train their dogs better. My child's life and the lives of my animals on my family land out trumps the lives of your dogs. Did I forget tell you about all the lovely flower beds we have on our land? It's amazing just how rich red sand and clay can be.
I live in Indiana and own a farm. I also own a hunting camp in upper Michigan. That being said, the laws are so different here. In Indiana, a hunter can only enter private land to retrieve their dog. If the animals have harassed or injured any farm animals, the owner can elect to have them killed. So most hunters ask for permission first and call the day of a hunt. We all work together. In upper Michigan things get even tougher for trespassers. If it's not your land, don't set foot on it. In a area whare kids have guns in there bus stops for bears and have been going through gun safety sense they were four, you don't trespass. Lol With all the hunters there in Vermont, I am surprised that the laws are so antiquated.
I know this isn't what you meant, but I read that as if a hunter's dog harasses or injures a farm animal, the farm owner can elect to have the HUNTER unalived. I was like "well, THAT would indeed solve the problem!" I'm not sure who get unalived still, but pretty sure Indiana isn't out there summarily unaliving hunters...... Or maybe.....

The morality of hound hunting is for me personally besides the point, if we ban hound hunting, then we need to ban all sorts of other forms of hunting as well. The real issue is land rights and whether it's okay to threaten other people's livelihood by hound hunting near their animals. The attempted attacks on your property meanwhile are straight up criminal, and the culture that motivated that sort of behavior is a disgrace.
You should be concerned and start using your vote to express it. Head of Fish and Game has been ignoring Morgan for years. This isn't new news to them. Did the same thing as Butch, promised him a meeting then ghosted.

Since local law enforcement is so weak there, it's time to turn to state and federal enforcement. Reach out to your elected officials in Washington. This is not a small problem and not yours alone to fight. That flare incident changed the direction of this forever. This is not about hunting anymore.
I really thought they had calmed down with their harassment these past couple of years... We live in another state not near VT. We too have a barn and land. We have had to deal with unauthorized hunters coming on our land. One time a goose hunter was about to shoot over my head while I was taking a walk. I think the suggestions to protect your barn as much as possible is a good idea. The cameras you put out seem to catch a lot of the events too. But, making people aware of what is happening in a public way seems to be the way to keep this issue before the public and legislators.
The bravery to post this video tells me you have it in you to save any mommy cow that needs a calf pulling, Morgan. You can do this. You are the Daryl Davis for Vermont farmers. Its not just your property this is happening to, these guys are going after anyone with land it seems. The fact that local law enforcement can't or won't do anything to fix this is appallingly. The governor seems complicit as well so if anything they should be getting the phone calls. Butch is a product of that environment.

@@noah.r.stewart6666 That was when it was necessary. It isn't any longer. Hunting is just a sport now, for all but those who really NEED to put food on the table, literally, or starve. But those situations are very few and far between today. I doubt Butch and his buddies with their big trucks and dogs, really need to hunt that bear, to feed a starving family.
As a protective measure for your barn, maybe you can cover the window openings with something to keep things being thrown into the barn. That video of the fire incident was scary.
If you don't need air going through the window, you can use acrylic sheeting. Optix is a brand that is sold at Home Depot. It is clear like glass or plexi, but it won't shatter.
I think you need cameras that are not on wifi or Bluetooth in parallel with the cameras you have now. It’s not hard to jam signals. But there is a place for old school DVR
if the window is an access point for the cats and/or escape point, you can create a magnetic cat door type cover to prevent most things from entering the barn through the window and still allow the cats access it should work even with semi-flexible materials that would allow air flow.
I think it is time for you to ask for a protection order from the court so that Butch (and anyone else you can identify) cannot be within at least a mile of your property or passing by on the public road in front of your home and the order should also specify his dogs cannot be a released by him near you because he can't control them. He seems to think he has a right to follow his dogs anywhere no matter what. That way the police can act if you find him hanging around. He obviously doesn't want to "talk" but believes you are an outsider with no right in the State of Vermont. How sad is that? He should just go hunting someplace else and the whole matter would get put to rest. And as for you not being a "farmer," what does he think the cattle and pigs are? Just because some of your livestock is smaller, Butch certainly can't deny you have cattle and make your living from your "farm." I'd also put better cameras up out front so that a positive identification can be made of who might be trying to damage your farm house and barns from the road. I don't know about Vermont but the state I live in would consider that attempted murder. Please stay safe because your calm voice of reason doesn't seem to be working.
At the time he had neither pigs nor cattle. That doesnt mean Morgan is any less a farmer but you can see when someone needs cheap attacks against another how they can construct that insult

Don't know VT Law, but seems like most states you cant get an order of protection without first getting separate legal charges filed. Usually it would have to be like one would have to be charged with harassment, assault, trespassing etc and then you'd be able to. I do agree that he should get a really good camera or two (if legally allowed) that is good enough quality that can read license plates of vehicles, any time of day, that pass by the farm
@@definitelynotatwork From the sound of it, they took out the camera by the road, so he'd probably need more than one. Edit: IA law on protective orders just requires heading down to the county courthouse and submitting it. Altho depending on exactly why you're filing a protective order, you may need a police report or other evidence to back you up. I looked it up recently for a friend who was being stalked and harassed by a guy who lived in the same building as her.
As a free range poultry farmer, I couldn’t even imagine this!! People have let their dogs on my property but came over immediately when notified and retrieved their dog. They were very friendly to me however and it never happend again. These people near you need to buy their own farms and hunt on their own properties. The entitlement those men have is unreal.

