  • The Slovak National Uprising, a pivotal event in Slovak history, began on August 29, 1944. This armed insurrection was organized by Slovak resistance movements, primarily against the German occupation and the collaborationist Slovak government led by Jozef Tiso.
The uprising was centered in Banská Bystrica, where Slovak forces established the Slovak National Council, symbolizing the resistance's political and military center. The resistance comprised a diverse coalition, including soldiers from the Slovak Army, partisans, and various political groups, ranging from communists to nationalists.
Initially, the uprising made significant gains, liberating large parts of central and eastern Slovakia from German control. This success was temporary, as German forces, recognizing the threat to their regional dominance, quickly launched a counteroffensive.
Despite facing superior German military power, the Slovak resistance continued to fight, engaging in guerrilla warfare and sabotage operations. The uprising received limited support from Allied forces, primarily in the form of Soviet aid and some air support from Western Allies.
One significant aspect of the uprising was its role in protecting Slovak Jews. Parts of the resistance movement actively worked to shelter Jews from deportation, defying the pro-German Slovak regime's policies.
The rebellion was eventually suppressed by Nazi forces in late October 1944, but it significantly disrupted German military operations and is credited with hastening the collapse of Nazi control in the region.
The Slovak National Uprising is remembered as a symbol of resistance against tyranny and oppression. It played a crucial role in the national memory and identity of Slovakia, representing a fight for freedom and democracy.
After World War II, the uprising was celebrated in Communist Czechoslovakia as an example of Soviet-aligned communist resistance, although this interpretation downplayed the contributions of non-communist factions.
Today, the Slovak National Uprising is commemorated in Slovakia as a key moment in the nation's fight against fascism and as a testament to the bravery and sacrifice of those who participated in the resistance.
I have prepared a video showcasing the most significant events, accompanied by a map and figures depicting the number of soldiers engaged on each side. Creating this video was not an easy task, so I would be grateful for any subscriptions, likes, or other forms of engagement. Additionally, I would greatly appreciate any form of feedback, advice, or comments aimed at correcting any mistakes I may have made. Thank you!

Very nice! I am very glad that there are some mapping videos about the Slovak national uprising. However, there are a few bugs. Like two divisions in eastern Slovakia, they wanted to join the uprising. But the commanders Augustín Malár was in Bratislava at that time and Viliam Talský left Slovakia for the Soviet Union for negotiations. For that germany disarm the Slovak eastern army in 31.8

Yes, I did not mention it, but it makes even more sense that he ended up being killed by Germans, along with Golian or Viest. I believe we both can agree that this situation was mainly caused because the uprising was not fully prepared, and it started much sooner than it should have.

Thank you for your comment ❤. It's understandable that this event is not well-known. There are many similarities with the Warsaw Uprising, which is perhaps a better-known event. We can also discuss Stalin's policy, similar to the discussions around the Warsaw Uprising. For me it's a fascinating part of history also because it's my own nation.

I think I was using mainly the wiki page of the Uprising but written in the Slovak language because I understand it. I think it is more detailed than the English one but later I found out that some details were still missing and it affected the video. I mean details like Germans were advancing from the Orava region as well, so from the north toward Žilina. Wikipedia was my main source but I watched some Slovak documentaries as well. I want to make this video once again and better, so I will need sources as well. I guess that some book is needed in this case, but for me, it shouldn't be a problem.