It blows me away the law allows people like this to come into your property with guns to kill your wildlife. Then they try to burn your barn down? Where are the cops?!
They're busy pulling over old ladies on dark , completely unoccupied country roads, to give them tickets for ,allegedly, driving through a stop sign, at 2:00 in the morning, as they drive home to NY after visiting a son who had been in a car accident. In my state, trespassing while hunting you will lose your hunting license. Push for harder property rights. I moved back to the farm about 12 years ago and found others had atv trails on the land to go hunting. I looked up the laws and saw you can't cross a field in production, but everything else had to be fenced or posted. So, I fenced and posted a 40-acre plot of woodland facing out to the public side. My main purpose was so I and my son could hunt and not be worried about being shot. Many times, I have had to repost ripped down sings and fix cut wires. I went out this year and about 150 feet of barbed wire and 4 fence posts were missing, and two others broken off from when they cleaned a path on the other side. I went back out hand pulling a sled with posts and wire, so I took the cleaned-out path on the other side. A few days later someone called and asked if I walked on their side and I told them yes, they told me to never step on their land again. I asked if My walking down their trail cost them any money and he said no. I told him that they cost me money by destroying my fence and he denied it but then said Well maybe a tree took them out when they were making the trail. They then told me not to cross on their land and told them to follow the law and post or fence the land like I had too. Funny part is they had a deer hunting camp set up and after I repaired my fence someone pulled their camper out and two vehicles left. They were planning unfettered access to my land without asking for permission, all they had to do was ask. The last sob story he tried on me was I grew up hunting out there all the time.
Then you've got the people who don't even know where their property lines are. My late husband was posting "No Trespassing" signs across the back of our neighbors place, as our property is in a L shape., and it runs along their back yard. The guy came our huffing and puffing, demanding to know what my husband was doing on 'his' property! The guy said he owned all the way back into the woods, which most of our property is, wooded, that is. Of course my husband quickly and in no uncertain words, informed him it was not his property, but ours. And he didn't want them or their kids playing back there and getting injured or worse. He also told him to check his deed and property lines for himself. We heard no more from him after that. In NY, private property means 'private'! We have a diverse wildlife population that crosses our 5 acres regularly, coyotes, fox, porcupines, skunks, squirrels, deer, turkeys, and who knows what else. I love them all, and want them left alone. They don't bother me, I don't bother them.

Might be a good idea to put a fine metal mesh over any open window. We do that here in Australia as part of our bush fire safety building codes to stop sparks and embers getting inside. You could have a downwards facing exit for the cats

I wish I could say that it’s unbelievable that you don’t have the right to keep people off your own property but I believe we are all losing our basic autonomy to the bullies.
We have a saying in Texas, "Good fences make good Neighbors". And we have them EVERYWHERE. Unfortunately for Vermont, Gold Shaw Farm needs to fence in the entire property. I noticed when they all went to chase the black bear down, there where no fences to be crossed. By Vermont law, the hunters can go get their dogs, but they cannot damage any property while hunting.
I live and hunt in KY. As soon as one of my dogs crosses on to a farm they aren't supposed to be on, I am trespassing. Whether I'm with them or not it's my problem not the owner of the land. VT has some crazy laws.
Vermont is a blue state, and blue states tend to have some crazy property right laws that put greater burden on the property owner than the trespasser.
The VT Department of Fish and Wildlife is run by hunters, fishers and trappers, its a case of the the regulated regulating themselves. And they want to go where ever they please, when ever they please, to do what ever they please.

Not much to add on the hound hunting issue--some other comments have fantastic suggestions on stricter laws there. But as a safety precaution for you and yours, you might consider adding more cameras around in less visible locations and not showing footage from them on any of your socials so people won't know to avoid specific angles. It won't prevent damage, but might let you catch any other malicious actions on camera for law enforcement to do something about it. I'm so sorry you're dealing with any of this.
You need better security cameras to identify people in vehicles and license numbers along with notifications when drivers enter your property so you can immediately call police. Maybe all your neighbors need to also set up cameras and notify others and police.

It seems like they're freaking out because someone isn't backing down from their intimidation tactics. They know a lot of these farmers don't like what they're doing. If one stands up for their land rights then others might do that same. I'm willing to bet they'd be severely out numbered by landowners. I grew up in the country with hunting dogs. And trespass problems. Am familiar with a lot of this. Spoilt child in old body there has been behaving badly for decades and is whining because he was called out in public. He was told this would go on the internet. Now everyone knows his dogs are poorly trained and he’s a jerk. Poachers and trespassers are basically lawless problem people who get into other illegalities as well. They have no respect for anything. They also sue you if they get injured trespassing. 🙄

I'm a "neighbor" in New Hampshire. HOWEVER. I was born in Alabama, I was raised in Tennessee. I left in my mid-20s. There is NO REASON anyone should have -THAT HORN- on their vehicle or be waving -THAT FLAG- and be yelling about "muh rights" (you know which ones), especially this far North, (though Manchester always proves me wrong), and especially when their rights are apparently more important than yours rights as a land owner. Getting a drone you can deploy from the house quickly is a good idea to have available. As it can fly to the corners of your property if you suspect an intrusion.
Looks like a marine (emergency) signal flare. There are 2 types I know of. A self contained plastic tube that you aim and pull a string on the back and it will launch an orange flare in the same manner as the one in the video. The other is functionally the same - a flare loaded into a shot shell (like a shotgun) and is fired by a plastic "gun". The person would have to throw a road flare or light and get the timing right on a roman candle which would be very difficult at the speed of the vehicle. I would say that it was VERY likely a premeditated arson attempt.
His 6:38 "We'll do the best we can to stay away" pretty much sums up the problem. They live no where near your farm yet somehow cant guarantee they will not trespass on your farm. What do you need to do to for sure keep him off your property? A restraining order keeping him out of your county? Seems like a possibility with the recurring drive bys and attempted arson.

The irony is that these "Hound Hunters" would be the first to greet you with a loaded firearm if you went on THEIR PROPERTY. I feel confident in saying that. Hello. Worked to put someone in federal prison before. Quite a challenge. Shouldn't be our job, but here we are. Morgan has a very good case here, but unfortunately no arrests are going to be made until violence against a person occurs. Our system is broken in that regard, we can prove this by looking at most domestic violence situations, no arrests happen until someone ends up in the hospital with witnesses to the violence. Morgan and his family would benefit from changing the reporting system in Vermont into an information escrow. Jessica Ladd has one. She did a 6 minute ted talk about it, it's still up on youtube. It's not impossible to slow down the butch's of the world from doing irreparable harm to innocent people. Ask a leader, any leader, for an information escrow to report bad or criminal behavior. Reminder that making false reports is a crime. People like Butch won't have video evidence of violence, because we are not violent people. Morgan has a firestick tossed into a loft of tinder, recorded. What does Butch have? Let him make false reports and let us find out his footage of violence has to be faked. Get that reporting system, you deserve it.

thing by training their dogs on command to immediately stop and return to them if the animals they are pursuing goes onto private land, but that's too much work, it's better (in their lazy heads) to intimidate than be respectful. It's a dangerous mentality that is hard to diffuse and worse, the politicians refuse to get involved when they should be taking action against those who think they can do whatever they want. Sad
I've said this before, but as a trainer who has specifically trained working dogs with insanely high prey drive, these hunters are full of the brown stuff when they say their dogs can't be taught to stop and return to them mid-chase. This is the number one excuse I hear from old school hunters: that once these dogs are on the chase, the only way to stop them is to physically pull them off of it. Using that logic, they claim that the only way to guarantee their dogs don't go on private property would be to outlaw hound hunting altogether, which to them is unacceptable.
Again, this is bullcr*p. Even putting my own experience aside, there are videos on YT of other hound hunters - including those who hunt at great distances from their dogs, just like Butch does - who successfully train their dogs to recall mid-hunt, and they do so with just a few days' effort per dog. These hunters use loud whistles that are designed to be heard miles away, and train their dogs to immediately stop and come whenever they hear said whistle. They begin training the dogs while young, and it only takes a couple days for their dogs to learn. The more dogs in each pack who have been taught this, the easier it becomes to teach the others. Heck, I saw one video where a hunter not only showed how easy it is to train this recall, he even took the camera with him on a hunt and showed his dogs stopping literally mid-chase (hot on the heels of a deer) to run straight to him upon hearing the whistle. Every single dog obeyed, instantly. You can't argue with those results.
The solution to this isn't to ban hound hunting. The solution is to require hound hunters to have *true* control over their dogs at all times, with heavy penalties for failing to control said dogs as needed. All these hunters need to do is spend a few days teaching each dog to recall to a whistle, then utilize their GPS trackers to monitor their dogs' location and immediately recall them if the pack begins to head toward property they're not allowed to hunt on. Easy peasy. But hunters like Butch like to pretend that's impossible, or that it's too much to ask of them to put forth such a minimal amount of effort to respect the property rights they claim to value so much (at least when it comes to their own property).
Butch is wrong. And if he and others like him don't want hound hunting eventually made illegal (as it will be if hounds continue running out of control on people's private property, attacking domesticated animals and people alike), they need to change. They have all the tools necessary to enact that change. The public simply needs to pressure lawmakers to force them to do so. For everybody's sake.
Side note: As for hunters believing they should have the right to violate other people's property rights - even temporarily - simply because they can't control their dogs (or "can't control the bear the dogs are chasing," as Butch puts it), I'd like to remind people that even individuals with life threatening disabilities who rely on highly trained service dogs to keep them alive have strict limitations on their right to be accompanied by said dogs. In particular, they must maintain full control of their canine partners at all times, and guess what? They're not allowed to bring their service dogs onto private property without the owner's permission. If even someone whose life depends on having their incredibly highly trained dog with them doesn't have the right to violate a property owner's wishes, why the heck should hunters have that right just to partake in a hobby that's completely voluntary? That's pure craziness.

if the dogs attack the Morgan's chickens you wouldn't know that and wouldn't know to call them back even if they were trained to come back when signaled. To be in control of your animal you need to be present not be miles away.

Although you are very wrong about service dog laws. You cannot prevent someone from having a service dog with them just because it is private property. You can only tell the person they're not welcome as a whole and even then the ADA still protects people from being disallowed entry for being disabled and having a service dog when it is a business or place of service. (as in the location provides a service) If you tell someone not to come to your house which is used solely as a place of living then that is fine since the ada doesn't just give disabled people the right to go into people's houses uninvited

@@lightup6751 Dying in house fires that start overnight is one of the most common ways to die from a fire. The perpetrators had to know that was a possible outcome when they attempted to burn both their house and barn down.
So yeah, if the house had caught on fire and they died in that fire, murder would have been one of the charges.
Even setting a building on fire when you believe no one is inside can still get a person an attempted murder charge. I know of someone who set his ex-girlfriend's house on fire when he believed she was at work. He was caught and was charged and convicted with arson and attempted murder. The prosecution argued successfully that he didn't make sure there was no one in the house when he set it on fire.
We lost a barn to a fire bug years and years ago. Hay was stored in the loft..we lost draft horses, cows, pigs, and a slew of differnt kinds of birds. I'm happy they missed the window. Scary doesn't being to cover it 😢

There is a huge cultural difference in the attitudes toward private property in New England. I grew up in Maine, it's very similar. If you wanted people to stay off your land, it was incumbent upon you to post it. I don't remember the exact specifications for the posting, but it was something similar to what is described here. If it wasn't posted, you were free to hunt on it. Honestly, I never really questioned it, because that's what I grew up with. It really wasn't until I became an adult and moved west (obviously, can't really move East from Maine) that I realized that things were different elsewhere.

Same thing in Iowa. Only there doesn't need to be any posting. You need to have the express permission from the owner, lessee, or person in lawful possession in order to hunt on their land. And if the owner, lessee, or person in lawful possession asks them to leave? You have to leave immediately.
The only exception is if the animal you wounded dies on someone else's property, you are allowed to enter the property _unarmed_ to retrieve the animal. That's it. You are not allowed to carry bows or guns onto someone else's property to retrieve the animal.
Edit: I should add that hunting with dogs in Iowa is only allowed if the dogs remain on a lead the entire time. Precisely because ppl (like Butch) don't have control of their dogs.
Write to your representatives! I am a Vermont resident and have been keeping an eye on this issue since a couple and their dog were attacked for half an hour by a pack of bear hunting hounds in my county in 2019, this is in no way ok and the hostility being shown by these hunters to other Vermonters, (I don't care that you moved here, you live here so you are a Vermonter and your voice matters when discussing Vermont issues) is unacceptable. I am Working on that letter now. If enough people complain they have to address the issue, and don't let their harassments stop you, they know they are in the wrong so their only response is violence.
Morgan published a very easy to send list of emails to various legislators in our state. He even composed the letter. I sent every one in.
He should run to be a local representative, that's another way.

I’d say “fuck the police; don’t trust em, don’t deal with em” and just jump straight to getting lawyers and more cameras. Document the damages done, both to the farm and to your (Morgan’s) person.
Why “fuck the police?” Because number one, ACAB, and number two, there’s a VERY strong possibility that the officers will be hound hunters themselves, thus they will be less likely to bring charges against whomever tried to burn down your barn. Even if they do, it’s not unlikely that they’d only receive a fine of some kind, even with a successful arson charge.
TL;DR: Don’t bother going to the police with this. Get a lawyer instead.

I used to work for a group that trains working dogs. One of the biggest things we trained for was recall. It is really important to recall your dog at a moment’s notice. Those people don’t want to control their animals. Clearly, they don’t want to respect private property.
I doubt that Butch and similar hound hunters see the need to train for recall, even if they know what it is. They've never had to worry about it, so why should they have to content with the training or dealing with some 'non-farmer' farmer who just wants to stop them from doing what they've always done. (Un)fortunately, the hound hunters might eventually find themselves dragged into the 21st century, whether they like it or not. Especially if they continue to operate as they always have done - or behave even worse...
@@be6715 There will be no action on the police and the government's part unless there is a lot of money involved. If Butch and his cronies cause significant property damage to Morgan's or his neighbours' property, then and only then will they take action.
There are several things Morgan will need to do; install a gate, install discrete cameras in front of his driveway to screen who comes onto his property, he will need to have positive identification of any and all trespassers on his property for a restraining order, he will also have to file a suit for damage to his property and make sure he asks for restitution in the millions of dollars.

@@caroc4327 Someone living on his farm, a guy with a bunch of dogs lets them out of sight while they hunt right next to said farm but somehow, the farm owner is in the wrong? Maybe the whole video thing could have been different but it certainly does not put the farm owner in the wrong on this and Butch coming back near that farm only makes it worse. I'm sure Butch can be a nice fellow sharing a beer over a fire but in the forest with his uncontrolled dogs, he is the problem...
It still amazes me how someone trying to make a living and minding their own business and protecting what is theirs becomes the bad guy.

Morgan, I don't think that talking will solve your issue in the face of entitled, arrogant, and blinkered people. When I had the shop, I had an intimidation issue with a group of teenagers. I diarised and reported every incident to the police and made myself an orderly but utter nuisance until such time as they put my premises under surveillance and saw what was happening for themselves. It's important to add cameras facing both the entrance and exit roads of your property. Doing so will capture the faces of cars and people when they are up to no good. Additionally, it may be time to consider adding a large front gate to keep people off of your farm. Remember, the most important things to protect are not your possessions, but yourself and those you love.
A good fence makes for great neighbors my husband always says.

Butch and his group are extremely scary. They seem like people that resort to violence when their hunting methods are called out. The driving by your house and honking is enough to tell me that they're not afraid to escalate. I know I couldn't handle that level of harassment.. not to mention this mysterious arson attempt.. Gosh Morgan you've really been through it but it just makes me respect you more since you refuse to back down.
i’ve installed security cameras for 19 yrs. we can put 2 license plate reading cameras at the road. they are ment to capture at night and at high speed vehicles. if they cover up the plates you will have a great shot even at night of the vehicle.. we do direct bury cable to the road and mount the cameras on a 4x4 pole. i’ve got cameras on my mail box facing one way down the road and the other way down the road. use conduit to protect any exposed wires. use a back up camera off the house with a zoomed in lens to cover those road side cameras. that way if the road side cameras are tampered with you will have a great shot of them doing so. We can also install a light right over the cameras to light up the area real good. criminals don’t like bright lights. we can do a motion sensor light that will light up the entire neighbor hood. also a large spot light will make it easier to alert you someone is there. I keep a monitor in my living room thats always on with a wireless mouse that controls the cameras. not a cheap set up but your life is worth it.

The VT Department of Fish and Wildlife is run by hunters, fishers and trappers, its a case of the the regulated regulating themselves. And they want to go where ever they please, when ever they please, to do what ever they please.

A friend of my parents got death threats in the mail just for posting her property! Apparently it was some guys’ “special hunting spot”, her property is 18 acres of a stretch of mostly unbroken forest that goes on for thousands and thousands of acres I can’t imagine it was so special it was necessary to send death threats! The entitlement of a lot of old Vermonters absolutely baffles me.
I feel bad so many have lost their land because people buy it where it use to be public for them especially with the costs I can’t help but feel bad I don’t think threats are ok, but I feel terrible so many were born and raised somewhere that others now come in and completely change

The idea that the old timers and their history have nothing to do with the change in the land is ridiculous though.
They may be closer to the lore of the “original” white settlers who started owning, parceling and controlling land but that was a step on a culture’s cancerous consumption of nature. They might not like how grandpappy’s farm from the 1870s is now a gas station or target parking lot but they lost the actual plot when they gave in to entitlement, racism, patriarchy and violence as bedtime stories.
Instead of doing any work toward envisioning a future for the land they love they would rather scapegoat a duck farmer because his accent is wrong.

I’ve known her my whole life and she’s basically as “vermonty” as they come. The reason she posted her property was because at the time she had goats, sheep and much more importantly three young children and didn’t want any random people wandering on her property while they were playing outside.

I commend you for standing up for what's right. Butch seems to represent an antiquated way of living based on his hunting style and attitude. It was really interesting that he spoke with maturity mixed with self-righteous indignation about sitting down and talking, then moments later ranted about stripping others of outdoor activities if he didn't get his way. As other commenters have stated, I can't imagine what he'd do if you stepped foot on his property, but he's fine coming on yours with a team of men and hounds. As you say, you gave visibility to a traditional activity, and sometimes tradition must die as society moves forward.
After announcing to the internet how close they came to burning down your barn, and exactly where they should aim if they want to try again, maybe you should put some wire mesh over that window to prevent anything else from being able to be fired through it. Hope this never happens again and you, your wife and your animals stay safe.

Not to mention about a dozen high resolution security cameras.

Morgan, to be honest, I think this is going to escalate until these people manage to hurt you/your wife or cause dramatic damage to your property. People like this do not back off until they are forced to through sheer will, and you've managed to kick a wasps nest. I believe you to have a valid argument, but, frankly, you had no idea what you were walking into. Situations like this require you to think like them. NOT stoop to their level, just understand what's coming. To that degree, my husband had a brilliant idea that can at least frustrate them enough to leave your property alone. Along with the required postings, or with a larger spread, put up alarm systems (that they cannot get to/find, high up, etc.). When you get a notification that there is something on the property, set off the alarm. That will alert the animals and completely ruin their hunt. Ruin it enough times, they may not hunt your property anymore. It would also alert your neighbors to be aware there are people on their properties and help them out as well. Additionally, I agree with other posters, with all of the documentation you've done, there is a case for a protection order against Butch himself. And, I would make sure to tighten up the barn so another flare doesn't hit it's mark along with moving hay bales and such so they don't have any other large targets. While you don't think this is how society should function, it's how it is at the moment. Please, for the sake of everyone that cares about you, treat this as a tactical situation to protect your farm and family.

Very well said chattygreenwig. Butch has shown himself to be nothing but unreasonable, confrontational and argumentative. A restraining order is a good first step. Noise makers in the woods is indeed a brilliant idea. That Morgan has to arrange his life around these derelicts is truly unfortunate.

Truthfully, I saw this coming a mile away, I'm just surprised Morgan didn't mention it sooner. Obviously, there needs to be some kind of legal intervention at this point to put a stop to it. Men like Butch can never be reasoned with because bullies can't be reasoned with. That I think was Morgan's first mistake.
I once heard someone say that the reason people bully others is because they feel poweless and insecure about themselves. I think that's true. I suspect that these hound hunters feel a sense of powerlessness in their lives which is why I think that deep down they secretly get off of the sense of power and control they feel from going on other people's property with dogs to hunt a defenseless creature that can't fight back against them.
Of course, now that everybody knows what they are doing on the Internet, they are lashing out at Morgan instead of taking accountability for their actions. They think that Morgan took away the one thing they had that made them feel better about themselves, and they don't like it one bit. They don't see themselves as doing anything wrong because bullies don't have any empathy or sympathy for those who they prey upon. Which is why you can't have an honest conversation with people like this because they think they are entitled to keep harming others. It's immature, selfish, and stupid.
Just to prove my point, i think that is the reason why Butch has been going by Morgan's property. He had no reason to be there at all. He's clearly trying to intimidate and harass Morgan, and I hope Morgan documents everything for when he takes Butch to court. Good luck, Morgan, and I hope you stay safe.

Morgan could have been better prepared with more cameras, for example along the road to record the license plates, and then the culprit would have been caught. Or not, if they prepared themselves and cover the plates.
Or he could took legal action and interdict to that moron to come closer than 50 miles of his property.
But all this comes down to cost. You cannot afford to have a perfect defense. And bullies knows that. And if you act weak and defensive they will come at you until they die. They will never stop. They will stop only got hit hard enough to go through their thick skull, or when it cost them too much.
I know this, because I had my shares of bullies, one being my own brother. No matter how much you bend the knee, or lower you head, the bully will want more.
Power of example does not work. And we see this all over the place, from individual examples liker my brother, to super powers.
@ehombane If he, at the very least, has a restraining order put into place, it would help to nip a lot of this behavior in the bud because he doesn't live in the same county as Morgan so he would have no choice but to stay away or risk running afoul of the law. I think that Morgan has more than enough video evidence to show that Butch is harassing him. It may not stop the other people, but at least it will keep Butch away.
I wish the authorities would step in before this escalates any further. Very sad to see this.
Vermont needs to adopt purple paint laws. Their current scheme is completely anti-land owner.
That wouldn't change the hounder's attitude b/c as Butch said, "dogs cant read posting signs" so of course the hounder's feel free to walk onto any property, posted or not, on the pretext of retrieving their dogs.

What they NEED to adopt are consequences for trespassing. According to the list that Morgan shared at some point in the video, #4 seems to state that there are none.
@@mehtarelingolien can’t punish what isn’t illegal. The law as written is heavily presumptive in favor of the hound hunter and the burden is on the landowner to overcome that hurdle. That makes punishment functionally an apology without an enforceable promise to try and not do it again. Again being later that same day. Because of that it isn’t worth it to authorities to even try to protect landowners.
Unfortunately, if you look at who makes those laws, it being 'anti-land owner' is by design.
Butch needs to understand that if he doesn’t want his dogs taken or shot then he should keep them away from your farm and other people’s farms. My family’s herd of goats were massacred by a group a 3 pet dogs that just wouldn’t stop. The one that we couldn’t get kept returning over a few days to try to kill more. Their owner was furious when we told them where their bodies could be found, and told us they could have stopped them, but we tried. Couldn’t distract them. It was horribly sad but that’s what happens when you let your animals run around off leash in other people’s land. You don’t know what they’ll do, and what lives they’ll ruin. We had to bury 35 beloved pets in one night because of irresponsible dog owners.

Facts
I own a farm in Virginia where our laws are a little more strict then Vermont's. However, we have run ins with bear hunters every year. Every bear season, we have to go into lock down with our free range animals becuase we have had hunting dogs chase after our livestock. Another thing not mentioned in your videos are that these hunters run those poor bears miles and miles across mountains, valleys, forests and fields just to be bitten everytime it has to slow down due to exhaustion. This is not even close to be humane in anyway at all. In fact I would ho as far as call it a sever animal cruelty. I'm a hunter, I am also very supportive of our rights, trespassing on others land is not a right, it is a violation of other's right of personal property.
It sounds like you’re not from but moved to Virginia? Morgan should’ve locked his animals up too. He purchased land in a cheaper state. The laws did not change after he moved there. Maybe he should’ve ran some numbers on what a better fence would cost.

They dont rent it. I have posted no trespassing signs all over my property. The law states They are not allowed to come onto my land unless I give them permission to. The law also says that if a dog is on my land and gives chase or damages my livestock, I have every right to shoot that dog and demand restitution. That is Virginia Law. Just because some bear hunters who, btw quite a few are from out of state, run their dogs onto my property because they want to doesnt give them the right to do so. Period. I have the law on my side and I am not an a$$hole who wants to kill dogs just because their owners are inconsiderate self-centered jerks.
@@yellotang if you aren’t inconsiderate why did you buy and pay for land in an area that allows dog hunting? There are plenty of places that don’t. Dogs can’t read no trespassing signs but people can read the laws that an area has before they move there. I do think if the dog kills your animals you should be able to get payment. I also don’t think the hunters should be able to come into your property to release dogs and have hunters on your land without your permission. If they are on a neighboring property that they have rights to hunt and the dogs come onto your property though people can’t act surprised when they moved to an area that allows that and has been a way of life for a long time. I’m not saying hunters should be able to use your land as their own but I am saying that if you buy in an area where dog hunting is allowed then don’t be surprised when people want to come get their dogs. Morgan seems to have a colonizer mentality. He moved somewhere most likely due to lower prices. Now he wants to have the laws changed because he doesn’t agree with the culture that has been in the area for a long time. I’m sure he isn’t the only person that owns property in the area that doesn’t hunt with dogs and has dogs come into his property. For whatever reason the locals that own land and don’t dog hunt haven’t tried to get dog hunting banned. This is why people from small towns don’t like people from out of town moving in. It’s not that they don’t like them for coming from somewhere else. It’s because many times they will try to change the communities culture and way of life that has existed long before they decided to move to the community. It would have probably been in his interest to try to talk to the hunting club in his area and ask them to let him know before they hunt in that area so he could put his animals up. Hunting season is only a limited time and most of the time hunters are out on the weekend. Not always but most of the time people will work with you if you work with them. There is always a bad apple in every group though. If people absolutely do not want dogs coming in their property they could always pay for nicer fencing. That would cost a lot of money but then there would be no reason for dogs to be on your property.
I'm surprised that Butch hasn't been arrested yet! He seems to have a total disregard for your rights and the rights of any other farmers he comes across. The fact that he has multiple videos showing him coming into conflict with people is rather frightening as well considering how many people may not have recorded their encounters.

@@varukasalt I have a low opinion of the police in terms of their organizations due to the prevalence of misconduct and lack of accountability, just for starters, but assuming that individual officers are acting out of malice because assholes like Butch aren't getting arrested isn't a good place to do any thinking from. As Hanlon's Razor says, never assume malice or conspiracy when it can be explained by laziness or incompetence.
But the real problem with your comment I will point out with this question, arrest him on what charges? Whatever the charge you choose, can you offer up enough evidence to obtain a conviction in front of a jury? Unless you can point to the existence of such evidence, making such an arrest would be an act of...police misconduct. Worse, that would let the Butches out there portray themselves as victims of official oppression due to false arrest. Calling for the police to act illegally to help Butch make hay about being targeted is the opposite of helpful.

First, I have to say that I believe that the attempt to burn down the barn could be labeled as ATTEMPTED MURDER. If it caught fire, it would have gone over to the house while you were asleep and killed you all.
This reminds me a lot of the coyote hound hunters here in Oklahoma. We've had a lot of problems with those hunters letting loose their dogs on coyotes in properties with cows in them; then having to go after the dogs and cutting the fences, which then lets cows out and when they drive into fields. I am a hunter, however the use of dogs to tear apart a creature even such as a coyote, is horrible. I understand that controlling populations is a thing that we now have to do to try and keep the ecosystem intact after we messed it all up, but that doesn't negate the fact that you're letting loose dogs you have no control of to chase down a creature that isn't even on property you own.

@ellisfamilyfarms8961 South Western Oklahoma. It's not talked about much if at all, but I know some ranchers that have problems with them. When out driving around to see if I can find coyotes to take photos of, I've caught multiple hunters with dogs loose or in their crates and slowing along cow fields that are known for having coyote dens nearby.

Last I checked our laws; Morgan is 100% righteous in having concerns about his property.
If it is a public road, all states permit you to film things easily seen from the road way (ie in clear line of sight from a person). So, Morgan was well within his rights to film. And it wouldn't count as harassment as 1) Morgan lives there and 2) Morgan had a legitimate reason to approach him. Entitled people feel harassed when other people exercise their rights.
So, I'm in Georgia and I'm intrigued to know what the flip side of the laws are that protect Morgan. You can bear hunt with dogs in Georgia during the specific dog bear hunting season and you have to have the appropriate licensure and tags for the bears to do so. It needs to be on public or state property or you need the express consent from private property owners. On the flip side, there are places in Georgia where you're required to own a gun if you're a property owner, dogs are legally considered weapons, and if it's on your private property you are legally able to shoot to kill. Especially a posted farm with "no trespassing" signs, if you are caught hunting on that farm without permission the farmer could not only kill the dogs without penalty on site, but if the hunter is deep enough onto the farmer's land for the farmer to argue that the hunter is an armed individual harming/killing my livestock deep on the private property while trespassing, he'd have grounds to shoot the hunter to. These legal hunting protections with weaponry go both ways in my state, so the farmer can protect their land/livestock but the hunters are also protected if they're abiding by the laws. I have a little corgi puppy that at 4 months while walking on a leash was suddenly grabbed by a random German short haired pointer. I had not seen the dog coming, the owner had to beat his dog off my puppy. He needed stichs along his throat. The owner was the most uncaring person on the planet saying his dog must have mistaked mine for a fox. I swear these disgusting people are absolute hypocrits. Screaming about how their rights are above everyone elses. The right to hunt = the right to trespass? I saddly don't think people this caught up in their obesssions can be reasoned with. I sincerely hope that you got that owner to pay for medical bills, and reported him to the police. I have a 3-month old puppy myself, and while he's one of the bigger dogs, I did own tiny breeds most my life. I can't even imagine another dog attacking one of mine. I hope that you and the pup are both okay.

Seem to me the quickest solution to the Butch problem is to just file a restraining order against him. No police involvement is required, you just need a lawyer (which I assume you already have) to draft the filing and a court date. You already have enough video evidence to make your case. An alternative albeit much slower solution is to get your neighbors together and file a class action lawsuit against the Country, F&W Dept., and the Governor. Good Luck.

Class action seems like a good idea considering they're trespassing on the neighbors property as well. If the whole neighborhood wants you gone you either escalate and land your butt in jail or finally just bugger off.
If Butch is from another county, and you file a restraining order against him, he'll have no business being anywhere near your property again.

The other issue is where the hunt starts from, it has to start from a legal location. I assume there is some state or federal land nearby? You can't start your hunt on someone else's private property without permission.
I definitely encourage you to take legal action in whatever way you can. This is getting pretty concerning. Talk to a lawyer and the police to see what you can do about this situation, especially since he is harassing you and someone attempted to catch your barn on fire.
I agree, and being a transplant to VT, enlisting the help of neighbors who may be Vermonters by birth, may go a long way in encouraging law enforcement to listen.
At the end of the day it's ultimately up to the hunter, hound or otherwise, to ensure they're not trespassing on property that forbids any sort of hunting. The fact that they keep showing up is clear indication that they're trying to antagonize and intimidate you, and just based on the video of him being so confrontational when you drove up should be enough to get some sort of legal ball rolling. He's been informed several times he cannot be on your land hunting, your property is posted, it's time to consider the legal angle.

If that is too big of a deal for someone they should not buy property and start a farm where dog hunting is allowed. You can always spend extra money to put in better fences to keep dogs out. However morgan didn’t do that. He moved to an area most likely for cheaper land prices that has always allowed dog hunting. He did not spend the extra money for fences that would keep hunting dogs out and now he is trying to get something banned that has been part of the local community for a long time.

if you watch other videos on this subject, one he's adressed the problems with fencing the entire property boundries, plus the hunters are allowed to release their dogs where ever they like - ie they don't drop them off ON his property, but in the middle of the road in front of his / his neighbor's property, and can be 2+ miles away using gps tracking to follow their dogs thru other people's properties - claiming they follow the law of "being in controls of the dogs" via a gps signal instead of physically in controls of them.
if the property owner tries to stop them from hunting on their land the land owner can be fined for it. Essentially the hunters HAVE been given a green light to legally trespass and hunt on land even if it is posted no trespassing/hunting. Neither Bruce/the people he brings with him or the raccoon hunters that were on his land (basically right at his house) are from the area, they go out of their way to go to properties that aren't their own or even in the city they live in, release their dogs and do whatever they want. In almost any other state all you have to do is post no trespassing and you can legally go after the hunters for trespassing (ie run them off, run off their dogs or take them to court if they keep coming back), where they are if he tried he'd be the one in trouble, as in if gets in the way and stops the hunters/dogs in any way - much as the lady who pepper sprayed the ones on her property. Bruce and his buddies intentially continue to go to Morgan's property and the neighboring properties - after being told to stay out many times. And you really think that even if it was cost effective, that Bruce and his asshat buddies wanted to hunt fenced lands they wuldn't just rip them down if their dogs tracked an animal to the fence, they would.
Not to mention, there are a lot more people calling to end the free running dog hunting, than there are that are doing it/want it. But hunters will make the most noise and band together to keep their little hobby going. They aren't calling for the end of hunting, just being allowed to release free running dogs to go whereever the hell they want... would you defend it if they happen to run thru someoen's property and cause the injury to a child??? because their front yard wasn't fenced.... because they had an open driveway the dogs ran up.... property OWNER'S should have more rights than trespassers.

My daughter is now 36 years old, but when she was small, all the way up until she was in her middle to late teens she could not go in our yard, front or back, or anywhere on our 18 acres by herself. It just wasn't safe! We always had to worry about other people's dogs. Not only did we have to worry about the hunting dogs that where never tought to read no trespassing signs, but we also had to worry about those unwanted dumped dogs and the dogs on neighboring properties on near by road who packed up after there owners left for work each morning then ran the woods. Those packed up dogs attacked the pigs in their pins and ran the goats in their pins till they dropped dead of heart attacks or the dogs just ripped out their throats. The dogs never eat what they killed, they just killed for the joy of the hunt. Make no mistake animals do kill for the joy of the hunt without eating what they kill.
I was told by deer hunters that their dogs couldn't read and I said it was not my fault that they didn't train their dogs better. My child's life and the lives of my animals on my family land out trumps the lives of your dogs.

I live in Indiana and own a farm. I also own a hunting camp in upper Michigan. That being said, the laws are so different here. In Indiana, a hunter can only enter private land to retrieve their dog. If the animals have harassed or injured any farm animals, the owner can elect to have them killed. So most hunters ask for permission first and call the day of a hunt. We all work together.
In upper Michigan things get even tougher for trespassers. If it's not your land, don't set foot on it. In a area whare kids have guns in there bus stops for bears and have been going through gun safety sense they were four, you don't trespass. Lol

The morality of hound hunting is for me personally besides the point, if we ban hound hunting, then we need to ban all sorts of other forms of hunting as well. The real issue is land rights and whether it's okay to threaten other people's livelihood by hound hunting near their animals.

Since local law enforcement is so weak there, it's time to turn to state and federal enforcement. Reach out to your elected officials in Washington. This is not a small problem and not yours alone to fight. That flare incident changed the direction of this forever. This is not about hunting anymore.

We live in another state not near VT. We too have a barn and land. We have had to deal with unauthorized hunters coming on our land. One time a goose hunter was about to shoot over my head while I was taking a walk. I think the suggestions to protect your barn as much as possible is a good idea. The cameras you put out seem to catch a lot of the events too. But, making people aware of what is happening in a public way seems to be the way to keep this issue before the public and legislators.
The bravery to post this video tells me you have it in you to save any mommy cow that needs a calf pulling, Morgan. You can do this. You are the Daryl Davis for Vermont farmers. Its not just your property this is happening to, these guys are going after anyone with land it seems. The fact that local law enforcement can't or won't do anything to fix this is appallingly. The governor seems complicit as well so if anything they should be getting the phone calls. Butch is a product of that environment.

@@noah.r.stewart6666 That was when it was necessary. It isn't any longer. Hunting is just a sport now, for all but those who really NEED to put food on the table, literally, or starve. But those situations are very few and far between today. I doubt Butch and his buddies with their big trucks and dogs, really need to hunt that bear, to feed a starving family.
As a protective measure for your barn, maybe you can cover the window openings with something to keep things being thrown into the barn. That video of the fire incident was scary.

If you don't need air going through the window, you can use acrylic sheeting. Optix is a brand that is sold at Home Depot. It is clear like glass or plexi, but it won't shatter.
I think you need cameras that are not on wifi or Bluetooth in parallel with the cameras you have now. It’s not hard to jam signals. But there is a place for old school DVR
if the window is an access point for the cats and/or escape point, you can create a magnetic cat door type cover to prevent most things from entering the barn through the window and still allow the cats access it should work even with semi-flexible materials that would allow air flow.

I think it is time for you to ask for a protection order from the court so that Butch (and anyone else you can identify) cannot be within at least a mile of your property or passing by on the public road in front of your home and the order should also specify his dogs cannot be a released by him near you because he can't control them. He seems to think he has a right to follow his dogs anywhere no matter what. That way the police can act if you find him hanging around. He obviously doesn't want to "talk" but believes you are an outsider with no right in the State of Vermont. How sad is that? He should just go hunting someplace else and the whole matter would get put to rest. And as for you not being a "farmer," what does he think the cattle and pigs are? Just because some of your livestock is smaller, Butch certainly can't deny you have cattle and make your living from your "farm." I'd also put better cameras up out front so that a positive identification can be made of who might be trying to damage your farm house and barns from the road. I don't know about Vermont but the state I live in would consider that attempted murder. Please stay safe because your calm voice of reason doesn't seem to be working.
At the time he had neither pigs nor cattle. That doesnt mean Morgan is any less a farmer but you can see when someone needs cheap attacks against another how they can construct that insult

Don't know VT Law, but seems like most states you cant get an order of protection without first getting separate legal charges filed. Usually it would have to be like one would have to be charged with harassment, assault, trespassing etc and then you'd be able to. I do agree that he should get a really good camera or two (if legally allowed) that is good enough quality that can read license plates of vehicles, any time of day, that pass by the farm

Edit: IA law on protective orders just requires heading down to the county courthouse and submitting it. Altho depending on exactly why you're filing a protective order, you may need a police report or other evidence to back you up.

As a free range poultry farmer, I couldn’t even imagine this!! People have let their dogs on my property but came over immediately when notified and retrieved their dog. They were very friendly to me however and it never happend again. These people near you need to buy their own farms and hunt on their own properties. The entitlement those men have is unreal.

They're busy pulling over old ladies on dark , completely unoccupied country roads, to give them tickets for ,allegedly, driving through a stop sign, at 2:00 in the morning, as they drive home to NY after visiting a son who had been in a car accident. In my state, trespassing while hunting you will lose your hunting license. Push for harder property rights. I moved back to the farm about 12 years ago and found others had atv trails on the land to go hunting. I looked up the laws and saw you can't cross a field in production, but everything else had to be fenced or posted. So, I fenced and posted a 40-acre plot of woodland facing out to the public side. My main purpose was so I and my son could hunt and not be worried about being shot. Many times, I have had to repost ripped down sings and fix cut wires. I went out this year and about 150 feet of barbed wire and 4 fence posts were missing, and two others broken off from when they cleaned a path on the other side. I went back out hand pulling a sled with posts and wire, so I took the cleaned-out path on the other side. A few days later someone called and asked if I walked on their side and I told them yes, they told me to never step on their land again. I asked if My walking down their trail cost them any money and he said no. I told him that they cost me money by destroying my fence and he denied it but then said Well maybe a tree took them out when they were making the trail. They then told me not to cross on their land and told them to follow the law and post or fence the land like I had too. Funny part is they had a deer hunting camp set up and after I repaired my fence someone pulled their camper out and two vehicles left. They were planning unfettered access to my land without asking for permission, all they had to do was ask. The last sob story he tried on me was I grew up hunting out there all the time.
Where I'm from trespassing with a firearm is a felony I believe it is called trespassing with deadly weapon.
Then you've got the people who don't even know where their property lines are. My late husband was posting "No Trespassing" signs across the back of our neighbors place, as our property is in a L shape., and it runs along their back yard. The guy came our huffing and puffing, demanding to know what my husband was doing on 'his' property! The guy said he owned all the way back into the woods, which most of our property is, wooded, that is. Of course my husband quickly and in no uncertain words, informed him it was not his property, but ours. And he didn't want them or their kids playing back there and getting injured or worse. He also told him to check his deed and property lines for himself. We heard no more from him after that. In NY, private property means 'private'! We have a diverse wildlife population that crosses our 5 acres regularly, coyotes, fox, porcupines, skunks, squirrels, deer, turkeys, and who knows what else. I love them all, and want them left alone. They don't bother me, I don't bother them.

Might be a good idea to put a fine metal mesh over any open window. We do that here in Australia as part of our bush fire safety building codes to stop sparks and embers getting inside. You could have a downwards facing exit for the cats

In the reptile keeping community there's been a number of break-ins and thefts of valuable (sometimes over $5k per animal) animals, with some animals dying by consequence of the break in. The most valuable animals of course being the ones that the keeper has raised for years and are both emotionally and financially invested in

When you don’t know the situation… as in, the local bear (or deer) population and the devastation overpopulation with disease and starvation can cause those wild animals, it’s kind of silly to support save the bear. I was very glad tho, that he didn’t kill it. And did you notice how those dogs settled down immediately when they were called off?

I wish I could say that it’s unbelievable that you don’t have the right to keep people off your own property but I believe we are all losing our basic autonomy to the bullies.
We have a saying in Texas, "Good fences make good Neighbors". And we have them EVERYWHERE. Unfortunately for Vermont, Gold Shaw Farm needs to fence in the entire property. I noticed when they all went to chase the black bear down, there where no fences to be crossed. By Vermont law, the hunters can go get their dogs, but they cannot damage any property while hunting.
I live and hunt in KY. As soon as one of my dogs crosses on to a farm they aren't supposed to be on, I am trespassing. Whether I'm with them or not it's my problem not the owner of the land. VT has some crazy laws.
Vermont is a blue state, and blue states tend to have some crazy property right laws that put greater burden on the property owner than the trespasser.
The VT Department of Fish and Wildlife is run by hunters, fishers and trappers, its a case of the the regulated regulating themselves. And they want to go where ever they please, when ever they please, to do what ever they please.

We put up a fence and a iron gate with electric opener. We live in the country and were broken into in the past. This worked for us.
Not much to add on the hound hunting issue--some other comments have fantastic suggestions on stricter laws there. But as a safety precaution for you and yours, you might consider adding more cameras around in less visible locations and not showing footage from them on any of your socials so people won't know to avoid specific angles. It won't prevent damage, but might let you catch any other malicious actions on camera for law enforcement to do something about it. I'm so sorry you're dealing with any of this.
You need better security cameras to identify people in vehicles and license numbers along with notifications when drivers enter your property so you can immediately call police. Maybe all your neighbors need to also set up cameras and notify others and police.

It seems like they're freaking out because someone isn't backing down from their intimidation tactics. They know a lot of these farmers don't like what they're doing. If one stands up for their land rights then others might do that same. I'm willing to bet they'd be severely out numbered by landowners. Seems like they're trying to provoke an violent reaction from Morgan so they don't look like the bad guys for bullying him but he's just not that kind of guy.

I grew up in the country with hunting dogs. And trespass problems. Am familiar with a lot of this. Spoilt child in old body there has been behaving badly for decades and is whining because he was called out in public. He was told this would go on the internet. Now everyone knows his dogs are poorly trained and he’s a jerk.
Poachers and trespassers are basically lawless problem people who get into other illegalities as well. They have no respect for anything. They also sue you if they get injured trespassing. 🙄
Barking dogs on your property is a bad thing. Not only does it cause stress on you farm animals but can cause other wild life to scatter onto your place and cause even more hardship.
The flare goes beyond harrasment, and its not just arson... that was literally a murder attempt if it had caught your house and lit it on fire.

I'm a "neighbor" in New Hampshire. HOWEVER. I was born in Alabama, I was raised in Tennessee. I left in my mid-20s. There is NO REASON anyone should have -THAT HORN- on their vehicle or be waving -THAT FLAG- and be yelling about "muh rights" (you know which ones), especially this far North, (though Manchester always proves me wrong), and especially when their rights are apparently more important than yours rights as a land owner.

Lol, stereotypical rednecks aren't solely a southern thing unfortunately. I live in Ohio, historically a union state with a huge amount of soldiers in the civil war. Yet I've seen Confederate flags here in the sticks. People move north and drag it along.

Getting a drone you can deploy from the house quickly is a good idea to have available. As it can fly to the corners of your property if you suspect an intrusion.
Looks like a marine (emergency) signal flare. There are 2 types I know of. A self contained plastic tube that you aim and pull a string on the back and it will launch an orange flare in the same manner as the one in the video. The other is functionally the same - a flare loaded into a shot shell (like a shotgun) and is fired by a plastic "gun". The person would have to throw a road flare or light and get the timing right on a roman candle which would be very difficult at the speed of the vehicle.
I would say that it was VERY likely a premeditated arson attempt.
Of course it was premeditated. Whichever method they used. There are no circumstances under which that was an accident.
His 6:38 "We'll do the best we can to stay away" pretty much sums up the problem. They live no where near your farm yet somehow cant guarantee they will not trespass on your farm.
What do you need to do to for sure keep him off your property? A restraining order keeping him out of your county? Seems like a possibility with the recurring drive bys and attempted arson.
So sorry that happened to you. Looks to me 100% this was a planned attack directed at you and your barn. Knowing where to shoot the flare, what window it would go in? Hope the police do a thorough investigation and catch this person 🙏🏼. The fact that you’re still bravely broaching this topic while staying positive in your videos is courageous.
